David Lehman<br />

Longtime<br />

<strong>for</strong>mer resident<br />

David Russell<br />

Lehman, Sr., 86,<br />

died in Cali<strong>for</strong>nia<br />

on December<br />

6, 2012, just be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

his birthday<br />

which would have been December<br />

12, 2012.<br />

Mr. Lehman was born in<br />

Washington, D.C. He served<br />

honorably in the Navy in World<br />

War II from 1943 to 1945. His<br />

duties included escorting transport<br />

convoys in the North Atlantic and<br />

Naval support in the Mediterranean<br />

during the Italian Campaign.<br />

A SeaBee engineer, he aided in<br />

construction <strong>of</strong> an airstrip after<br />

the Battle <strong>of</strong> Okinawa and was<br />

assigned to the APD Ringness in<br />

Tsingtao, China, <strong>for</strong> final invasion<br />

<strong>of</strong> Japan. He followed in his<br />

father’s footsteps, working as a<br />

motion picture operator in various<br />

Maryland and D.C. theaters.<br />

In 1950 he married his bride<br />

<strong>of</strong> over 62 years, Betty Louise<br />

Rush. They moved to Greenbelt<br />

in 1953.<br />

The Lehmans raised two sons,<br />

David, Jr., <strong>of</strong> Eureka, Ca., and<br />

James R. <strong>of</strong> Colorado Springs,<br />

Co.<br />

Mr. Lehman entered the electronics<br />

field in the early 1950s,<br />

ultimately having a career with<br />

NASA at Goddard Space Flight<br />

Center as an unmanned satellite<br />

procurement <strong>of</strong>ficer. He retired<br />

in 1995 and in retirement enjoyed<br />

guitar playing, woodworking and<br />

travel.<br />

He and his wife relocated to<br />

Eureka, Ca., in October 2011.<br />

Mr. Lehman is survived by his<br />

wife, two sons and his daughterin-law.<br />

Gloria D. West<br />

Gloria Dean West, 80, <strong>of</strong><br />

Ridge Road died peacefully on<br />

Thursday, December 13, 2012,<br />

in Winder, Ga. at the home <strong>of</strong><br />

her son.<br />

She was born on January 2,<br />

1932, to Paul and Bessie Wise in<br />

Chance<strong>for</strong>d, Pa.<br />

Mrs. West was a member <strong>of</strong><br />

the Church <strong>of</strong> Christ. She was<br />

an avid reader with a passion<br />

<strong>for</strong> learning. She loved classical<br />

music, her dogs and most <strong>of</strong><br />

all, her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.<br />

She worked <strong>for</strong><br />

many years as a bookkeeper <strong>for</strong><br />

the University <strong>of</strong> Maryland Book<br />

Exchange until two years be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

her death, which allowed her to<br />

be around books, a dream job<br />

<strong>for</strong> her.<br />

She was predeceased by a<br />

son, Roger West, and a daughter,<br />

Eileen West, and three siblings:<br />

Paul Wise, Viola (Wise) Boyd<br />

and Allen Wise.<br />

Her survivors include brothers<br />

Clair Wise and George “Butch”<br />

Newcomber, a sister, Patricia<br />

Snelbaker; six children, Claudia<br />

(West) Guthrie (Dansville, N.Y.),<br />

Clay West (Winder, Ga.), Shari<br />

(West) Forbes (Laurel, Md.),<br />

Eric West (Winder, Ga.), Dean<br />

West (Greenbelt) and Tanya West<br />

(Ca.); 16 grandchildren and 17<br />

great-grandchildren.<br />

Mrs. West will be interred in<br />

York County, Pa.<br />

New Exhibit<br />

A free concert at 6:30 p.m. on<br />

Sunday, December 23 at the National<br />

Gallery <strong>of</strong> Art will feature<br />

Jennifer Lane, soprano, and Kenneth<br />

Slowik, <strong>for</strong>te pianist. Music<br />

from the era <strong>of</strong> the <strong>for</strong>tepiano will<br />

be per<strong>for</strong>med in honor <strong>of</strong> Masterpieces<br />

<strong>of</strong> American Furniture from<br />

the Kaufman Collection, 1700 –<br />

1830. This concert will take place<br />

in the West Garden Court.<br />

National Wildlife Center<br />

Hosts December Artist<br />

In December the Patuxent<br />

National Visitor Center in Laurel<br />

receives a real holiday gift. The<br />

founder <strong>of</strong> Bohemian Photoworks<br />

<strong>of</strong> Rockville will <strong>of</strong>fer visitors<br />

his “first major nature exhibit.”<br />

Joseph Giitter is a certified pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

photographer who has<br />

been awarded numerous honors<br />

locally and regionally. He has<br />

also published several books<br />

and is preparing one that documents<br />

the vanishing islands <strong>of</strong><br />

the Chesapeake. Giitter writes<br />

that his work reflects his training<br />

and experience in engineering<br />

and in the use <strong>of</strong> varying camera<br />

<strong>for</strong>mats. He cites Walker Evans,<br />

Dorothea Lange and Wright Morris<br />

as influences on his work.<br />

Carol Service Sunday<br />
