HaPPY 25TH aNNIVERSaRY Val Vista
Lakes! We are twenty five years old and we
are planning a Silver anniversary Celebration
to commemorate the event. Please mark your
calendars for September 24th and 25th, 2010.
We are having a wonderful dinner on the
night of the 24th of September. It is a catered
sit down event and we want everyone to
participate. There are 200 tickets to be sold,
so please get yours early. We will have in the
West Wing plans, pictures and programs from
the birth of Val Vista Lakes to the present. a
large number of our residents have recorded
memories on film of their home under
construction or other events in their life at Val
Vista Lakes and they have graciously chosen
to share them with us. The exhibit will be a
self guided tour and should bring back a lot
of memories and reminders about the years of
our community. To top it off, we will have
entertainment, dancing and a special event to
commemorate our 25th birthday.
on Saturday September 25th, we will have
activities for the entire family from 5-9pm.
an artisan fair, music and the “Taste of Val
Vista Lakes”, along with a petting zoo, bouncy
games, face painting, and a train will provide
plenty to do. our own Val Vista Elementary
will be the recipient of proceeds raised from the
events of the anniversary Celebration. Please
come and enjoy a great time of fun and food.
Even the teenagers will find something to do.
If you have lived at Val Vista Lakes since
1985 we would like to know. The first
neighborhoods with residents were Tanglewood
Cove and Palisades I. Please contact us at the
Clubhouse. We are still recruiting volunteers
to help with the two day event. Please call us
and how to contact you so that we can put
you to work.
Congratulations to the Val Vista Lakes Swim
Team. They have had a very successful
and busy season. Their banquet was a great
event celebrating the swimmers’ hard work.
Hopefully you have stopped by the upgraded
Cardio Room. Based on the daily use,
many of you have. Thank you to the board
members and particularly Rob actis for their
efforts in getting this completed.
We have just finished the replacement of
two filters on the irrigation system, rebuilt
and upgraded the water intakes for the
irrigation system and cleaned out the wet
wells. all of these efforts were accomplished
to provide irrigation water at a much higher
quality. This will enable us to replace the
old irrigation technology and consequently
deliver water and nutrients directly to the
trees and shrubs in a much more efficient
manner. This will pay off in water savings
as well as help the trees and shrubs to be at
their peak.
In conjunction with the Silver anniversary,
in the following months, we are going to
have a monthly featured activity at the
Clubhouse. on the 2nd Wednesday of the
month be prepared to capitalize on the
talent, skills and hobbies of the residents of
Val Vista Lakes. We want your suggestions
as to the topics you want to feature. Bring
us your ideas so we can learn about all of the
hidden talent and experience that we have
among our members and share your skills
with others.
New Smoking Policy –
Passed March 18, 2010
In consideration of the health and safety
factors as well as the cleanliness of the
beach and surrounding pool areas, the
Board of Directors has passed a new
smoking policy. The new policy restricts
smoking to the designated area near
the bathrooms at the west end of the
clubhouse building, just inside and outside
the gate by the mountain.
We appreciate your help
and cooperation with
compliance with
the new policy.

Your Hoa…
Donate a Tree,
Make Your Street Happy!
Submitted by Marci Johnson
Val Vista Lakes is mounting an aggressive campaign to replant and
replace missing trees. With the freeze two years ago and the usual
loss of trees from death and disease and the natural succession of
life expectancy, there now are more needs than there are trees in
our annual budget.
YoU can help in speeding up that effort! We invite all VVL
residents to consider donating one or more trees to our landscaping
effort, in order to quickly “green-up” our neighborhoods and offer
more plentiful shade. In return, our landscape staff will devote
the extra hours to planting and pruning to keep things in tip-top
shape!
Prices are $35 for a 15-gallon tree; $125 for a 24-box tree.
Interested residents can drop their donation by the clubhouse
(noting their tree choice), and in return will receive a certificate
that tells exactly where we planted their tree!
For more details, call the administrative offices at (480) 926-9694.
