FISHTALES by Catfish
If you don't leave...how will I
know how much I miss you?
Well, I tell ya, we all missed
the Langley Good-Times
Cruise-In last year.
After a one year hiatus (2010)
Western Canada's Largest
Car show returned in 2011 on
September 10th, the usual
Saturday following Labour
Day, with a Bang!
The volunteer Directors took last year off, stepping back to
re-evaluate the direction of the show, amongst other issues.
They, along with their committee members and group of
volunteers, put in a lot of unpaid man hours, and it showed
by the way they pulled it off.
The crowds of close to 100,000 upon downtown Langley
City was an awesome sight to see again, as God kissed this
years event with perfect clear blue skies and one of the
hottest days we experienced this delayed summer. The
Friday night prior had it share of people who instead of just
cruisin' the strip, felt the urge to light up their tires. The Police
presence was very visible and had situations under control,
by warning, fining and towing vehicles. It was some of these
non-sanctioned activities that put the show in jeopardy, as
many outsiders associated it with the Cruise-In.
The Mopac Performance Friday Night Street Legals were on
as well at Mission Raceway Park, where you could get your
fix of smoky burnouts till dusk, in a safe organized environment.
The following Sunday if you didn't quite get your fill,
there was a Cruise-In Swap Meet at Kwantlen College,
where the vendors and lookiloos both talked about how
good the sales and bargains to be had were.
The Langley Speedway Historical Society also had their
Annual Day down at the Old Track at the foot of 208th Street,
where memorabilia and cars from the past lined the cleaned
up oval blacktop to reminisce about yesteryear.
I applaud the Cruise-In President Riccardo Sestito and his
crew who made the City of Langley, The Place To Be,
Proud again.
P.S. Steve Elliot as "Elvis" rocked the crowd... of all ages!
Soft Spot For Drop-Top by Fred Nelson
There are various reasons for wanting a particular
year or model of car.
When Dale Monahan met his wife in
Abbotsford (1979), he was driving his first car,
a 1969 Chev Impala. His future wife Deborah
was driving her first car too - a 1969 Chev Bel-
Air. They had eight doors, between them.
But, it was a great ice-breaker.
When they married in 1981, Deborah sold her
Bel-Air to pay for part of the wedding.
In 1990, the couple moved to Kamloops.
Dale was driving a grey '69 Caprice and
Deborah was driving a blue '69 Caprice.
This time, they only had four doors between
them. That was better, for sure, but they
thought it would be nice if they could ever find
a '69 Convertible. Their dream was realized
recently when Dale ran across this Canadianbuilt,
rural BC car that had never been
exposed to salt.
Now living in Calgary, and many years after
almost forgetting the dream, Dale began the
restoration and rebuild.
We know the car was a Canadian-built model
because it has the 327-V8. The 1969 327-V8
was special, used for one year only.
The engine was freshened, and all the
mechanical systems were redone, one at a
time.
All the body panels were massaged to perfection,
then painted separately. The color picked
was Viper Red, and it was a good choice.
A new pearl white interior was installed, along
with extra Dynamat. Dale was able to use up
some of the accessories he had been hoarding
since 1982.
Page 06
The bright red convertible features tilt steering,
wood three-spoke wheel, and optional 8track
sitting under the ashtray. The hide-away
headlights are a nice touch, and rarely seen
on an Impala. The rebuild would take 30
months, with Dale doing all the mechanical
and bodywork.
One particularly nice touch was the notching
of the rear pan for the larger-than-stock dual
exhaust pipes. These came out just behind
the rear wheel in the factory version, but it
looks much better with Dale's improved version.
The couple has now moved back to Kamloops
and are spending their time pampering their
long-awaited rag top. Even complex problems
can have a simple answer.
This month,
let’s look at
the front of the car.
When considering the chassis’ structure, most racers
focus on the main-hoop cross-member area where
the ladder bar and four-link brackets are positioned.
That’s a good thing because there are, literally, tons
of loads occurring there. Yet that doesn’t give us any
justification to ignore other areas where the chassis is
placed under a great amount of stress. Such a neglected
area is often the firewall region of the car.
