Bridging The Distance

MISSION STATEMENT 

The Indianapolis Zoo inspires local and global communities to celebrate, protect, 

and preserve our natural world through conservation, education, and research and 

by providing an enriching and wondrous environment for our visitors and the 

animals in our care.

If you drew a straight line between Indianapolis and Tarangire National Park in Tanzania, the distance would be about 

8,000 miles. But if you tugged on that line, from either direction, you’d find that the distance decreases to zero. How is that 

possible? If Muir is correct, and actual experience bears him out, then what Hoosiers do is connected to a 1,000-square-mile 

wilderness in Africa directly through the Indianapolis Zoo. 

This report will detail how the Zoo and the people of Indiana, in partnership with other conservation-minded entities 

around the globe, have bridged the distances between us in common cause – to help preserve the wild places and wild things 

of Earth for the children of tomorrow. What you contribute to us in treasure, both human and monetary, impacts what we 

are able to accomplish on your behalf, and what has been achieved is remarkable, as these pages illustrate.

A BUTTERFLY FLAPS ITS WINGS AND THE WEATHER CHANGES IN CHINA 

This phrase (and its many variants) represents one of the most-quoted tenets of 

Chaos Theory. Because of the remarkable dependence on upstream conditions 

in nonlinear systems, making small changes in the initial input values will have 

dramatic effects on the final outcome of the system. In other words, even the 

smallest alteration in actions, through a series of events, can ultimately have a 

profound impact on future developments. 

In the zoo world, our actions are not chaotic by nature, but we intend (and 

we hope) that they will have significant impacts on the ultimate survival of 

endangered wild things and wild places. Whether it’s breeding the most 

endangered lizard in the world, helping establish safe migratory routes for 

elephants in Tanzania, tracking the effect of climate change on animal species, 

or supporting the conservation of cranes through the Indianapolis Prize, our 

influence is felt and becomes part of global efforts to conserve the Earth and 

all its inhabitants. 

In this past year alone, our new Oceans presented by Old National Bank 

exhibit broke new ground in how the Zoo interprets our collection, providing 

context to our visitors on the inter-relationships between man, animal and 

habitat, and the effects of our actions, for good or ill, on the planet we jointly 

occupy. We continued our groundbreaking research in elephant and reptile 

reproductions, embraced and instituted green initiatives inside and outside the 

Zoo, got reaccredited, and were honored nationally for our long-term project 

reproducing the world’s second rarest lizard. 

One of the best illustrations of our mission focus is the work of Dr. George 

Archibald, the 2006 recipient of the $100,000 Indianapolis Prize and the Lilly 

Medal. In 2007, Archibald’s International Crane Foundation (ICF) celebrated 

several extraordinary achievements, including a record number of whooping 

cranes that began their first-ever migration. In addition, ICF began diverse field 

programs around the world, made possible in part by the Indianapolis Prize. 

“The Indianapolis Prize gave global attention to the achievements of the 

International Crane Foundation. The prize money was established as a challenge 

grant to our board and members and effectively doubled its financial impact on 

ICF, benefiting several major conservation initiatives in North America, Asia, 

and Africa,” Archibald said. “From a personal viewpoint, the award confirmed 

that optimism and hard work are effective.” 

We couldn’t agree more, and we’d like to express our deepest appreciation to 

all the optimists whom we are honored to cite in this annual report. Every 

dollar you contributed, every hour you spent working, every child you brought 

whose eyes were opened in wonder at the beauty and complexities of the 

natural world, are like the flapping of those butterfly wings – small actions 

with consequences that are immense. Thank you for giving us the privilege of 

helping George and the many other conservation heroes of this world whose 

impact contributes to saving the world we all share. Your wings may have

SAVE THE OCEANS, SAVE OURSELVES 

“It’s not just about seeing whales or trying to save fish and 

birds. It’s about saving us.”

When it comes to the oceans of the world, 

Cousteau could not be more prescient. 

Just consider: 

• An estimated 80% of all life on Earth is found 

under the ocean surface, and the oceans contain 

99% of the living space on the planet. 

