An Evening of Classic Rioja with Muga - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £85
Hosted by Simon Field MW, Berrys’ Spanish Buyer
Bodega Muga was founded in Haro in 1932 and is still in family ownership; the company farms 250 hectares in La
Rioja Alta and in addition has long-standing contracts with the owners of another 150 hectares. Located in the foothills
of the Montes Obarenses, the five principle vineyards (El Estepal, La Loma, Blatracones, La Loma Alta, and Sajazarra)
share clay and limestone soils, each with its own unique microclimate, informed by the happy coincidence of
continental, Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. The extended Muga family controls all aspects of the production
and advocates the complexity afforded by the entire canon of grapes, that is to say Tempranillo, of course for the red,
but also Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano in addition to Viura and Malvasia for the whites. Tonight we will have the
pleasure of tasting a flight of wines that represent the very best of this property along with our Buyer for Spain, Simon
Field MW.
Pauillac or Pomerol? - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £125
Hosted by Rebecca Lamont, Head of Berrys’ Wine School
Pomerol and Pauillac are names are associated with richness, power, persistence of flavour and structure, conjuring
up beguiling notions of the ultimates that wine can offer in terms of cerebral satisfaction and pure drinking pleasure.
Both bear the name of the village where they were made and have a contrasting base of grape varieties, according to
local traditions and law.
Affordable wines from these villages are as rare as hens' teeth; Pomerols in particular, due to the commune’s small
size and high demand for its wines, are particuarly expensive and hard to come by, so most of us will have more
access to Pauillac than Pomerol. However we’ve managed to get our hands on a few of the slightly more affordable
gems from both (we will save the First Growths and Ch. Pétrus for another time!) so do join us for this chance to
savour some well-known and not so well-known classic examples from the middle ranges of each village and work out
if your predilection is for Pauillac or Pomerol.
Wines to be tasted:
Gaston Chiquet, Brut Tradition, Champagne
2010 Berrys' Pomerol, Ch. Feytit-Clinet, Pomerol
2009 Berrys' Pauillac, Ch. Lynch Bages, Pauillac
Morey, Gevrey & Chambolle - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £195
Hosted by Martin Hudson MW, Berrys’ Wine Education Specialist
A supersonic selection of beautiful Burgundy is on display tonight. Martin Hudson MW will be your informed guide
through these three communes, including their aspect, rock formations and other fascinating elements of their terroirs.
All three villages lie in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits, with Morey-St Denis between Chambolle and Gevrey.
Whilst Gevrey is considered the firmest and Chambolle the most fragrant, it can be difficult even for experts to find the
words to describe Morey.
Join Martin tonight to discover if you can put words to the stylistic threads which run through each commune. He will
talk in detail about the reasons for the subtly different characteristics, including the nuances which appear in those
vineyards near to the border of the next commune. If this is the kind of detail that excites you then this could well be
the tasting for you.
Wines to be tasted:
Decanting Taste-Off - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £65
Hosted by Rebecca Lamont, Head of Berrys’ Wine School
Decanting is a topic that seems to have a hold over us; we wonder when we should and when we shouldn’t. What is
the point of decanting, and can we taste the difference between a wine fresh from the bottle versus one decanted two
hours beforehand and also six hours beforehand? Is it an ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’ scenario, or does it really affect our
drinking pleasure?
It is an expensive experiment to do at home and maybe your dinner guests wouldn’t appreciate it anyway! So why
don’t you join our experiment and judge for yourselves? The emphasis will be on what tastes best, and no doubt we
will each have a different opinion. We will use four wines: a young premier cru Chablis, a red Bordeaux that is
considered still too tannic, a Rioja in middle-age that some may find too delicate for decanting, and finally a rich port
for good measure.
Wines to be tasted:
Berrys' Crémant de Limoux, Antech-Limoux, Limoux, Languedoc
2010 Chablis, Mont de Milieu, 1er Cru, J.P. & Benoit Droin, Burgundy
Winemaking: A Practical Guide to Red, Rosé & White - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £65
Hosted by Rebecca Lamont, Head of Berrys’ Wine School
Have you ever wondered what it is really like to be a winemaker, or what exactly the differences are between red, white
and rosé? Tonight winemaking expert William Maitland Biddulph from Wickham Winery in Hampshire, who has made
wine as far away as New Zealand and who also used to work for Berrys, will give us an insight into the world of a
winemaker. He will share with us how, what and why a winemaker thinks and does what he/she does with the options
that are available. Not only that, but he will be armed with demijohns, Berrys’ aprons, yeast, red and white grapes as
well as pressing equipment. Yes: you will be split into three groups and each group will be set a task to make wine so
we end up with Berrys’ brew of Red, White & Rosé!
