Although no-one has yet had the brass to actually say it to
him, as he’s been driving-in to Marham and walking around
the Station, he’s seen the puzzled look on our faces: ‘Who is
that other Group Captain that is here rather a lot lately? He’s
not the Station Commander (and he is much better looking)
and doesn’t wear Combat Soldier 95 (CS95) when we do,
so what’s he doing here?’ Well, all is about to be revealed.
He is Group Captain
Andy Read, the
Tornado Project
Team Leader.
As he belongs to Defence
Equipment & Support (DE&S),
his post is officially at MoD
Abbey Wood in Bristol but
the larger part of his team
relocated to RAF Marham on
the 31st of May and he now
splits his time roughly 50:50
between the two locations.
But why, then, did the
Tornado Project Team come to
Marham? Simply, to work more
closely with BAE Systems to
deliver engineering and logistic
support to the Front Line more
MARHAM MATTERS issuE 8
effectively and efficiently. One
of the key roles of the Project
Team is to convert the Front
Line’s engineering and logistic
needs into tasks and services
which can be contracted with
Industry, and the Project Team is
here only because BAE Systems
is at Marham. And why is BAE
Systems here? Well, that’s
because, a number of years
ago, the RAF decided upon
a strategy of ‘rolled forward’
engineering and logistic support
for its fast jet aircraft whereby
deep maintenance and large
upgrades would be combined
(hence, ‘combined maintenance
and upgrade – CMU’) and moved
to each aircraft’s principal main
operating base in order to create
a logistic ‘centre of gravity’ for
each type: Marham for Tornado
GR4, Leeming for F3, Cottesmore
for Harrier, Coningsby for
Typhoon and Valley for Hawk.
Although the F3 and Harrier
have since gone out of service,
this strategy remains in place.
For many years now, Number
1 Group, DE&S and BAE
Systems have had a Partnering
Agreement in place for Tornado
support which drives all three
parties to work together as a
team, recognising that although
the first two parties belong
to the MoD and the third is a
contractor they are in reality
highly interdependent and
cannot operate in isolation or at
‘arms length’ from one another.
Elements of Number 1 Group
moved forward to Marham
some years ago and are now in
the Force Operations Centre.
Accordingly, the Project Team
has had an aspiration for some
years to relocate itself to RAF
Marham, and this has come
to fruition only recently.
Not all of the Project Team
came to Marham, though; it
exists within a much larger team
which is known as the Fast Air
Support Team (FAST) and is
based at MoD Abbey Wood, the
Many of Andy’s
team are civil
servants; they
might look like
contractors but
they are MoD
employees and
they are being
provided with
some nifty namebadges
to make
this distinction
more obvious.
headquarters of DE&S. FAST
was originally devised to bring
together the Tornado, Typhoon
and Harrier project teams, and
the centralised part of FAST and
all the project team leaders are
based at Abbey Wood. Andy
also has a small part of his
own team based with him at
Abbey Wood which manages
the Tornado GR4 Capability
Upgrade and Sustainment
Programme; this will eventually
deliver into the GR4 Force an
improved secure comms system
and a tactical data-link system.
Andy also has elements of his
team based at BAE Systems
Warton, Rolls Royce Filton,
RAF Boscombe Down and one
post at RAF Lossiemouth.
Many of Andy’s team are civil
servants; they might look like
contractors but they are MoD
employees and they are being
provided with some nifty name-
badges to make this distinction
more obvious. Andy also
employs a number of RAF staff,
nearly all of whom are RAF
Engineer Officers, and these are
the people seen wearing RAF
Number 2 working dress (and
will soon be wearing those nifty
badges too) when everyone else
at Marham has changed into
CS95; this is because Andy’s
team is not part of the GR4
Force and does not come under
the command of Number 1
Group although, being a ‘lodger
unit’, it must still abide by the
Station’s standing orders.
