A particular highlight was the visit by Energ?, Secretary Pena and Mr. Toin Gross, director of tlie<br />

Office of Transportation Technologies, on May 30. ’T’he secretary was shown around HTMI, and was<br />

briefed on our neutron residual stress activities.<br />

2.2.3 Conference and Exhibition Participation<br />

An id participated in the SAE ?’ruck and Bus Sho~ and Exposition in Detroit on <strong>October</strong> 14-16,<br />

<strong>1996</strong>, where the HTML was represented bj a display booth and was featured in a presentation given<br />

bq Arvid.<br />

Arvid and several HTML staff attended the annual DOE Customer’s Coordination Meeting in<br />

Dearborn, <strong>October</strong> %-November 1. Several posters illustrating work at the IITML were displayed iii<br />

the poster cxhibition, and a display booth highlighting ORNl,’s accomplislimetits in the lieat engine<br />

topic area included IiTMI,. A livc demonstration of remote microscop) was given during two of the<br />

meeting daq s by members of the Materials Analysis User Center.<br />

Arvid attended the OIT EXPO in Washington February 4-26. <strong>1997</strong>, where the HTMI, shared an<br />

exposition booth u ith the 017 Advanced Industrial Materiala Program display. 7‘he purposes for<br />

attending the confereiice/exposition werc (a) to inform the attendees of the availabilitj and<br />

capabilities of the H‘I’ML and (2) to gain insight into the research, de\elopment, and technology<br />

needs of the various industries represented there. Arvid brought bach the names of several keq<br />

contacts, and litcrature representing all of thc 0 1 1 ”Industries of the Future’. (10Fs): steel,<br />

aluminum, glass, chemicals. refining, forest products, and metal casting, as well as from several<br />

industrial segments represented there that arc not yet full-fledged IOEs-heat-lreating, agriculture,<br />

and forging.<br />

Arvid attended tlie American Ceramic Society Annual Meeting in Cincinnati. Ohio on May 4 -7,<br />

<strong>1997</strong>, where he hosted a display booth at the confereiice’s exposition and presented a paper on the<br />

IITML’s capabilities at a symposium on NDE. He also moderated a panel discusion on NDE.<br />

Arvid participated in the 1’h.L). thesis defense of one of the IIlML Fellowship Program<br />

participants at Pennsylvania State Unicersity. Arvid served on the thesis committee of this student.<br />

Dr. Matt Stough, who has takcn a position at Osrain Sqlvania in New tlanipshire.<br />

Arvid also attended a Materials Research Conference at Northwestern University and presented a<br />

paper on tiTM1, and its capabilitie5.<br />

‘The director and/or staff of the H‘TML attended numerous other conferences and exhibitions this<br />

period, including the ASM/TMS Materials Exposition in Indianapolis, <strong>September</strong> 16-19, where<br />

H TMI, had an exhibition booth, and Discover Ceramics “97,” <strong>September</strong> 23-26, a conference in<br />

Columbus, Ohio, where HTML also had an exhibition booth. Staff also attended and/or presented<br />

paper5 at the Conference on Transportation ‘Technologies, Department of Transportation (DO r)<br />

Volpe Center. Cambridge, Massachusetts, <strong>September</strong> 16-1 8, <strong>1997</strong>; the USAC’A Meeting in1<br />

Washington, <strong>September</strong> 23-24, <strong>1997</strong>; the <strong>National</strong> Conference on the Ad\ aiicement of Research in<br />

<strong>Oak</strong> <strong>Ridge</strong>. to mhich Arvid was invited, <strong>September</strong> 2 1-24- <strong>1997</strong>; the International Symposium on<br />

Ceramic Material for Engines in Japan, <strong>October</strong> 1907: and tlie Annual CCM in Dearborn,<br />

<strong>October</strong> 27-30, <strong>1997</strong>.<br />

2.2.4 HTML Written Up in Navy “Best Manufacturing Process” Document<br />

The HTML, and its program5 werc reviewed by the [J.S. Navy‘s Best Manufacturing Processcs<br />

Survey Team on November 5, <strong>1996</strong>. spending a full day in the facility hearing prcsentations and<br />

seeing the equipment. We were rewarded with the following ti’I’ML-related item being designated<br />
