ASSISTING PEOPLE WITH BARRIERS
TO EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT AND
INDEPENDENCE IN ACHIEVING THEIR GOALS.
Goodwill ■
Easter Seals
DEAR FRIENDS
The past year proved nothing short of a landmark for Goodwill ■ Easter Seals. The culmination of over a decade of
thoughtful planning, community collaboration and wise resource management brought our dream of a new statewide
headquarters and metro service location to reality. Our new facility is a tool which will help us provide more high
quality services for our participants now and in the future. Thank you to our many community contributors and
partners that support our mission.
The impact we make on people’s lives will always take center stage. In 2002, more than 600 Goodwill ■ Easter Seals
participants with multiple barriers to work obtained jobs. An additional 500 people were promoted through our
career advancement services. These numbers are astounding. But when you realize the ripple effect a good job makes
on a family and its community, the exponential impact spurred by our services becomes epic.
Our Goodwill retail stores generated nearly $17 million last year, helping fund our programs and services. We can
attribute much of our success to our talented work force and enhanced operational efficiency. As always, our stores
are both revenue generators and training centers for participants. The duality of their functions speaks to the
productive ingenuity rooted in our organization.
Goodwill ■ Easter Seals still holds firm to the principles and ideals of its founders, Reverend Dr. Edgar J. Helms
(Goodwill Industries International) and Edgar Allen (Easter Seals National). Last year, both men were inducted into
Washington DC’s Extra Mile Pathway through the Points of Light Foundation. They are now recognized amidst
Martin Luther King and other revered social champions of American history. The fact that this honor took place in
2002, the 100th anniversary of Goodwill Industries International, makes it a particularly fitting tribute.
Jackie Burgeson was honored with the Goodwill Industries International (GII) Elsine Katz Leadership Award for
more than 40 years of local service to Goodwill ■ Easter Seals. For their fundraising efforts, our Goodwill Industries
Volunteer Services (GIVS) group was named the National Volunteer Group of the Year, also by GII. These awards
give us cause to remember that volunteers really are at the heart of our organization.
Our challenge now is to go beyond the jobs, helping our participants rise above poverty, advance in their careers and
enhance their personal wealth. In light of our country’s current economic climate, partnerships with state government,
corporations and nonprofits will be the key to providing targeted services that effectively serve the population.
As you read ahead to the stories of people who have seen dramatic transformations in their family lives, careers and
abilities, it confirms why we are in the business of bringing training and employment opportunities to people with
disabilities and other barriers. This is truly life-changing work.
gaining courage
“I saw that Goodwill ■ Easter Seals was more about the people than the business. I liked that.”
Shannon Sizer will tell you that with mental illness, some days are good
and some are bad. But that wasn’t always the case.
Growing up in Clearwater, Minnesota, Shannon was like any typical teenager.
She attended St. Cloud Technical High School and spent her spare time with friends.
“We liked to hang out together — anywhere,” she said. Shannon enjoyed her business
classes, and dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur. She worked hard, holding
a full-time job at McStop for four years.
After graduating in 1994, Shannon enrolled in Georgia’s Carroll Tech. She majored in
childcare, and quickly grew to love the warmer southern climate. Life was good, and
she had a boyfriend. They dated for two and a half years, planning to marry someday.
But things changed and Shannon ended the relationship. “Breaking up with him was
traumatic for me,” recalled Shannon. “I became very depressed.”
After moving back to Minnesota, a friend of Shannon’s encouraged her to talk with
Goodwill ■ Easter Seals. Soon after, Shannon began working at the St. Cloud Goodwill store.
“I was happy to be there,” said Shannon. “The staff respected a lot of individuals with very
different needs. They were more about the people than the business. I liked that.”
Shannon enjoyed the retail setting, and soon began the Retail Skills Training Program
at Target. As a sales associate, Shannon learned to stock merchandise, cashier, and
work in customer service. She most enjoyed the customer interaction. After completing
the 10-week program, Shannon’s support consultant arranged an interview for
her at Cashwise in Waite Park. She was immediately offered the job, and
has been cashiering there for the past nine months.
Shannon now receives weekly follow-up services to make sure things are going well.
She is appreciative of the help. “Goodwill ■ Easter Seals gave me courage when
I found out I had a mental illness, and helped me realize I could still work,”
said Shannon. “They supported me.”