• The oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface 

and contain 97% of the Earth’s water. 

• More than 90% of the trade between 

countries is carried by ships, and about half 

the communications between nations use 

underwater cables. 

• The top 10 feet of the oceans holds as much 

heat as the entire atmosphere. 

• Antarctica has as much ice as the Atlantic 

Ocean has water. 

• Air pollution is responsible for 33% of the toxic 

contaminants that end up in oceans and coastal 

waters. About 44% of the toxic contaminants come 

from runoff via rivers and streams. 

• Each year, three times as much rubbish is dumped 

into the world’s oceans as the weight of fish caught. 

• More oil reaches the oceans each year as a result 

of leaking automobiles and other non-point sources 

than the oil spilled in Prince William Sound by the 

Exxon Valdez. 

• Fish supply the greatest percentage of the world’s 

protein consumed by humans, and most of the 

world’s major fisheries are being fished at levels 

above their maximum sustainable yield. Some 

regions are severely over fished. 

In other words, the world’s oceans are in big trouble, 

and when they’re in trouble so are we – the humans 

who occupy the other 29% of the Earth’s surface. 

Those stark facts formed the concept behind Oceans 

presented by Old National Bank that opened on Memorial 

Day weekend 2007. This unique Zoo exhibit continues 

the Zoo’s plan to create truly stunning exhibits that draw 

visitors into a multi-sensory experience that impacts 

them both emotionally and intellectually. As the name 

implies, the focus is those huge bodies of sea water that 

are collectively referred to as the oceans. Humans are 

connected to the oceans in every way possible, and human 

behavior impacts the oceans and the animals and plants 

that live in them and around them and depend on them 

for survival. 

Although they are valued, the oceans are often mistreated, 

ultimately to the detriment of the very people doing the 

mistreating. Everything in the Oceans exhibit is intended 

to help our visitors make the connection between behavior 

and results – and encourage those individuals to modify 

their behaviors to create positive outcomes. 

In the Oceans exhibit, visitors see a diverse collection 

of animals of unusual shapes or brilliant colors that 

represent startling skills and unusual lifestyles. But 

in Oceans, they do much more than see fascinating 

specimens. In a visually stimulating environment, they 

also hear and touch. Often, they go further still and speak 

with available staff members or express their opinion at 

interactive polling stations. 

From the tranquil reflecting pool in the 

OneAmerica Foundation Entry Gallery to the 

Efroymson Gallery’s stunning collection of 

bonnethead sharks to the extraordinary shark touch 

pool in the Firestone Gallery, each collection of 

Oceans’ creatures demonstrates the diversity of 

life, its interdependence with habitat, and man’s 

sometimes pernicious influence on both. 

Throughout Oceans, visitors see and experience 

some beautiful and very informative interpretive 

signage detailing the relationship of animals 

to their environments, humans to animals, and 

global warming to the oceans. And visitors have 

the opportunity to express their views through 

the unique and interactive Nina Mason Pulliam 

Charitable Trust Polling Stations. One of the most 

startling results from the polling is that more than 

80% of the visitors said they thought their actions 

could impact the health of the oceans. Those are 

thoughts that can translate to actions, and actions 

ultimately are all we have left to save our oceans 

and ourselves in the process.

21 BABIES THAT REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE 

There are estimated to be less than 100 surviving 

Jamaican iguanas in the wild, and in 2006, there 

were about a quarter of that number in zoos and 

sanctuaries. When the numbers get this few, every 

addition matters and that’s what happened when 

the Indianapolis Zoo staff managed to double the 

population of Jamaican iguanas in human care 

with the birth of 21 of these rare lizards, a feat 

never before achieved at any zoo. At its national 

conference in Philadelphia in September 2007, 

the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) 

honored us with its Edward H. Bean Award for 

the Zoo’s long-term propagation and management 

program for endangered Jamaican iguanas, the 

second rarest lizards in the world. Jamaican iguanas 

are just slightly less endangered than their cousin, 

the Grand Cayman blue iguana, another species 

that the Indianapolis Zoo has bred successfully. 

“AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are critical 

to the survival of many species, and this award 

recognizes the leadership of the Indianapolis Zoo 

in that effort,” said AZA President and CEO Jim 

Maddy. “The Indianapolis Zoo demonstrates a 

significant commitment and passion for wildlife 

conservation every day, and the Jamaican iguana 

conservation program is a great example of this 

important work.” 

In 1994, the Indianapolis Zoo was one of only three 

zoos in North America to receive juvenile Jamaican 

iguanas as part of an overall conservation program 

that included establishing a breeding population in 

the U.S. Since then three additional zoos have been 

added to the program. Before these 21 hatchlings, 

there were only 18 Jamaican iguanas at six zoos in 

North America. Each year, the Indianapolis Zoo 

staff has made strides in developing an

in-house captive breeding program. Even before the 

successful hatchlings, the Zoo had been the only 

institution outside Jamaica to have fertile eggs or a 

developed embryo. 

AZA presents the Edward H. Bean Award annually 

in recognition of efforts by its member institutions 

in the long-term management and husbandry 

of various animal species in accredited zoos and 

aquariums. The Edward H. Bean Award was 

established in 1956, honoring Edward H. Bean, 

the first director of the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. 

The Indianapolis Zoo also received the Edward 

H. Bean Award in 2001 in honor of its long-term 

research program into elephant reproduction that 

produced the first and second African elephants 

to be conceived and born through artificial 

insemination.

WHERE ELEPHANTS WALK 

It’s unlikely you ever thought the migratory path 

of Tanzania’s elephants ever came through the 

city of Indianapolis, but in a surprising way, that’s 

just what is happening. Although Tanzania is 

8,000 miles from the Indianapolis Zoo, we have 

partnered with Dr. Charles Foley and the Tarangire 

Elephant Project in Tanzania to protect migration 

corridors from the Tarangire National Park to the 

Ngorongoro Conservation Area. 

The Park is located in the heart of Maasai land, an 

important refuge for animals during dry periods, 

and home to the fastest-growing herd of elephants 

on the African continent. The traditional migration 

routes used by the Park’s animals have been 

disrupted by human settlement and agriculture, 

and the Tarangire Elephant Project is working to 

stop human encroachment into the last remaining 

open migration corridors by providing local 

inhabitants with economic incentives and protection 

to the animals when they leave the Park. The dollars 

generated by the Zoo – by you – make that possible. 

tAnZAnIA 

Climate Change Impact 

The Indianapolis Zoo is also partnering with 

the IUCN – The World Conservation Union, 

one of the world’s largest conservation networks. 

The Indianapolis Zoo, in partnership with the 

MacArthur Foundation, is supporting the IUCN’s 

project documenting the known impacts of 

climate change on species and habitat. Through 

the gathering and analysis of the data gathered 

through this project, the IUCN hopes to guide the 

development of methods and tools for reducing the 

impacts of climate change on vulnerable species. 

Years in the making, the data will enable us all to 

better understand which species are at greatest risk. 

life on earth is disappearing fast and will continue to do so unless urgent action is 

taken, according to the 2007 IuCn Red list of threatened Species, the world’s most 

authoritative assessment of the earth’s plants and animals. there are now 41,415 

species on the IuCn Red list and 16,306 of them are threatened with extinction, 

up from 16,118 last year.

Saving the Iguanas 

Project Iguana is just one of several research 

programs conducted by Zoo staffers on an inhouse 

basis. The Project Iguana team has been 

active in the Dominican Republic (DR) working 

to save its keystone species, the Ricord’s iguana. In 

2007, the Zoo was part of a team that conducted 

Capacity Building Workshops in the DR. The Zoo 

received a grant from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 

Wildlife Without Borders administered through 

the International Iguana Foundation. Workshops 

were organized by a team of scientists from the 

Indianapolis Zoo, Durrell Wildlife Conservation 

Trust (DWCT), Grupo Jaragua, and Parque 

Zoológico Nacional (Zoodom) and focused on 

training in wildlife research techniques and species 

conservation strategies using the Ricord’s iguana 

and its habitat as an example. 

