Cal Knights Baseball hosted Orange 

County’s 1st Annual Baseball 

Conference on Monday, November 

14, 2011. The event was structured to 

provide young baseball players and 

their families with information on various 

baseball topics. The night began 

with an introduction by Mission Viejo 

Mayor, Dave Leckness, followed by 

Tom Calahan, Cal Knights Baseball’s 

first coach, who returned to speak 

proudly of his early involvement with 

the local non-profit baseball academy. 

With nearly 300 guests attending, 

most were prepared with notebook in 

hand to jot down key points from the 

Conference’s guests speakers. Local 

varsity high school baseball coaches, 

Jeremey Wooten of SJHHS, Rick 

Brail of THS, Chris Ashbach of MVHS, 

and Bob Zamora of CVHS, along with 

freshman coach Donn Johnson of 

MVHS, all spoke to the theme of the 

conference, “How to Make Your High 

School Baseball Team.” Additionally, 

the audience heard testimony on a 

wide range of topics, from how to 

prevent shoulder and elbow injuries, 

to the importance of performing well 

in school, and being a stand-up indi-

always the “big guy” who makes the

both discussed similar themes with 

the attending players and their families; 

it was hard work, perseverance, 

and team work that took the St. Louis 

Cardinals all the way to their World

and 4th in the McKinney Theatre. 

The chorale ensembles, under the 

direction of Dr. Scott Farthing, and 

the symphony orchestra, under 

the direction of Branden Muresan, 

come together for this very popular 

and festive holiday program 

of vocal and orchestral music for 

all ages to enjoy. These holiday 

festivities include a traditional 

wassail catered and served by 

the Saddleback College Culinary 

Arts program being between performances. 

Dates are Saturday, December 3rd 

at 2 & 5 pm and Sunday, December 

4th at 2 & 5 pm. Tickets are $20 general 

admission; $18 students/seniors

The Music Department has established 

a comprehensive program which 

is considered to be one of the finest in 

California: a complete lower-division 

curriculum for transferring music majors, 

numerous performance groups, 

private and group lessons, a full concert 

series with faculty and guest artists, and 

general music courses. The nationally 

recognized faculty is dedicated to per- 

formance and to teaching in all areas 

such as vocal, instrumental, jazz, guitar 

and piano. Other music classes include 

harmony, musicianship, composition, 

history and appreciation of western art 

music, rock, jazz and world.

WAYS TO AVOID ORAL CANCER 

Oral cancer is on the rise for the fi fth year in a 

row. In the US alone, 100 new individuals will be 

diagnosed with oral cancer daily and one person 

will die every hour of every day because of this disease. 

It used to be that oral cancer was attributable primarily to age and smoking. 

Now, there is evidence to the effect that it is being transmitted in young 

people thru sexual contact. 

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. Early detection, like 

everything else in the body, is the key. We use ViziLite, which is a chemoluminescent 

test for early visual detection, and a “Brush Biopsy” (from Oral 

CDx) when we see a suspicious discontinuity in intra-oral tissue. 

Oral Cancer has been a hot topic of discussion in the US over the last few 

months, especially since Michael Douglas has been so candid in the media 

over the last few months appearing on both Oprah and The View. He, like 

many oral cancer patients and survivors, is urging the public to get an annual 

oral cancer exam. The Great Dr. Oz even did a segment on it 

Lesions from the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is a sexually transmitted 

disease can also be discovered by visual dental examinations. There 

are more than 100 types of this virus, four of which are associated with oral 

cancers. HPV is the number one cause of throat and mouth cancer after 

tobacco use. In the United States, 1700 new cases of HPV-associated head 

and neck cancers are diagnosed in women and nearly 5700 in men each 

year. 

The dental community is the fi rst line of defense against oral cancer, because, 

along with checking teeth, we evaluate the health of the soft tissues 

of the mouth in their entirety.

Over 27,000 attended Tim McGraw’s Tour 

for the Troops concert at Camp Pendleton, 

November 13. “I am proud to perform for the 

troops and to celebrate our heroes, bringing 

attention to the need to improve the quality 

of life among men and women who serve our 

country,” said Tim McGraw, who is not only a 

GRAMMY® Award-winning musician, but also 

an honorary chairman of the Tug McGraw 

Foundation. The Tug McGraw foundation is 

focused on providing, “support and resources 

for people affected by brain tumors and brainrelated 

trauma…”. The Air Force Reserve, Tri- 

West Healthcare Alliance and Marine Corps 

Community Services sponsored the event, 

benefiting The Tug McGraw Foundation. 

