2003 ABOUT TITLE ALFRED UNIVERSITY<br />

Founded by pioneer Seventh Day Baptists in 1836, <strong>Alfred</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> is the oldest coeducational institution in New York<br />

state and among the oldest in the nation. Approximately 2,000<br />

undergraduate and 350 graduate students are enrolled at AU.<br />

The 58-building, 232-acre hillside campus adjoins the village<br />

of <strong>Alfred</strong>, located between the foothills of the Allegheny<br />

Mountains and the Finger Lakes region.<br />

Dr. Charles M. Edmondson<br />

is the 13th president of<br />

<strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Prior to his appointment at<br />

<strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Edmondson spent 30 years at<br />

Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, where he held<br />

various faculty and administrative positions, including<br />

provost and vice president of academic affairs<br />

from 1993-2000.<br />

He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in<br />

history from the <strong>University</strong> of Mississippi and a<br />

Ph.D. in history from Florida State <strong>University</strong>. He<br />

and his wife, Dr. Laura Greyson, live in <strong>Alfred</strong>.<br />

James Moretti<br />

Director of<br />

<strong>Athletics</strong><br />

James Moretti is in his 15th<br />

year as athletic director at<br />

AU. Before taking on the<br />

duties of athletic director,<br />

Moretti enjoyed a successful<br />

13-year career as head coach of the Saxon football team,<br />

going 70-57-3. He is second behind Alex Yunevich in<br />

coaching wins at AU.<br />

Moretti earned his bachelor’s degree in business<br />

administration from AU in 1972 and a master’s<br />

degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland in<br />

1975. He is married to the former Susan Nagell (’73).<br />

They live in <strong>Alfred</strong> and have three children.<br />

U.S. News & World Report, AU is ranked 18th among master’s<br />

level universities in the North. Every year since U.S.<br />

News began ranking colleges and universities, AU has been<br />

among the top institutions in the Northeast. U.S. News ranked<br />

AU second on its annual "Best Values" list for regional universities<br />

MEET THE COACHES<br />

SCOTT MILLER<br />

HEAD COACH<br />

Scott Miller was appointed head men's soccer coach at <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>University</strong> in<br />

2004. In his first year at the Saxons’ helm, he guided AU to an impressive 10-6-<br />

2 mark and berths in the Empire 8 Conference championships and ECAC<br />

Upstate tournament. He led AU to a spot in the Empire 8 championships in 2006<br />

and has a career record of 38-71-11 in seven seasons at AU.<br />

Miller is a1996 graduate of <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>University</strong>, with a bachelor's degree in<br />

business administration. He was a four-year starting midfielder on the AU soccer<br />

team from 1992-95, earning NCAA Division III Regional All-American honors in 1993 and 1995 and<br />

Empire Athletic Association all-conference honors from 1993-95. He ranks second all-time at AU in<br />

career assists and third in career points.<br />

After graduating from AU, Miller played professionally for three years. He played for the<br />

Rochester Rhinos of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) in 1997 and with the USL's Division 3<br />

Vermont Voltage and Arizona Sahuaros in 1998 and 1999, respectively. A native of Rochester, NY,<br />

Miller has held numerous coaching positions at the club and collegiate levels. He served one season<br />

(1996) as assistant men's soccer coach at Norwich (VT) <strong>University</strong> and was preseason assistant coach<br />

of the men's and women's soccer teams at SUNY Plattsburgh in 1998. He trained players for the<br />

Paradise Valley Soccer Club in Phoenix, AZ, from 1998-99 and from 2000-01 was a coach and trainer<br />

for National Capital Soccer League (NCSL) boys teams in the DC Stoddert Soccer League (DCSSL),<br />

a prestigious youth soccer organization in Washington, D.C. In 2002, Miller served as an assistant<br />

coach in the Olympic Development Program of the Virginia Youth Soccer Association. He spent three<br />

seasons (2001-03) as an assistant coach of men's soccer at Division I George Mason <strong>University</strong> in<br />

