The Second Century Campaign is a forward-thinking,
thorough and ambitious five-year initiative to diversify
and stabilize our sources of revenue.
The campaign will raise $10 million from new and loyal donors
to protect and strengthen our core program, and also create a
$10 million endowment—from outright and planned gifts—to
further secure our mission for another century.
Individuals and families have always been Childhaven’s
dedicated partners. In the years ahead, this generous community
spirit will make the difference in our ability to reduce and
prevent suffering for society’s most vulnerable children.
“Childhaven is a cost effective program that changes lives. Childhaven changes how
children see their potential and how they see their role in the community which,
ultimately, will make the community a better place for all of us.”
Dear friends,
An abused child lives with insecurity, confusion and fear.
A Childhaven child lives with consistency, understanding and love.
The difference we make for abused and neglected children and their
families changes lives forever. It changes the lives of the hundreds of
babies, toddlers and presch oolers who receive our therapeutic care each
year. It changes the lives of their families, who learn how to parent with
steadiness, patience and joy. And it changes the lives of generations of
children and families who follow them, the cycle of abuse and neglect
forever broken thanks to Childhaven.
For more than a century, this profound life-changing difference has endured because Childhaven
embraces innovations that enable us to better address the unique developmental and early
learning needs of vulnerable children. It endures because we steward today’s resources while
taking strategic steps to secure our future. It endures because we believe that children can heal,
that child abuse can be prevented and that no other organization in our community can serve
this mission better than Childhaven.
It endures because of you.
You share our beliefs. You make the healing,
hugs and hope possible. You ensure the future
of Childhaven—and the future of our
children—today, tomorrow, always.
On behalf of Childhaven and our children
and families, thank you.
Sincerely,
Maria Chavez Wilcox
President
Our mission is to forever end the cycle of child abuse and neglect by healing its
youngest victims with scientifically proven therapeutic care, preparing them to be
successful learners, supporting their families and laying the foundation
for lifelong loving relationships.
Our vision is a community where child abuse and neglect no longer exist.
A GOOD START
Matthew and his mother wait for the Childhaven van, driven
by one of our teachers who can observe family and peer
interactions even before Matthew
enters our doors.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
A FULL DAY’S NUTRITION
A day in the life of a
Childhaven child
Play time helps Matthew
learn to interact in
positive ways with
other children.
Snacks and two hot meals provide
a full day’s nutritional value.
Low 1-to-5 teacher-child ratios mean Matthew can
get individual attention and therapy to heal. In the
classroom, he also participates in early learning
activities that will help prepare him for success in
kindergarten.
At nap time, a teacher
helps Matthew feel safe
and comforted.
END OF A HAPPY DAY
The Childhaven van drops off Matthew at home. That
evening, a Childhaven home visitor visits the family to assess
Matthew’s safety, help his mom improve her parenting skills and
connects the family with other needed services in the community.
Caring for children, caring for
our community
Since 1909, Childhaven has been an integral
partner in the health and well being of our
community. But we didn’t become a local
leader, statewide advocate and national model
in the treatment and prevention of child abuse
and neglect by relying on our 103-year legacy.
We use the most innovative and scientifically
proven methods of healing children and
strengthening families today while planning
and strategizing for tomorrow.
Our programs include:
Therapeutic child care: Child welfare authorities refer almost 400 children to
us each year, and we provide them with developmentally-focused care and therapy
in an enriched learning environment. Our program emphasizes healing as well as
kindergarten readiness.
Drug-affected infant program: Children affected by their parents’ substance abuse
receive care and treatment while their parents are enrolled in an outpatient chemical
dependency treatment program.
Parent training and education: We work with parents and guardians individually and in
groups to give them the strategies, support and confidence they need to nurture their children
and build stronger families.
Childhaven employs only the most committed, professional, licensed staff. And we provide a full scope of
“wraparound” services, such as health screenings, nutritious meals, transportation, monthly home visits and
daily home monitoring. Branches are located throughout King County at the Broadway (Central Seattle),
Eli Creekmore (Burien area) and Patrick L. Gogerty (Auburn).
“I’m impressed with the consistency of what Childhaven does, the results, the care that
Childhaven takes in serving such a great need. Childhaven is unique—no one else in our
community does what it does. Efficient and effective, the organization wouldn’t be here
after 100+ years if it weren’t doing it right.”
Debbie Killinger, Childhaven supporter
Youth Board member Rachel Berner-Hays
Developing the next generation of
community leaders
It takes a collective effort to change lives, and the Childhaven Youth Board has quickly become a key
player on our team.
The Youth Board gives teenagers the opportunity to create meaningful change in their
communities by financially supporting the mission of Childhaven—all while gaining leadership experience
and impacting their communities.
These committed young people come together one Sunday each month to learn about philanthropy and then
put their knowledge to use to raise funds for projects at Childhaven branches. Projects have included
purchasing car seats, updating play areas and funding teacher trainings.
“I’ve been lucky enough to grow up surrounded by people who care about me,” says 2010-2012 Youth
Board member Rachel Berner-Hays. “For me, Childhaven is all about the stories—the kids who don’t
have it as good as I did. It gets to me, and I have to do something. I’ve always had a passion for service.”
