adult education Adult Midweek Bible Studies All are welcome to join the Men’s and Women’s Bible studies. These studies are intended to help members and friends learn more about the Bible, and no expertise is necessary. The group explores and discusses the Biblical text and its meaning for our lives, and we get to know one another in the process. THE mEN’s sTuDy Thursdays at 7:45 a.m. Session Room Men are invited to join a Bible study led by Rev. THE WOmEN’s sTuDy Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Third Floor Dining Room -or- Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. Session Room See more details below on our first study beginning Oct. 2 and 4. 14 THE RECORD september 2012 Adult Education Fall Series: “A Walk through the Old Testament” By Kurt Roeloffs, Jr. Was it Jacob or Joseph who went down to Egypt? Who led the Hebrew people across the Jordan River into the Promised Land? Who built the Temple? When was it destroyed? Was it rebuilt? Who wrote the Psalms? And who are Obadiah and Habakkuk? Do you wish you knew the Old Testament better or would you like a refresher on its over-arching narrative? Come to Adult Education in September! In years past we’ve tried to cover the whole Bible in three sessions, but this fall we’ve decided to take a slower walk and provide an introduction to just the Old Testament. If you know a lot or you know a little—come and enjoy the opportunity to learn more! To kick off this year’s Adult Education classes, pastors Lindvall, King and Hutto will teach “A Walk through the Old Testament.” The series will begin September 16th with a presentation by Rev. Doug King on the first five books, the Torah. On September 23rd Rev. Rebekah Hutto will speak on the historical books and Wisdom literature. Finally, on September 30th the series will conclude with Rev. Michael Lindvall talking about the Major and Minor Prophets. These Adult Education Classes will be held at 10 AM in the Living Room on the 3rd floor of the parish house. Handouts and take-home materials will be available. Rebekah Hutto at rhutto@brickchurch.org Women’s Bible Study On Oct. 2 and 4, the Women’s Study will resume with a series titled Biblical Myth Busters: Non Biblical Phrases we think are Biblical. We will look at six phrases that are commonly thought of as Scriptural, but in fact are not. The study meets at two different times, 7 p.m. on Tuesday evenings and 9:15 a.m. on Thursday mornings, covering the same material. Tuesday evenings meet in the Dining Room and Thursday Mornings meet in the Session Room. All women are welcome. If you are interested in joining the study, please contact Rev. mEmbERsHIp mEETINgs IN OCTObER Four times per year, The Brick Church hosts a series of membership meetings. At these informational meetings, neighbors, visitors and members of The Brick Church can learn about Christian faith and worship, the Presbyterian tradition, and the history and life of The Brick Church. Anyone who wishes to join The Brick Church must attend all three meetings in the series. Visitors are also invited to attend the series as a way to learn more about The Brick Church. Further, current members of The Brick Church are encouraged to join these sessions as a way to show visitors that we are a faith community that constantly seeks to learn and grow together. THE pREsbyTERIaN Way Tuesday, October 9, at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, October 11, at 6:45 p.m. At this meeting, we will explore our particular way of being Christian and how we relate to other Christian denominations. THE bRICk CHuRCH aT WORk aND WORsHIp Saturday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ministers, staff and church members lead this meeting. Participants will learn about one another, about the history, worship, educational programs, mission and fellowship of our congregation. RECEIvED INTO mEmbERsHIp Sunday, October 14, at 10:30 a.m. Those who have attended all three Membership Meetings and wish to join will meet with church elders before the service. During the service, they will come forward together to answer membership questions. The congregation welcomes them during the service and afterward at a special coffee hour. In the evening, there is a celebratory reception at the pastor’s manse. community life pRImETImERs HOsT auTHOR a.J. JaCObs PrimeTimers invites you to join them in the Living Room on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. for a return visit by best-selling author A.J. Jacobs to review his latest book, Drop Dead Healthy, One Man’s Humble Quest for Bodily Perfection. Having been goaded by his wife and others, Jacobs took on the challenge to become the healthiest man alive and write about it with humor and enthusiasm, while working out on a treadmill-desk. Many of you remember his highly popular, previous visit to The Brick Church following the release of his fascinating book, “The Year of Living Biblically.” Come hear him now address the physical well-being of a person’s life in the 21st century. A reception for Jacobs will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by Mr. Jacobs’s presentation from 7 to 8 p.m. A suggested contribution of $5 per person, to cover the cost of refreshments, will be gratefully accepted. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the PT Café on the Third Floor of the Parish House, we will enjoy a pre-dinner “Welcome-Back-from-Summer” hour with a delicious repast and fellowship will follow. The cost is only $20 if you make a reservation in advance, or $25 without a reservation.