Tour for the Troops is a program by the Air 

Force Reserve that “has brought top entertainers 

to all branches of the Military both domestically 

as well as overseas”. The program 

raises awareness of the Air Force Reserve 

as well as “the morale of the brave men and 

women who defend and serve our Nation”. 

Performers who have participated in the Air 

Force Reserve Tour for the Troops include 

Kid Rock, Styx, Ludacris, Blake Shelton, Jay 

Leno, and Martin Lawrence, just to name a 

few. Tour for the Troops shows are free to 

DOD ID cardholders and their dependents, 

but civilians are welcome and encouraged 

to attend.

$511,500 RAISED FOR HOMEAID OC 

The date 11-11.11 proved to be lucky numbers for HomeAid OC, a nonprofit 

organization benefiting homeless families in Southern California. The sold out 

20th Anniversary Celebration raised $511,500 for HomeAid OC. 

Since its debut two decades ago, Project Playhouse has captivated millions 

of visitors, raised a total of $6.3 million and enlisted more than 10,000 

volunteers. The result — 48 housing developments and 1,050 beds, providing 

4.2 million bed nights over the last 22 years and 386,535 bed nights in 2010 

serving victims of domestic violence, abused children and homeless families. 

With 450 guests attending, most bid on this year’s playhouses from Project 

Playhouse®, the signature annual fundraiser benefitting HomeAid OC. The 

2011 collection of fantasy playhouses, which had been open to the public to 

tour for over a month at the Irvine Spectrum Center, were built and donated 

by generous home builders, Nicholson Companies, Shea Homes, and William 

Lyon Homes. 

“It’s has been amazing to see how the Orange County community has 

come together for the last 20 years to inspire hope and build homes that can 

change the lives for the homeless ” said John Racunas, standing with his 

Project Playhouse Committee Co-Chair, Brandi Uehli. 

HomeAid OC board president Sonia Lister and board member Robert 

Grimm helped guide the tribute to General William Lyon for his 20 years of 

dedication to HomeAid OC, as a video highlighted the 20 playhouses he built 

for Project Playhouse. While he was center stage, he learned of a special 

gift delivered in his honor. One of the playhouses William Lyon Homes built 

in the past was donated back to HomeAid and gifted to Ryan, a 6 year old 

girl whose wish through Make-A-Wish Foundation was to have a playhouse. 

The family got up on stage to thank him for his generosity to HomeAid OC 

and to let him know that the joy and laughter they hear coming out of the 

playhouse is irreplaceable. 

“General William Lyon’s consistent commitment to HomeAid OC for the last 

20 years is nothing more than inspiring.” Gina Scott, HomeAid OC Director 

of Development. “Under his leadership, the team at William Lyon Homes has 

been side by side HomeAid building hope and changing lives for homeless 

families and individuals.” 

The Over the Rainbow Cottage playhouse team thanked the room as they 

accepted the People’s Choice award, which was voted favorite by the public. 

Guests also enjoyed the spirited live auction, fine dining, and silent auction, 

as well as danced until midnight to Super Diamond, the ever-popular Neil 

Diamond cover band. The winner was also announced for HomeAid’s Extreme 

Kitchen Makeover’s opportunity drawing, valued at $33,000, which includes 

KitchenAid Stainless Steel Appliances donated by Ferguson Bath, Kitchen 

and Lighting Gallery, Custom Cabinetry by Hartmark Cabinet Design and 

Manufacturing and Countertops by Famosa Tile and installation by Epic Stone. 

Live auction items were a highlight of the evening and included donations 

from the Anaheim Ducks, Black, Starr & Frost, Corum, and Ferrari/Masterai 

of Newport Beach, Pelican Hill and Sunseeker Yacht Group. 

HomeAid Orange County is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 by 

the Orange County Chapter of the Building Industry Association of Southern

The Roman Catholic Diocese of 

Orange, now ranked tenth in Catholic 

population in the nation, has been 

awarded the opportunity to purchase 

the Crystal Cathedral. The iconic 

Philip Johnson designed structure 

and its adjacent 30.9 acre campus 

and buildings located in Garden 

Grove, CA have been the subject 

of complicated bankruptcy proceedings 

brought by creditors and others 

against Crystal Cathedral Ministries. 