This practical experience will grant you a new perspective which you can consider the next time you take a glug of your
favourite wine. There will also be a chance to taste the award-winning wines from Wickham from a selection of eight in
total, which William will have prepared earlier. This event will be limited to 14 persons attending and only the
adventurous need apply!
Rioja Rocks: Alavesa, Alta & Baja - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £95
Hosted by Simon Field MW, Berrys’ Spanish Buyer
If you are serious about Rioja, surely this is a must: a chance to understand the different areas within Rioja, known as
Alavesa, Alta and Baja. In the past our evenings on Spain have taken the form of a general introduction to the
country’s wines, or have focused on key winemakers. Tonight we will be treating this area with the same level of detail
as we do the Côte de Nuits. This really is a reflection of the growing awareness of top quality produced in Rioja and
your passion, as well as our own, to get inside the wines.
Traditionally Rioja was blended from grapes grown in all three regions and that practice still exists today, although there
are some top producers that experiment with different combinations. For instance, grapes for Allende’s wines are
sourced from Alta, and some are bottled from a single vineyard. Artadi are based in the Alavesa region and also have
single vineyards for their top wines. Palacios Riojas, as our third example, are grown in the Baja region. Simon Field
MW, our Buyer for Spain, will tonight be asking why and will share with you his sage thoughts on the ethos of
winemaking in Rioja from the top producers, showcasing a tremendous Rioja range.
The South and the South-West are considered separate wine regions in France. Each has its traditions, quirky
developments, grape varieties and blends. As wine knowledge increases, more and more wine lovers are turning the
Mourvèdre in the Spotlight - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £85
Hosted by Rebecca Lamont, Head of Berrys’ Wine School
Mourvèdre is building a reputation of late. We have come across a distinct (albeit small) group of fans amongst you in
the last year. In fact it has made us take a real look at this grape again, and we can’t think what has taken us so long
to devote a whole evening to it. Mourvèdre (known as Monastrell or Mataro in Spain) has so much to offer: great
tannins, full body, structure, flavours of rich red and black fruits and a smooth texture, which combine to create a
profile pleasing to many. So tonight is a study on who is growing this grape and where, and also who is blending it
with what. We belong to the ‘more Mourvèdre’ camp and are very excited about holding our first Mourvèdre tasting;
we hope you give it the thumbs up too.
An Introduction to En Primeur & The Bordeaux Market - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £65
Hosted by Rebecca Lamont, Head of Berrys’ Wine School
Special Guest: Mark Walford, Bordeaux Business Expert
Can you imagine a utopia of the wine world, where winemakers are free to concentrate on doing what they do best,
i.e. making their wine, and someone else does all the selling around the world? The collective system which the
Bordelais have organised amongst themselves for over a hundred years is just that. Come along tonight and learn
about courtiers and negociants, the middlemen who buy the stocks and sell to the world, including Berrys. It’s a
fascinating world and beggars belief at first hearing. Just another significant strand to make Bordeaux all the more
mesmerising! We will of course have some tasting too - a range of clarets from Ch. Gruaud Larose, Ch. Grand-Puy-
Lacoste, Ch. Haut-Bailly and Ch. Cantemerle to inspire more debate about these age-old traditions and the modernday
trends of ‘La Place’.
Fine Wine & Cheese with Paxton & Whitfield - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £75
This is a regular feature in our calendar and always enormous fun, with Berrys’ Director to the Chairman’s Office
around the world and choose dazzling wines to partner them. This will give you ideas for planning your cheeseboard
and also a chance to experiment with wines that are a little bit different from the usual ‘leftover red’. After a refreshing
glass of Champagne, we will put at your disposal the hundreds of years of combined expertise of Paxton & Whitfield
and Berry Bros. & Rudd; both companies hold Royal Warrants and share a similar rich heritage.
