KARIM’S
NOTE
With the inaugural issue of the V List under our belt, I am pleased to report that the V List had an overwhelming response from our community both
nationally and internationally. In this issue the V List goes Viva Italia. Our reporters interviewed a gentleman of Italian descent - Bob Lenarduzzi whose
name is synonymous with soccer. We received some useful information from him. In the V Confi dential we off er you a selection of some famous Italian
brands available around town. I cannot talk about Italy and not mention their famous ‘vino’. We have obtained expert advice to inform you on fi ne Italian
wines. I would also like to congratulate this vibrant community for adding so much zest to the local scene and the world stage at large. It has been an
exciting summer with the World Cup, Tour de France, and locally the Celebration of Lights (the fi reworks). It is with great pleasure I am able to provide
you with stories of organizations in Vancouver which are continuously being positive to bring the world together. In this issue we share the story of the
North Shore Family Services and the wonderful work they are doing. On the economic scene the Real Estate Market continues its steady progress, and
unemployment in British Columbia is still at an amazing low level. We have had a very prosperous 2006 and look forward to an even brighter future.
Many people have asked me what the V List is all about. In short the V List aims to pursue a happy lifestyle and success.
I welcome you to join us.
HOPE, HELP
& HEALING
Family Services of the North Shore
The V List recently caught up with Beth Rees, Director of Operations for
the Family Services of the North Shore (also known as FSNS) to learn
more about this non profi t organization which has been serving the North
Shore residents for over half a century. The past 55 years has put the
FSNS under a number of transformations but their fundamental mission
has remained the same: They provide “hope, help and healing” to families
and individuals in the community. They have a broad range of education,
counselling and volunteer services. They are leaders in the areas of
clinical treatment of family violence and childhood sexual abuse in the
community.
The extraordinary level of commitment shown by staff in the North
Vancouver offi ces is visible from the time you enter their offi ces. Many staff
members have been touched in one way or another by issues that affect
the very people who use their services.
Rees, who has obtained a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology and has
worked for non-profi t organizations both in the United States and Canada,
was instrumental in the redesign of FSNS sexual abuse counseling
program to include intensive counselling and support to all members of a
family affected by sexual abuse.
The FSNS offers a diverse range of education and counselling programs
and services. The clinical counselling services comprise of Family
Counselling, Child & Adolescent Sexual Abuse, Stopping the Violence,
Employee Assistance, Family Preservation and Family Support programs.
They also offer Adaptation, Orientation and Integration for new immigrants
and an I Hope Family Centre for parents of children age 0 - 5 and other
parent education programs that support parents in building healthy,
“I was profoundly impacted at a young
age when a member of my extended
family was sexually abused and I knew,
even at that age, this would be my life’s
work”
– Beth Rees
functioning families. They work with people from all walks of life, from oldto-young,
from wealthy-to-disadvantaged, from North Vancouver-to-Lion’s
Bay and Bowen Island. They fundraise to ensure services are accessible
to all.
With an annual cost of $2.9 million and only 69% of the total funding
coming from all three levels of government and other grants, FSNS relies
heavily on private donations and their own fundraising endeavours. “We
are fortunate to have the support of many individuals and local businesses
who feel compelled to help ensure that all, regardless of income, can have
access to quality, innovative services,” Rees says, adding “the commitments
from these individuals and businesses are long-term which speaks for their
belief in the programs we offer.” Five anonymous donors pledged $65,000
for fi ve years which was crucial funding for the I Hope Family Centre to
remain open. The North Shore Auto Mall donated $20,000 to help fund
Safer Places; an agency-wide initiative aimed to stop the cycle of family
violence and childhood sexual abuse through education, intervention and
support. Last year, FSNS raised over $885,000 from private donations
and fundraising. Over 175 volunteers worked thousands of hours to
ensure that 675 low-income families and seniors received support through
the Christmas Bureau. Over 100 volunteers worked to help patients and
their families with terminal illness through the North Shore Palliative Care
program. “As long as there are people who need our services, we will be
here to support them in whatever way we can.” said Rees.