The Project Team’s
relationship with Depth Wing
at RAF Marham is somewhat
complex and deserves a
separate article. Suffice it to
say here that Depth could best
be described as a joint venture
between Number 1 Group and
BAE Systems, and that the
Project Team acts as an agent
to help make this arrangement
work. In particular, the Project
Team is the contracting
authority; it tasks BAE Systems
and pays for its services.
So, the ‘other one’ is Group
Captain Andy Read and you
can expect to see him at
Marham about half the time.
IN WItH tHE NEW!
WriTTEn By: Padre Phil Corrigan
I may not look too new, but I am!! Having worked
for twenty years in parish ministry I took the
decision to join the RAF in February 2010.
I
have been married to my
wife Jackie for nearly thirty
years and we have three
grown up children, a son
and two daughters. Having
completed three months training
at RAF College Cranwell, I was
posted to RAF Brize Norton.
I have been at Marham for
just over two weeks and am
looking forward to meeting
as many of you as possible.
One of the things that struck
me as we moved from our home
in Northern Ireland to Brize
Norton was the large number
of cardboard boxes it took to
hold all our things. As my dear
wife did all the packing in my
absence, (I assured her that I was
doing my share of the hard work
at Cranwell), I had no idea what
could be in all these boxes, did we
really need all these things?
Now I know better than to
question the number of boxes
that were marked for my wife’s
wardrobe but all the rest needed
a bit of scrutiny! Tools I never use,
books; read, half read, never read,
clothes for a much thinner me and
VISIt: www.maRhammattERsonlinE.co.uk
on it went. I could hardly believe
the amount of excess stuff that
we had, which we never used.
It occurred to me that all we
were doing was carting around
unnecessary baggage, so I took
the bold step and got rid of all
the excess baggage. Funny
thing is I haven’t needed or
missed any of it!
We tend to do this on a
personal level as well, we
gather up baggage we don’t
need and haul it around with
us through life. Things such
as guilt, fear, worry, and anger
are just some of the things we
pack into our excess baggage.
As Padres our ministry often
involves us in helping people to
get rid of the excess baggage.
Being part of the Air Force
when travelling we soon learnt
to take what we needed for the
journey and no more. I think
every now and then it does us
all good to check what we have
in our personal baggage and
to get rid of any unnecessary
excess, as our journey will be so
much easier without it.
PTSD Resolution helps veterans
and TA who have failed to
reintegrate into a normal
work & family life because of
military trauma suffered during
service in the armed forces.
Trauma causes flashbacks,
to violence, alcohol and
substance abuse, job loss, family
breakdown and even suicide.
Through a nationwide
network of 250 accredited
provides treatment to enable
veterans to resolve the mental
health problems associated
with military trauma that
obstruct a normal range of
family and work relationships.
Resolution therapy is
brief, with an average of
just three to four one-hour
sessions, conducted on an
out-patient basis, to support
family and work routines.
The programme is
All of the young adults, I spoke with, who were attending
the work experience programme, agreed what a great
place RAF Marham was to work at for the week, one said:
“It doesn’t get anymore real than working on an actual
RAF base, and getting hands on with the nitty gritty.”
All of the work
experience students
understood they
were exceptionally
lucky to be trusted with so many
important tasks during their
one week of learning, under the
watchful eye of their supervisors.
“All of the crew are amazingly nice
and the banter never ends. They
strive for you to do well, they
teach you, and inform you, but
they are not short of smiles and
making you feel welcome,” were
the comments from the students.
real feel for what it would be like
to work here, and the positive
ethos and sense of community
which makes them want to get
into this profession even more. I
myself worked in the media and
communications office, and got
to write this article, as well as
one about the nursery open day.
Kirsten Riding who was
working in the photo section
said, “It was a lot of fun, I learnt
a lot and got to do pretty much
everything that my mentors
did.” Kirsten’s mentor said this
about work experience: “It is
a fantastic opportunity for the
youth of today to experience the
day to day role of a profession
which they potentially will
progress to in later life.”
Jake Duggan and Daniel
in the station gym; they said RAF
Marham training sessions suited
their needs and capabilities.
