2010 Annual Report
Inspire, Inform, Engage...
Our 2010 Annual Report is all about what it takes to remain a strong presence in the educational community, to
care for this unique, biodiverse sanctuary, and to maintain our role as a resource for scientific research. What it takes is you,
our loyal members and donors, our volunteers and a dedicated, hard-working board and staff.
Environmental Education (EE) is our core and no one does it better. EE is still the heart of what we do here – serving nearly
8,000 school children during the school year, over 200 summer campers, and many others through creative family programming
and enrichment programs for adults.
We’ve taken our expertise “on the road,” because EE can be taught anywhere, and our outreach programs allow us to enhance
science curriculum in local schools with our innovative environmental education programs. Currently, we serve Eastbrook
Academy in Milwaukee, Northern Ozaukee School District and Thorson Elementary in Cedarburg with specially designed
Environmental Education Curriculum Frameworks, which provide more extended and long-term contact with the students we
serve. The students’ immersion in school-site activities, closely followed by the hands-on learning at Riveredge, creates a learning
experience that is meaningful and long lasting.
Our sanctuary is unique in the area for its biodiversity and control of invasives. It is a jewel in the landscape of Ozaukee County
and adds to the quality of life of area residents even if they never visit us. It adds to the vitality of the community by providing ongoing
recreational opportunities for adults, families and children. We’ve added additional acreage this year with the acquisition of a
tract of private land located in the center of the Riveredge property, expanding our sanctuary to 379 acres.
The sanctuary serves as a resource for scientific research and provides opportunities for citizen scientists to expand their horizens.
Projects such as the successful rearing of and releasing of lake sturgeon into the Milwaukee River, an effort to return a breeding
population of sturgeon to the River in the next 20-25 years; providing a site for a successful pilot Swamp Metalmark Recovery
Project in partnership with Milwaukee Public Museum; or evaluating a number of Emerald Ash Borer management strategies and
research projects with partners that include WDNR, APHIS, USDA, DATCP and Researchers from UW-Madison. These are just a
few of the important projects that Riveredge is involved with all year long.
There is always something exciting to be involved with at Riveredge: citizen-science projects; volunteer groups, such as the Habitat
Healers or Teacher Naturalists, and many other volunteer opportunities; programs all through the year; monthly Riveredge Speaks
Out lecture series; photo club; butterfly, dragonfly, frog and toad counts; events such as the River Valley Ride or Sturgeon Fest;
Maple Sugarin’ activities and so much more.
And, we do all of this on a budget of around $800,000. We do it with your participation in our annual fundraising campaign, through
grants and program and membership fees. Memberships and generous gifts make the difference in what we continue to be able to
accomplish. Together we can inspire, inform and enable responsible environmental decision-making for people of all ages. So much
is dependent on our success.
Thank you, again, for your continued support. We are proud and honored to serve the Riveredge family and its mission. Please
don’t hesitate to call if you have questions, concerns or simply want to talk about Riveredge.
Sincerely,
John Turner, President Patrick Boyle, Executive Director
Our Core:
Environmental Education
School Programs
Our school program vision and strategy continues toward developing close relationships
with students and teachers in the local community as providers of quality environmental
education. During the 2009-2010 school year 7,828 students from 92 schools participated
in our hands-on, inquiry-based school programs. Beginning in fall 2010, we will offer five
new school programs for preschool and kindergarten students.
Nature Journeys Summer Camp
Over 200 kids enrolled in Nature Journeys summer science camps in 2009. Starting with
preschool, Nature Journeys engages campers in unique outdoor explorations designed
specifically for each age group. Camps are designed to connect people (youth, teens,
families) with the natural world in a deep and meaningful way by building on skills and
awareness from one camp to the next. All of the Nature Journeys curricula are based on
sound education and philosophy. Campers participate in hands-on explorations as they ask
questions about the mysteries of the natural world, uncover evidence at their fingertips
and draw conclusions based on personal experiences.
Education Partnerships
Riveredge staff works with area schools to design Environmental Education
Curriculum Frameworks in order to provide more extended and long-term contact
with the students we serve. Using grade-appropriate curriculum standards, these
frameworks build a progressive series of environmental education activities and field
trips for each grade level. Currently, we serve Eastbrook Academy in Milwaukee,
Northern Ozaukee School District and Thorson Elementary in Cedarburg with this
framework. Riveredge educators develop strong, positive relationships with the
students and staff of these schools. The students’ immersion in school-site activities,
closely followed by the hands-on learning at Riveredge, creates a learning experience
that is meaningful and long lasting.