GOURMET ENTERTAINING
CHEF AT YOUR SIDE…
It’s 11am and Robert Byford can be found picking through vegetables at the local market. His
basket has a select few ingredients so far but after a decade of preparing menus, fresh organic
produce is still the best way to showcase his talent. “It’s not complicated” Robert explains “it’s about
clean simple fl avors, using the freshest product available and letting the combination of fl avours
compliment each other”. Sounds simple enough, and he makes it look easy too!
It’s now 1.30pm and he’s driving across town to pick up fi sh that just arrived today. He always has
a planned menu but if there is something unique that has just arrived he adds it to his list. He’s built
a relationship with the best suppliers in the city and has utilized them for years. “There is a mutual
respect and a friendship” he explains as he drives to his meat supplier, again chosen for quality and
consistency. Inspecting his purchases to make sure of the order, “you only have one chance to
impress your guests” and Chef Robert doesn’t want to leave room for chance.
The Chef is preparing for
a party of 12 tonight in the
kitchen of a local West
Vancouver home that
makes most restaurants
envious. “So many people
have these spectacular
kitchens that never see
their full potential“, that
is until Robert is invited
over. As Executive Chef
at Quattro on Fourth,
Caffe de Medici, and
past Executive Chef of
The Beach House at
Dundarave right here in
West Vancouver, Robert
is no stranger to the
Dungeness Crab Stack Sensation. culinary community. He
has received many accolades for his culinary talents but best enjoys the
personal interaction between the guests that venture into the kitchen to
see the magic that he creates.
Over the years Robert has offered his culinary talent to a select few that
he has gotten to know. For those who have been invited to one of these
exclusive engagements – they start to plan an evening where Robert’s
talents can be showcased or hope they are invited back! With everything
prepared in your home in front of your eyes, there aren’t any surprises.
You don’t have to worry about a corkage fee either, Robert is more than
capable of selecting wine from your cellar to pair with dinner and while he’s
there, give you some pointers on what to drink as well as what to hide for
a few more years.
- Chef Robert Byford
“It’s not just about the food; it’s creating the whole experience.” A big
part of that experience is watching the “show” that goes on in the kitchen.
04 | THE V LIST | FALL 06 | www.thevlist.com
The classy, seamless service that pairs with the remarkable food is also
something to see. “Once a guest commented on how she didn’t need to
ask for a thing and I replied that’s the way it should be” Robert explains.
The attention to detail lies not just in the food. You may ask, what gives him
this passion and drive? “We need to live up to our name”, Robert replies
“by creating a memorable experience”. The table settings, starched linen,
fresh fl owers, the whole restaurant experience in your home without the
next table listening to your conversation. With the busy lifestyles of today,
more and more people want to slow down and enjoy the company of their
guests in their home. They want to relax without having to wait for the host
to sit down after serving the next course.
Looking for a truly memorable experience? Sit back or lie by the pool while
your chef is shopping for the menu, spend the time getting ready for your
guests while he is preparing in your kitchen, entertain and enjoy as your
guests arrive knowing that there is a chef at your side who has taken care
of everything!
There are no concerns when Robert Byford is in your house and the best
part is his team polishes the crystal and leaves your kitchen spotless!
Give Robert Byford a
call at 604.889.9919
for a chef at your side
at your next gathering at
your own home.

WEST VANCOUVER
West Vancouver Market Comment
Lower mainland housing stats set a record for the month of July 2006 and
this was refl ected in West Vancouver with builders purchasing lots with
older homes sited on them which are ripe for redevelopment. The median
sales price of a Detached home in West Vancouver, according to the Real
Estate Board is now $1,200,220, the highest in Greater Vancouver. The
increase in Real Estate prices is more apparent in Vancouver but it exists
all across the country and it is caused by low interest rates, increased
immigration plus more buyers getting into the market and to a lesser
degree speculation on some buyers part. Prices are increasing although
at a slightly slower rate than before. A strong market is in everyone’s best
interest.