Keep in mind that the firewall plays many roles
in the dynamics of a launching doorslammer.
First and foremost, it must deal with the torque
from the engine block and resist the roll-rotation
the torque causes. Then once the wheelstand
does occur, it’s the firewall region, along with
the front subframe, that has to lift the front tires
off the ground, along with the mass of the
engine. That’s a mean feat.
Why would anybody spend the money for
adjustable front shocks and not have a strong
firewall? The car won’t respond to shock
changes and will be less-responsive to front
travel changes if the car is permitted to flex in
this area. Look around the pits and you’ll see
examples of where savvy car builders have
made the firewall as stout as a tank. You’ll also
see sorry examples where the firewall has been
mauled by torque.
Cars with the stock firewall will often experience
cracks in the factory welds for accessory panels
on the firewall, along with the area where the
body bushings are connected to the unibody
structure. If I were to rate the stiffness of the
three makes of cars, I’d call the Fords as the
stiffest (except for Mustangs). Most chassis
builders will confirm that they use a lot more
saws-all blades cutting up a Ford versus the
other two makes. The GM cars are next with the
67-69 Camaros and Novas, along with the Turbo
Buicks being flimsy exceptions because they
are about as torque-resistant as the Chryslers,
which I would place a distant third. AMC’s are
an even-more distant fourth (and I’m a Rambler guy.)
Dave Morgan’s PIT BIT’s
Page 07
OCTOBER 2011
Have any of you tube-frame racers ever noticed
that the car will not launch straight, but drives
"straight-as-a-string" at the top end? What’s up
with that? If the suspension was out of alignment,
it would neither launch straight nor drive
straight. Check the rivets on the driver’s-side of
the firewall. Chances are they show signs of
tearing and burnishing, yet the rivets on the
passenger-side of the car look fine.
This is evidence of firewall flex and it normally
appears on the driver’s side.
Some cats think the entire job of the front end is
to simply keep the oil pan from dragging on the
ground. If the car behaves erratically, they won’t
even think about bumpsteer (toe-change during
vertical wheel movement in the frontend) or
consider the problem as a simply-bad alignment
job on the front tires.
Consider this; when you preload the right-rear
tire, you also add load to the left-front tire and
many drag racers don’t know this. Their cornerturning
brethren will confirm the fact. So imagine
the surprise a driver has when he, or she,
has to hit the brakes hard during an evasive
moment. During that one instant when they pray
for the car to stop in a straight line, guess what
it won’t do? With the left-front tire more heavily
loaded than the right-front, the car will pull left.
Oops!
Another aspect is to forget about what happens
after a wheelstand ends. Got inconsistent 60foot
times? Watch the rear slicks and see if they
begin to spin after the front tires return to the
ground. If the car is over-sprung in the front, or
the front suspension has some bind, the rear
slicks will spin when the wheelstand ends as the
front tires return to earth.
In closing, I’d like to remind readers that PitBits
is a reference tool for you.
INDY RESULTS
Antron Brown, Mike Neff, Greg Anderson and Hector Arana
Jr. were also winners in their respective categories at the final
race of the regular season before the start of the NHRA
Countdown to the Championship, the six-race playoffs to
determine the world championships.
Brown became the first driver to win the historic event in both
Top Fuel and Pro Stock Motorcycle when he powered his
Matco Tools dragster to a 3.813-second run at 321.73 mph.
The final round performance was enough to get past Del
Worsham and secure his fifth win of the season and 30th of his career.
"Words cannot describe how this feels," said Brown. "To
come here and win at Indy, the biggest stage in drag racing,
means so much. It just goes back to my childhood dream
and sitting under those grandstands as a kid and saying 'I
want to do that one day.' It's the greatest feeling I've ever had."
With the final regular season race complete, the Top Fuel field
is set for the NHRA Countdown to the Championship.
Worsham secured his No. 1 spot in the point standings during
qualifying, while Kalitta Racing driver David Grubnic
locked down the 10th and final spot after both Terry McMillen
and Bob Vandergriff lost in the second round.