Environmental Education
River Connection
During the 2009-2010 school year, 585 urban students from 25 classes participated in River
Connection. The program, in partnership with the Urban Ecology Center (UEC) in Milwaukee, uses
the rural Milwaukee River location of Riveredge and the urban Milwaukee River location of Hubbard
Park in Shorewood to teach students the concept of a watershed, animal adaptations, biodiversity and
the role of pollution in the health of a natural freshwater system. An anonymous donor has supported
this program for the past three years, making it possible to pay transportation and staff costs.
Riveredge, Lac Lawrann Conservancy (LLC) and the
West Bend Joint School District
Beginning in fall 2009, we partnered with LLC to deliver Riveredge’s Wisconsin’s Glacial Landscape
school program to all 473 sixth grade students in the West Bend School District. This partnership
was made possible through grants from the West Bend Community Foundation and West Bend
Mutual Insurance Charitable Fund. Our goal is to enable each student in the WB School District to
participate in an environmental education program at LLC or Riveredge once each year.
Art in Nature
Riveredge Art in Nature programs expanded in 2009-2010 thanks to a grant from the
Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary Nohl Fund. In May, we collaborated with
the Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend for the second year to deliver four days
of art programs to 262 fourth graders from Milwaukee, Shorewood and West Bend.
The students came to the museum to learn about Wisconsin artists, followed by an
afternoon at Riveredge working with artists to create drawings and sculptures of the
land.
This spring, in cooperation with Artists Working in Education (AWE), 35 students from
the MPS elementary school Oliver Wendell Holmes visited Riveredge and worked
with our naturalists and Kitty Dyble Thompson, a mural artist, to explore the pond and
forest communities. For six weeks in their art classroom, these K-8th grade students
expanded upon their drawings and painted three mural panels. The completed mural
was installed in our Children’s Nature Library in June. A small grant from the Greater
Milwaukee Foundation, in addition to Mary Nohl Funds, supported this project.

80 species and 18,412 individuals were recorded on the 2009 Christmas Bird Count, one species
short of tying our all time record of 81 seen in 1996 and 1999. Also a sighting of a black-legged
kittiwake – very rare to the area, was documented.
35 species and 381 individuals were recorded on the Butterfly Count. Fewer butterflies were
seen for the third year in a row despite holding the count after July 4th . One new species, the
Edward’s Hairstreak, was documented.
We continue to participate in annual dragonfly, frog and toad surveys to monitor the area
for impacts to the area’s ecological biodiversity.
In partnership with the WDNR and UW-Extension, the 2010 training session for the
Wisconsin Ephemeral Pond Partnership was conducted at Riveredge on Saturday, April 10.
Riveredge Master Naturalist Series
The first Master Naturalist class graduated 31 students in March 2010. Students included
staff members from Riveredge, Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, Mequon Nature Preserve,
Alverno College and Riverbend Nature Center as well as individuals from throughout the
area. The goal of this program is to recruit, train and provide educational enrichment for
regional naturalists.
Return the Sturgeon
Lake Sturgeon gametes were collected from the Wolf River on 4/16/10 and began hatching in the Riveredge
Streamside Rearing Facility (SRF) on the morning of 4/26/10. To maximize the opportunity for sturgeon to
imprint on the Milwaukee River, Riveredge manages the SRF from April until October. This 10’ by 20’ trailer
pumps water from the River into rearing tanks, enabling sturgeon to be raised on the Milwaukee River water
from day one. Daily operation of the SRF is performed by a team of 28 Riveredge sturgeon volunteers.
On October 3, 2009, Riveredge, in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, US Fish
and Wildlife Service and UW Stevens Point successfully completed the fourth year of a 25-year effort to
re-establish a breeding population of Lake Sturgeon in the Milwaukee River. This was the first year in which
the project goal of releasing 1,500 fingerlings was achieved. The project highlights Riveredge’s position on
the river, and brings attention to the watershed.
Emerald Ash Borer
Did you know that approximately 30% of the Riveredge forest is ash? We are making the best out of this
very sad situation and will continue to offer the community educational programs regarding how to manage
or mitigate the potential damage from this invasive insect. A number of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)
management strategies and research projects are currently being evaluated with partners that include
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and
Consumer Protection and Researchers from UW-Madison.
