Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m., Young 101. David Callahan has written<br />
extensively about American history, business, and public policy.<br />
He is author of The Cheating Culture: Why More Americans Are<br />
Doing Wrong to Get Ahead (Harcourt, Jan. 2004). The Cheating<br />
Culture has been the subject of a charged national conversation<br />
since its publication. In speaking appearances around the country,<br />
Callahan engages audiences in this important conversation. An<br />
inspiring, passionate speaker, he challenges listeners to ask themselves<br />
hard moral questions and offers solutions to the growing<br />
pressure to succeed at any cost.<br />
Sept. 19 at 8 p.m., Young 101. Judges and the Constitution:<br />
Current Controversies. A panel discussion which will include<br />
Judge Pierce Lively and Prof. Larry Matheny. Judge Lively will give<br />
some general background concerning the Constitution and the<br />
problems associated with judicial interpretation of this fundamental<br />
document. Prof. Matheny will discuss the question of judicial<br />
appointments, and especially the current controversy surrounding<br />
the role of the Senate in the confirmation process.<br />

Deutschklub organizational meeting Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the<br />
bench area in front of Sutcliffe and Old Carnegie (in case of rain<br />
the location will be Davidson Room in Old Carnegie). Everyone<br />
interested in the culture and language of German-speaking countries<br />
is invited to attend. No knowledge of German is expected!<br />

International film series (all films shown in the Vahlkamp<br />
Theater located in the basement of Crounse).<br />
Sept. 27, 7 p.m., Moolaadé. Directed by Senegalese master<br />
Sembene Ousmane. This 2004 film (in Jula and French with<br />
English subtitles) takes place in Burkina Faso, where a woman<br />
challenges the local practice of female circumcision by offering<br />
sanctuary to young girls about to undergo the practice. A discussion<br />
led by Prof. Lori Hartmann-Mahmud will follow the showing.<br />
Oct. 4, 7 p.m., Head-On. Directed by up-and-coming director<br />
Fatih Akin, this 2004 film (in German, Turkish, and English with<br />
English subtitles) tells a peculiar love story that takes place within<br />
the Turkish-German community of Hamburg.<br />
Oct. 11, 7 p.m., Together. Directed by Lukas Moodysson, this<br />
2001 film (in Swedish with English subtitles) is a comedy about<br />
commune life in 1970s Stockholm.<br />
Oct. 18, 7 p.m. The Fast Runner. Directed by Zacharias Kunuk,<br />
this 2000 film (in Inuktitut with English subtitles) is the breathtaking<br />
retelling of the ancient Inuit tale of the Fast Runner who<br />
defies the hierarchy of his community and must struggle to restore<br />
it to balance.<br />

Wondering what to do after your senior year? Consider applying<br />
for a Fulbright Fellowship. Fulbrights are for study abroad for one<br />
year after graduation. They are available in any area and in almost<br />
any country. There are also Fulbrights available in some countries<br />
for teaching English. The fellowship pays for all of your expenses<br />
and provides a stipend. These are highly competitive awards, so a<br />
GPA of at least 3.2 is recommended. For more information, see<br />

deadline is Oct. 3. These awards are for seniors only, although students<br />

The ideaFestival Institute is now accepting applications for its<br />
fall Filmmakers Lab to be held Oct. 13-16 in Louisvillle, Ky.<br />
Learn screenwriting and production through interactive sessions,<br />
panel discussions and hands-on learning experiences, participants<br />
will gain an overview and solid understanding of the critical elements<br />
involved in successful film development and production.<br />
Participants will explore directing, shooting, editing, etc. and collaborate<br />
to design and shoot a short film. A team of experienced<br />
film industry professionals will lead and work with the participants<br />
and teams to successfully complete their production. Working<br />
screenwriters and instructors from the University Of Southern<br />
California School Of Cinema and Television will guide participants<br />
to explore and work through all of the critical elements<br />
involved in writing a successful screenplay. Interactive discussions,<br />
scene reviews and writing sessions round out the workshop. For further<br />