In Funny Car, Mike Neff drove his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang
past Bob Tasca to secure his first Mac Tools U.S. Nationals
win. Neff posted a run of 4.068 at 314.61 in the final round to
take his fifth win of the season and sixth of his career. It was
also John Force Racing's fifth Mac Tools U.S. Nationals win in
the past six seasons. "This is the big one, the one you dream
about," said Neff. "It's huge to win here. I've never won here
as a driver or a crew chief so to be able to do it here as both
was great. It probably hasn't even sunk in yet."
Neff secured his top spot in the Funny Car standings for the
Countdown to the Championship during qualifying, while runner-up
Tasca clinched the 10th and final spot after Johnny
Gray lost in the first round to Daniel Wilkerson.
Pro Stock points leader Anderson continued his domination at
Lucas Oil Raceway when he held off teammate Jason Line
to earn his sixth Mac Tools U.S. Nationals win. Anderson and
his Summit Racing Pontiac GXP posted a final-round run of
6.552 at 210.50 to get his fifth win of the season and 70th of
his career. It was also his fourth win in the past six races.
I feel like it's my first and biggest win ever," said Anderson.
"Every time it happens up here it's just special; it's just magic.
Page 08
I love this place. I think some of the other racers might miss
out on how important it is and what it means to race here.
There's so much history here. It's just everything about drag racing."
While Anderson locked up his No. 1 spot in the Countdown to
the Championship, Ron Krisher secured the 10th and final
spot when 11th-place driver Ronnie Humphrey lost to Allen
Johnson in the second round.
Arana Jr. raced to his first career win in Pro Stock Motorcycle
when he held off Jerry Savoie in the final round. Arana Jr.
rode his Lucas Oil Buell to a 6.867 at 192.60 to take the win
in his second consecutive final round appearance for the season.
"It has not sunk in on me yet," said Arana Jr. "This is the
biggest race of the year and I won it in my rookie year.
For all my family, this is a hometown event and it just doesn't
get any better than this." Eddie Krawiec locked up the No. 1
spot in Pro Stock Motorcycle for the Countdown to the
Championship while Jim Underdahl secured the final spot with his
semifinal round finish.
The NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship
Jirka Kaplan AA/AM
When Jirka Kaplan recently made that historic 5.974-second
pass in his Competition Eliminator AA/AM '27 Ford Altered
at Mission Raceway during qualifying at the Division 6
Lucas Oil Series event, it was exactly what he had been aiming
for, though it came at a time when he really didn't expected it.
For the past four years, Kaplan had been chasing the number
5, and he wanted to be the first to eclipse the barrier. In
2007 he wanted it, but the car didn't want to cooperate and
he just didn't have enough power, so he and his cohorts
went back to the shop and got back to work on research
and development. At the end of the following season, on
November 8, 2008, their efforts were evident when Kaplan
was a rocket ship at the Las Vegas Pacific Division event,
clocking an exceptional 6.068 at 225.71 mph.
They had something in their hands that was making big
waves in the performance-based class, but a rule change
that put their blower on the wrong side of legal also put a
big kink in forward progress, and a regrouping was required.
"We lost power, but me and my friend Les Davenport were
running an A/Fuel car [with Davenport as the builder/driver],
and we were able to apply quite a bit of what we learned
from that car to this one," said Kaplan. "I prepared it the way
I thought it should be run, and we were lucky that it had
enough sauce to make it."
The effective strategy included sinking what is a virtual twin
of Kaplan's current Comp engine into the A/Fueler - in fact,
it was the motor he ran in 2008, just complemented by a different
supercharger - and gathering notes. They were having
too much fun with the A/Fuel car to consider abandoning
that project in favor of the Comp entry, so Kaplan saved his money
and bought the pieces necessary to duplicate the powerplant.
The mean little car was another story. Kaplan bought the
Ron Williams/Victory Racecars-built Competition Eliminator
entry in 1991. It wasn't his first racecar; he initially tried out
the drag strip in a High School Challenge competition driving
a '66 El Camino that he still owns - the family calls the
Chevy Sleeping Beauty in light of its restful, or non-operative,
nature. Young Kaplan tried to rebuild the engine with
big dreams in mind, but was unsuccessful and sought help
from a friend that he went to school with - Ryan Davenport,
whose father, Les, was a drag racer with plenty of engine
knowledge. The connection would prove critical to his future
success and hunger for speed.