New events Website
Thanks to rocket Media
We’re excited to announce a new website dedicated solely to
providing information on hosting an event at Val Vista Lakes. If
a special event is in your future, please visit our new site to view
the photo gallery, frequently asked questions, pricing and much
more. In correlation to the sites launch, we’ve created profiles on
the social networking sites of Facebook and Twitter. To become a
fan or follower on either site just search “Val Vista Lakes Events”
or log onto the new website where links are provided.
We’d like to thank VVL member, Ben Kalkman, who is the
owner and CEo of Rocket Media. Ben and his professional
staff took this project on pro bono as a way of giving back to
the community where he works and resides. Rocket Media’s
generosity in designing our new website, www.VVLEvents.
com, will help our marketing efforts expand online and reach
new clients that we were unable to before. New clients equal
new revenue which is always a welcome asset to an Hoa. If your
business is in need of a custom website or internet marketing
solutions then we highly recommend and encourage you to give
Ben and his staff a call at 480-699-2579 or visit online at www.
SUNNY’S CreaTIVe DaNCe aND SONg
My name is Rachael Griffin and I am the dance teacher at Val Vista Lakes. This
is my twenty-first year in the Creative Interpretive dance program with Sunny’s
Creative Dance and Song. I love dancing and I am thrilled to be able to teach your
girls the joy of dance!
Sunny’s Creative Dance and Song teaches young girls how to feel comfortable
with their abilities while giving them the confidence and determination it takes to
perform. With a strong basis in ballet, we teach the girls how to dance, while allowing
them the ability to create. The Creative Interpretive Program helps the dancers
become more aware of their bodies while teaching them to use that awareness in a
graceful manner.
Dance classes last one hour, and are formed to encourage your dancer’s growth and
progression. Each dance class has its own performance in December, and every
dancer performs in 11-13 numbers. Classes are divided by age, and grade in school;
however, if there is a time problem, we should be able to work things out. For questions,
please contact Rachael at 602-339-2422 or rachael.griffin@gmail.com.
Women’s Club News
Submitted by VVL Women’s Club
The Women’s Club is so excited about our
upcoming annual membership brunch!
This will be a catered event just for us… the
women of Val Vista Lakes. our theme this
year is “Baubles & Bags” with accessory tips
from Charming CHaRLIE, located at San
Tan Village. Expect to be bedazzled with
color in tasteful yet affordable style.
our goal of the Women’s Club is to cultivate
friendships, support our community and share
our experiences as women in all walks of life.
We are a great mix of “chicks” who enjoy
meeting monthly at the Clubhouse, joining
smaller groups with common interests, and
couple’s activities. a big draw is the holiday
progressive dinner in December. We venture
out by boat starting at the Clubhouse. It is a
very festive occasion with a personal touch
celebrating the season at individual’s homes.
Val Vista Lakes is a wonderful community
with outstanding facilities and we plan to utilize
these even more this year…(hint: Think
“Smores ‘n More” at the big fire pit on the
lake! or “Bee Bop at the Sock Hop”?) Still
in planning stages but we’d love input as this
is YoUR club!
Help make this year the best it can be. We
have some enthusiastic gals brimming with
ideas but more importantly eager to know
YoU and your special talents. Come on,
now! We aLL have gifts even if only the gift
of gab! (My identity remains a mystery for
this very reason!)
VVL FUN-raisers
Community support of VVL Elementary fundraisers provides
the financial support necessary so the PTSo can invest in
classroom technology and other enrichment activities. Look
for future announcements about the Spirit Nights at local
restaurants where students can socialize off-campus with a
portion of the sales going directly to VVL Elementary.
There are three primary fundraising events planned for the
school year. In august VVL Elementary students will participate
in a Read-a-Thon. In october students will sell otis
Spunkmeyer cookie dough. Product will be delivered the first
week in December for your holiday baking needs! and look
for upcoming information about the Spring Carnival FUNraiser.
