Our Mission
Catholic Charities is a nonprofit organization
which advances the charitable and social
mission of the Diocese of St. Cloud. We build
communities, promote family life, and enhance
human dignity by providing quality services to
meet the physical, social, emotional, and
spiritual needs of individuals and families of
all faiths and beliefs.

Looking back on 2008
is like watching a landmark
in the rearview mirror of
your car – it doesn’t fade but
rather, changes as you gain a
different perspective. That new
perspective yields a new
understanding of what you
just experienced.
As we’ve driven a few
miles into 2009, we look in
the rearview mirror and see the vastness of helping nearly 60,000
people. We can see the jumps in need weren’t irregularities. They are
a new level of need that you are helping us meet.
In this report, you’ll read a lot of numbers. But they don’t tell
the whole story. They don’t tell about hunger, homelessness and
loneliness. We can’t tell you about each of the 60,000 people we
helped this year, but it’s important not to forget them.
You might have heard me recount the story that one of our
volunteers shared about a three-year-old boy and his mom. They
came into the Emergency Services food shelf one afternoon and
waited for their turn to choose the food they needed. As they waited,
a volunteer walked by, and heard a strange gurgling
sound. Startled, she asked what it was. The little boy
said sheepishly, “It’s my tummy.” His mother explained
that they hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast the day
before.
The numbers are so large, but that little boy, he’s
so small, and he was hungry. I can’t imagine what it
was like for his mom, the night before, telling a tiny
child, “there’s nothing for supper.”
While we look at the vastness of what we do, we
must never lose sight of who we help.

A Day in the Life of Our
2:00 a.m. A Catholic Charities Adoption Program Counselor dresses quickly
and heads to the hospital. One of her clients is in labor.
4:00 a.m. A resident of a Catholic Charities Housing apartment wakes to go
to work. His pay isn’t much, but because of the sliding rent scale,
his family has a roof over their heads.
6:00 a.m. The first clients arrive at Catholic Charities Emergency Services
to wait in line. While the food shelf doesn’t open until 9 a.m., and
there is enough food for the 200 families who will need it today,
clients fear a food shortage.
8:00 a.m. Preschoolers stream into Catholic Charities Young Learners Program.
Each struggles with mental health issues that appear in their
behavior, but the program’s early intervention is designed to make
sure they become successful adults.
9:00 a.m. A staff member of Catholic Charities Hope Community Support program
arrives at a mentally ill client’s home, expecting to discuss resources
for housing assistance. Instead, the client is out of the critical
medication that keeps his mental health in balance. Change of
plans – off to the pharmacy.
10:00 a.m. A woman and her three children settle in to their temporary home at
Catholic Charities DOMUS Transitional Housing. After Mom’s
treatment for drug abuse, they are glad to be together, and to start fresh.
11:00 a.m. Volunteers arrive to set tables and deliver Meals on Wheels at over
50 Catholic Charities Senior Dining sites throughout Central Minnesota.
Noon “So this is what it feels like to eat at a table,” quips one of the
young people in Cottage Four at Catholic Charities St. Cloud
Children’s Home. The cottage family (young people and staff)
sits down to meals together so the youth learn to eat family-style.
1:00 p.m. Grandma Flo of the Foster Grandparent Program, sits down to
read with Anna, a second grader who’s been struggling with reading
comprehension and is worried about her dad in Iraq.

2:00 p.m. A Big Lake client of Catholic Charities Financial Counseling program
waits with her stomach in knots for the conference call with her
counselor and mortgage server to begin. By the end of the call, the
knots have loosened. Her family will avoid foreclosure.
3:00 p.m. Catholic Charities SILS/Waivered staff and a client who is
developmentally disabled sit at the kitchen table sorting
through mail and paying bills.
4:00 p.m. A Catholic Charities Support and Advocacy for Independent Living
(SAIL) group enters the grocery store in Monticello. Since many of
the young people will soon age out of the foster care system, they
are there to learn to plan a menu and shop within a budget.
5:00 p.m. A Catholic Charities Pregnancy Counselor meets a pregnant
woman again in a rural Douglas County church. The woman has
decided to parent her child, so they discuss resources for
providing medical care to the baby after it’s born.
6:00 p.m. Catholic Charities Caritas Mental Health Clinic staff begin
facilitating the Men’s Domestic Abuse Group. The men discuss
situations that trigger the emotions that lead them to abuse and
what to do when those emotions bubble up.
7:00 p.m. A grieving wife walks into Catholic Charities Life Transitions
Center in Sauk Rapids for a Widowed Persons Support Group. Just
entering the welcoming space gives her comfort.
8:00 p.m. A student at Catholic Charities Intensive Treatment Unit in Fergus
Falls asks staff to take him to the timeout area. For over 30 minutes, he
describes his struggle with sadness and his doubts that he can change.
10:00 p.m. A resident with physical disabilities of Catholic Charities CAHI
Home heads back to Paynesville in the home’s van after a concert.
He is so grateful to have been able to use the tickets he won.
Midnight The manager of Catholic Charities Mother Teresa Home in Cold
Spring sits at the hospital bedside of a dying resident. The grief in
losing a family member overcomes him and he prays for comfort.

ohn McDowall has a unique perspective on Catholic Charities.
For seven years, the McDowall Company was located across the street from
Catholic Charities Emergency Services. “They were our neighbors, I could see first hand
the need, and people flooding in.”
John saw other local businesses helping and felt he could too. John graciously
shared his parking lot with those who came to Emergency Services at Christmas and
stored out-of season clothing in one of his outbuildings. “People do not realize how much
poverty is in our area.”
He says his vast civic involvement has roots in his
family. “I learned from my father and grandmother, and
I’m passing on to my sons what I was taught.”
John feels strongly that he is a part of the Central
Minnesota Community, and is teaching his sons, who
joined him in the family business, the McDowall Company,
that community is important. “We’re a fourth-generation
family-owned company,” John said. “The community has
been wonderful to us.”

Helps Neighbors in Need
help. In 2005, John’s tour of Catholic Charities St. Cloud Children’s Home resulted
in an effort to help the young people learn to do their own laundry. He and several
other local contractors purchased washing machines and dryers for the cottages.
John saw his donation not only as a tool for teaching, but as a tribute to Sister Ida
Bursch, who for decades had done the children’s laundry.
“Tours have been a great way for us to see what’s going on at Catholic Charities.”
Today, John is a member of Catholic Charities Circle of Hope Society, pledging to
consistently support our mission year after year.
Of his commitment, John simply says, “We couldn’t be more proud.”