"At the time, Les had been running alcohol Funny Car but
decided he didn't want to do that anymore," said Kaplan.
"He helped me put together a big block Chevy for my El
Camino, and we dyno-tested it, and it made I think 800
horsepower without nitrous. But he had his Funny Car sitting
there doing nothing, and he said I could borrow it. So
we put this injected alcohol motor in it, and that was my first
actual real racecar."
Kaplan raced the flopper for two years before shelving drag
racing in favor of going to University to study Petroleum
Engineering - "to try to make something out of myself," he
said. He claims he wasn't any good at racing the Funny Car,
Page 09
OCTOBER 2011
but he acquired seat time and experience that would benefit
his future goals. "I'm too stupid to know when to quit,"
laughed Kaplan, who initially ran his altered as a bracket car
for over a decade while his business was building. "When I
had extra money that I could throw away on racecars, I
stepped up and built a blown combination."
The AA/AM class was a welcome spot for Kaplan, who started
with a small block Chevrolet and was able to run a very
quick 6.48 at Mission early in his efforts. From there, they
just kept fine tuning things until switching to a BB combination
that enabled the car to dip farther below the index than
even his current setup. Eventually, Kaplan tried out the
AA/Gas supercharged scene. It was another fast combination,
and he won races before rule changes brought about
another re-thinking and a return to AA/AM.
The altered is what Kaplan calls "an old-style alcohol Funny
Car with a lot of modern day effort put into it." They run it
like an alcohol Funny Car, which means that the car is hard
on parts - especially if it's run fast and hard like they did at
Mission. It's difficult to drive, it's expensive, and it takes a
very capable crew. But they wanted to run that 5. And they did.
Kaplan mentioned a few key contributors to that magical
moment in Mission: crew chief Davenport and Acceleration
Enterprises, chassis builders Dennis Sarmento and Wade
Ramsey of Sarmento Fabrication, and longtime Comp
Eliminator racer Brian Hyerstay. He also thanked Bearspaw
Petroleum, the company that allows him the time to get
away and enjoy this little hobby of making history, as well as
his gal, Pattie Omand. "Pattie wasn't at the race," he said,
"But she helps me a lot. Before I left to go to Mission, she
worked for a full day helping me pack the trailer and getting
the car ready to go. She would have loved to have been
there, and I sometimes discourage her from going because
it's kind of like a guy thing for us, but she is a pretty important
part of this. I'd like to thank her." "We did it because we
wanted to go fast, and we thought that with 370 cubic inches
and an old-roots type of supercharger, it would be a nice
feather in our cap."
"We're just a bunch of Canadians who don't have anything
to do in the wintertime because our cars are all in snow
drifts out here, so we have to scheme on how to make them
go fast in the summertime," he laughed. "But really, this is a
neat car, and I'd like to run it some more. It's like a shooting
star - it's gonna burn brightly for a while, and then it'll fizzle
out. In the meantime, I'd like to have fun with it."

Ventura Nationals
It’s amazing the things you remember or should I say,
the things that haunt you from your childhood. Take
your birthday for instance. Birthdays are supposed to
be happy…cake, presents, the whole enchilada. I
guess from growing up on the east coast, my birthday
would signal to me that summer is only a few weeks
from being over. It also meant school was about a
week away. For some reason, to this day, when I see
the back to school sales on TV. I have the overwhelming
urge to go out and buy a pencil case…go figure!
Nowadays when September rolls around, it means two
things. First, the U.S. Nationals and second, football
season is about to start. I have been able to attend
the "Big Go" as it’s called in Indy on two different
occasions and it was really something. The great thing
was I had a photo pass and got to shoot the starting
line, chute shots at the top end, and finish line shots
from the top of an old tower that was there. Having a
photo pass was and is something special. But having
one for Indy was one of the highlights of my career.
One of the coolest things about my last trip to Indy
was a small slice of my Monday morning was caught
by the TV cameras. Remember when the race coverage
was on Diamond P? Steve Evans and Dave
McClelland. Those were the days. There were about a
half dozen photogs standing at the top end. Steve
Evans did his intro right in front of us. After giving the
details, Steve says something to the effect of "We’re
ready, the still photographers are ready (the cameras
pans over to us) and the finals from Indy are coming up"!
