Welcome to a new era of
Pirates Football
When the 2008 college football season kicks off in
August, a new era will begin for the Hampton
University Pirates.
For the first time in 17 years, Joe Taylor will no
longer be on the sidelines calling the plays for the
Pirates, and for the first time in four years, the Pirates
won’t enter the season with the moniker of “
defending champions.”
Following a 6-5 season that saw the Pirates finish
fourth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with a
mark of 5-3, Taylor headed south to Florida A&M
and defensive coordinator Jerry Holmes received the
ultimate Christmas present – the title of head coach
of the Pirates.
“The first thing that popped in my head when I got
the call about being named head coach was how
much of an honor it was that the university saw the
potential in me to be the new head coach,” said 50
year-old Holmes. “It’s a great feeling that everyone
wanted me for the job.”
Holmes, who served seven years on Taylor’s staff,
including the last four as defensive coordinator, will
inherit a team returning 47 letterwinners and 15
starters, including eight regulars on offense and
seven on defense. He says that bevy of talent should
help him put his footprint on the Pirate program.
“My footprint will be to have a disciplined team and
to have players with solid character,”
noted Holmes. “Overall, I think
our team will be more experienced
and more explosive on
offense and our defense will
attack, blitz and make plays.”
OFFENSE
Although Holmes’ coaching legacy is rooted in
defense, he quickly says he’s pumped up about the
prospects of his team’s offensive unit this fall. That
eagerness is well-founded, considering that just
about every section of the unit is steeped with two
key ingredients – speed and experience.
“The speed we have at the skill positions, running
backs and receivers, will make us an attack type of
offense,” said Holmes.
“It’s a good thing having that kind of speed.”
The Pirates’ entire offensive line is expected to
return, a unit that helped the team average 353.6
yards of total offense per game in 2007. The
expected starters are redshirt sophomore Michael
Ola (6-3, 278) and junior Nicholas Royal (6-4, 323)
at the tackle slots, senior Everett Hopkins (6-4, 303)
at center, and juniors Dennis Conley (6-4, 257) and
Ryan Cave (6-4, 360) at the guard positions. Key
reserves on the line include juniors Devion Wright
(6-0, 300) and Kingsley Wiafe (6-4, 290) at guard
and sophomore Trey Fowkles (6-4, 300) at tackle.
“The offensive line is the first line of defense in
protecting the quarterback,” said Holmes. “The
offensive line has experience. They know the
offense. When you get these guys in place, you
can run whatever kind of offense you want to run.”
33

34
At running back, Holmes said his squad returns an
experienced, speedy and powerful core who can catch
the ball coming out of the backfield. The contingent
will be led by sophomore halfback Dennis Mathis (6-9,
190), the top returning ball-carrier who had 59 carries
for 219 yards (19.9 avg.) as a freshman in 2007, and
redshirt junior Ralph Steward (5-11, 240), whose
blocking skills make him an impressive fullback.
Likewise, the Pirates’ wide receivers are capable of
being big-play performers. It’s expected that four,
sometimes five, receivers will be on the field at any
given time, but there’s no question about who the go-to
guys will be: seniors Jeremy Gilchrist (5-10, 174) and
Kevin Teel (5-9, 168). In 2007, Gilchrist led the MEAC
in receiving with 69 catches for 1,043 yards (15.1 ypc)
and nine touchdowns – becoming the first Pirate ever
to catch for 1,000 yards in a season. Meanwhile, Teel
ranked second on the team and eighth in the MEAC in
receiving with 33 receptions for 433 yards (13.1 ypc)
and four scores. Another senior, Justin Brown (6-2,
200, Sr.), ranked third with 28 catches for 483 yards
(17.2 ypc) and two TDs.
In the Pirates’ system, the positions of fullback and
tight end are virtually interchangeable. In fact, in the
Pirates’ scheme of things, the fullback is utilized in the
tight end slot without having to fill both slots.
Accordingly, 6-4, 250-pound
junior Darius Collins
is tapped to start
at tight end when that position figures into the
play-calling schemes.
That leaves the pivotal slot of quarterback, where the
status of last year’s starter is in question. T.J. Mitchell,
a 6-3, 189-pound junior, may be sidelined to
concentrate on his academic studies. Last year,
Mitchell led the MEAC in passing with 209.9 passing
yards per game and he ranked second in total offense,
averaging 222.6 yards per contest. His back-up,
Hubert Bynes, a 6-5, 236-pound redshirt sophomore,
averaged 38 yards per game in three games last season.
Should Mitchell not be active for the 2008 season,
Bynes will be thrust into full-time duty.
“...I think our team will be more experienced and more explosive on
“We were fortunate to have two quarterbacks who
saw starting action last year,” said Holmes. “T.J. is a
well-experienced guy, but I can see either he or Bynes
getting the ball to the wide receivers and being attack
kind of passers.”
Holmes said he’s confident that his offensive unit is
ready to make a name for itself this season.
“Anytime you don’t turn the ball over and you can
control the clock, you can win football games,” noted
Holmes. “I think our offense will be more experienced
and more explosive. I’m expecting
big things out of the offense.”