“We’ve been doing lots this week;
monitoring circuits, creating our
own circuits, and learning good
coordination and communication
skills.” They added, “The gym
has a good variety of equipment,
there are spinning bikes,
weights, and rock climbing.”
Their mentor said “Working
here for a week is not only an
opportunity for them to improve
their compositional abilities but
also their interpersonal skills.”
Matthew Willett was primarily
interested in tactical imagery,
Reservists from 2620 (County of Norfolk) Squadron met
with the founders of the charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers
at RAF Marham to hand over a cheque for £812.
The Squadron raised
the money through
sponsorship of their
team entry in this
year’s Grand East Anglia Run
generously donated by RAF
Nichola who attended the
said ‘We are extremely grateful
CHARIty EVENt
This event allowed
each member of the
flight to select a team
of 11 players; each
player would gain points each
week giving them a weekly
team score. Each person
could enter as many teams
as they wanted. All players
available for selection were
individually valued. Each
team selected must have
remained within a budget of
£50 million pounds. Each team
had to consist of one of two
formations, 1-4-4-2 or 1-4-3-3.
To enter a team cost £5;
these monies were divided 50%,
30% and 20% for 1st, 2nd and
3rd places. Within the season
there were four predetermined
transfer windows. These
transfer windows enable
team selectors to exchange
a maximum of three players
per window at a cost of £1
per transfer. All the monies
collected from the transfers
were given to a charity selected
by a member of the flight.
CHARIty EVENt
Six members from the RAF Marham Snooker Club
recently took part in a 24hr doubles snooker match.
However, this was no
ordinary snooker
match, as each
player was required
to wear their NBC suit whilst
playing each shot. Again thinking
that this was too easy, it was
also decided that each team
would have to score a minimum
of 1,470 points throughout the
24hr period. This worked out that
every 30 seconds; one point per
team must be scored for us to
have any chance of succeeding
within the 24hr time frame.
Cpl Kaberry along with SAC’s
Rhodes, Flint, Cook, Armitage
and Hutton all took part in
the event raising a staggering
£1,300 for Help for Heroes.
The snooker match was
followed by a charity raffle,
which was a huge success
raising almost half of the
total raised. The prizes were
donated by various local
businesses from around King’s
Lynn and also businesses here
at Marham. Without these
kind donations we would
not have been able to reach
our target of £1,000, so a
massive ‘thank you’ to all that
helped us along our way.
The Snooker Club will
now be setting up a snooker
to take part in this should
for more information contact
the OIC or Deputy.
The Snooker Club wish to
thank everybody who donated
and also a big thank you to OC
BSW for kick-starting the event
by making the first break.
As the chairman of the Gardening Club it gives me
great satisfaction watching the club go from strength
to strength since taking on the School View site.
Gardening and
growing things is
both educational
and healthy for
children. The teachers from
the Infant School are doing
a fantastic job educating our
children in growing fruit and
vegetables who themselves
have two plots at the School
View site.
It hasn’t been an easy task
by any means especially when
we had that extremely dry
spell but finally after a lot of
hard work and determination
everyone is having great success
in growing their own produce.
We have a waiting list now
for the 15m x 5m plots (Cost £30
per annum) and we still have a
number of the smaller 7.5 m x 5m
(Cost £15 per annum) so if you’re
interested please contact the
club secretary CPl WrighT on
Ext: 7477 followed by option 1.
With the amount of excess
produce we are now finding
ourselves with, it finds itself
outside the Thrift Shop at
very reasonable prices, so if
you fancy some organically
home grown produce then
head to the Thrift Shop.
On behalf of the Club there
are a few organisations I would
‘With the amount
of excess produce
we are now
finding ourselves
with, it finds itself
outside the Thrift
Shop at very
reasonable prices’
like to thank for their help and
assistance since we started.
A kind donation from SSAFA
has meant we will soon have
a garden shed, somewhere
to safely store equipment
and take refuge in inclement
weather and importantly harvest
rainwater. A donation from the
Thrift Shop and a big ‘thank
you’ to the Marham Parish for
assisting in the grass cutting.