The first workshop was held in Santo Domingo 

at Zoodom and was attended by DR scientists, 

members of local conservation non-governmental 

organizations, curators from Zoodom and the 

National Aquarium, and university biology students. 

Lectures delivered by scientists from the organizing 

team stimulated considerable discussion about the 

practicality of suggested field techniques. 

The second workshop at La Descubierta, a national 

park and one of the four remaining habitats of 

the Ricord’s iguana, was attended by park rangers 

and guides and facilitated by Dr. John Fa (DWCT). 

In addition to positive, open dialogue between 

government officials and the rangers and guides, 

research techniques were also demonstrated 

on Isla Cabritos including GPS work, walking 

transects, trapping and marking animals, and health 

assessments. 

The third workshop was held in Pedernales, a town 

that boarders one of the other remaining habitats 

and where Grupo Jaragua has focused most of their 

conservation work with this species. Participants 

visited the Pedernales field site, where they observed 

the medical team collecting biological data from 

free-ranging iguanas. 

DoMInICAn RepuBlIC 

Endangered Species Species Survival Plan 

On the national front, Zoo staff 

participated in the conservation 

programs of the Association of Zoos 

& Aquariums (AZA), our national 

zoo membership organization. 

Multiple staff, from keepers to the 

General Curator, are involved in a 

range of activities, including serving 

as representatives to AZA steering 

committees for each species that 

the Zoo maintains as part of the 

AZA conservation program. The 

Indianapolis Zoo sponsors Forests 

and Deserts Curator Lynne Villers’ 

role as Species Coordinator of the 

ring-tailed lemur. In addition, the 

Zoo has committed the resources 

to maintain four North American 

regional studbooks – the African 

elephant, ring-tailed lemur, Guinea 

baboon,and Pacific walrus. 

The Indianapolis Zoo was one of 

the first institutions to participate 

in the Species Survival Plan (SSP), a 

registered program of the Association 

of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The 

SSP is a cooperative population 

management and conservation 

program for selected animal species 

in North American zoos and 

aquariums. The SSP Coordinators 

and Committees track the genetic 

backgrounds of the animal species, 

so they can make intelligent decisions 

on how to match animals to avoid 

inbreeding and maintain a healthy and 

genetically diverse captive population.

Holly Dublin, Chair of IuCn’s Species Survival Commission, said: “Conservation networks dedicated to fighting the 

extinction crisis, such as the Species Survival Commission, are working effectively. But much more help and support 

is needed as environmentalists cannot do it alone. the challenge of the extinction crisis also requires attention and 

action from the general public, the private sector, governments and policy makers to ensure that global biodiversity 

remains intact for generations to come.”

INDIANAPOLIS PRIZE CELEBRATES CONSERVATION WORLDWIDE 

No Zoo initiative better illustrates the 

interconnections between professionals from 

around the world who support the preservation of 

endangered wild things and wild places than the 

Indianapolis Prize. Through their support of the 

Prize, not only financially but in their intellectual 

and behavioral adoption of animal conservation as 

a cause, the citizens of Central Indiana reach out to 

those in the field everywhere who have made this 

cause the work of a lifetime. 

The next Indianapolis Prize will be given in 

2008, but the influence of the Prize reverberated 

throughout 2007. Not only did the 2006 

Indianapolis Prize winner, Dr. George Archibald, 

devote his $100,000 to projects throughout the 

world that involve conserving the remaining 15 

species of cranes, but the money was used as 

a challenge grant for the International Crane 

Foundation, doubling its financial impact on 

this outstanding organization. 

In 2007, the work of the 29 nominees for the Prize 

made news everywhere, spurring on more interest 

in the vital work of these scientists, whose research 

and conservation projects spanned the globe, 

representing a range of species from amphibians 

to zebras - including elephants, tigers, wolves, and 

whales among many others. 

