Edition
The Immeasurable Value of Travel
We are born with five senses: sight, smell,
taste, touch and hearing. We use these senses
every day to make sense of the world around
us, to appreciate beauty, and to experience the
vastness of life. If we were to write the story
of our lives in terms of the sensory experiences
that we have had, we might start by writing
about what it was like to have ice cream on
that summer day, or how the sunset looked as
it set on the lake, or the sound the ocean makes.
We might remember the smell of the stadium,
or the feel of Parisian streets, or the look of
Canadian soil in France, or the stillness of the
Commonwealth War Cemetery at Tyne Cot.
Over the past several weeks, many fortunate
students have been given the chance to explore
their senses as they visited various areas of the
old country. They have read about the trenches
in our classrooms, but now they got to feel what
it was like to walk in them. We told them about
Spanish culture, but now they got to taste the
food, in Madrid, in the Bernabéu stadium. The
sights of Paris, so often viewed on a postcard,
were seen from the top of the Eiffel tower. It’s
not possible to accurately describe what it is
like to hear sounds of Amsterdam after dark, or
the crunch of the pebbles beneath your feet at
Dieppe; it must be experienced and there is only
one way to do that.
We live in a world that seems to shrink almost
daily under the weight of technology and
communication. We live in a world where the
sense of mystery and wonder has been replaced
by a search on Google. But what technology
cannot replace, and will not ever replace, is
the experience of living. There is nothing like
travelling to new places to appreciate just how
vast and different and wonderful our world
really is. There is nothing like living
in another country to appreciate a
new culture, but also to rediscover
the wonders of our own. These
senses we have help us tell the story
of our lives to ourselves; they help
us to remember the journey we have
been on; such as the way the sun felt
on our shoulders as we got off the
coach on our first day in Europe, or
the sights of the French countryside,
the delicate flavor of crepes on our
tongues, or the sound of hooves on
the dirt as the bull charged. These are
things that will live with us until our
long days on this earth grow short and
all we are left with are our memories
of a life well lived.
Our students sit in their desks and learn
and work and experience amazing things
in the school setting, but we travel so
that they may experience life with all of
their senses in full alert. It has been a
privilege to share these experiences with
our wonderful students.
- Mr. Lupton
Our Grade Twelves Travel Europe
Our journey began on March 21,
2012 as many of the Grade 12
students arrived at the jade statue
in the Vancouver airport. We were
all nervous and anxious to be
on our way to the many planned
destinations such as Amsterdam,
Paris and the Normandy region.
When we first arrived at the
Amsterdam airport we began our
travel right away by embarking
on a massive walking tour of
Amsterdam. Even though we had
been awake for over 24 hours, the
tour introduced us to many of the
wonder of the ‘Venice” of the north.
The two nights that we spend in
Amsterdam were extraordinary: we
went to many of the tourist attractions
such as visiting the Anne Frank
museum, the Jewish Museum, the red
light district, the Van Gogh museum,
and Rembrandt square. We were also
able to fit in a little shopping when
given the chance.
From Amsterdam we headed to
Lille where we got to witness the
eye opening Flanders Fields and
many different cemeteries; they are
hauntingly beautiful and made us all
appreciate even more the sacrifices
that were made for us all. We also
had the opportunity to visit some
of the very famous battlefields that
Canadians fought so bravely on
in such conflicts as Vimy ridge,
Passchendaele, Dieppe, and the
Somme. We walked around in some
of the trenches that many Canadian
soldiers would have crawled and
the tunnels that they took on the eve
of the battle. It was a very sobering
experience.
From Lille we headed to Caen in
where we got to see William the
Conqueror’s castle, the Pegasus
Bridge, and the Bayeux tapestry.
While in Bayeux we all got a sharp
lesson on personal safety, as we
were temporarily pick-pocketed
as we strolled down the street.
Fortunately the crisis was averted
through our very ‘diplomatic’
actions as we chased the thief down.