To receive any TV
channels you will
need to have one
of the following;
Freeview top set, Satellite
service, Freesat or BT vision
or similar but consider:
1. how many TVs do you have
in your home? Consider
every TV set that you want
to continue watching. Any
TV left unconverted will
not work after switchover.
2. do you like to record TV
programmes? Video and
DVD recorders will still play
back and record but most
won’t be able to record
one channel while you
watch another. If you enjoy
recording, consider getting
a digital TV recorder that
will also convert your TV.
3. your TV aerial. Most rooftop
aerials and some set-top
aerials will be fine after
Six Marham parents
have been busy telling
stories to their children
during a recent course
in The Station Library. Norfolk
family learning ran a course
for parents to make story
sacks. Parents have decorated
a sack, collected characters
and made artefacts to suit their
chosen story books. “I have
thoroughly enjoyed making
something for my son to extend
his reading skills” said one
mum. The course ran for ten
weeks and supplied a crèche
into which the children settled
very quickly. The parents
have enjoyed the course so
much that they are talking
about making more sacks
and running another course.
MEMORIAL RALLy
The weekend of 13th / 14th August saw the runway’s and
perimeter track at RAF Marham transformed into a multistage
tarmac rally for the 4th Richard Burns Memorial Rally.
The event, held in
conjunction with the
Kings Lynn and District
Motor Club, had over 125
entrants from across the country
competing over challenging stages
of 12 – 14 miles.
The highlight for many of the
competitors this year was the
chance to test their skills and
compete alongside Kris Meeke and
Dani Sordi from the MINI World
Rally Championship Team.
The rally was set up as a
memorial to Richard Burns, the first
Englishman to win the World Rally
Championship back in 2001. Richard
visited RAF Marham in 2000 and
completed a sortie in a Tornado
GR4 alongside Sqn Ldr Tim Rust.
In reciprocation, Richard gave RAF
Marham personnel stage rides in
a Subaru Impreza World Rally Car.
One of those was Sgt Chris Daykin,
the brainchild behind the Memorial
Rally. This meeting inspired Chris
to take up the sport of rallying.
Tragically Richard died from a
brain tumour in 2005, four years
to the day after taking the title of
World Rally Champion.
The money raised from the
event is split between the Richard
Burns Foundation, a charity that
supports the Brain and Spine
Foundation to create a nationwide
network of brain centres in the
UK, and RAF Charities including
the RAF Benevolent Fund and
RAFA, both of which have directly
supported RAF Marham personnel
and their families. To date the
Richard Burns Memorial Rally has
raised over £90,000.
On August 11th RAF Marham opened its gates
for the annual Friends and Families Day.
The event is an
opportunity for Station
personnel to say a
big ‘thank you’ to the
families and organisations who
have supported them throughout
the year, at home and whilst away
on operational detachments.
The grey clouds cleared
for the afternoon’s flying,
were treated to a wealth
of displays including a
Britain Memorial Flight, a
Focke Wulf 190, and 6 of the
Yak 52, known as the Aerostars,
performing a stunning display,
amongst many others, with the
Hunter closing the show.
As well as the flying
displays, there were stalls
and exhibitors from
charities, such as the
RAF Benevolent Fund,
RAFA and East Anglian
Air Ambulance. A large
selection of classic cars
generated a lot of excitement
along with the vintage US
military vehicles that were
on display. The British Forces
Broadcasting Service were on
families to be broadcast to loved
The team comprising
Station Graphics and a
Station photographer
gathered at the Squadron early
on the Friday morning for the
trip via the Euro Tunnel to
Belgium. As we approached
The idea of a Staff Ride to Belgium studying WWI had not really crossed my mind as I had always
associated WWI with France and The Somme. However, Belgium turned out to be both a fascinating
insight into the start of WWI and a real eye opener into the hardships of war.
Ypres our ‘tour guide’ Major Gary
Walker started one of a series of
excellent and informative briefs
2 MARHAM MATTERS issuE 8
so that we were aware from the
‘get go’ of our surroundings.