MARKET WATCH July home sales return to normal summer market cycle
Vancouver, B.C. August 2, 2006 - The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) reports that total residential sales for detached, attached and
apartment properties reached 2,732 units in July 2006, a decrease of 25.2 per cent when compared to the 3,652 units sold in July 2005.
“It’s important to note that the sales fi gures for July are refl ective of a more traditional summer market cycle, when consumers take a break for vacations,”
says REBGV president Rick Valouche. “Last year was the best year on record for real estate in the Greater Vancouver area and the 3,652 units we moved in
July 2005 were a bit of a market anomaly. The numbers we are seeing this summer are closer to the sales fi gures we saw in 2004.
“At 23,223 units, our year-to-date sales indicate that we are still in the midst of one of the strongest real estate markets in our board’s history,” notes
Valouche. “Consumers who want to better understand the housing market, and who are looking for guidance to help them make the best buying or selling
decisions, should contact their local REALTOR®.”
According to Multiple Listings Service® (MLS®) data, sales of apartment properties decreased by 24.2 per cent to 1,188 sales in July 2006 compared to 1,567
sales in July 2005. The benchmark price of an apartment property in Greater Vancouver, calculated by the MLSLink® Housing Price Index, is $328,966, up
22.8 per cent from one year ago.
Sales of detached properties decreased by 28.3 per cent in July 2006 to 1,031 sales, compared to 1,438 sales in July 2006. The benchmark price of a
detached unit is $644,461, up 19.4 per cent from last year.
Sales of attached properties decreased by 20.7 per cent in July 2006 to 513 sales, compared to 647 sales in July 2005. The benchmark price of an attached
unit is $404,537, up 20.3 per cent from a year ago.
The Real Estate industry is a key economic driver in British Columbia. In 2004, dollar volume sales
of homes in Greater Vancouver set a new record at more than $13.8 billion. Based on this fi gure,
Greater Vancouver home sales in 2004 generated over $1 billion in related sales.

North Vancouver Market Comment
Another strong month for the Real Estate Market in North Vancouver with
the median selling price for Detached homes now at $733105. Attached
homes now at $479,688 and Apartments now at $322,092, all up over
last year. The number of listings in all 3 categories is up over 2005 and so
should help to steady the market by giving buyers more choice and assist
them by eliminating “panic” buying. The redevelopment of the old Versatile
Shipyard at the foot of Lonsdale is now starting to attract the interest of
potential buyers. With the cost of land, labour, materials and development
charges on the increase, aff ordability is a key word in the buyer’s life today.
SUCCESSFULLY SOLD
The new owner of this home, Alexander Bardin, admired its contemporary esthetic from the fi rst time he saw it. Now that he’s happily
settled here, he also loves the feeling of the open living space and the city and ocean views from its generous decks. “It’s like living in a
penthouse,” he says, “only you also have a yard.” The original owners had exactly that idea in mind when they commissioned local architect
Brad Lamoureux to design a house where they could retire. With the master bedroom on the main fl oor and a provision for an elevator, this
compact 4,000-sq.-ft dwelling off ers Mr. Bardin and his family a comfortable home for many years to come.
Built of concrete, glass, and steel, the house is unique among its more traditional neighbours. These materials also appealed to Mr. Bardin
Virani Real Estate Advisors | 604. 913.1888 | www.thevlist.com
for their enduring quality and promise of low maintenance. The home’s design, while utilitarian, lacks nothing in drama: the stage-like
central staircase off ers a stunning focal point in the kitchen and living areas which are perfect for entertaining.
VIRANI Real Estate Advisors marketed this home through its network of more than 500 brokerages around the world, focusing on Europe
and Asia. Karim Virani felt that the contemporary design would have more appeal in those areas. He was right, except that the European
buyer was already here; Mr. Bardin is from Moscow but has lived in Vancouver for the past fi ve years.
