The purpose <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Geraldton</strong> <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Authority</strong> is:<br />
To encourage trade facilitation by being a pr<strong>of</strong>i table, cost effective and effi cient provider <strong>of</strong> port services through the use<br />
<strong>of</strong> existing and new infrastructure.<br />
The GPA’s areas <strong>of</strong> strategic focus continue to be:<br />
• Business growth<br />
• Infrastructure development and management<br />
• Effective people and stakeholder relationship<br />
•<br />
management<br />
Effective operational, business and risk management<br />
In line with the above focus, the GPA has determined fi ve strategic<br />
goals with strategies and outcomes set for each goal. The fi ve<br />
goals are:<br />
1. To grow our trade to 22 million tonne volume per annum<br />
2. To meet and maintain the State Government’s target for<br />
return on assets<br />
3. To continuously improve the <strong>Port</strong>’s business processes<br />
and systems<br />
4. To create employer <strong>of</strong> choice status<br />
5. To assist the development and effi cient operation <strong>of</strong><br />
Oakajee <strong>Port</strong><br />
In everything we do, we meet our functions as prescribed in the<br />
<strong>Port</strong> Authorities Act 1999:<br />

PURPOSE<br />
(a) Facilitate trade within and through the port and plan for<br />
future growth and development <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Port</strong>.<br />
(b) Undertake or arrange for activities that will encourage<br />
and facilitate the development <strong>of</strong> trade and commerce<br />
generally for the economic benefi t <strong>of</strong> the State through the<br />
use <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Port</strong> and related facilities.<br />
(c) Control business and other activities in the <strong>Port</strong> or in<br />
connection with the operation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Port</strong>.<br />
(d) Be responsible for and promote the safe and effi cient<br />
operation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Port</strong>.<br />
(e) Be responsible for the maintenance and preservation <strong>of</strong><br />
vested property and other property held by it.<br />
(f) Protect the environment <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Port</strong> and minimise the<br />
impact <strong>of</strong> port activities on that environment.<br />
The Act goes on to require that, in performing our functions, we<br />
must:<br />
(a) Act in accordance with prudent commercial principles.<br />
(b) Endeavour to make a pr<strong>of</strong>i t.