What a day, I still have that on a VHS tape somewhere!
Indy just has that mystique…dreams and upsets are
realized on the grand stage. After the Summer
Nationals this year, I was hoping my old buddy Paul
Weise would have made the trip west. But the
almighty dollar kept him in the garage. Paul’s car,
The Ultimate Warrior, qualified for Englishtown and got
some good TV time in the process. Doing the same at
Indy would have been the icing on the cake for those
guys. I hope he can get some money together for next year.
So like the rest of us, the Ultimate Warrior team
watched from home and honestly, it really wasn’t a
bad place to be. I really enjoyed the coverage. This
year, we were treated to six hours of U.S. Nationals
racing. What a great way to spend the day, get a few
things done around the house, watch the drags, and
be done early enough to get outside and barbeque….oh
yeah, refreshing beverage required for all
BBQ operations!
Labor Day was the first time since my knee surgery,
back at the beginning of August, that I really went out
Page 10
Doug Adams
for the whole day. I pretty much refused to be a couch
potato for four weeks, but it took a few weeks before I
could get around comfortably. It was really hard staying
home when there were car shows and cruise
nights every weekend. Plus, knowing I had to cover
an event for a newsstand magazine and the loyal
Quick-Timers, I wanted to make sure I was ready for
a full day of walking around. So, I set my sights on
Saturday, September 3rd as the day I would get back
in the swing of things and go out to a car show.
With my gear packed up, I drove off into a foggy early
Saturday morning and headed south to Ventura for
the 9th Annual Ventura Nationals at the historic
Ventura Fairgrounds. I stopped by Six-bucks, along
the way for a cup of coffee and a breakfast treat.
Getting to the fairgrounds early paid off this year. The
kid collecting the money for parking was half asleep
and he let me cruise right on by, that was nice of him.
The gates didn’t open to the public until 9 AM, but I
was there a little after 6, walking around, and taking
photos of the cars that had lined up waiting to get in.
When there was a break in the action, I walked up to
the people that were signing the drivers-up and
directing them into fairgrounds. I figured I might just
see if I could get in early and shoot before the crowds
came. Since I was on assignment, I had no problem
dropping the name of the magazine or the editor without
hesitation. They welcomed me in….so far so
good! That six bucks for coffee and cake was a distant
memory at this point because I just saved five bucks to park
and fifteen to get in the door. It was my lucky day!
Normally, early mornings at the beach are a little
overcast just like it was at Pismo a few issues ago.
But just give it until late morning and the sun does
its job--the marine layer is gone. Today would be the
exception…so much for my luck. The cloud cover
lasted most of the day, with the sun popping out for
brief periods.
Walking around the show, I immediately noticed that
there were many cars there that didn’t look familiar.
The gasser guys that I expected to see didn’t show,
but they were replaced by a group of new gassers.
The altered wheelbase 50 Ford in the photos was
really cool. The rear was moved forward ten inches
and the front four inches. It’s a really nice car, and I
hope he brings it up to the Hot Rod Ranch next
month for the Gasser Round-Up on Oct. 8th.
Toward the end of the day, I ran into some folks loading
a "barn find" T-bucket onto a trailer. When I
walked over and talked to them, I found out that they

Ventura Nationals Doug Adams
were the guys from Hot Rod Alley--a shop here in my
town. I’m still amazed by all the stuff that’s around
here. According to Don, the owner, he bought the
bucket from a guy that had it stored in a barn, of
course, somewhere in the high desert. Sort of around
El Mirage. Don went on to tell me that the car allegedly
appeared in the movie Hot Rods to Hell.
He couldn’t confirm the rumour, but hey, who’s going
to know? If you look at the car close, you can see that
all the parts, paint, and styling are 60’s vintage.
Now normally, I wouldn’t have information like this.
But my assignment included doing some writing.
A brief intro and captions along with the photos. So
suffice it to say, I’m full of it….information that is!
