(Llanos de San Andrés and Llanos de San<br />

Juan). Throughout the region, teos<strong>in</strong>te<br />

grows exclusively as a weed <strong>in</strong> cultivated<br />

maize fields.<br />

Balsas River Bas<strong>in</strong><br />

A low region (average altitude 1,000 masl)<br />

between the southern Sierra Madre and the<br />

Neovolcanic Cordillera, between 17 and<br />

20° N and 98 and 103° W (Fig. 10), ra<strong>in</strong>fall<br />

varies from 500 to 1,200 mm, with an<br />

annual average of 650 mm. Temperatures<br />

are high, with annual averages up to 28° C.<br />

Climate is of the savanna type, hot and<br />

dry, with dry w<strong>in</strong>ters (Aw).<br />

predom<strong>in</strong>antly <strong>in</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>ous areas rang<strong>in</strong>g from Chilpanc<strong>in</strong>go at Mazatlán, Palo Blanco, Acahuizotla,<br />

800 to 1,900 masl. The most important regions for El R<strong>in</strong>cón and Chilapa; 2) north of Iguala at Taxco<br />

each state are:<br />

route; and 4) east of Huitzuco at<br />

Paso Morelos and San Miguel<br />

Hidalgo <strong>in</strong> subhumid, semihot