From Caen we went to Paris, our
final destination, which is one of the
most beautiful places we have ever
seen. We had a coach tour around
Paris in which we saw many of the
sights, such as the Louvre, Arc de
Triumph, and the Champs-Élysées.
Twelves Travel Europe
continued from page 2
We also got the opportunity to visit the very famous and
large palace of Versailles and explore the massive gardens
and see how the French Royalty lived.
But the highlight of the trip would have to be the scavenger
hunt around Paris in which we had to do various tasks and
at the end meet under the Eiffel tower. We were lucky
enough to see it illumined under the night sky.
During the trip many of us boys gave Mr. Lupton a hard
time both at Juno beach and at the Eiffel tower; I will say
that it is a good thing it was nine of us versus one of him!
I think I speak for all of the Grads when I say thank you to
our parents, to Mr. Lupton, Mr. Scholefield, Ms. Wright,
and to Southpointe for giving us this opportunity. It was
the trip of a lifetime and one we will never forget!
Les élèves de français 10 en France
Grudgingly, all of us students, along
with Monsieur Lum and Madame
Common woke up on the cold
morning of March the 6th and met
up at YVR. Soon, we were looking
sharp and eagerly anticipating our
trip. We were on our way to France!
We quickly said our farewells to Mr.
Baldwin and our parents and off we
were on our adventurous journey.
The flight from Vancouver through
Calgary and Frankfurt was an
experience in itself. Due to delay’s in
the flights we were rushing through
the airports while laughing and
dragging our suitcases behind us.
Fortunately we successfully made
all our connections with minutes to
spare.
We arrived at the school all excited
to meet our correspondents and home
stay families. We adjusted quickly to
the French traditional greetings (a
kiss on both cheeks). We said goodbyes
to our classmates and teachers
and “bonjour” to our new families
and friends.
The following days, we had classes
with our homestays at their school,
visited the many museums and
historical monuments of Lyon such as
basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière,
The Roman-era Theatre, Bartholdi
Fountain at the Place des Terreaux,
Perrouges, and of course we gladly
embraced the French culture that we
were exposed to.
Finally, on the 10th we departed for the
highly anticipated PARIS portion of the
trip with our French correspondants !!
Taking the TGV from Lyon to Paris we
reached 320km/h! Once we set foot in
Paris, we visited The Louvre, the best
ranked and visited museum in the world,
Montmartre Basilique du Sacré-Cœur,
la Place de la Concorde, l’Avenue des
Champs-Elysées, l’Arc de Triomphe,
l’Hôtel de Ville de Paris and of course la
TOUR EIFFEL! In between, all of these
events we bonded with our homestays,
ate MANY Nutella Crepes, croissants
and not to mention the Bueno Chocolate,
improved our French and fell in love
with France. The last day in Paris, we
visited Euro Disney and simply had a
great time.
The last week in Lyon, we came
out of our comfort zones during the
high ropes courses, we again went to
classes with our homestays, we sat
through Russian, German, Math and
lastly PE with the French students.
Playing soccer and volleyball against
them was not only exciting, but
we felt as if there was no language
barrier between us, and we felt as if
we were a part of their school. Sadly,
we had to leave for home. Some
of us, were happy to return to our
families, while others departed with
many tears. Overall, the experience
was amazingly planned, and all 19 of
us will never forget our overseas trip
to France - ever!
Los estudiantes de español en España
When asked to talk about our recent
Grade 10 trip to Spain I usually find
myself lost for words, because it was
a breathtaking experience. All of the
students truly got immersed in the
Spanish culture - everything from
classic architecture to bull fighting.
No matter how much you travel or
for how long, planes never become
entertaining. The flight from
Vancouver to London, if you’re
lucky, is about nine hours long, then
there is another two and a half hour
flight from London to Madrid, and
then we drove about another two
hours to the city of Valladolid, where
we stayed with our sister school.