With that I’m going to wrap it up with my pick of the
day, a beautiful 41 Buick Super. This car was a show
stopper and had a crowd around it all day due in part
to it’s amazing copper trim. I’ve seen little bits of copper
on cars and it looks cool, but this Buick was
something. The copper against the mirror finish black
paint was stunning. The hub caps provided some
interesting photos too.
Well gang, I’m going to wrap it up. I’m not sure what
I’ll have for you next month. There’s a bunch of stuff
going on. You’ll just have to wait and see. Until then,
enjoy the photos. (Don’t tell anyone, but you might be
getting a preview of a few shots right here on the
pages of Quick-Times well before that newsstand
magazine comes out.) For anyone going to the
California Hot Rod Reunion, maybe I’ll see you there!
2011 Dover Dragstrip Nostalgia Drags by Jack Feige
The third annual Dover Drag strip Nostalgia Drags at
Lebanon Valley Dragway in West Lebanon N.Y.
This year the event was moved from Island Dragway
in New Jersey to Lebanon Valley Dragway, for those
who don’t know the history of Dover drag strip it
opened on May 14,1961 and was open thru 1976
when it closed. Located on route twenty two in
Wingdale NY. Like many strips in the East it had its
share of booking the greats of the sport, Garlits, Ivo,
Prudhomme and the "Golden Greek" just to name a
few. It ran under a few sanctioning bodies over the
years but sadly like Lions, O.C.I.R. and Conn.
Dragway it became just a memory. But the neat part
about Dover was its weekly racer’s and people who
were a part of it.
They keep its memory alive, a yearly reunion is held
and the past three years a Nostalgia drag race has
been held. This year besides the Dover cars the
North East Gasser association and N.E.T.O (North
East Timing Organization) filled out a very nice program.
Also six injected nostalgia funny cars were featured.
On Saturday a license run by Ron Deedy gave
everyone a scare when the throttle on his ‘68 Firebird
bodied funny hung open on the burn out. Ron’s car
took a left turn into the Christmas tree, wrapping it self
around it, cutting the body into pieces and landing
upside down. The chassis sliding along the concrete
center divider coming to rest where the Lebanon track
crew did a great job of getting twenty year old Ron out
of the car unhurt, I am sure shaken but none the
worse after a pretty scary crash.
Once racing resumed the crowd was treated to an
afternoon of wheel standing gassers. Nostalgia comp
eliminator featuring front motored dragsters, altereds
and door slammers. Stockers, Modified production
and even a couple of factory experimental cars gave a
feel of a time gone by. On Saturday two classes were
held Dover Weekend Non Electronic, Jeff Heppner
took the win over Jim Schmidbauer. And in Dover
Weekend Electronic Bill Arpine edged out Grant
Nichols for the win. These classes were designed to
give something old, (non elec.) and something new,
were allowed limited new technology.
Sunday arrived with the weather clear but the forecast
of a threat of rain in the afternoon. The rain did arrive
like predicted, halting the race activity for awhile but
after a track drying session, racing resumed. And the
third Dover Nostalgia drags were in the books.
Page 22
The Winners were as followed N.E.T.O. Comp. Joe
Morrison in his stretched ‘48 Fiat, N.E.T.O. Nostalgia
J.Kenly ‘72 Dodge, Dover 4 speed Johnny Reale ‘66
Chevy, Dover Comp. Austin Lobban Spitzer dragster,
Dover Vintage (pre-1976) Frank Ware Jr. ‘71 Chevy,
Dover New-Post 1976 Jim Gagnon.
This was a neat run off ‘Dover King of the Hill" Austin
Lobban`s dragster over Frank Ware’s Chevy, Dover
Motorcycle Ron Blake. The event had a special class
for the ladies "Powder Puff" won by Karyl Bell over
Jamie Bleakley, which wrapped it up for this year.
On a personal note, I was in high school when I visited
Dover, a friend campaigned a C/S Camaro flat towing
it behind his Moms station wagon, yeah flat towing
pretty scary by today’s standards, but we were not
alone it was pretty common back in the early seventies.
It was pure and simple, a tower, some grandstands,
two lanes of asphalt, lots of great cars!
A very cool place, it had its own personality.