Having arrived at the excellent
Flanders Lodge Hotel and stowed
our gear we walked into Ypres
itself for the first stand at the
Menin Gate. Sir Michael Oswald,
the Honorary Air Commodore
of No 2620 Sqn had also come
along and set a cracking pace into
town despite being nearly 90!
Arriving at the Menin Gate
in Ypres the team were briefed
on the significance of both the
town and the Gate. Ypres in the
middle ages was the 3rd most
important city in Flanders and
the magnificent Gothic Cloth Hall
is a reflection of this, the centre
of the hugely important cloth
trade. The Menin Gate stands on
the site of one of the old town
gates through which thousands of
soldiers passed through on their
way to the front, many of course
never returning. Opened in 1927
the memorial bears the name
of 55,000 soldiers who have no
known grave, lost between the
outbreak of War and 15th August
1917. Ypres and the surrounding
area had been reduced to a
rubble and mud-filled swamp…
VISIt: www.maRhammattERsonlinE.co.uk
hard to imagine when strolling
through the very elegant and
sophisticated town that it is today.
An early reveille followed the
next day and the coach departed
for Dixmunde, to visit the Death
Trench and Ijzer Tower. Two
more stands were presented and
we learnt how this town was also
reduced to rubble. This area was
the scene of the famous battle
in 1914 – the Battle of the Ijzer –
when French and Belgian troops
finally stopped the German
advance, but at a dreadful price.
The trench is a kilometre-long
network of revetments and
was one of the most dangerous
Belgian positions on the Western
Front, situated just 50m from a
German bunker. The Ijzer Tower
is a 22 floor monument which
‘Over the next five
months more than
8,000 metres of
tunnel were dug
and 600 tons of
explosive placed
in position. The
simultaneous
explosion of the
mines took place
on the 7th June
and could be
heard in London.’
VISIt: www.maRhammattERsonlinE.co.uk
commemorates the heroic
struggle of the Flemish people
to achieve their national identity.
The first tower was built in the
1930s as a memorial to the
Flemish soldiers that died at
the front but was mysteriously
destroyed in an explosion just
after the end of WWII, the new
structure being completed in
1965. The tower is devoted to
an insightful museum on the
themes of ‘War, Peace and the
Emancipation of Flanders’.
The afternoon started at the
superbly maintained Essex Farm
Cemetery. The Commonwealth
War Graves Commission
maintains these cemeteries along
with many others throughout the
world. The Essex Farm Cemetery
contains the headstone of Private
Joe Strudwick who, aged just
15, was the youngest known
casualty of war. In addition,
it was also where Canadian
Medical Officer Colonel John
McCrea was stationed when he
wrote what is perhaps the war’s
best-known poem, ’In Flanders
Fields’ from which derived the
remembrance emblem of the
Poppy. This cemetery was at
the site of a dressing station
and was named after a small
cottage that stood beside the
Boesinge road, a major road
for transporting casualties.
The final part of the day, and
stands four and five, found the
team on the Messines Ridge. This
area was in a strategic position
just south east of Ypres and
had been held by the German
Army since December 1914.
It was the scene of one of the
most spectacular and successful
operations on the Western Front,
a tactical success brought about
by careful planning, engineering
skills and knowledge of the local
geography. In January 1917,
General Sir Herbert Plumer gave
orders for 21 mines to be placed
under German Lines. Over the
next five months more than 8,000
metres of tunnel were dug and
600 tons of explosive placed
in position. The simultaneous
explosion of the mines took
place on the 7th June and could
be heard in London. Its blast
killed 10,000 soldiers. Two mines
failed to explode, one of which
is unlocated and still buried
beneath the local farm land.
After arriving back at Ypres
the team prepared for the daily
memorial service at the Menin
Gate at 8pm. A solemn and
humbling occasion, visitors
assemble underneath the Gate
and the last post is played. Sqn
Ldr Jonathan White, the OC of
No 2620 Sqn laid a wreath at the
Gate as a token of our thoughts
during our visit to the area. The
daily ceremony is organised by
the Last Post Association and
focuses visitor’s minds very
Ex BElgian
scholaR 2011
much on the human costs of
WWI and perhaps successive
and current conflicts.