Companies have also developed community programs that
help VVL raise money without any additional effort on your
part. You can make your grocery shopping dollars count
through participation in Fry’s Cool Cash and Basha’s Thanks a
Million! programs. These free money for schools programs are
an easy way to support VVL and will kick-off on September 1.
• Basha’s Thanks a Million Program, ask the cashier to code
your Thank You card with VVL’s number 27043, each time
you use your card money will be donated to VVL.
• Fry’s Cool Cash program works the same way, ask the cashier
to scan this barcode to your VIP Card.
Students are encouraged to bring in Box Tops, Campbell’s
labels, and Tyson a+ labels and the school can also earn money
recycling your ink cartridges, juice pouches, and cookie wrappers!
get Involved
at VVL elementary
It is the start of a new school year and there are many ways
to become involved at VVL Elementary. Community support
contributes to the special educational experience VVL
Elementary continues to provide to our children.
The PTSo has a number of different committees in need of
volunteers. opportunities include:
• Art Masterpiece
• Book Fair
• Conference Potluck
• Fundraising Volunteers
• Fun Runs
• Library Helpers
• Lunch Recess Helpers
• Cafeteria Supervision
• Picture Day Helpers
• Red Ribbon Week
• School Directory
• Spring Carnival
• Teacher Appreciation
• Traffic Helpers
• Welcome Committee
• Yearbook
• 6th Grade Committee
For a description of each committee please review the “PTSo
Committee Descriptions” document on the school website at
https://secure.gilbert.k12.az.us/schoolpgs/valvista/valvistainfo.php.
Volunteer opportunities that require 1-2 hours will be
highlighted for those that would like to get involved but have
limited time available. Two hours of your time can help the
school!
If you do not have a special interest in one particular area
there is also a need for General Volunteers that will be called
on as needs are identified. Please contact the VVL PTSo at
vvlptso@gmail.com for more information or to sign-up for a
committee. It is an excellent way to support the school!
Do not hesitate to offer your assistance to your students’ teachers
Compliance Department…
Kathy’s Khronicles
By Kathy Mitchell, Compliance Coordinator
Landscape 101
With the weather cooling down, it’s time to reassess front yard
landscaping and lake view back yards. There are specific requirements
regarding landscaping, they are as follows:
• 60% of the yard area is to be lawn and/or pre-approved ground
cover.
• Natural rock or gravel can be used to accent live areas. Artificially
colored rock is prohibited.
• Cactus or other strictly desert plantings will not be approved.
• Desert type plants may be installed in enclosed yards (not lake
view yards) provided they do not protrude above walls.
• All landscaped areas shall be watered by an automatic irrigation
system.
Tree Planting and Trimming
Late summer into September is the perfect time to plant palm
trees. There’s a wide variety of palms that are commonly grown
in and around the valley and most are native to tropical and subtropical
regions of the world. Since our late summer weather
is similar to that of palm trees native climates, they flourish and
grow the most during these months.
For optimum growth and health, give them a dose of 8-0-8 palm
supplement. also, regular applications of an all purpose tree fertilizer
will keep the trees healthy.
Seasonal Color
To ensure winter flowers, plant while the days are still warm
enough to encourage growth, before the winter months or frost.
Weeds
Pre-emergent
herbicides (i.e. Gallary,
Pendulum, and
Surflan) are applied
before the weed begins
to grow. It prevents
the seeds from
germinating into a
new plant. Weeds
can grow throughout
the entire year.
The herbicides may
be applied almost any time of the year. almost all pre-emergent
herbicides will require rain or some form of irrigation to activate
them.
Post-emergent herbicides (i.e., Roundup, Reward) are applied
after the weeds are up and growing. These products are sprayed
directly on the healthy weeds. Glyphospate based weed killers
may take as long as a week to 10 days before you see any kind of
visual results. Be patient, it is working. It is best that this is applied
during dry weather.
Landscaping provides one of the most important architectural
features of Val Vista Lakes. Let’s all do our part and keep Val Vista
Lakes the most unique community in the Valley.
