“When I began IMS in August of 2006, my
Message from the President
For the last two years, and then some, James City
County has been involved in an open and transparent
process to guide its future through development
of a forward-thinking comprehensive plan. The
staff and volunteer leadership of this process has
been inspiring, the process exemplary.
Your Chamber & Tourism Alliance has been involved
representing the business community since the
start. Our effort has been led by a task force chaired
by our new board chair, Jim Golden. That group
included Nick Barrett (Prime Outlets), Robin Carson
(Kingsmill Resort & Spa), Brien Craft (Walmart Distribution
Center), Paul Gerhardt (Kaufman Canoles),
Tory Gussman (Colonial Williamsburg), Charlie
Martino (Cooke’s Gardens), Gary Massie (Jack L.
Massie Contractor), Joe Mastaler (Witt Mares),
Brian McNelis (Anheuser Busch), Marc Sharp
(Bush Construction), Mike Matthews (The Structures
Group), Bob Singley (RJS & Associates), Randy Smith
(Prudential Town Realty), and Marshall Warner
(Chesapeake Bank). This group worked tirelessly
to attend every public meeting and develop our
recommendations throughout the process. They
have done all of us and the entire Historic Triangle
a great service.
Our most recent involvement was
to provide remarks at a recent
James City County Board Meeting.
The process has not been without disagreement, as
has been chronicled in the press. This is as it should
be when a community is considering a plan that will
provide guidance for years into the future. As with
any such process, compromise will eventually be the
end result.
Our most recent involvement was to provide remarks
at a recent James City County Board Meeting. Excerpts
of our remarks are included here. Once the plan is
adopted, we will move to stage two, working with the
County as it makes changes to zoning regulations to
bring them into compliance with the Comprehensive
Plan. We hope that the end result will be conditions
that will foster business success for you, as well as a
quality of life we all seek. That is one of the reasons
this organization exists.
Sincerely,
Richard Schreiber, President/CEO
Outlook |December 2009
Excerpts of Remarks to JCC Board,
November 10, 2009
The Chamber & Tourism Alliance has been privileged to
participate in the comprehensive planning process from
its earliest dates. We have attended all the community
conversations, surveyed our membership, reported the
findings and interacted with the steering committee and
staff. The process has truly been inclusive in its attempt
to involve citizens of James City County, and we have
been particularly impressed with the caliber of discussion
by individuals and organizations.
The survey of our membership confirmed that the six
issues identified in the comprehensive plan – uniqueness
of the area, business development, tourism, workforce
development, transportation and master planning – were
all very important. Of specific importance to us were the
inclusion of tourism, the area’s largest single industry;
workforce housing to ensure that our workers are able to
live near where they work; transportation systems that
facilitate their ability to get to work and provision for
balanced growth to occur in the future.
We are very pleased with the plan that has been recommended
to you. While not everything we wanted is
included, all ideas were considered as part of the process
and we respect the ideas of others that may have taken
precedence. There has been considerable discussion of
growth as it relates to the future of James City County.
This, of course, is a fundamental issue, both as it affects
lifestyle considerations and the economy. It deserves the
serious discussion it has had.
The Chamber & Tourism Alliance believes that growth
in the County’s economic base must be accommodated
in the plan. Without some growth in that base, we will
have increasing tax burdens caused by growing imbalance
with planned residential expansion. Our members
recognize the importance of maintaining the uniqueness
of our area. James City County’s quality of life is an asset
for every resident as well as being our key competitive
advantage to attract businesses, residents, and visitors.
We need a balanced economic portfolio that preserves
the uniqueness of our historic area and attracts and
maintains complementary businesses. One important
part of achieving balance will be clear guidance in the
plan concerning large tracts of land that are appropriate
for development and those that are not. The economic
opportunity zones reflected in the plan are one means
of ensuring that the scope of growth is measured and
the location is established in a proper area.
The answer is simple. Because they like and trust you…because
they have a relationship with you. In today’s fast-paced world we’ve become so automated that we’ve decided an email or a text
message is sufficient to say thank you. We communicate through cyberspace. We’ve become desensitized. It’s time to put the
human touch back into your life. Typical advertising and blanket marketing are great for spreading the word about your business,
but they should never be used for “Relationship Marketing.”
True “Relationship Marketing” is about reaching out and genuinely caring about the customer or client. They’re not just
names on a database...they’re not just somebody you’re trying to promote to or get business from...they’re human beings. They
have needs, goals and desires…they have children, birthdays and special occasions. They’re looking for people who care about
them just like we all are. Bob Burg said it best, “People do business with and refer others to those they know, like and trust.”
When our client or prospect thinks about our product or service, we want our name at the top of their mind. To create this
“Top of Mind” experience, we must implement a Relationship Marketing system into our overall marketing.
Remember this: “Appreciation Wins Over Self-Promotion Every Time.” – Kody Bateman
Harley Steele is a Senior Manager with SendOutCards, and is passionate about helping business professionals improve their
relationships with customers and prospects. He shows people how SOC’s simple, yet highly effective and unique relationship marketing
system can create more referrals than they can handle. Harley offers everyone a free test drive of his service, so they can experience
the ease and efficiency of SendOutCards. 757.645.8978
The newest artist to exhibit in the Art Gallery of the Greater Williamsburg
Chamber & Tourism Alliance is abstract painter Dorothy Grebos. Her
works will be on display through the end of January.
Dorothy Grebos, originally trained as a musician at Carnegie Mellon
University, recently retired from a lifelong career in music and is now a
full-time artist residing in Williamsburg. She describes her painting as
an extension of her musical background with emphasis on rhythm,
“Caribe”
movement, color and harmony. Grebos has exhibited at the Glen Allen
Cultural Arts Center, the Senate Building in Richmond, and locally at the Trellis Restaurant and
This Century Art Gallery. Her work has also been featured in two publications: Best of Virginia
Artists and Artisans and Best of National Artists and Artisans. Her work currently can be seen at
SCORE Answers:
Counselors to America’s Small Business
If you have a “cash” business,
customers pay in full at the time of
product or service delivery. However,
it is customary in some industries for
purchases to be made on account. In these
cases the term “receivables” is one that
small business owners quickly become
familiar with. This is money owed to your
business. Receivables can become a problem
if clients are slow to pay—or worse, if
they are not paying at all.
The process of collecting money from
customers is simply part of running a
business and it has to be managed. There
are three things—just three—that business
owners need to put in place in order to get
paid according to your terms.
• Grant credit only to customers who
are both willing and capable of paying
on time. Using a credit application
and checking credit references is a
good place to start. The form should
also ask who is authorized to place
orders, whether purchase orders are
required and who should receive the
invoice. Customers that are new
businesses with no credit history
should be considered for a trial period
of COD sales.
• Prepare and send an invoice that is
professional, concise, clear and
accurate. Customers are more likely
to pay promptly if your invoice arrives
in a timely fashion and it is clear and
simple. Of course your invoice should
be computer-generated and should
clearly be labeled “Invoice.” Be sure to
specify how the check should be made
out and where it should be sent; include
a phone number and contact name
for questions
• Systematically follow up on overdue
invoices. Even with credit-worthy
customers and great invoices, not all
bills will be paid on time. Your job is to
ensure that someone in your business
is assigned to follow up (preferably by
phone, preferably weekly) to determine
the payment status of the invoice. Don’t
wait too long to begin follow-up; if you
sell net 30, a polite phone call on Day 35
is certainly appropriate.