Homestay life and Spanish culture
is not too different from Canada.
Really, the only odd thing I noticed
is that they eat their cereal out of
cups as opposed to bowls! On top
of this, they usually eat dinner at 10
or 11 p.m. every night, and that’s on
weekdays. On a weekend, you can
eat at midnight, maybe even later!
The bull fighting had to be the most
exciting part of the whole trip.
Your heart is thumping, you have
an adrenaline rush, and there is a
400-pound animal with horns chasing
you around a pen - exhilarating to say
the least! (Note from Señora Clarke:
the bull was NOT 400 pounds - it was
a baby.)
Although nearing the end of the
trip most of us were getting tired of
Our Grade Tens
with their Spanish
homestay students
seeing so many cathedrals, there is no
denying their beauty. Most of the time
you would look at just the façade and
think, “Wow, humans actually built that,
with no technology whatsoever”. They
were magnificent.
I felt very lucky: I got to see my
best friends and favorite teachers
everyday for two weeks. Being
so close increases your sense of
camaraderie. You get to know things
you didn’t already know about even
your best of friends. Being a person
of the male persuasion, I enjoy all
things food. Which basically means
Spain is about equivalent to heaven.
Never before have I been exposed to
so much good food. It doesn’t really
matter where you go, there’s no such
thing as a bad place to eat.
Wherever you go in Spain, there
are Real Madrid flags and jerseys
everywhere you look. And we were
fortunate enough to be able to go to a
game: Real Madrid versus Moscow.
The stadium itself was so large and
expansive it almost looked fake. We
might not have had the best seats but
we were in the stadium and that’s
really all that matters. Real Madrid
ended up victorious, which finished
our trip off on a very high note.
On the whole, this trip was excellent.
I saw amazing sights, had unique
experiences, and it brought me
closer to my peers and especially my
teachers. I couldn’t have asked for
anything more.
Super Southpointe Speller
Nerves were tense as 49 young people
took their places on stage at the Chan
Centre at UBC. They were there for the
Vancouver Sun Regional Spelling Bee.
The stakes were high. In the end only
one of them would take home a $5000
prize and go to Toronto at the end of
March to take part in the Postmedia
Canspell National Spelling Bee.
Representing Southpointe was Himani
Bansal, sitting on the front right of the
stage.
After going over the rules it was time to
spell. One by one the spellers stepped
up to the microphone and received
their word. Then it was, “Can I have
the meaning of that word, please? Can
I have the origin that word, please? Is
there another pronunciation for that
word?...” After about 11 spellers it was
Himani’s turn. First word – no problem.
So it went round after round. As some
students heard the fateful sound of the
bell, the crowd began to thin. Finally in
round four it was Himani’s turn again.
Help Out HONK!
We are looking for three chairs from IKEA like the
one in the picture. We need them for our production
of HONK! that opens on May 16th. If there are any
families that have one of these and would be willing
to lend it to us, we would be greatly appreciative.
Please contact Mr. Kean at greg.kean@spacademy.
ca if you can help.
The word was Schnauzer. (Are they
allowed to put a German word in an
English spelling bee?!) After Himani
spelled this word she too heard the
dreaded bell. Later she would say that
it was a careless error in a word that
she could have easily spelled under
other circumstances. Adding to her
frustration was the fact that sitting
back stage, she realized she could have
easily spelled every other word in that
round. Still, Himani should be proud.
She not only made it to the regional
finals, but she made it further than
Thanks.
other contestants were super helpful
and friendly, she wasn’t as nervous
on stage as she thought she would be,
and making eye contact with her dad
in the crowd helped calm her nerves.
After sitting in the audience myself,
Spring Sports Update
Ultimate
Ultimate Frisbee season is here!
