Below is an example of a checklist you might create for yourself, depending on<br />

where you are going, what you will be doing, how long you will be gone, etc. See<br />

CLOTHING<br />

o 1-2 pair of walking shoes (broken in)<br />

o 1 pair of shower shoes<br />

o 3-5 pairs of socks<br />

o 5-7 pairs of underwear<br />

o 1-2 pairs of shorts<br />

o 1-2 pairs of slacks or skirt<br />

o 2 shirts/blouses<br />

o 1 sweater/sweatshirt<br />

o 1 poncho/rain jacket<br />

o 1 jacket (the weight depends on<br />

the climate, be sure you know what<br />

season you will be there, Note: the<br />

seasons are opposite below the<br />

equator)<br />

o 1 bathing suit<br />

o 1 dressy outfit, including shoes, for<br />

going out<br />

MEDICINE<br />

(Pack in your CARRY-ON Luggage)<br />

o prescription medicine (Keep it in the<br />

original bottle and carry a copy of the<br />

prescription.)<br />

o eyeglasses and prescription (an extra<br />

pair of glasses)<br />

o contact lenses and prescription (an<br />

extra pair of contacts)<br />

o lens cleaning solution<br />

o contraceptives/condoms<br />

o Aspirin/Tylenol/Advil<br />

o any other over-the-counter<br />

medications you use<br />

o Take small amounts of personal care<br />

items unless you have a favorite you<br />

o deodorant<br />

o first-aid kit<br />

o tissue (theirs may be a little rougher<br />

than you are used to)<br />

o tampons<br />

o razor blades (cannot be packed in<br />

carry-on bags)<br />

o sunglasses<br />

o brush and/or comb<br />

o washcloth<br />

DOCUMENTS<br />

o Money belt or neck wallet inclusive of<br />

the following:<br />

o passport<br />

o tickets and rail passes<br />

o student ID card<br />

o cash, traveler’s checks, credit card<br />

If you cannot carry all of<br />

your luggage around the<br />

block and up several flights<br />

of stairs by yourself, you<br />

have packed TOO MUCH.<br />

MISCELLANEOUS<br />

o camera and film<br />

o Swiss army knife (cannot be packed in<br />

carry-on bag!)<br />

o flashlight<br />

o books, <strong>guide</strong>s, and maps<br />

o small amount of laundry soap and line<br />

o sewing kit (cannot be packed in carryon<br />

bag!)<br />

o stuff bag/plastic storage bag for wet<br />

clothes<br />

o change purse<br />

o umbrella<br />

o luggage locks and tags (on your<br />

luggage both inside and out)<br />

o battery-operated alarm clock<br />

o moist towelettes<br />

o pictures of your family and other<br />

people significant to you. (Your new<br />

friends will want to see the people you<br />

are talking about.)<br />