In February, a small-scale logging operation removed “sink trees,” which is part of the effort to slow
the spread of EAB. Potential uses and markets for Riveredge’s ash wood are being evaluated to
maximize the environmental, economic and educational value of this resource.
Swamp Metalmark
The Swamp Metalmark Butterfly, on the brink of extinction in Wisconsin, is currently being
evaluated for federal listing. The Wisconsin Swamp Metalmark Butterfly Recovery Initiative,
hosted by Riveredge, which is the site of a successful pilot Swamp Metalmark recovery project, in
partnership with Milwaukee Public Museum, will address the research need identified in Wisconsin’s
Priority Conservation Actions List to “evaluate the status of Swamp Metalmark and assess potential
reintroduction sites.” This project is funded by a two-year grant from the James E. Dutton Foundation.
and Adult Education

Highlights of 2010
Woodland Harvest
The Woodland Harvest Project, a permaculture and local foods collaboration between Riveredge and neighboring
Wellspring Farm and CSA, provides a regional model for sensible and sustainable land use on any scale. Since
2008, on about 10 acres of former Wallner Farm land, an array of perennial plants have been woven
into the landscape in a way that mimics the structure, energy flow and nutrient cycling of our regional
woodlands. Instead of a washed-out corn and soybean field, a system of swales gently carries water to
thousands of plants which occur naturally in the woodland ecosystem at Riveredge. Select cultivars
of chestnut, hazelnut, pine nut and walnut seedlings form the backbone of the design, while currants,
raspberries, grapes, asparagus and rhubarb fill in niches between these trees. An orchard of plums, pears,
cherries and apples overlooks the site.
Children’s Natural Playground
Construction of the Riveredge Natural Playground is ongoing and will be completed in the fall of 2011,
thanks to foundation and individual funding support, as well as hundreds of volunteer hours. The
playground is a rich learning environment for children of all ages. The Riveredge landscape and vegetation are
the play setting and nature provides the play materials. It will have some “peoplebuilt”
elements, but ultimately is designed for children to embed themselves in
nature in a positive, hands-on way.
Property Acquisition
In May 2010, the Riveredge sanctuary grew to 379 acres with the purchase of 8.92
acres of privately-owned land located in the center of the sanctuary. The property
contains a large number of sugar maples, which for many years, Ernie, the previous
owner (affectionately known as “Father Fire” due to his years of volunteering
with our Maple Sugarin’ events and school programs), allowed Riveredge to tap.
This land also includes examples of mesic and wet forest and many different tree
species, including red oak, bur oak, basswood, hickory, beech, birch, poplar and of
course, the sugar maple.
Riveredge deconstructed the house, garage and outbuildings and recycled all
materials as much as possible. The deconstruction process carefully dismantles
a building, using hand tools to take it apart board by board, beam by beam. All
usable materials were sorted and distributed for donation and reuse, saving tons of
building materials from going into a landfill.

Experience is What
Riveredge is All About
Whether you are a child participating in science-based school programs or
an adult taking in a workshop or our master naturalist program, experiencing
and connecting to nature can be life-changing or just a pleasant day in the
outdoors. Each child – each person – who comes to Riveredge leaves much
richer in knowledge and experience, which they will ultimately use to shape
their lives and, in turn, our world.
But as a not-for-profit
organization, we can’t offer these
experiences or maintain this place
without your help!
Make a tax-deductible gift now
and know that you are supporting
a place that will be here for your
children and grandchildren to
enjoy far into the future.
Thank you
Events and Fundraisers
Thanks, in part, to a generous sponsorship by The Forest County Potawatomi
Community Foundation, the Pancake Breakfast raised $3,550 for Environmental
Education programs at Riveredge.
The 18 th annual River Valley Ride, June 27, 2010, was wet and stormy, but 900 riders were
not deterred. They enjoyed the day (between the downpours), rode, ate, enjoyed the music
and helped us raise $25,810 to support Riveredge Environmental Education programs.
Return the Sturgeon event continues to attract a growing audience. On October 3, 2009,
families came to Thiensville Park to enjoy a day of activities and to help release over
1,000 sturgeon fingerlings into the Milwaukee River. $10,825 was raised to support