Shannon’s success at work has not gone unnoticed. Her supervisor
describes Shannon as serious, dependable and positive. “I have fewer bad
days now,” said Shannon. “I also have some tools to help me manage. Taking
deep breaths, getting enough rest, and talking with my mom and dad helps
a lot. My family’s been great to me, and I’m doing well.”
“Good families support each other and create good communities.”
When Tin Aung came to Minnesota in the winter of 2001, the snow and frigid
temperatures stunned him. Tin was a reporter and illustrator by trade, a man intent
on moving his family from Southeast Asia to a new life in the United States.
Nonetheless, the climate was a force to reckon with, and the language barrier proved
a tremendous frustration to the Rangoon University psychology graduate.
In the early 1970s, a political revolution within Burma took the country by storm, forcing
families to flee. Tin, his wife and children found refuge in the jungle, forming small,
makeshift villages with other families from their ethnic group. Using simple hand tools,
Tin built a house for his family. They lived there for 14 years, until they were again
uprooted to a refugee camp in neighboring Thailand. There, Tin and his wife studied
the Bible with Australian missionaries, and Tin became an ordained pastor. By hand,
he built a church. But opposing religious militants killed church leaders, and the
family escaped to Bangkok. While waiting for refugee status, Tin and his wife
established another church, one that still thrives today.
After three years, Tin, his wife and four children were sent to Minnesota. They lived in a
church basement, and Tin and his wife began as participants at Goodwill ■ Easter Seals.
“I wanted to study everything…all the basics, plus new skills,” said Tin. He began in the
commercial products department, quickly proving to be a positive, focused learner. His
attendance was strong, and his language skills improved through English classes.
Tin’s natural interest in building attracted him to the Construction Skills Training
program. He became a motivated student, working hard to learn professional
carpentry skills. “Building and renovating is much easier here. Power tools,
materials — it’s all waiting for you at Menards,” smiled Tin.
Obtaining a driver’s license, however, was not as easy for Tin. So Goodwill ■ Easter Seals
funded hours of behind the wheel training for him. After multiple tests, Tin finally
earned his license, and a sense of pride in his accomplishment.
Tin is now employed as a maintenance helper at the Salvation Army. He is happy
with his job and new life. “Everybody needs to work,” said Tin. “I want to set
an example for my family. Good families support each other and create good
communities. And that creates a good nation.”
sharing discoveries
“We were new people in a new land. Goodwill ■ Easter Seals helped us and our family.”
United with her husband, Tin Aung (featured on page 5), in their amazing journey
around the world, Connie Zan is a woman of enduring strength and resource.
Her ability to care for her family, while nurturing her community, is a gift she has
shared in Southeast Asia, and now, the United States.
Connie’s father was a leader of the political revolution that eventually drove her
family to hide in the jungles of Burma. A math and chemistry major from Rangoon
Institute of Education, Connie first established math classes, then a school, for
the refugee children living in the jungle.
While life as a refugee in Burma was not easy, moving to the refugee camp in
Thailand was no better. Connie had four children to care for, one with Down’s Syndrome,
yet she still remained committed to helping the fellow members of her Karen ethnic group.
She began the Karen Solidarity Organization to raise money for families in need. Connie
was also an integral part of the Pentecostal church she and her husband began, delivering
food to families, caring for the sick and teaching Sunday school. In 1998, the Thai government
recognized her extraordinary contributions by awarding Connie, “Mother of the Year.”
When Connie and her family arrived in Minnesota in 2001, they were relieved to
be safe and excited about their future. Connie began working at Goodwill ■ Easter Seals
as a materials processor. Despite culture shock and ceaseless efforts to help her
children assimilate into their schools, Connie had almost perfect attendance, and
tried to learn everything she could about American life and workplace skills.
She attended English language classes and was a dedicated student.
Soon Connie discovered an interest in computers. Through a partnership with
Millennium Technical Institute, Goodwill ■ Easter Seals helped Connie attend computer
courses. She persevered through two-hour bus rides and late nights studying to
pass the course. Today, Connie holds a full-time job as a laboratory technician at
Synovis Surgical Innovations. “I’m very happy to learn so many technical
things…continually learning is important to me.”
Reaching out to give fellow refugees a fresh start is also important to Connie. Instrumental
in the creation of the Minnesota American Karen Society, Connie and Tin help new
refugees find housing and other necessities. “We have a responsibility to support our
community,” said Connie. “We like to be good citizens.”