Chances are you have stood on a beach and thrown a
Frisbee once or twice in your life, but did you know there
was a sport associated with that little flying disc? Ultimate
Frisbee was invented at a high school in New Jersey in
1968. It has grown in popularity and now has high-level
teams competing each year in the World Games. Most
major cities in North America have ultimate leagues; and
high schools and universities have followed suit. This year
is the first time that Lower Mainland Independent Schools
have their own ultimate league (LMISUL). Ten different
schools are competing in games and tournaments that will
run throughout the spring sports season.
But what is this sport with the goofy name all about?
Ultimate is a non-contact sport played by two co-ed teams
of seven players. A goal is scored when a player catches the
Track & Field
Attention all Titans athletes!
With Basketball and Volleyball seasons over, there are
still many opportunities for you to improve your skills and
help prepare for next year’s seasons. Did you know that
a basketball lay-up uses the same steps as those you take
for an approach in high jump? Similarly, the arm action
in a javelin throw is the same as that in a baseball throw.
By joining the Track and Field team you can work on
improving your running, jumping and throwing skills; the
three most important fundamental movement skills which
are the foundations for all sports. The Titans Track and
Field teams for both senior (Gr. 8-12) and elementary (Gr.
3-7) ages are just getting underway and it is never too late
to join. For more information please speak with Ms. Wright
or Mr. Simpson directly. Hope to see you out on the track!
Frisbee (in the world of Ultimate it’s called “the disc”) in
the end zone. The game is played on a soccer-sized field,
and any of our players will tell you that this means a lot of
running is involved! However, players may not run while
holding the disc, so the play is advanced by passing it to
other players up the field. An incomplete pass results in a
turnover, and the other team gains possession. Games last
an average of an hour, or until one team reaches 15 points.
You might be surprised to learn that there are no referees
in Ultimate. The game was founded on a spirit of
sportsmanship that requires each player to be responsible
for their own actions and fair play.
It may seem impossible that players would call fouls on
themselves, but they do, and it works! The result is a game
that can be highly competitive, but also fun, spirited and
mutually respectful.
The Southpointe Titans played their first-ever league game
this week against Carver Christian - a team that was older
and more experienced. They worked hard and managed to
exceed the team goal and had a great time doing so!
Everyone is encouraged to come out and support the team
at our next “home” game at Holly Park on Thursday, April
26th at 3:30pm. And if you are curious to try it for yourself,
come out to a Tuesday or Thursday practice afterschool. The
team is open to Grades 8-10 this year, and will hopefully
expand to include a senior team next season!
we were all bubbling with excitement.
The Reading Link Challenge started
with the host talking for a bit and then
the Quizmaster explained the rules. The
challenge had started. The first, second
and third rounds went quite swiftly.
The host and quizmaster thought there
was a winner, but then they announced
that there would be a tie-breaker round.
After the tie-breaker round, there was
still no winner, so it went to sudden
death. After only 1 question, a winner
had been decided. Our muscles
tightened and we hoped and prayed.
When we heard “2nd place goes
to…..the Book Brains!” we shrieked
with joy.
Even though we weren’t 1st place, we
are all still very proud that we even
made it this far.
Once Upon A Time Theme Day will take place next week on Thursday, April 12th. All students are
encouraged to participate. Bring in $2.00 so you can “dress up as a fairy tale character OR you can simply
choose to wear the colours of the rainbow” on this day. As any fairy tale, we can dare to dream, so let’s
all make a wish! Each student who participates will have his or her name entered in a draw. One lucky
student will win a free Gala ticket for their parent or a friend to attend. We hope to see a kaleidoscope of
colour and wonder as our fairy tale characters come to life. The King and Queen will also be present to
“royally” thank all students for participating. The money received will go towards a unique prize for our
Heads and Tails Game on the evening of the Gala.
cash or your time so that together we can exceed our goal to give our children the best opportunities in
relation to their education.
If you have any questions regarding the auction part of the gala, please contact Amanda Da Silva at
amanda.dasilva@spacademy.ca. Looking forward to seeing you all on April 21!