The decision announced today by 

U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert 

N. Kwan confirmed the selection of 

the Diocese by the Crystal Cathedral 

Ministries board of directors as the 

preferred buyer. The Crystal Cathedral 

Ministries Board determined the 

terms of the monetary and non-monetary 

Diocesan offer more acceptable 

to a competing proposal by Chapman 

University. 

While the court has validated the 

award, occupancy by the Diocese of 

the campus and use of the church will 

not be immediate. Under the terms 

of the agreement, Crystal Cathedral 

Ministries may continue to use the 

church and other campus structures 

for a period of up to three years. During 

the same period a diocesan pas- 



toral center will be established on the 

Garden Grove campus and nearby 

parish school and church eventually 

transferred to the new location. 

The initial decision to bid on the 

Crystal Cathedral Ministries property 

surfaced as an alternative to existing 

diocesan plans to design and build a 

new Catholic cathedral to serve the 

present and anticipated needs of the 

growing Diocese of Orange. 

Encouraged by a panel of lay advisors 

and other experts, the Diocese 

began the bid process with the intention 

of acquiring a suitable worship 

space and administrative campus 

for less overall cost than original 

construction would demand and be 

available over a shorter time period. 

Bishop Tod D. Brown also expressed 

his personal concern over 

the possibility of the Crystal Cathedral 

church being re-developed for 

other than worship use. Indeed, its 

continued use as a place of worship 

was prominent in the Crystal Cathedral 

Ministries’s decision to select the 

diocese as the preferred buyer. 

While critical design upgrades will 

be required before the church can be 

used as a Catholic Cathedral, today’s 

court award accomplishes the original

CATHOLIC DIOCESE ACQUIRES CRYSTAL CATHEDRAL 

diocesan goals, maintains the Crystal 

Cathedral itself as a place of worship, 

and underscores the vital relationship 

between the Catholic laity and clergy 

here in Orange County. 

“We sincerely regret the difficult 

circumstances Dr. Schuller and his 

ministry have encountered. Those 

challenges have now enabled the 

Diocese of Orange to protect this 

wonderful structure as a place of 

worship and will soon provide our 

Catholic community with a new cathedral, 

pastoral center, parish school 

and more. Despite these wonderful 

results, we are nonetheless sad- 

dened by the events that led us to 

today’s award and offer our respect 

to Dr. Schuller and his ministry,” said 

Bishop Tod D. Brown. 

As Bishop Brown has said many 

times during this process, the Diocese 

would not have been able to 

capably bid and then compete for this 

property without the invaluable counsel 

and contributions of many within 

its lay community. “Today’s wonderful 

news clearly validates that our church 

is of the people and the clergy – it is 

a shared joy that we have today. And 

I am grateful to have been a part of 

this effort,” Bishop Brown concluded.

Sure, you could go to the 

mall this Christmas season and 

just browse around, picking up 

random gifts for you friends and 

family. Or you could buy a bunch 

of generic gifts--like bath sets-that 

basically say to the recipient 

“Here, I got you...something. 

Because I felt like I should.” Or 

you can make Christmas shopping 

more fun, interesting and 

personalized this year. I think a 

mistake a lot of shoppers make 

is going to a store with no real 

ideas in mind, then trying to pick 

things out and forcing them to 

feel like a good idea. This kind 

of approach makes no sense 

to me. I mean, you spend your 

money on someone else, buying 

them something they don’t 

particularly want or need, while 

they spend their money on you, 

doing the same. It would make 

more sense, in this case, for 

both parties to simply keep their 

own money and use it to buy 

something they really like/want/ 

need. But tradition is tradition, 

and exchanging Christmas gifts 

is not going to change anytime 

soon. So you might as well make 

the most of it. 

Going to the mall and browsing 

around, picking up a random 

object that seems okay enough 

and trying to figure out who on 

your shopping list may want it 

is no way to go about Christmas 

shopping. In fact, that’s a 

surefire way to end up buying a 

bunch of generic, non-customized 

presents that people will 

politely accept and then banish 

to storage. Instead, personalize 

your Christmas shopping this 

year to make it more effective 

and efficient. Start by writing a 

list of all the people you want/ 

need to buy presents for (prioritizing 

it by putting the key 

people in your life at the top, 

and the people you just kind of 

feel obligated--like coworkers, 

for instance--to buy for). Then 

begin trying to figure out ideas 

for each person, writing all of 

them down as they come to you. 

