Of all the butterfly wings that flap at the Zoo, none create more impact
than the hours spent by our volunteers assisting the staff to accomplish our
mission. In 2007, 686 generous people served as Zoo volunteers, contributing
an astonishing 55,111 hours of work. That translates into a dollar value of
more than a half million dollars-$568,325 to be exact. From each hour spent,
something wonderful may occur.

The Polly Horton Hix Institute for Conservation and
Research comprises a staff skilled in and dedicated to
providing experiential learning opportunities in support
of the Zoo’s conservation mission. This multi-faceted
group of people is charged with one of the most important
goals of the entire Zoo organization – firing the minds
of young people with a deep, and hopefully abiding, passion
for keeping the natural world safe. Without counting the
thousands of children who visited the Zoo on school field
trips, our figures indicate the many opportunities the Zoo
had to light a spark in almost 23,000 children last year.
The future will tell, but we are fanning the flames as hard
as we can.
