I would like to invite you to our <strong>International</strong> <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Chapitre</strong> on <strong>the</strong> 30th <strong>of</strong><br />

September to <strong>the</strong> 3rd <strong>of</strong> October 2011 in <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta is<br />

located in Central Java and is a city rich not only in culture and history,<br />

boasting many historical monuments, but is also a student city with many fine<br />

universities. It has a population <strong>of</strong> 3 million inhabitants and ano<strong>the</strong>r 1 million<br />

migrant students and has an <strong>International</strong> Airport with easy access from<br />

Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta for those traveling from <strong>the</strong> West and from Perth<br />

and Bali for those traveling from <strong>the</strong> East.<br />

This <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Chapitre</strong> will be unique in that our host will be HRH <strong>the</strong> Sultan <strong>of</strong><br />

Yogyakarta , Hamengkubuwono X, who is not only <strong>the</strong> King but also <strong>the</strong><br />

Governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Special Territory <strong>of</strong> Yogyakarta and traces his lineage back to<br />

1293. The Sultan will not only host <strong>the</strong> Dinner at his Palace on Saturday <strong>the</strong> 1st<br />

<strong>of</strong> October 2011 but will make available <strong>the</strong> inner courtyards <strong>of</strong> his Palace for<br />

our Induction Ceremony and Dinner ( hi<strong>the</strong>rto available only for visiting heads<br />

<strong>of</strong> states and royalties). This Dinner will be served colonial or " rijst tafel" style<br />

with dishes from <strong>the</strong> Royal Kitchen served at your table by maidens carrying<br />

different dishes with <strong>the</strong> 10 favorite dishes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last 10 sultans among <strong>the</strong>m; all<br />

this in an atmosphere <strong>of</strong> royal opulence and <strong>the</strong> background <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Palace<br />

Gamelan orchestra. Here <strong>the</strong> culture and culinary <strong>of</strong> Central Java are truly<br />

intertwined.<br />

Arrangement has also been made for <strong>the</strong> 10th Century Hindu temple <strong>of</strong><br />

Prambanan to be opened exclusively for our Welcome Dinner on Friday 30th<br />

September 2011 served grazing style with barbecued lamb and o<strong>the</strong>r dishes<br />

roasted on a spit in <strong>the</strong> true <strong>Rotisseurs</strong> cooking style, all this toge<strong>the</strong>r with a "<br />

Son et lumiaire" spectacular show. In addition, <strong>the</strong> venue for our Farewell<br />

Dinner on Sunday 2nd October is <strong>the</strong> 8th Century Buddhist Temple <strong>of</strong><br />

Borobudur where 4 chefs consisting <strong>of</strong> Chef Farah Quinn, Indonesia's own<br />

celebrity chef, Chef Iqbal Batubara <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Plataran Resort in Magelang Central<br />

Java, Chef Jack Yoss <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> W Resort in Bali, and last but certainly not least,<br />

Chef Egidio Squillace <strong>of</strong> Julios in Perth, whose Restaurant has won <strong>the</strong> Gold<br />

Plate Award for Best Fine Dining Experience. Each Chef will prepare <strong>the</strong>ir two<br />

special European dishes to tantalise our taste buds. The evening will end with a<br />

rare performance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Maharkarya traditional ballet, performed by hundreds<br />

<strong>of</strong> dancers.<br />

In between <strong>the</strong> Dinner events <strong>the</strong>re are options for visits to a c<strong>of</strong>fee plantation,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sultan's cigar factory, silver factories and also fascinating insights into<br />

Javanese life, history and culture.<br />

This <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Chapitre</strong> will be a once-in-lifetime experience for all, as <strong>the</strong> Events<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered are not available to <strong>the</strong> ordinary tourist. For our new members who<br />

have not been inducted, this is <strong>the</strong> rare opportunity to be inducted in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Grand</strong><br />

Palace <strong>of</strong> Yogyakarta in <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Royal Highnesses, <strong>the</strong> Sultan and<br />

Sultana <strong>of</strong> Yogyakarta.<br />

KeratonYogyakarta is <strong>the</strong> last kingdom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> many monarchies that have existed<br />

before in Indonesia, that is still surviving and performing <strong>the</strong>ir culture and ceremonies. It<br />

has survived 10 generations since <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mataram dynasty with King<br />

Mangkubumi to reign, until today, with Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X on <strong>the</strong> throne.<br />
