State aims to keep
water tariffs in check
By Basil Foo
ShAh AlAM: Selangor is promising
consumers only limited water tarff increases
should the state take over and consolidate
the water services industry.
“If the restructuring is accepted by Putrajaya.....
the price of water will not increase
higher than 12 per cent for seven years,” said
Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim at a
press conference after a state executive
council meeting on Wednesday.
He said the state objected to a 37 per cent
increase in water tariffs in 2009 and is ob-
ShAh AlAM: Selangor has accused
Putrajaya of failing in its public responsibility
to provide National Higher Education Fund
(PTPTN) loans to Universiti Selangor
(Unisel) students.
“By restricting Unisel students from their
right to a loan, the Federal government is
not doing its duty,” said Menteri Besar Tan
Sri Khalid Ibrahim at a press conference
after the state executive council meeting on
Wednesday.
He said the PTPTN should provide
education loans to all students, irrespective
of which university they belonged to.
“Although Unisel is a state-owned university,
it also provides opportunities to
jecting to another 25 per cent hike this year,
and a further 20 per cent rise slated for 2015.
He explained that the water restructuring
exercise was important so consumers can
avoid having to pay additional tariffs.
“We also want to make sure that, by restructuring,
Non-Revenue Water (NRW)
will be reduced,” he added.
Non-Revenue Water is treated water
which is lost through leakages and theft and
currently makes up about 32 per cent of the
total water produced.
He said a target set by Syarikat Bekalan
Air Selangor (Syabas) to reduce NRW to
students from Terengganu, Sabah, Sarawak,
and from all over Malaysia to get an education.”
Responding to Higher Education Minister
Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin’s call for the
state to waive the tuition fees for Unisel to
fulfil Pakatan Rakyat’s free education promise,
Khalid said they would only do so after
capturing Putrajaya.
He said once they have the opportunity
to manage the Treasury, they could fund free
education using money derived from the
reduction of allocation in other areas of
government.
“There are allocations that can be reduced
to find free education. If BN gives up now
Watch legend Foo strut his stuff
19 per cent is far from being achieved.
Khalid also said the state currently cannot
gives allocations for repairs or maintenance
of water treatment plants.
“Only after the restructuring can the state
give allocations. It is not the state’s jurisdiction
now,” he said.
There are currently 33 water treatment
plants in the state, with 29 owned by Selangor
and four others privately owned.
Though owned by the state, they cannot
upgrade the treatment plants as operational
rights were awarded to Puncak Niaga Holdings
Bhd by the former state government.
Khalid: Be fair to Unisel students
By Lee Choon Fai
ShAh AlAM: Malaysian badminton
legend Foo Kok Keong will be taking part
in an inaugural inter-club championship
being organised to commemorate his sporting
contributions to the country.
The former international will be playing
under Shah Alam Club Team Alpha in the
Foo Kok Keong Cup Championship from
June 22-24 at the Shah Alam Club badminton
hall.
“Everyone is invited to watch the legend
play and there will be no admission charge,”
said organising chairman Soon Ee Hooi.
Foo was rated as one of the best players
in the world from the late 80s to the mid
90s and has several titles under his belt,
including being part of Malaysia’s Thomas
Cup winning team in 1992.
and we go to Putrajaya, after 100 days, it can
be done,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Higher Education Ministry
was told not to “punish” Unisel students
by denying them the loans.
“The act of withdrawing PTPTN loans
only burdens the students,” said state executive
councillor Dr Yaakop Sapari.
He said in a statement on Thursday that
the burden would cause suffering amongst
the students’ parents, who are supporters of
parties from both sides of the political spectrum.
He added that it was unfair as the students
involved were not only from Selangor
but from other states as well.
Foo (front row, centre) will be participating in the inaugural Foo Kok Keong Cup Championship. Also in the picture is Soon
(front row, second from right).
The competition also features RM38,500
worth of prizes, the highest yet in inter-club
competitions.
Eight teams from Selangor, Perak, and
Penang will be participating.
The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA)
is also sending a team to take part in the
competition and endorses the event by offering
free publicity via banners and advertisements.
