We are vision builders with a passion for the world that we
hope for—one in which each person has the chance to be
acknowledged for their gifts, to be valued and included despite
any difference in ability, and to be productive members of
society. With each class that completes Pre-K and moves on to
Kindergarten and with each adult with disabilities who enters
the work force, we are one step closer to that profound reality.
she would probably never walk or talk. However, as a result of early intervention
OUR CHILDREN
Regardless of ability level, all children have
unique needs and benefi t from being in a
supportive, challenging, and stimulating
environment with instruction that addresses their
individual needs; that is our commitment to the
families who entrust their children to our care.
We strive to see each child as a unique individual,
to care deeply about them, and to give them what
they need to grow and be successful in life, which
includes being ready for school.
The fundamental aim of our child development
program is to empower children to become
enthusiastic, confi dent, life-long learners, but
our mission doesn’t stop there. We also want our
children to grow up to be caring individuals who
Inclusion Specialist Charlie Jones enjoys a book
together with 3-year-old Ryan.
do not use differences to separate people but rather
who live inclusively, accepting and appreciating
each person for their unique gifts and embracing
every opportunity to learn from one another.
OUR ADULTS
The Frazer Center is not a place for people with disabilities to be hidden,
sheltered, or protected. Instead, it is a place where adults with a variety of
abilities gather together to learn and to fl ourish with the ultimate goal of
full integration into the broader community. Each day is fi lled with education, work
training, and recreation opportunities that allow the adult participants to develop
their life skills, discover and pursue their own interests, and participate in real
world experiences that equip them to be valuable contributors to the community.
With the help of our Employment Specialist and Job Coaches, many of our adult
participants work at local businesses or in jobs around the Frazer Center campus.
They are also actively involved in operating several different micro-enterprises and
volunteering with other worthy causes like the Atlanta Hospital Hospitality House,
Project Open Hand, and Meals on Wheels.
Adult participant Nicole Moran creates custom
jewelry as part of Frazer Bling, one of the adult
program’s micro-enterprises.
Semena enjoys some time on the playground with one of her
young charges, Ella. “I love working with the children at the
Frazer Center,” she said. “We have such a good time together.”
GROWING TOGETHER
Around the Center, we have a commitment
to live out the inclusive values we promote,
which informs our intentionality in
integrating our two programs. The children and
adults have a variety of opportunities to interact
with each other throughout the day and as a result,
deep bonds develop between them. A palpable
spirit of community and camaraderie emerges, as
well. There’s a shared, quiet understanding that
it takes all of us working together to make the
Frazer Center the special place that it is.
Semena Redding is a shining example of our
inclusive practices around the Center. Semena
came to the Frazer Center as part of our supported
employment program and began working in our
Pre-K classes as a Classroom Assistant over six
years ago. She assists the children in the classroom
with whatever they need to be successful. She
is extremely dedicated and constantly seeks to
improve herself. In fact, when the opportunity
presented itself, she took the initiative to get her
Child Development Associate (CDA) credential
and inspired others to do the same. As a result of
her leadership, 80% of all of the adult participants
who work in the Child Development Program
hold the CDA credential.
Katherine Tenner is part of a team of adult participants
who read to the children’s classes on a monthly basis.
Katherine selected one of her own favorite books to
share with her young friends.
“
OUR VOLUNTEERS
Our volunteers are our heroes. We
could not accomplish our mission
without their contribution of time and
talent. Any day of the week, volunteers can be
found somewhere on our campus helping out –
weeding and planting in the garden, assisting
Grandma Catherine, one of the Frazer Center’s
foster grandparents, works with 4-year-old Julian
to construct a structure with LEGO toys. Grandma
Catherine has been assisting children and teachers at
the Frazer Center for more than 12 years.
with technology, building fences and walkways,
rocking babies, playing on the playground, taking
nature walks with the adults – the list is endless.
There’s a place and job for anyone who wants
to help and most will attest, it doesn’t take long
for our volunteers to feel like part of the family.
A common refrain that we hear from our volunteers
is, “The Frazer Center is a place that changes you.”
People often come here thinking they’re going
to give some time to make a difference in the
lives of the adults and children we serve, and
fi nd that they themselves are the ones who are
changed by the experience. One such volunteer
is Jeff Gleason, an IT professional who came to
the Frazer Center in July 2011 after experiencing
a job layoff. He ended up volunteering every day
for over a year assisting us with technology needs
around the Center.
When I was looking for a volunteer opportunity, I thought of the Frazer Center because I have a daughter with Down
syndrome who will need a place to go after she graduates from high school. I hoped I would fi nd a program that
would improve the quality of life for my daughter and others with special needs. What I found was that and much
more. I found a community of care that embraces our uniqueness and leverages our differences to enhance the
lives of everyone in the community. Whatever I have given to the Frazer Center has been returned to me ten-fold.
THE GARDENS
The Frazer Center is the privileged steward of 39 acres of beautiful and
important green space in an historic neighborhood of urban Atlanta. Our
grounds include an old grove forest, walking trails, natural streams, and
the beautiful Cator Woolford Gardens. We take our responsibility to care for these
special spaces seriously and work together with numerous partners to ensure that
they can be enjoyed by everyone who enters our gates. The Forest and the Gardens
also serve as teaching tools for the children and adults. They take nature walks
to learn about trees and plants in the forest, grow vegetables and fl owers, study
butterfl ies, raise bees, and learn about how eco-systems work.
For many, their fi rst encounter with the Frazer Center is in the Cator Woolford
Gardens. We often hear that people got married in the Gardens or attended a wedding
or special event but had no idea that the event had a connection to and an impact
on the lives of those we serve at the top of the
hill. Revenue generated from every event that is
held in the Cator Woolford Gardens helps us to
maintain the Gardens for everyone’s enjoyment
and supports the inclusive programs for children
and adults at the Frazer Center.
Brennen Dicker fi rst became acquainted with the
Frazer Center when he and his wife Kelly were married
in the Cator Woolford Gardens. A few years later, they
became one of our families in a new way when their
daughter Alexandra was born and enrolled in our
children’s program. Now their daughter Stella has
joined us, too, and Brennan gives back by serving as a
member of the Board of Directors.
“
Dear Friends and Associates of the Frazer Center,
Something remarkable is happening here at the Frazer Center – it is the beginning of a
new chapter in the life of this 63-year-old organization. You can see it in the faces of the
children and the adults whom we serve; you can hear it in the stories of our families, our
staff members, and our volunteers; and you can feel it in the groundswell of support
from the many folks who have been inspired by the possibilities that the future holds for
everyone who gathers at the Frazer Center to learn and fl ourish.
We hope you, too, will be inspired to join us on this journey to a new day where everyone
experiences true inclusion. While there are thousands of great causes that need our help,
for the members of the Board and me, this one is personal. We do this work because of
those we love, because of the kind of community to which we believe every person is
entitled, and because of the kind of world we long for. We are deeply grateful for our
families, our staff, our volunteers, and our supporters, and we invite you to come gather
with us, learn with us, and fl ourish together with us.
Thanks,
Trace Haythorn
Executive Director
This is an exciting time for the Frazer Center, and a time of change. Our Board refl ects this – we have a blend of
long-standing and new members from across Atlanta that have a variety of experiences and diverse backgrounds,
families, and careers. Each Board member is passionate about our Mission, as we all have an emotional connection
to the Center. We are all looking forward to working together in building on the hard work done by past Boards
as we forge a fl ourishing future for the Center and our constituents. Ad astra.
