Program
Welcome
Introduction to Laparoscopic Suturing (Michael Wynn-Williams) (15 Min)
Dry Lab Workshop
Exercise 1 (70 min) 20 candidates
Aim - To be able to place a laparoscopic suture and tie off with an extracorporeal
knot.
Exercise - The technique of placing and tying an extracorporeal knot has been
broken down into individual steps to be learnt and will be brought together at the
end with completion of the entire task. Each task will be completed in 10 minutes.
Each task will be presented on the video screen.
Task 1
Rope passing – using a needle holder and grasper, pass the provided
piece of rope from one instrument to another for its entire length. Try this
now with suture material.
Task 2
Needle Setup - Load a suture for introduction into the suturing port –
discuss needle and needle holder design
Task 3
Needle Loading - Grasp, manipulate and load suture into the neutral and
backload positions
Task 4
Drive needle through tissue
Task 5
Weston Knot - Perform a Weston Knot with the white rope provided
Task 6
Roeder Knot - Perform a Modified Roeder Knot with the white rope
provided
Task 7
IUGA Pre-Congress Laparoscopic Suturing Workshop 2012 – M.R. Wynn-Williams
Tie two extracorporeal knots around suturing rack using Endoknot
provided
Final Task
Compete to perform the fastest extracorporeal knot placement with the
group
Morning Tea (20 min) groups then swap exercises
Lectures & Video Presentations (15 min each)