You don’t need to be too spe-

comes to you. However, while

The trick for people like this is 

to come up with something that 

they wouldn’t think to get themselves, 

for whatever reason. 

You have to be a bit creative. 

That’s why you can’t just go to 

Target and buy __________ (fill 

in the blank here), because they 

would’ve already gotten it, probably, 

had they wanted it. That’s 

why you need to think outside 

the box. Is there something you 

think they’d like but aren’t aware 

of that you could introduce them 

to? Is there something they may 

have wanted but felt it was too 

indulgent for them to buy for 

themselves? Is there something 

that never would’ve occurred to 

them to buy? Is there a way you 

could personalize/customize 

something to make it special? Is 

there something homemade that 

they would really appreciate? 

These are some of the questions 

you can ask yourself when coming 

up with ideas. 

If you have trouble coming up 

with ideas for certain people, 

call the people they’re closest 

to and ask for suggestions. You 

might not know for sure what to 

get your niece but maybe her 

mom or boyfriend has some 

good ideas. Barring that, think 

carefully about how the person 

responded to past presents. 

Everyone is always polite when 

receiving presents, of course, 

but you can usually tell what a 

person is really excited about, 

present-wise. So try to think 

back to what gifts went over 

well in previous years, and see 

if you can glean some ideas from 

that. Another tricky way to get 

ideas is to go on the person’s 

Myspace (www.myspace.com) 

or Facebook (www.facebook. 

com) profile (assuming he/she 

has one) and look around. There 

are usually sections there where 

people write about their likes, 

interests, and tastes in music, 

movies, books, etc. Facebook 

also has “fan pages” that a person 

can join when he/she is a fan 

of something specific, so that’s 

another great place to look. 

Once you’ve gotten your ideas 

written down you can begin 

shopping. I recommend starting 

with the internet, as you have 

an almost unlimited selection 

online for all kinds of things. It 

can also be *a lot* less stressful 

and therefore more fun. You can 

forget about traffic and crowds 

and lines, sit in your pajamas, 

drink hot chocolate, listen to 

music of your choice (that way, 

you won’t be forced to listen to 

Christmas music), and relax. 

Sure, you’ll have to pay for shipping 

but hey, you’d have had to 

pay for gas if you went out anyway. 

Then again, there’s nothing 

wrong with shopping the classic 

way if that’s what you prefer. The 

point is to start looking around 

with the help of your idea list. 

That should make Christmas 

shopping a lot easier and more 

fun. But then, there are always 

those people who are almost 

impossible to shop for. Either 

they have everything they need, 

or you don’t know enough about 

them and have no real way of 

finding out more, or they’re 

incredibly picky, or...whatever. 

The point is, when it comes to 

those extra-difficult-to-shop-for 

people, I think the best way to go 

is a general gift certificate. I’ve 

never known anyone not to appreciate 

a gift certificate. Plus, 

I think they can be a better gift 

than just money, as when I get 

money I often end up spending 

it on boring things like bills but 

gift certificates give me a reason 

to buy myself something cool. Of 

course, there’s still the question 

of where to get the gift certificate 

for in that instance, which is why 

you should go with somewhere 

general with a wide selection/ 

variation of stuff. Not to rely 

too heavily on the internet, but 

Amazon.com, for example, has 

such a wide variety of stuff that 

it would be almost impossible for 

someone not to find something 

they like there. 

So yeah. Go through your list, 

getting ideas from it or using it 

more specifically, find what you 

can, and get gift certificates for 

those you just can’t find something 

for. Enjoy your shopping 

this year. Hopefully these suggestions 

will help make your 

shopping more effective and 

your recipients happier.

and her terminal cancer condition to his friends: 

We have all faced di� culties in life. Losing a child is certainly the most 

di� cult thing any parent has to face. My daughter, Dominique is paralyzed 

from the waist down with advanced metastasized breast cancer 

that has spread to her spinal cord. � e doctors gave her 60 days to live in 

June. She does not agree with that prognosis, obviously, since it is now 

mid-November. She remains totally positive minded even knowing the 

eventual outcome of her condition. 

Her primary concern in life is to take care of her two teenage children (my grandchildren, needless 

to say). My former wife, Jennifer (Dominique’s stepmother), has created a beautiful blog about my 

daughter. � ey have been very close most of her life. Please take a moment to read it. If you are 

able to help her in any small way, she will be more appreciative than words can express here.