Fairfax, VA.<br />

Miller came to AU after serving from 2003-04 as youth director for Curt Onalfo Soccer, a training<br />

and instructional school for youth soccer players in northern Virginia and Washington D.C. He<br />

also holds a United States Soccer Federation “A” License.<br />

DAVID GARCIA<br />

GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH<br />

David Garcia is in his first season as a graduate assistant with the men’s soccer<br />

team. Garcia is a 2011 graduate of Utica College, where he earned a bachelor’s<br />

degree in business management with a concentration in marketing. While studying<br />

at Utica, he played four seasons on the men’s soccer team, helping the Pioneers<br />

reach their first Empire 8 Conference Tournament in 2007 and two more conference tournament<br />

appearances during his time there. An All-Conference player, also helped achieve a school record for<br />

most wins in a season his senior year. His coaching experience includes several youth clubs in the<br />

Rochester, NY, area, where he grew up, including Rochester Futbol Club BU-16 (2008-2011),<br />

Rochester Futbol Club BU12 (2011-) and Brockport Soccer Club GU-15 (2011-), also includes work<br />

for Doug Miller Soccer Camps. He is currently seeking his Master’s in Business Administration from<br />

AU.<br />

2010: Played in and started 16 games. Started 14 games as keeper,<br />

made 65 saves and gave up 30 goals. Posted a 4-8-3 record<br />

and recorded two shutouts. 2009: Played in 15 games and started<br />

in 14...had 1.63 goals against average and .747 save percentage<br />

(71). 2008: Saw action in 18 games in net as a freshman, turning in a 2.48 goals<br />

against average and .747 save percentage. Before AU: Played soccer at Thunder<br />

Ridge High School in Highlands Ranch, CO. Personal: Elliot, the son of Todd and<br />

Deborah Thorpe, is an art and design major.<br />

assists...Was named a conference, county, district, state and regional<br />

2003 2011 SEASON TITLE PREVIEW<br />

The 2011 <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>University</strong> men’s soccer<br />

team will have no shortage of<br />

experienced players as the Saxons seek<br />

to improve on a 2010 season in which<br />

they went 5-9-3 (0-7-0 in Empire 8<br />

play).<br />

Eight of 11 starters return and a host<br />

of solid bench players from a season<br />

ago and some talented newcomers will<br />

try to help head coach Scott Miller<br />

earn a spot in the Empire 8 Conference<br />

championship tournament for the third<br />

time in eight-year tenure at AU.<br />

Junior forward Frankie Manning, a<br />

two-time Empire 8 all-star, and sophomore<br />

forward-midfielder Jeffrey Thomas<br />

each scored three goals in 2010, tops<br />

among returnees. With seven points on<br />

three goals and an assist, Thomas was<br />

second on the team in points as a<br />

freshman.<br />

Also expected to add scoring punch<br />

for the Saxons are junior forward Rigel<br />

Johnson, and a trio of returning midfielders<br />

in juniors Tony Gai (one goal,<br />

one assist in 2010) and Sam Miller<br />

(one assist), and sophomore Zach<br />

Kranefeld (two goals, one assist), who<br />

may also see time on defense as well.<br />

Freshman Brendan Collins will<br />

compete for playing time, as will a<br />

quintet of freshman midfielder-forwards:<br />

Nicholas Milliman, Eric Deemer,<br />

Pedro Wynkoop, Yvon Mercier and Ian<br />

Healy.<br />

Other Saxons looking for time at<br />

midfield will be senior Eric Lavelle, a<br />

former forward who had two assists as<br />

a junior in 2010, and Uriah Kashman,<br />

who made pair of starts last season.<br />

Freshman Colby Cotton will compete<br />

for time at midfield and defense, and<br />

Lavelle may see time on defense as<br />

well.<br />

Defense is a position of depth for<br />

the Saxons, and will be anchored by<br />

returning starter Cory Hill (one goal in<br />

2010). Seniors Mike Chrzbaszcz and<br />

Senior Elliot Thorpe enters his<br />

fourth season as the starting goalie. He<br />

started 16 games in 2010 and had a<br />

1.96 goals against average and a .684<br />

save percentage with three shutouts. A<br />

pair of sophomores - Samuel Guy and<br />

Jacob Bird- will back up Thorpe.<br />

AU will look to improve an offense<br />

that tallied only 19 goals last year and<br />

a defense that allowed 40. The Saxons<br />

will need to reverse a 235-204 shots<br />

disadvantage as they try to reverse three<br />

one-goal losses (1-0 to Elmira and<br />

Ithaca and 2-1 to St. John Fisher) in<br />

conference play a season ago.