While Mr. Bardin was looking for a new home, Mr. Virani also sold his previous one. The deals were completed in such an effi cient manner
that his family was able to focus on the exciting prospect of moving. “It’s not a business for him,” says Mr. Bardin, “it’s an art.”
Maserati Made for the Fast Lane
This Italian masterpiece is best described as a Luxury
Sedan with a Sports Car Soul.
Made for the fast lane, the Maserati comes from a racing heritage. The
original design was by the fi ve Maserati brothers in 1914. This is when
their passion for style and sports came alive. Their creation was known
for its light weight body and irresistible beauty. The goal of building fast,
reliable, elegant cars has remained consistent.
Maserati is making a mark in the Luxury Sedan market. Luxurious in look,
materials and construction, it is fondly mistaken as an old fashioned car.
Some of Italy’s fi nest designers have worked with the Maserati. Italian
tailored leather chairs are found front and rear. Maserati is one of Italy’s
most beautiful exports.
The Quattroporte hit production in 2001; Maserati itself has graced us for
over 90 years. Although the name “Quattroporte” is Italian for four doors it
is unique to the other Luxury full-size Sedans. It is an exclusive car made
for enthusiasts who like to drive. The Quattroporte also comes with two
magnifi cent versions; the Sport GT and Executive GT. The Sport GT can
be distinguished by its handsome 20 inch rims. The Executive GT is a fully
loaded Quattroporte and is differentiated by its unique grill.
The 2007 Quattroporte arrivies in Western Canada early November. Layout: front-engine, RWD
> Base Engine: 400hp, 4.2l, V8
> Acceleration (0-100km/h): 5.3 seconds
> Top Speed: 165 Miles per hour
> Seating Capacity: 5
> Fuel Economy (Estimated City): 18.9/100km
V: What did you enjoy about living in West Vancouver?
SO: West Vancouver has a real sense of community. I lived in
Ambleside so I was on the beach everyday. I loved being outdoors and
near the water.
V: What are your dislikes about living in this area?
SO: The Bridge.
V: When the time comes where do you plan to retire?
SO: I love living here and then ideally driving south for the winters. I have
arthritis in my hips so when the rain comes; I really need to fi nd sun.
V: What is your idea of perfect happiness?
SO: Not having stress in my life. I would love to learn how to deal with
stress properly and maintain grace under pressure.
V: What is your greatest personal fear?
SO: I never want to get comfortable with my abilities. I always want to
grow and enhance my skills. Another big fear of mine is having a career
ending injury.
V: Which words or phrases do you over use?
SO: Recently I have a bad habit of sarcastically saying ‘that’s really
hysterical.’
V: What does your average day look like?
SO: I begin my day at 5:45am by meditating. I then do Pilates at 7:30am.
I have daily ballet rehearsals between 11:15 and 6:15pm. I then go home
PEOPLE PROFILE
V: What do you consider your greatest achievement?
SO: I recently won the Clifford. E. Lee Choreography award for
a choreography piece I did. I was proud to be recognized as a
choreographer. I also felt very accomplished after I completed the ten
day Vipassana meditation. It was a challenge to spend 10 hours a day
not moving.
V: What would you like to accomplish that you haven’t done yet?
SO: I would like to create a full length ballet and have a Ballet Company
commission me to do it.
V: Who are your heroes?
SO: My mother and my colleagues.
V: Any funny Ballet stories to share?
SO: I was performing “Swan Lake” in Seoul Korea. There was a blackout
on the stage where all the girls were to go off stage and change outfi ts.
Unfortunately they blacked out our change room as well. We could not
see a thing! Our dressers helped us as much as they could. We had to
go out to perform a slow piece to fi nd out none of us were in the right
outfi ts. The girls were either trembling with tears or laughter. It was a
nightmare!
V: What is your pet peeve?
SO: People who don’t have good table manners. It also bothers me
when people forget the small things.
V: What do you like most in a man?
details.
V: What is your personal motto?
SO: Relax, breathe and do everything to your fullest potential.
