Sunday Church School resumes Sept. 16
REgIsTRaTION
All children (nursery through seventh
grade) participating in Sunday School
must enroll so that we have parent contact
information and safety information.
To register, go to www.brickchurch.
org under “Church Life,” or pick up a
form at the front desk and return it to the
church, attn: Caitlin Sparks. Contact
Caitlin Sparks at csparks@brickchurch.
org with any questions.
THE sCHEDulE
In planning the schedule, the Sunday
Church School Committee seeks to offer
consistent classroom time to all children,
while allowing families to worship
together and children to participate in
Communion.
Regular Sunday School Days
11 a.m. – Children ages 2 and 3 begin
in class and do not attend the service.
11:25 a.m. – Children age 4 through
seventh grade go to class after the Children’s
Message. They will be escorted out
of worship by a member of the Order of
St. Paul.
Family Sundays
On Family Sundays, children in first
grade and older remain in worship for the
entire service. This allows these children
8 THE RECORD september 2012
to participate in worship, provide worship
leadership and partake of the Lord’s
Supper. Because of Family Sundays,
older and younger children have different
schedules, which can be seen in separate
columns in the Sunday School schedule.
Family Sundays usually coincide with the
Communion schedule.
THE CuRRICula
From the youngest of ages, we want
our children to become familiar with
and know the stories of the Bible and
God’s love for them. As they grow and
become more familiar with the stories
of Scripture, we hope to encourage and
challenge our children and youth in their
faith, helping them to apply the teachings
of Scripture to their daily lives. In all of
this, we invite them to learn the seasons
of the church year, allowing worship to
shape their understanding of the life and
ministry of Jesus. In keeping with these
goals, we use We Believe for early childhood,
preschool children and younger elementary;
Witness for middle elementary;
an Old and New Testament survey for
older elementary; and Faithfully Asking
Questions for middle school youth. These
curricula, in combination with music
for our younger children, foster Biblical
literacy, spiritual development and faith
application.
THE TEaCHERs
Our Sunday School program depends
upon the dedication of more than 100
high school and adult volunteers who
serve as teachers, assistants and music
leaders. Lead Teachers commit to teaching
one Sunday per month. They go
through teacher training and plan lessons
using our chosen curriculum. Teachers
are provided with notes for each lesson
and a seminarian-led teacher study each
Sunday. Assistant Teachers fill in as needed
in the classrooms and help with craft
projects, snack distribution and crowd
control. We ask that all parents enrolling
their child in Sunday School commit to
assist at least one Sunday during each semester.
Music Leaders work with Amanda
Smith, the director of Children’s Music
Ministries. They visit the nursery and
2s through 5/K classes to lead the class in
song. High School Assistants are members
of our youth groups who help with
craft projects, snack distribution and
crowd control.
