Financial Aid <strong>Triton</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Catalog</strong>, <strong>2008</strong>-<strong>2009</strong><br />
award, it may be used to help pay in-district tuition<br />
and some fees.<br />
Students also will apply for the Federal Pell Grant<br />
through completion of the FAFSA. The Pell Grant<br />
can be used for tuition, books, transportation and other<br />
educational expenses.<br />
The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity<br />
Grant (SEOG) is awarded to students still demonstrating<br />
exceptional need after receiving the MAP, IIA<br />
and Federal Pell Grant awards.<br />
Loans<br />
The Federal Family Education Student Loan,<br />
(Stafford Student Loan) allows a student to borrow at<br />
a low interest rate. Repayment begins six months after<br />
the student ceases to be enrolled in six or more credit<br />
hours. The student may borrow up to $3,500, if eligible.<br />
A student who has successfully completed the first<br />
year of a program of study of undergraduate education,<br />
but who has not yet successfully completed the<br />
remainder of the program, may borrow up to $4,500<br />
for a program of study of at least one academic year in<br />
length. Money may be used toward tuition, fees, books,<br />
transportation and other educational expenses.<br />
Scholarship Opportunities<br />
In an effort to reward students for their academic<br />
ability and involvement in community and school<br />
activities, <strong>Triton</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers prospective and current<br />
students the opportunity to apply for scholarships.<br />
Scholarships are available for students from a variety<br />
of sources. An updated list of available scholarships<br />
and applications can be found in the Scholarship<br />
Office located in the Financial Aid Office, Room<br />
216W in the <strong>College</strong> Center or from the Financial Aid<br />
section of <strong>Triton</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s Web site.<br />
In addition to institutional scholarships, the Scholarship<br />
Office has a list of scholarships available to students in<br />
specific areas of study, such as accounting, education, criminal<br />
justice, health careers, graphic arts/printing, etc. Infor-<br />
mation on these scholarships and those offered by a variety<br />
of service organizations is available in the Scholarship<br />
Office. Additional scholarship information may be located<br />
in the Transfer Center.<br />
Work Study<br />
The Federal <strong>College</strong> Work Study Program<br />
enables a student to work 15-20 hours per week on<br />
campus. This is a need-based program and students<br />
must qualify for financial aid. Students who qualify<br />
for the program will work in various areas of the college<br />
as long as funds are available.<br />
The <strong>Triton</strong> Work Study program is a non-need based<br />
program. The number of hours per week a student can<br />
work is based on the position and its allocation.<br />
Students can find out more information on both<br />
programs through the Work Study Office located in<br />
the Financial Aid Office, Room 216W in the <strong>College</strong><br />
Center.<br />
Students wishing to work off campus may investigate<br />
job listings in the Job Opportunity Bulletin or stop<br />
by Career Services, Room 113 in the <strong>College</strong> Center.<br />
Veterans Benefits<br />
<strong>Triton</strong> <strong>College</strong> is approved by the Illinois Department<br />
of Veterans Affairs state approving agency for<br />
the training of eligible persons.<br />
Illinois Veterans Grant (IVG)<br />
The Illinois Veterans Grant is available to veterans of<br />
World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War and<br />
Desert Storm, in addition to veterans who have at least one<br />
year of active duty in the US Armed Forces.<br />
The grant will pay for in- or out-of-district tuition (if<br />
a chargeback cannot be obtained), and certain fees at all<br />
state-controlled colleges, universities and community colleges.<br />
The grant may be used for a period equivalent to<br />
four calendar years, including summer terms. Use of the<br />
program is determined by a point system in which the<br />
maximum number of points available is 120.<br />
Illinois National Guard Scholarship<br />
Eligibility — Must be on active duty and must have<br />
served for at least one year in the Illinois National Guard<br />
or Naval Militia. Recipients must maintain satisfactory academic<br />
progress. This program covers tuition and most fees<br />
at Illinois state-controlled universities or public community<br />
colleges. An applicant is eligible for 120 units of eligibility.<br />

Financial Aid Standards of<br />
Academic Progress Policy<br />
Public Law 99-498 requires that students make satisfactory<br />
and measurable academic progress in order to be<br />
eligible for state and federal financial assistance. When students<br />
attend <strong>Triton</strong> <strong>College</strong> and receive aid from any of the<br />
following federal programs: Pell Grant, <strong>College</strong> Work<br />
Study, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant,