French Classics & New World Rivals - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £85
Hosted by Martin Hudson MW, Berrys’ Wine Education Specialist
Top New World wines have enjoyed great success over the last decade, and some have even dared to suggest that
they might rival the top wines of France. Whilst the theme of comparing the classics with their New World counterparts
is not a new concept by any means, it is nevertheless a popular one and so once again we pit New against Old. Who
is going to win? Will you vote entirely on one side or will it depend on each grape variety? We hope you will share your
preferences with host Martin Hudson MW as you go along. Fighting talk this evening!
Savouring Sauvignon - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £65
Hosted by Barbara Drew, Berrys’ Wine School Co-Ordinator
from locations as diverse as Chile, Argentina, Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Loire in France, New Zealand and South
Africa, Barbara will explain the comfort zone of this grape variety in terms of climate and give you the essential
characteristics that are shared amongst the varied set of examples. However the extra layer of fascination will be to
Old Vine Carignan - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £75
Hosted by Rebecca Lamont, Head of Berrys’ Wine School
Old-vine Carignan is showing signs of coming into vogue: cue a Berrys’ tasting before it gets too popular! In the past it
was frequently viewed as a grape variety to grow at high yields in hot regions; then came a movement to grub up these
vines and put an end to them. However one or two savvy grapegrowers have noticed that this wine can give superb
complexity from old vines with low yields, producing wines with red berry and liquorice notes, a superbly silky texture
and much more. Hence the beginning of a small trend: to hunt down remaining Old Vine Carignan. We thought it was
high time that we illustrated how many gorgeous wines are made using this grape variety. Please come along and
carry on with Old Vine Carignan!
The History of Château Mouton-Rothschild - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £595
Hosted by Martin Hudson MW, Berrys’ Wine Education Specialist
Join Martin Hudson MW for a study evening on Mouton, often considered the most flamboyant of the First Growths
and with a long and fascinating history. Vines first appeared on what is now known as the Ch. Mouton-Rothschild
estate in the early 18th century. Today the vineyard, comprising 75 hectares of mainly gravel-based soils, is planted to
80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. The production is split between
Mouton itself and the second wine, Le Petit Mouton, established in 1993. The wines have immense appeal, with
exotic, powerful aromas of cassis, minerals, tobacco leaf and graphite, backed by opulence on the palate and
impressive length on the finish. Martin Hudson will illustrate the fascinating history of this château through a line-up of
sensational vintages. A rare opportunity.
Wines to be tasted:
Krug, Grande Cuvée
The Diversity of Chardonnay - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £65
Hosted by Barbara Drew, Berrys’ Wine School Co-Ordinator
We are so familiar with Chardonnay, yet how well do we really know it? Chardonnays growing in hotter climates are
noticeably richer than those growing in a climate as cold as Chablis, France. Some producers love to use new oak,
others old oak and some stainless steel. Some Chardonnays are extremely expensive, such as a Puligny-Montrachet,
and others are incredibly good value considering their location, such as Pulenta from Mendoza in Argentina. Barbara
Drew plans to give you a full selection of ten to provide you with ‘all the colours of Chardonnay’ so that you can select
the style you like best and challenge anyone who says ‘anything but Chardonnay!’
Thursday 6th June TS0625
Sherry Showdown with Anne McHale - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £95
Hosted by Anne McHale, Berrys’ Wine Education Specialist
Come and cherry pick your favourite sherries at a shameless sherry showdown with Sherry Sheriff, Anne McHale, as
she aims to convert every last one of you to a Sherry fanatic in this tutored tasting on what is one of the world’s most
lamentably underrated fine wine regions. Anne will explain production techniques and showcase a wide range of
Sherry styles, from crisply delicate Manzanilla, fine Fino and bone-dry dark nutty Amontillado to smooth Oloroso and
richly raisined Pedro Ximénez. Not only will you leave with a better understanding of the incredible diversity of which
the Jerez region is capable, you will also find your taste buds very satisified as you taste a gorgeous array of Spanish
cheeses to match the wines. By the end we feel sure you will agree that Sherry is not just chic...it’s sherry-sational!