The last day was spent at
Abele Airfield just outside of
the town of Poperinge, known
universally during the war
years as Pops. Soldiers came
here to rest from the trenches.
Pops became a haven of shops,
restaurants, dance halls and
coffee houses; it provided a
much needed respite for soldiers
during the War. The TIW team
presented an excellent overview
of the aircraft of WWI and the
use of reconnaissance, fighter
tactics and early bombing efforts.
Prior to arriving at the airfield
we stopped off at Brandhoek New
Military Cemetery to view the
grave of Capt Noel Chavasse VC
and Bar, MC RAMC. Having been
awarded 2 VCs, in addition to his
MC, we all felt his last resting
place was worthy of our homage.
As we departed Belgium we
felt far better informed from
our experiences. For many of
us the numbers of soldiers who
died, the extremes of their living
conditions, the methods and
technology of battle and the
barriers to just surviving had made
us all think. It was a very quiet
trip home but we all had been
touched by our time in Belgium.
Our thanks went to Major
Gary Walker whose enthusiasm
and knowledge ensured our
trip was well informed and
memorable. Also to SAC Ben Ives
our driver who negotiated some
fairly tight ‘battlefield’ roads.
SuMMER CAMPS 2011
WriTTEn By: Flt Lt D A Hawley, ACLO
From Saturday 2nd July to Saturday 3rd September 2011,
cadets and staff of the Air Training Corps (ATC) have
been taking part in Summer Camps at RAF Marham.
These camps lasted
for one week each,
running from Saturday
to Saturday and gave
the cadets chance to experience
what life is like at RAF Marham.
The stated aims of the camps
are to allow the cadets to
experience the day-to-day
life of their parent Service, to
undertake outdoor training
and to gain flying experience.
A total of over 300 cadets over
a nine week period attended the
camps. Each group consisted of
up to 36 cadets aged between
13 and 18 and up to 10 staff,
including VR(T) officers, ATC
adult SNCOs and Civilian
Instructors. This year cadets
came from Hertfordshire and
Buckinghamshire Wing, Norfolk
and Suffolk Wing, Warwickshire
and Birmingham Wing and
South and East Midlands Wing.
Whilst at Marham, the cadets
visited the RAF Police Section,
the Station Fire Section, TIW,
CMU, 2620 RAuxAF Regt Sqn,
93 (EA) Sqn and of course a
Tornado Sqn or the Weapons
Load Trainer. They also undertook
Air Experience Flying at RAF
Wyton with 5 AEF Sqn, took part
in a Night Exercise (NITEX) where
28 MARHAM MATTERS issuE 8
they learnt some basic fieldcraft
skills, received an RAF brief and
leadership training from the RAF
Motivational Outreach Team (MOT),
went bowling, visited Duxford
Imperial War Museum, and sampled
the delights of Hunstanton.
During the course of the
summer, the cadets also provided
assistance to the Marham Friends
and Families Day, the ‘Marham
10’ Charity Race and Fun Run
and the Richards Burns Memorial
Rally weekend. Additionally,
several cadets undertook
short work experience visits to
sections around the Station.
This years summer camps have
successfully allowed the cadets to
experience for themselves a little
of what RAF Marham is all about
and given them a valuable insight
into the RAF. These camps have
run smoothly largely thanks to the
cooperation and positive attitude
of all the Squadrons and Sections
involved and the ACLO would like
to extend his thanks accordingly.
Although the summer camps are
now over for 2011, RAF Marham
assistance to and involvement
with the ATC does not stop there
and anyone wishing to help with
any activities relating to the Air
Cadets should contact the ACLO.
Wing Commander
Steve Dharamraj
was kept
busy all
evening meeting staff,
making presentations and
promotions and briefing the
cadets on Marham’s role
in Operation ELLAMY.