DEFENSE
Despite the high expectations which loom over
the Pirates’ offensive unit, there’s no doubt where
Holmes stands when assessing his team’s chances
of returning to MEAC championship status.
“I haven’t changed,” said Holmes. “Defense wins
championships. It always starts with the defense.”
Up front, Holmes and his staff will have to deal
with a defensive line that was hit hard by graduation.
In fact, some of the premiere names in the NCAA
Football Championship Subdivision will no longer
don Hampton’s blue and white, such as Kendall
Langford, an end who led the team and ranked sixth
in the MEAC in tackles with 71 along with five sacks;
Marcus Dixon, an end who ranked fourth on the
team and third in the MEAC in tackles with 58 along
with six sacks; and Vernon Bryant, a tackle who
ranked 10th on the team in tackles with 48 in
addition to four sacks.
But the cupboard isn’t dry.
“The ‘Big Three’ may be gone, but we still have
some guys coming back who can fill those slots,”
said Holmes. “The guys up front make the
secondary look good.”
Expecting to fill the shoes of the exited defensive
linemen are Charles Young (6-6, 254, R-Jr.) and
Drefus Lane (6-4, 250, So.) at the end slots, with
Dan Allen (6-3, 245, So.) and Franklin Frazier (6-2,
245, Jr.) at the tackle slots. Of the four linemen,
Frazier is the only one to see substantial action
last season, as he played in nine games and
ranked 12th on the team in tackles with 37.
Quite to the contrary, the Pirates’ linebacking
corps just may be the strength of the entire
team. It has the ability to stunt and blitz,
almost at will. The experience of the unit
is something that can’t be coached.
Leading the way at linebacker for Hampton are
senior Charles Robinson (6-4, 212), senior Wakeem
Goode (5-11, 227) and junior Michael Swett (6-
2,225). A year ago, Robinson garnered 58 tackles
(tied for third on team) along with five sacks and
one interception, while Goode contributed 52
tackles (seventh on team) in addition to 2.5 sacks
and an interception. Meanwhile, Swett 26 tackles
and three sacks.
“As a group, the experience of our linebackers is
something that you can’t coach,” said Holmes.
“The group is definitely one of the strongest areas
of our team.”
offense and our defense will attack, blitz and make plays.”
The defensive secondary for the Pirates is almost
equally experienced and talented, as are the
linebackers. The team returns five excellent
corners who Holmes says can “shut down anybody”
and a set of safeties which is likewise gifted.
The returning cornerbacks include seniors Sam Pope
(6-1, 200) and Jackie Bates (5-10, 180), both starters.
Pope was the MEAC’s No. 2 leader in interceptions
in 2007 with five, which were returned for 128
yards and one touchdown. Bates had a pair of
interceptions and he led the conference in passes
defended with an average of 1.2 per game (10
breakups and two interceptions).
A pair of seniors will lead the charge for the Pirates
at the safety slots. Tobin Lyon
(6-0, 190) will again start at
free safety after tying for
second on the team in
interceptions with two
in addition to 18
tackles, while
Darrell Harris (6-1,
200) saw limited
action in three
games but looked
impressive during
the spring.
35

36
What about the special teams?
“At Hampton, we go into every game thinking that we’ll
win the special teams phase and at least one of the other
phases, either offense or defense,” said Holmes. “You don’t
just be number one in punt returns – you work on it.
Special teams will
be a major part of our winning this season.”
The beauty of Hampton’s special teams unit is that the
players’ tremendous speed and experience automatically
give the Pirates an edge. Both the kicker, Carlo Turavani
(5-10, 180, So.), and the punter, Jahmal Blanchard (6-3,
182, Jr.), are back, as well as one of the best return
specialists in the nation in Gilchrist.
Last year, Blanchard led the MEAC in punting,
averaging 43.1 yards per boot, while Turavani
averaged 6.3 points per game (No.8 in the MEAC),
connecting on 36-of-39 PATs and 11-of-15 field
goals. Gilchrist, meanwhile, reaped All-MEAC
and All-America honors after leading the nation
in punt returns with 19.0 yards per return to go
along with three touchdowns. Teel was
equally adept at returning kickoffs,
averaging 20.2 yards per return with
one score.
Finally, there’s the schedule, which will
certainly be a challenge for the Pirates.
In addition to tremendous parity, which
may make 2008 one of the most exciting
seasons in the MEAC in decades, two
tough non-conference foes headline
the schedule, including defending
Southwestern Athletic Conference
champion Jackson State University,
which Hampton will face in the
MEAC/SWAC Challenge on Aug. 31
in Orlando, Fla., and Southern Illinois
University, which the Pirates will face
in Carbondale, Ill. on Sept. 6.
“I think we can beat anybody on this schedule
as long as we play as one,” said Holmes.
“I can’t wait for the season to start. This is
crazy. I don’t feel any pressure. Football
is easy – it’s tackling and blocking. The challenge is
emphasizing all of the other components of being a
student-athlete.
“I’m excited about being a local guy,” added Holmes, a
native of nearby Newport News, Va. “Folks are excited
about coming over and being a part of our program.
I can’t wait for the season to start.”
