We Can’t Do It Alone
The Miami-Dade County Health Department has huge responsibilities.
Our 900 employees deliver a myriad of services to the
county’s 2.4 million residents. But even with all of our untiring
efforts, we realize we cannot do it alone.
The Health Department has long recognized the importance
of partnerships and volunteerism. The lasting relationships we
enjoy in the community with individuals and all types of private and public groups
are key to attaining our goals.
Our partners include organizations that provide a safety net of care and health
education for the estimated 500,000 uninsured and underserved residents of
Miami-Dade County. They also include individual volunteers spanning the health
care spectrum who generously and compassionately choose to make a difference
in our community.
Their numbers are truly impressive. More than 1,470 volunteers support our
department and the free clinics in the community, providing care to over 57,000
uninsured and underserved men, women and children last year. The value of their
donated services exceeded $29 million. These statistics only scratch at the surface
because they do not include the immense contributions made by our many other
community partners and their staffs.
The partner organizations and volunteers not only give the gift of good health,
but in so doing they reduce the number and frequency of expensive emergency
room visits. Thus, they play a key role in controlling health care costs and minimizing
the tax burden shared by all of us.
This publication recognizes only a modest selection of the many organizations
and volunteer efforts that enhance the quality and delivery of health care services
in our community. Our partners and individual volunteers present daily evidence
of the power of possibilities, hope and commitment. Because of their success in
transforming and improving the lives of those less fortunate, we are truly grateful
for their contributions.

n The Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade
consists of organizations brought together to
act as a catalyst for healthy living. It was established
in 2003 to counter increasing chronic
disease rates.
n The Good Health Clinic provides upper Keys uninsured,
low-income residents
free medical care,
supplemented by free
care at Mariners Hospital.
It is located at mile marker
91.5 in Tavernier.
n Partners with our Special Supplemental Nutrition
Program for Women, Infants and Children
(WIC) provide free or reduced cost
clinic space to serve their clients and the
surrounding community. These agencies’ generosity
frees up WIC funds for additional outreach.
n American Dental Association members provide free
dental care through its “give Kids a Smile” program.
Recently, they and other volunteers treated
over 55 foster care children in collaboration with
the University of South Florida/Hialeah Dental
Clinic staff and many other organizations.
n Organizations concerned with women’s health have
teamed with our Women’s Health and Preventive
Services Program to deliver breast and cervical
cancer screenings, primary care, health screenings
and conduct health fairs.
n Since 1984, the Brothers of the Good Shepherd, under
the auspices of the Catholic Church, has
operated Camillus Health Concern as a source
of primary health services for homeless men,
women and children as an adjunct of its Camillus
House humanitarian mission.
n The City of North Miami works in partnership with
our Little Haiti clinic to increase community awareness
about available health screenings services.
n The Good News Care Center, on the grounds of
First Baptist Church of Florida City provides uninsured,
low-income residents with free primary
medical care, screenings, diagnostic services and

specialty care. Baptist Health
South Florida provides free
hospitalization and outpatient
services while many health care
specialists volunteer their time.
n Florida International University interns serve in our
environmental Health Division, interacting with
clients during their rotation period.
n Local volunteer dentists
treat low-income residents
through the Community
Smiles program,
in existence since 1946.
n Volunteer agencies work
to help new refugee arrivals
to the this country

Health Program, provides grant funding that expanded
health services from 14 to 34 schools.
The Children’s Trust also operates Health Connect
on Wheels, a mobile unit that visits our West
Perrine Clinic monthly to help pregnant women
and parents apply to programs for which they
or their children may be eligible such as Medicaid

who need additional tests and treatment get them

n Touching Miami with Love volunteers have provided
social services, counseling, pediatric care and
more in the downtown Miami and Overtown areas
as part of their ministries since 1994.
n The University of Miami Department of Community
Service Student Program, in partnership with the St.
John Bosco Clinic, provides free medical care to
the working poor every Tuesday night.
n The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine,
partnering with our School Health Program, provides
health services in a local high school andmiddle
school.
n The Urban Mercy Clinic delivers free medical ser-
vices to the underserved population in the North
Miami region.
n The newly renovated Father Patrick H. O’Neill Medical
and Legal Services Center at St. Ann’s Mission
in Naranja is destined to provide migrants with
medical and legal support. The center is sponsored
by the Order of Malta South Florida, Inc.
n The Universal Heritage Institute Medical Center
is a free primary care clinic serving uninsured
and indigent residents of Miami-Dade County.
The universal Heritage Institute, Inc., a Muslim
community outreach organization, sponsors the
clinic and is supported by the volunteer efforts of
South Florida Muslims.
n Lotus House is a transitional housing facility
for homeless women in the heart of Overtown.
The center provides
free housing with comprehensive
support and medical
services to fifty women and
sixteen infants at a time.