V: What do you most value in your friends?
SO: Honesty.

36 | THE V LIST | FALL 06 | www.thevlist.com
Focus on Holt Renfrew | Story by Virginia Leeming | Photos by Magnus Reed.
The new looks for fall fashion 2006 are as diverse as they
are delightful. Sensuous, romantic, rustic or retro, from
country-inspired chunky knits to lacy Edwardian outfi ts,
from menswear-inspired suits to super-feminine dresses,
fashion’s route to elegance takes many different paths.
Some designers have wandered down a bucolic country road for
their tweeds, tartans and Aran knits. But today’s look has a modern
twist. Asymmetrical hemline, pleat here or there, and paired with
a new shaped skirt and the whole look becomes casual but funky.
One of the hottest trends is the equestrian hat. And while we
probably won’t see traditional Wellies striding down Vancouver
streets, a touch of equestrian takes your image to absolutely now.
Military infl uences make a perennial appearance in fashion
circles because fashion designers can’t resist plundering
the trappings of uniform. Chanel did with her French sailor
sweaters, and Karl Lagerfeld borrows now and then from
the military look. Think piping, epaulettes, brass buttons and
tabs. The military cape coat gets designer salutes this season.
If you are going to make fashion statements this fall why not
embrace a new approach to shape. Actually it is an old shape, one
that Balenciaga or Cardin proposed in the ‘50s – cocoon. Jackets
and tunics drop from rounded shoulders and balloon out ever so
slightly. While the voluminous top above the waist is important,
below the waist is skinny. If skinny just isn’t you, opt for the wideleg
trouser. Another fresh shape is the bell skirt, very modern when
paired with a body-hugging top. The three-quarter sleeve has made
its entrance on fashion’s fall stage especially on coats and toppers.
So naturally the long glove pairs with this look for a stylish fi nish.
Watch for the dolman sleeve and inverted triangular-shaped tops.
The mini is back with a vengeance if you have the legs
for this look. A gentle alternative is a long hemline.
Couture has permeated the catwalk, and here shape is the
key. Pagoda shoulders that YSL would have called his own

in the ‘60s are showing up on couture-inspired jackets.
Couture details such as bows, ruffl es and fur trim are at the
forefront. And the dress for fall 2006 is reminiscent of the
styles popular in the mid ‘60s. Everything old is new again.
Opulence translates into embroidered fabrics, brocade,
beadwork and infl uences of the Far East or heraldic
motifs. Lush pieces for making after-dark statements.
Every fall has its wonderful palette of colours and fall 2006 is no
exception. Muddied darks such as cinnabar and olive are important
and the grey family from anthracite to pearl to charcoal offers a
neutral background for many ways of accessorizing. If there is
one regal colour family ruling it is red. Crimson, claret, vermillion,
lipstick red, even the purple/reds are sizzling hot, hot, hot.
The exotic look of leopard cannot be over emphasized this
season. A favourite for ages of Dolce and Gabanna and other
leading designers, (who doesn’t love the pattern), leopard is
showing up on shoes, gloves, scarves, coats, you name it and
some fashion house has done it in leopard The spotted pattern
works best if it is paired with plain black or red. Never head to toe.
The absolutely must-have hosiery is opaque
black. It underscores every colour, especially red.
Platform shoes are important in almost every designer
collection. Heels are chunkier and many styles are
versions of the wedgie. The pump has a rounder toe and
thicker heel this season. Boots help balance the new
silhouettes. For instance when worn over skinny leggings.
Gold is the leading metal colour if you want to invest in jewellery
for the season. Metallic perforated-leather bib necklaces update
the strapless dress with instant chic. Ropes of chains and
horse bit bracelets fi nish off the fall fashion statement with élan.
Menswear is taking a new path to sartorial elegance. Taking their
cues from uniforms, designers from Dolce & Gabbana to Karl
Lagerfeld are serving up offi cer coats, pea jackets, belted trench
coats and leather coats. If he isn’t stepping out in military style
he will be clad after dark in velvet jackets and vests, romantic
shirts and skinny jeans. Tailoring is returning to elegance with
three-piece suits, waistcoats, accosts and boot shoes.