When the six finalists for the 2008 Prize were 

announced, the subsequent news spurred media 

and public interest in the important work of these 

truly devoted and outstanding conservationists. The 

finalists included: 

As president and CEO of Save the Elephants, Dr. 

Iain Douglas-Hamilton has long been a friend to 

the largest land mammals. His pioneering study of 

the social behavior of wild elephants four decades 

ago in Tanzania formed the basis for all 

subsequent studies. Dr. Rodney Jackson, director 

and founder of the Snow Leopard Conservancy, 

has received recognition for his groundbreaking 

radio-tracking study of snow leopards in the 1980s 

and his subsequent dedication to building local 

communities’ capacity as key players in conserving 

the species. 

Senior conservation scientist with the Wildlife 

Conservation Society and premier tiger expert, Dr. 

K. Ullas Karanth energizes the new generation of 

India’s conservationists, and Laurie Marker, Ph.D., 

founder and executive director of the Cheetah 

Conservation Fund (CCF), has led a conservation 

program from humble beginnings in rural Namibia 

to an unparalleled model for predator conservation. 

As founder and president of The Ocean Alliance, 

Roger Payne, Ph.D. has devoted more than 40 

years to the study and protection of whales, helping 

to launch the “Save the Whales” movement. The 

legendary Dr. George Schaller of the Wildlife 

Conservation Society is the world’s preeminent 

field biologist and has traveled across the globe 

for more than 50 years to work with a variety of 

species, including two rediscovered species once 

thought extinct. 

As the Zoo works toward creating the 

conservationists of the future, we thank 

all of those who support this unique program.

ZOO GENERATES RECORD ATTENDANCE 

Maybe it was the chance to pet a live shark, see two baby elephants grow up or 

a mob of little meerkats huddle together, or meet a young walrus eye-to-eye. 

Whatever it was that drew them here, last year visitors came in record numbers 

to experience the fascinating stories around each corner of the Zoo grounds. 

Nearly 1.2 million visits (1,164,400) were recorded at the Zoo in 2007, an 

increase of 12.5 percent over 2006 (1,032,600) and a 6 percent increase over 

the previous record-breaking year of 2005 (1,100,000). Up close, intense, often 

one-on-one – the connections of animal to human (especially young humans) 

will last a lifetime. 

GROWING GREEN 

Chaos Theory’s butterfly analogy comes to life at White River 

Gardens, where real butterflies draw visitors even further into 

nature where the visitors’ passion for the outdoors can be 

translated into “green inspiration.” One petal at a time, the 

magic of the Gardens takes hold, providing not just sheer 

beauty and delight but instruction on practical ways to green 

up your lawn, your neighborhood, and your city. From handwritten 

Gardener’s Notes to expert advice given by master 

gardeners in the Dick Crum Resource Center, there’s always 

something to learn at the Gardens about keeping habitats 

“green” at the most fundamental level - from the ground up.

Of all the butterfly wings that flap at the Zoo, none create more impact 

than the hours spent by our volunteers assisting the staff to accomplish our 

mission. In 2007, 686 generous people served as Zoo volunteers, contributing 

an astonishing 55,111 hours of work. That translates into a dollar value of 

more than a half million dollars-$568,325 to be exact. From each hour spent, 

something wonderful may occur. 

TOUCHING YOUNG MINDS

Old Chinese adage 

The Polly Horton Hix Institute for Conservation and 

Research comprises a staff skilled in and dedicated to 

providing experiential learning opportunities in support 

of the Zoo’s conservation mission. This multi-faceted 

group of people is charged with one of the most important 

goals of the entire Zoo organization – firing the minds 

of young people with a deep, and hopefully abiding, passion 

for keeping the natural world safe. Without counting the 

thousands of children who visited the Zoo on school field 

trips, our figures indicate the many opportunities the Zoo 

had to light a spark in almost 23,000 children last year. 

The future will tell, but we are fanning the flames as hard 

as we can.
