Furthermore, the protests, which were
323 relatively localized to a small section 321
346 of
Bangkok, 323 did not target foreigners or
foreign business. 323 As a result, the impact
on foreign manufacturing businesses
321
was minimal. This has been borne out
323
by comments from a broad spectrum
of existing investors (e.g. Unilever, 388
Stars Micro, Dow Chemical, Bayer,
4
Purac, etc.), all of whom have reported
325
very little impact from the protests, and
projections will be met.
two
years.
35
Which leads nicely to the next reason
4
investment remains strong — the
economy.
The Thai economy showed remarkable
growth in Q1/2010, expanding by 12
percent, the fastest rate in 15 years.
4
Despite ๏ PHETCHABURI
the lengthy protests in Bangkok,
momentum has remained strong in April
and May, and government agencies
4
have increased growth projections
across the board.
4
GDP, which had originally been forecast
to grow by 3.5-4.5% is now projected
toward the high end of the 4.5-5.5%
4
range, and Prime Minister Abhisit has
4
stated that he expects full-year growth
to be close to six percent, a view shared
by many financial institutions.
Part of the optimism is related to
exports, which is Thailand’s traditional
engine of growth. In May, exports grew
by 42.1% year-on-year to $16.6 billion,
the highest level in almost two years.
This led the Commerce Ministry to
revise its export growth projection for
the year to 18%, up from 14%.
A significant portion of the export and
GDP growth can be attributable to
renewed demand for Thai vehicles.
Over the first five months of 2010,
production increased by 97% to more
than 620,000 units, with domestic
car sales up 52.2% and exports up by