Building Passion
For Soccer
Bob Lenarduzzi looks out a window from the fi fth-fl oor Water Street
offi ce of the Whitecaps soccer club, down to a mess of railroad tracks
scattered with cars. He’s passed by this scene, with its stunning
backdrop of ocean and mountains, every workday for the past three
years. It seems an unlikely place for a fi eld of dreams, this narrow strip
of land long used for shipping goods in and out of Vancouver’s port.
But now, the landmark soccer stadium that fi rst seemed an impossible
dream is almost within grasp. “It’s been a long time coming,” he says,
with his friendly grin. “But I believe we’ll get there.”
>>>As the public face of the Whitecaps organization, Lenarduzzi has
taken his share of pummeling over the past year from opponents of the
$65-million project.
>>>In July, city council fi nally gave the Gastown stadium a conditional
go-ahead. While the club must still address issues such as organizing
traffi c fl ow and how the design will fi t with the heritage character of the
area, the focus has shifted from defense to offense.
A state-of-the-art coliseum here will have an appeal far greater than
a straight sports facility, especially as questions are raised about
the future of BC Place. Groups including the Vancouver Symphony,
the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, the organizers of
the 2009 World Police and Fire Games, concert production giants
House of Blues and Clear Channel, and the Vancouver 2010 Olympic
organizing committee have all indicated they would like to use the venue.
>>>But this will be a soccer stadium fi rst. To make it a success, the
Whitecaps must be a team worth watching. Now, a sell-out crowd
at Swangard Stadium totals 5,700. Can soccer generate the kind of
successful fan base in Vancouver that hockey enjoys?
“Absolutely,” says Lenarduzzi, without hesitation. First, it’s been here
before. But when he played for the Whitecaps in the early 1980s,
Empire Stadium was regularly packed with 28,000 people. After the
North American Soccer League folded in 1984, successive teams in
Vancouver struggled to bring audiences back.
>>>Things changed for the better in 2002, when software developer
Greg Kerfoot bought the team. He has been willing to inject the kind
of cash necessary for the club to expand. Adding sales staff to what
had been a bare-bones operation was the fi rst step. No one knows
professional soccer in Vancouver better than Lenarduzzi, whose long
and celebrated career as a Whitecap and consequently 86er began in
“It seems an unlikely place for a fi eld
of dreams, this narrow strip of land
long used for shipping goods in and
out of Vamcouver’s port. But now,
the landmark soccer stadium that fi rst
seemed an impossible dream is almost
within grasp.”
1974. He’s served as coach and now administrator, and he’s never been
more optimistic. “Greg’s commitment is for the long haul,” Lenarduzzi
says. “So we can build from the bottom up, and that’s what we’re
doing.”
>>>Already the Whitecaps organization has grown from one men’s and
one women’s team to 16 teams, including youth and reserve squads.
Last year’s handful of sellout games were a good indication that they are
heading in the right direction. Maybe his passion stems from his Italian
roots, but Lenarduzzi is positive that this stadium is the ticket to the next
level.
>>>Of course it’s the pinnacle tournament, but he points to the
excitement generated by the World Cup as a signal of the sport’s
potential. This summer, Germany impeccably hosted the event,
watched by an accumulated audience of 34 billion. Billed as “the fans’
World Cup,” it seemed to demonstrate more than ever the global
appeal of soccer. Unlikely teams proved themselves against perennial
powerhouses. The Ukraine, competing for the fi rst time, reached
the quarter fi nals, and Australia also emerged from its group. Ghana
defeated pre-tournament favourites from the Czech Republic, and tiny
Trinidad and Tobago earned fan points by putting up a good fi ght against
England in a 2-0 loss. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by
South Africa, furthering soccer’s foothold in every corner of the earth.