Hosted by Catherine Owen, Berrys’ Fine Wine Specialist
Catherine Owen makes a starring appearance as your host this evening for a bounty of wines from Southern Italy (with
mention as you taste the higher alcohol levels induced by the very ripe grapes used to make these wines, and the
discussion on the Mediterranean climate. Catherine will make this a very worthwhile evening; you will gain a sense of
achievement from learning where these areas lie in the south and what styles they are famous for, and will also
calibrate your palate as you tune it to this part of vinous utopia. A first for our programme that comes highly
Mark Pardoe MW, a gifted taster and communicator of what is in the glass and how it transcends your palate, has
chosen an evening of ‘big hitters’ that for him most definitely punch above their weight. There will be several elements
to the tasting: first of all he will consider how these wines taste in relation to the First Growth Ch. Latour; then he will
examine indications of commune characteristics and explanations of winemaking, and finally will approach how the
wines are developing. There will be the opportunity to take copious notes and ask lots of questions. A superb evening
Ribera del Duero - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £125
Hosted by Simon Field MW, Berrys’ Spanish Buyer
The wines of Spain are increasing in popularity year on year and demand for the best continues. Whilst in the past we
have held general tastings on Spain’s regions, or perhaps on Rioja, this is our first tasting completely devoted to Ribera
del Duero, a region long renowned for producing the iconic Vega Sicilia.
This property, with which we will end this evening, has been the leading light of the region. Slowly other properties
have begun to find themselves now much more established in the minds of appreciative wine lovers in this country.
There are of course different parts to Ribera, and Simon Field MW, our Buyer for Spain, will prepare a detailed
exposition on the key features of the region in terms of climate, topography and history, and will showcase the styles
and choices made by each featured producer. Please come along and participate in this evening of the Ribera del
Barolo & Barbaresco: Traditional Blends vs Modern Crus - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £95
Hosted by David Berry Green, Berrys’ Italian Buyer
Is there a difference between Barolo and Barbaresco, and if so, what should we expect? Does every winemaker use
the same recipe? Are some trying too hard, masking the identity of where the grapes were grown? Some of us may
have a grip on the fact that Nebbiolo is the noble grape in Piedmont and the key ingredient in our favourite Baroli and
Barbaresci, but David Berry Green (our Italian Buyer and eighth generation member of the Berry family) will develop
our understanding further by tackling these questions, demonstrating his opinions through specially selected flights.
Tone up and arrive fresh faced for twelve examples that will be the key to your understanding.
A Vertical of Ch. Palmer - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £395
Hosted by Martin Hudson MW, Berrys’ Wine Education Specialist
Ch. Palmer is named after a British officer, Major General Palmer, who settled in Bordeaux in 1814, and is the top
estate of the Margaux appellation after Château Margaux itself. Classified as a 3ème Cru Classé, it was established as
a Super Second long before Léoville-Las Cases, Ducru-Beaucaillou and Pichon-Lalande, and in some years (1961,
1966, and 1983 for example) it is as good as any wine in Bordeaux. Its relatively high Merlot content also makes it the
closest in style of any leading Médoc properties to the great wines of Pomerol and St Emilion. Join Martin Hudson MW
for a structured evening, learning about this Château and its wines, and a rare opportunity to taste a fantastic
selection of vintages side-by-side.
Austrian Peaks - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £85
Hosted by Mark Pardoe MW, Berrys’ Wine Tasting Specialist
Here at Berrys we continue to fly the flag for Austrian white wines, which in our opinion reach the very peak of
complexity that is possible in wine. The contributing factors are the high acidity, tingling minerality, delicate aromatics
and supreme elegance that are conferred on wines grown at high altitudes and on steep surfaces, in climates where
temperatures oscillate between warm days and cool nights in the growing season.
Mark Pardoe MW, our supremo speaker in Wine School tastings, is an ardent fan. Come and listen to him describe
the wines in innovative and highly evocative terms, that will transport you from the environs of the Pickering Cellar to
poetry beside the Danube, with the intensity heightened by the sensory satisfaction of tasting these nectars. There will
be at least one Riesling and Grüner Veltliner from an astonishing roll call of top producers: Weingut Prager, Weingut
Hirtzberger, Weingut Knoll, Weingut F X Picher, Weingut Bründlmayer. We have to say, this is the tasting of the year!
Friday 28th June TS0652
Barbara Drew from Berrys’ Wine School is becoming very passionate about teaching you about wine and really
showing, through her clever explanations, that wine is much more straightforward than rocket science. It just takes a
room of like-minded individuals to come together to share bottles for a whole new world of knowledge to unfold for all.
Tonight Barbara will be conducting an evening on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and also Merlot. This includes
a snapshot of Bordeaux, as this where is our three grape varieties from tonight are blended frequently. And of course
this practice has now been adopted in many parts of the New World as well. Barbara will have you blending your
wines in order to help you understand the process that takes place in the winery. All in the name of good fun and
learning...and let’s not forget tasting!