Four cadets - Aaron
Bannell, Ryan Jackson, Rachel
Cooper and Jackson Sargeant
all received their First Class
Cadet badges and certificates
from the Wing Commander
who then presented
sergeant’s stripes to Cdt Cpl
Ben Nurse and corporal’s
stripes to Cdt Megan Taylor. In
addition, Cadet Aaron Bannell
was named Cadet of the Year
and received his certificate
and trophy from OC BSW.
After the presentations and
a well-earned cup of tea, Wing
Commander Dharamraj met
the unit’s staff and service
helpers and then sat down
with the cadets to tell them
about his own experiences
as an Air Cadet, followed by
a short briefing on Marham’s
historic role in Op ELLAMY.
The cadets’ commanding
officer - Flt Lt Tony Hall said
“I’d like to thank the Wing
Commander for taking time
out of his busy schedule to
visit us. The cadets were
absolutely fascinated by his
account of Op ELLAMY”
• As kitchens can be dangerous
places for children, avoid
leaving them unsupervised
• Avoid using the front of the hob
when small children are around
• Make sure that saucepan
them being knocked off
You will want to make sure children
are always safe. This includes
teaching them how to prevent a fire
and what to do if there is one. You
will probably need to talk about
fire safety with children more than
once, to make sure that they have
remembered and understood what
you have taught them. As a general
rule younger children, around
five and below, should be given
clear instructions about what they
should and shouldn’t do. With older
children, it’s better to explain why.
fires and heaters
• Never to switch
on the cooker
• Not to touch saucepans
• Not to put things on top
Share these safety messages
with your children so
they know what to do in
the event of a fire.
tEll thEm:
• If you see smoke or flames
tell a grown-up straight away
• Get out of the building
as quickly as you can
if there is a fire
• Don’t go back for anything,
even toys or pets
• Find a phone. (You
might need to go to the
neighbours to find one)
• Call 999. Ask for Fire and
Rescue Service and tell them
your address. (You might
want to practice making
this call with children and
will need to make sure
they know their address)
• Only call 999 in a
real emergency
• Never hide if there is a fire
get out as quickly as you can
• If there’s smoke, crawl
along the floor (the air will
be clearer down there)
• Go into a room with a window
if the way out is blocked
• Put bedding or towels along
the bottom of the door to
stop smoke getting in
• Open the window and
call “HELP FIRE”
ANIMAL
PARK
On a 28th July, 140
adults and children set
off to Pettitts Animal
Park near Acle.
We were
blessed with
sunshine, and
it only took us
just over an hour to get there.
The children enjoyed an array
of rides including a pirate
ship, runaway train and flying
elephants. The children also
loved seeing the snakes and
lizards in the reptile house.
I am sure most decided,
as we did, to take a trip on
the little train, which took us
all around the park. Past the
rides, animal petting area and
the large children’s play park.
Lunch for us was a picnic,
followed by the clown show
which the children loved and
thought extremely funny!
The quiet coach returned
to Marham at 4pm with lots
of very sleepy children,
and tired adults!
The trip was enjoyable
not only for the children
but also for the adults. I
would like to thank both
Community Support and
Pettitts Animal Park for a
wonderful family day out.
MESS
This recipe is really
easy and a great way
of using up all the
lovely soft fruits about
at the moment. The hedgerows
are full of blackberries and
raspberries are still widely
available. My personal
favourite are blueberries
as the taste is gorgeous!
ingREdiEnts
• 4 meringue nests (Co-op
nests are very good or make
your own, much better!)
• Half pint whipping cream
• Little castor sugar
• 2 punnets of soft fruits,
blackberries, strawberries,
raspberries etc
• Cassis
1. First whip the cream into
soft peaks in a large bowl
with a dessert spoon
of sugar to sweeten.
2. Crumble into the cream the
four meringue nests, roughly
the size of sugar cubes.
3. Stir very gently so
as not to crush the
meringues too much.
4. Wash and dry the soft
fruits and gently stir into
the meringue and cream
mixture. Add a little cassis
to the mixture if you want to
make it a bit special and you
are not serving to children!
5. Pile a couple of tablespoons
of the mixture into glass
beakers or wine glasses
