New Mexico Tech reports
record-setting enrollment
According to a press release
from New Mexico Tech, the university
once again has a record-setting
student population this year,
with 2,100 students enrolled. Last
year’s official total was 2.005.
Mike Kloeppel, Director of the
Admission Office, said he and his
staff haven’t made drastic changes
to their recruiting methods. They
have made minor changes and
focused on consistency. Recruiters
have taken to using email more
often and Tech has developed
online registration.
“Overall, everyone is just doing
their job,” he said. “We could get
eight students from Seattle this
year and next year we may get just
one. There’s no real rhyme or reason
for why more students are
coming here geographically.”
Tech has growing enrollment
from all main areas: Albuquerque
metro, the rest of New Mexico and
out-of-state students, Kloeppel
said.
Tech has 483 new students,
including 373 freshmen and 110
transfers. The total undergraduate
population is 1,676. Tech has 485
graduate students, including 90
new grad students. Last year, the
number of new undergraduate students
was a then-record 416. This
year marks a 16.6 percent increase
from last year.
The figures are unofficial, as of
Tuesday, August 28. The official
fall enrollment will be set on “census
day,” which is Friday, Sept. 7.
The undergraduate population
has grown 11.4 percent from last
fall.
Melissa Jaramillo-Fleming,
Vice President of Student and
University Relations, said Tech is
enjoying a nationwide trend of
more students opting for studies in
engineering, science and technology.
VILLAGE: Street light approved
continued from front page
to work with the Ag programs” he
said. “It helps with the operation
and maintenance of the program.”
Trustee Diane Allen asked
Dean what 4-H is now doing with
Magdalena youth.
“Magdalena is not very active
at this point,” Dean said. “Jason
and Valerie Henderson are the volunteer
Yucca 4-H leaders for the
Magdalena area. I believe there
are 16 kids, aged five to 19, that
could be involved in the local program.”
He said he would meet with the
Henderson family and with the
Ag teacher at the school to help
get things going.
In other business:
The Board approved three
ordinances relating to controlled
substances. Broaddus said the
ordinances were specifically aimed
at marijuana use. The vote came
after a scheduled second public
hearing. The first ordinance was
for possession of more than one
ounce of marijuana. The second
ordinance prohibited the possession,
delivery and manufacturing
of drug paraphernalia, and the
third ordinance was to collect additional
court fees of $75 to pay for
the cost of chemical analysis of evidence.
•The Board approved a land
split on a parcel north of
Magdalena near the water tanks.
Broaddus said the 35 acre parcel
would be split into two seventeen
and a half acre parcels.
•Mayor Sandy Julian reported
that the large lagoon has been
repaired, and that the Village has
received approval from the New
Mexico Environmental
Department before putting it
online with the three other lagoons.
•Resident Toby Jaramillo
made a request for a street light
and sewer connection on Tenth
Street. Clerk Rita Broaddus confirmed
there are no sewer lines on
that side in that part of town. “It
would require a lift station which is
very expensive,” she said. “If it is
requested on the ICIP it may be
four or five years down the road.”
The board did approve looking
into a possible new street light on
Tenth, the installation of which
would be coordinated with
Socorro Electric Co-op.
parcels, 38 have paid, but there
are still 143 that haven’t.”
She said the total uncollected
property tax amounts to
$164,979.18.
“This is the money that is owed
the county,” Baca said.
She said a letter sent to taxpayers
from the Property Tax Division
states that no delinquent payments
are to be made until the property
owners contact their office.
“However, I have several calls
on my voice mail stating that the
state is not responding or returning
calls,” Baca said. “One person
has left thirteen messages and is
still waiting for a response.”
“Don’t take a chance on losing
your property at a tax auction,”
Baca said. “The first auctions are
not supposed to take place until
the third week of October. We
want these people to contact us to
see what we can do. If there is
some kind of a problem we check
with the assessor’s office to make
sure everything is correct.”
They must pay their property
tax off in full through 2011 on or
before September 30, Baca said.
In other County Commission
action:
During the public comments
section, Magdalena resident Bill
Fuller protested that the meeting in
Magdalena was not properly
announced, according to the Open
Meetings Act. He said a notice of
the 6 p.m. meeting in Magdalena
was posted at the post office that
morning, but did not state where
the meeting was to be held. He
said he would be filing a formal
complaint with the Attorney
General’s office if another meeting
in Magdalena was not scheduled
within the next 30 days and properly
announced.
Commissioner Danny Monette
said he understood Fuller’s concerns,
and that the Board would
schedule another meeting in
Magdalena on September 25 at 6
p.m. in the Senior Center.