Up-and-Coming Spain: Bierzo, Navarra, Alicante, Valdeorras & Toro - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £65
Hosted by Rebecca Lamont, Head of Berrys’ Wine School
We are getting very into Spain here at Berrys and are watching its development into a fine wine country of note
excitedly. The variety, the value and the satisfaction as well as the distinctive tastes the wines offer are just some of
the reasons why. We have got to know Ribera del Duero and Rioja quite well in the past, and whilst our knowledge is
far from complete, we decided it was high time to focus more on lesser-known areas such as Bierzo, Navarra, Alicante,
Valdeorras, Cigales and Toro. This will include the chance to taste some unusual vareties such as Mencia, Mourvèdre
and Godello as well as the usual suspects of Tempranillo and Garnacha. If you too are inquisitive about everything that
Spain has to offer, then we hope to see you there.
Hosted by Martin Hudson MW, Berrys’ Wine Education Specialist
Master of Wine Martin Hudson splits his time between travelling to the great wine regions of the world and living at
the key wine areas which straddle France’s longest river. Through his immense passion and knowledge you will
discover how under-rated the wines from this region really are, and how their refreshingly high acidity and elegant
styles make them perfect for food-matching. Why not join the throng of Loire devotees tonight?
The Wines of Catalonia - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £75
Hosted by Martin Hudson MW, Berrys’ Wine Education Specialist
Martin Hudson MW will be your guide through both the French Catalan and Spanish Catalan districts tonight. These
include Priorat, Montsant, Penedes and Roussillon. Expect the wines to be mainly red, rich and soft from the
wonderful ripeness the grapes achieve in this sunny and arid climate. These regions are also distinguished by their
wide diurnal range of temperature, the cold nights reining in the grapes’ tendency to get otherwise over-ripe. Hopefully
our evening will radiate heat even if the British summer is below par. The evening will begin with a very chilled glass of
bubbles from the inimitable high altitude property, Gramona.
Wines to be tasted:
2007 Gramona, Brut Nature, Gran Reserva, Cava, Spain
The Wines from Grenache - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £65
Hosted by Barbara Drew, Berrys’ Wine School Co-Ordinator
Barbara Drew from Berrys’ Wine School will introduce a new theme for our tasting programme – the wines of
Grenache. She has a panoply at her disposal. The event will include wines from the Southern Rhône, Languedoc and
Roussillon, Priorat, Rioja and Australia. Altogether there will be ten wines to study. It should be a fascinating evening
and bring out some delicious, soft elegant wines with lots of comparison value; mainly red of course, but don’t
discount one or two rosés for good measure.
Wednesday 10th July TS0646
Old & New World Cabernet & Pinot Noir - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £65
Hosted by Barbara Drew, Berrys’ Wine School Co-ordinator
Barbara Drew will concentrate on just two grape varieties tonight: Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. She will discuss
the key characteristics of each and focus on how the taste, colour and structure changes according to whether they
have been grown in the New World or the Old World. As Old World Cabernet Sauvignon is often blended with other
grapes, no doubt Merlot will get a mention too. Barbara will show eight wines in the tasting and then have a further
flight of four for the conclusion. If you are curious about learning to distinguish wine tastes or even have some wine
studies on your agenda, this is the perfect evening for you.
Thursday 11th July TS0647
Spicy Gewürztraminer & Pinot Grigio - A Fine Wine Tutored Tasting £65
Hosted by Barbara Drew, Berrys’ Wine School Co-ordinator
Tonight, Barbara Drew from Berrys’ Wine School champions Gewürztraminer and Pinot Grigio. Gewürztraminer is most
definitely a ‘love it or hate it’ grape variety; it has an intense spiciness and fragrance, particularly in Alsace where
tonight’s examples will hail from. Barbara will showcase a range of styles from different producers, from drier to
sweeter. She will also discuss how we perceive sweetness on our palates and how our perceptions can be easily
swayed by the presence of acidity. The other part of the tasting will be devoted to Pinot Gris, as it is known in Alsace
and New Zealand, and Pinot Grigio as it is known in Italy. This is a grape variety made in a wide range of styles
dependent on its origin. The event will end with a small additional flight at the end so you can put your deciphering