>>>In Canada this summer, World Cup games attracted 38 million
accumulated viewers. “Those numbers are staggering,” he points out.
“That’s a pretty good base to work from.”
>>>In his effort to build more fan support, Lenarduzzi hopes to attract
more interest from Vancouver’s multicultural communities. In July, the
Whitecaps hosted the Nations Cup, bringing in teams from Cardiff City
(Wales), China and India. The Indian games drew more than 5,000
local fans. Giving credit to Kerfoot’s willingness to test markets like this,
Lenarduzzi imagines the club playing host to other nations, such as Iran.
The new stadium will likely be the primary venue for the 2011 Women’s
World Cup, an event that is growing tremendously in popularity.
The old fans that drifted away from soccer after 1984 may have been
unimpressed with the level of play. By the time the new stadium is built,
Lenarduzzi aims to have the men’s Whitecaps playing in the Major
League Soccer, which is the best in North America. Already the stadium
has proven at least an initial appeal, as 61 companies have made initial
deposits for suites.
LIFESTYLE
>>>In a professional career that began at age 15, Lenarduzzi visited
many stadiums. And yet when he’s asked which one was his favourite,
it’s not a shiny new facility that springs to his mind, or the scene of a
personal triumph. It’s Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, where he played
several times in World Cup qualifying games. He even jokes that his
Canadian squad was welcome there because they were easy targets for
the Mexicans.
>>>The concrete structure is not architecturally interesting, and when it’s
empty it looks old and gray. What makes it fantastic is the people. With
120,000 fans perched on a steep incline and screaming for their team,
the player on the fi eld feels like the walls are falling down. “We just need
to get some of that passion here,” he says. “And we will.”

PARAMEDICS : RESPONDING TO
THE COMMUNITY
Mike Binns EMA II Paramedic for 20 years, with Paramedic Lisa Crowder
“. . . no matter how long and
busy the shift was, Mike just
had a way to make us all
laugh”.
by V List Reporter
CREDITS
44 year old Mike Binns was born and raised in North Vancouver’s
Delbrook community, and still proudly calls the North Shore his home.
Married to his wife Dawn, the Binns’ are excited to be expecting their
fi rst child. Dawn, an Emergency nurse, fi rst met Mike when she was
working at Lions Gate Hospital. Dawn tells us that she “was intrigued by
his [Mike’s] sense of humor, no matter how long and busy the shift was,
Mike just had a way to make us all laugh, especially me”.
Mikes’ exemplary career as a Paramedic 20 years ago started in the
Vancouver Regional Dispatch center, when he transferred from the North
Vancouver RCMP civilian dispatch. He quickly earned the respect of his
dispatch colleagues and shortly afterwards made the move to become a
street paramedic. Once trained, he went out onto the street, but for the
fi rst several years he would fi ll in for the Dispatch Center.
Over the past twenty years, Mike Binns has seen many important
improvements in Paramedic training and equipment. When he fi rst
started, Mike remembers the ambulances were simply glorifi ed vans and
horses, now they have state of the art vehicles loaded with some unique
equipment. Carrying the stretcher up and down entire stairways is a thing
of the past with the newer folding, much lighter stretchers; the job has
become physically easier.
His involvement with the Ambulance Service as a whole does not end in
North Vancouver. Because the BC Ambulance is a Provincial Service,
Mike sits on several committees with the focus of improving the service
brought to citizens and the Paramedic work standards . Mike likes to
debate issues, and thinks it is an important part of moving forward. He
believes that wearing the union title allows him to bring these issues to
the forefront.
Since the beginning of his career, Mike has always been involved with the
future of the Paramedic fi eld. After a stint as a Paramedic Chief in Lytton,
BC, Mike came back to the North Shore and became heavily involved
with the Ambulance Paramedics of BC: the Union that represents the
3,300 Paramedics in the province. Serving as the Regional Vice President
for the GVRD, Mike contributes hundreds of hours to the profession,
even when he’s not riding in the Ambulance.