A junior at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Rachel adds, “Childhaven knows what it’s doing, and
they’re good at it. When you give to the organization, you can see the good you’re doing right away.
That’s why I stay involved.”
Childhaven benefits today and in the long-term from the dedicated members of the Youth Board.
They raise funds for immediate needs while developing a lifelong passion for service that will support
Childhaven and our community for decades.
CHILDHAVEN Successes and Opportunities 6

A year
establishes a foundation for the future
of changes
Over the past year, exciting changes paved the way for ensuring
Childhaven’s long-term viability and for expanding our child
abuse prevention mission into the community.
In May 2011, Maria Chavez Wilcox became President of Childhaven, bringing with her a deep personal
passion for the cause, a nationally-recognized reputation in nonprofit leadership and a determination to
build even deeper community support for our mission.
In July 2011, the Washington State Department of Early Learning (DEL)—the first Cabinet-level
state government department in the nation focused solely on young children—assumed oversight of
Childhaven. Although Childhaven is not a state agency, we are licensed and monitored by the
state because we receive state funds to partially cover the costs of therapeutic child care. Under the
umbrella of this caring advocate, Childhaven finds greater protection of its state funding, more resources
to support the early learning elements of our program and a committed champion of our mission.
Childhaven also kicked off our Second Century Campaign. The Campaign is an ambitious initiative
to galvanize individuals, families and our generous community to raise $20 million over the next five
years—$10 million to protect and strengthen our core program and another $10 million to create an
endowment to further secure our mission for the next 100 years. Every dollar donated to Childhaven
through 2016 will go toward the Second Century Campaign. More information on the Second Century
Campaign can be found on the inside flap of this report.
CHILDHAVEN Successes and Opportunities 7

In November 2011, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded a $300,000 grant to Childhaven to
help us provide parenting training to more families. The three-year grant supports the expansion of free
parenting education to more Childhaven families (year two) along with fee-based training to any King
County family who wants to improve their parenting skills (year three). The Positive Parenting Program
(Triple P) is an international award-winning program backed by more than 25 years of clinically proven,
worldwide research. Requiring in-depth training now under way for Childhaven staff (year one), Triple P
is a flexible system of parenting solutions to manage behaviors today and prevent future problems before
they arise.
In February 2012, Harvard University chose Childhaven as one of the first two organizations in the
nation chosen to participate in its Frontiers of Innovation program, researching new ways of intervening
in the early learning processes of vulnerable young children.
The science of early childhood development shows that investing in quality early learning, social and
health programs yields healthy and capable children, strengthens families and supports economic
stability. The goal of Frontiers of Innovation in Washington is to use the research findings across the
state’s systems of early care and education, health, and child welfare and economic support to improve
the lives of young children.
Childhaven’s new association with Frontiers of Innovation will allow us to build up our body of proven
interventional techniques to break the cycle of abuse and neglect, expand our reach to more troubled
children and families, forge even stronger community relationships and continually improve our efforts
to heal the hurt and trauma that our children experience.
In the last year, 379 volunteers donated nearly 10,000 hours to help Childhaven remain a safe and
caring place for children. This critical use of trained, dedicated volunteers provides many more caring
hands in classrooms, at meal time, for birthdays and holidays and during project time.
“We make a wise investment in the future of our world when we care for children who’ve
been abused or neglected. Childhaven helps them develop into valuable members of our
society rather than becoming a burden on society in later years.”
Justina and her family
Perfecting the recipe for a happy,
healthy family
Justina Houston loves her three children—“they’re my heart,” she says. But there was a time when all that
love just wasn’t enough.
Shortly after her daughter, Serenity, was born in 2003, a boyfriend introduced Justina to the powerfully
addictive world of meth. Abused herself as a child, Justina became involved in a drug-fueled abusive adult
relationship. Even after son Josiah was born, followed 10 months later by his brother, Joel, the lure of
meth was still too powerful to resist.
“My kids were always clean and fed, but I wasn’t there for them emotionally,” Justina says.
When Child Protective Services stepped in and she faced the prospect of losing her children forever,
Justina vowed to change. She left her violent relationship, entered rehab and, after a few stumbles,
recently celebrated one year clean and sober.
While Justina pulled her life together, Josiah and Joel lived with their grandparents and went
to Childhaven. Here, they found a calm daily routine and the therapy to deal with their anger,
fear and confusion.
Their mother found the knowledge and skills to become the focused and wholly present
parent her kids needed. By working with Childhaven’s teachers and participating in Parent Child
Interactive Training, Justina learned how to listen and praise, to set limits and rules, and to discipline
positively and consistently. Added to the ingredient that had been there all along—love—the family is
beginning to thrive.
“Kids need to know they’re safe and that the parent is in control. Without limits, it can be scary and
overwhelming to a child,” explains the family’s Childhaven case manager, Mary Dunbar. “Justina now
knows how to manage her children’s behaviors and has become a more confident mother. After being
separated, they’re rebuilding their relationship.”
“Childhaven intervenes with children and families in incredibly intelligent and thoughtful
ways to have the greatest and most lasting impact—and you have longitudinal studies
and data that prove that your programs work. When I donate, I want to put my money
where I know I can get the most benefit for it. And when I donate to Childhaven, I know it
has an impact. It is an investment that grows at an exponential rate.”
Your support changes lives—
