DAGGER
until the king had paid for those already.
delivered. In a fury James snatched up a
loaded gun and fired point-blank, shredding
the gunsmith's ear.
The king added to his unpopularity by
ordering the Book of Sports to be read in
the churches on Sundays. It was actually
not a book, but a pamphlet written by James
himself to encourage the people to hunt on
the Sabbath.
Few firearms from royal collections have
had such a fascinating story, or been so
closely connected with international intrigue,
as a pair of pistols and a gun which were
once owned by Empress Elizabeth of Russia.
Although these weapons have probably'never
been fired in anger at a human being, they
were directly responsible for the deaths of a
score or more of people. The story begins in
Paris, where the Chevalier de Bruslart was a
secret agent of the French royal house of
Bourbon, which sided with the bluebloods of
Russia. against Napoleon.
Secret agent de Bruslart attached himself
to Napoleon's army. He was with it for the
ill-fated 1.812 campaign, which ended in the
Little Corporal's disastrous retreat from Mos-
cow, during which three-quarters of his men
and guns fell and froze in the Russian snows.
De Bruslart was not only a secret agent but
a born adventurer as well. He managed to
reach St. Petersburg. There, by virtue of his
royal connections, he gained entrance to the
fabulous armory of Emperor Alexander I.
When he left, his capacious cloak concealed
a gold-encrusted treasure. This was a flint-
To American Riflemen who want the best in CustomBilt
rifles in either standard calibers, popular wildcats or the
famous
lock sporting gun, a pair of flint-lock pistols,
a powder flask, and a pair of stirrups, all
matching, made for the Empress Elizabeth
in 1752 at Tula, in central Russia, center of
the Russian firearms industry.
Carrying his priceless loot, de Bruslart
headed west. He did not go to France, where
the story of his exploits would have earned
him a Republican firing squad instead of a
royal slap on the back. England was his
goal; but during his perilous journey he was
attacked several times by bandits. Twice the
marauders made off with his treasure, but
they failed to kill the tough adventurer. Fin-
ally, de Bruslart gathered about him a group
of desperadoes, ambushed and slaughtered
the bandits, recovered his trophies and
reached the English Channel.
Once in England, de Bruslart left the
weapons for safe-keeping with some friends
named Vardon. Then he returned to France
on a dangerous secret mission. Neither the
Vardons nor anyone else ever heard from him
again, and the gun, pistols, powder flask,
and stirrups stayed in the Vardon family
until 1950. Since then they have been in the
Tower of London collection.
However wealthy, the modern sportsman
may be excused if he does not order his
guns encrusted like the rich pieces of by-
gone days. The chief designer of a London
firm of gunmakers recently estimated that
the gold, the artistry, and the time required
to decorate a rifle in a manner comparable to
that of the Empress Elizabeth's gun, would
set the customer back a cool $6,006. @