I would like to thank Lebanon Valley Dragway for its
hospitality and the volunteers who made this a neat
show to go see and a BIG Thank you to the Dover
gang. They worked hard to make this happen. If you
Don't miss out on this year's 20th celebration of the
largest nostalgic drag racing and hot rodding event in
the West Coast, the 2011 California Hot Rod Reunion
presented by Automobile Club of Southern California,
Oct. 21-23 at Auto Club Famoso Raceway.
The Reunion is a 3-day festival of speed, hot rods
and American automotive enthusiasm. The season
finale of the NHRA's Hot Rod Heritage nostalgia drag
racing series also takes place at the Reunion. Make
your plans now to attend the Reunion and join thousands
of hot rodders and race fans in Bakersfield for
the annual Reunion.
Three action-packed days of nostalgic drag racing
keeps the grandstands at Auto Club Famoso
Raceway jammed. As many as 300 racers in
Nostalgia Top Fuel, Nostalgia Funny Car, A/Fuel,
Junior Fuel, 7.0 Pro, A/Gas, Nostalgia Eliminator,
A/FX and Exhibition battle it out for the Reunion
championship. The Reunion is also the season finale
of the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series.
It's the place to be!
Twice the Cackle!! The first Cacklefest was back in
2000 (at the California Hot Rod Reunion in
Bakersfield, Calif.) it featured only nine dragsters,
but as the event's popularity rose with subsequent
Reunions so did the Cacklefest . To the uninitiated,
the "Cacklefest" is not the sounds you hear at the
henhouse. A Cacklefest is the sweetest sound in the
world if your a nitro junkie. The Cacklefest starts with
participants push-starting their front-engine dragsters
as they did in the 1950s and '60s, gathering them all
together down the center of the drag strip with the
engines running, or cackling. Reunion fans will be
getting not one but two Cacklefest shows, one on
Page 30
e-mail ads@quick-times.com
Saturday (Oct. 22) evening and a static-start up on
Sunday (Oct. 23). Some of this year's notable cacklers
are the 1957 Cook & Bedwell dragster, Tom
McEwen's Tirend Activity Booster AA/Fuel Dragster,
Big John Mazmanian's "Football" AA/Gas Supercharged
Austin, the Adams and McEwen Shark Car, and Shirley
Muldowney's Rear Engine Top Fuel Dragster. It'll be a big hit
and memories will be made, guaranteed!
The Reunion also brings together a unique group of
the motorsports legends, heroes and old-school fans
who relive the early days of drag racing. Don't miss
the opportunity to meet some of these legends.
This year's racing celebs include Tom "Mongoose"
McEwen, Gas Ronda, "Jungle" Pam Hardy, TV
Tommy Ivo, the Chrisman clan and countless others.
Keep your eyes and ears open.
You may get a chance to shake hands and snap a
photo with one of your heroes! The best time to catch
them all under one roof is at Friday night's (Oct. 21)
Honoree Reception at the DoubleTree Hotel in
Bakersfield, CA. Best of all it's absolutely free to
attend. Join us in paying tribute to this year's Grand
Marshal Steve Gibbs whose vision created the wildlypopular
Reunion, and Honorees Harry Hibler, Wayne
King, John Peters, Dwight Salisbury, and George
Santos. This is a cool plus, and the Cackle here is
also very cool...BE THERE!!
Three-day credentials (a $75 value) purchased
before Oct. 7, 2011 receive $10 off and a goodie bag
filled with an official Reunion program, commemorative
dash plaque and collectible credential (items valued
at $15). Extra bonus: Auto Club members
receive an additional discount. Show your card and
save $5 per three-day credential.
Produced by the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports
Museum, presented by the Automobile Club of
Southern California, the Reunion is part of the museum's
"living history" philosophy, which works to bring
to life the sights, sounds and people who made
history in the early days of drag racing, land speed
racing and the golden age of American car culture.
This year Grand Marshal Steve Gibbs will lead an
amazing group of drag racing legends including
Honorees Harry Hibler, Wayne King, John Peters,
Dwight Salisbury, and George Santos to the Mecca
of nostalgic drag racing and hot rods -
The Auto Club Famoso Raceway.
