Divisional Play Begins
Having completed play against the Gehrig
Division, Dartmouth gets its first taste of the teams
in the Rolfe Division this weekend at Yale. The Big
Green enter the four-game series with a two-game
lead in the standings at 6-2, ahead of both the
Bulldogs and Brown, each of whom split their eight
games against the other division.
last Week in review
• Dartmouth played five home games within the
last week, winning each one to extend its win
streak at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park to 16
games, the second longest in the country behind
North Carolina, which has won 18 straight.
• Most recently, the Big Green rallied from a 10-5
deficit with two in the seventh and an eight-run
eighth to defeat Boston College on Tuesday, 15-
10. The Eagles had won the last eight meetings,
with the last Dartmouth victory coming in 2002.
• The Dartmouth pitching staff surrendered just
10 runs over 38 innings to sweep doubleheaders
from Cornell and Princeton. Both seven-inning
contests instead went 10 with the Big Green rallying
from behind in extra frames in each.
• Senior outfielder Sam Bean hit safely in all five
games last week and has the longest active hit
streak in the Ivy League at a modest seven games.
• Senior closer Ryan Smith earned two victories
and a save over the weekend, and was chosen as
the Ivy League Pitcher of the Week.
last time against the Bulldogs
With a four-game sweep of Yale in Hanover,
Dartmouth took command of the Rolfe Division and
never looked back. Robert Young set the tone for the
series by tossing a six-hit shutout in the first game,
with Jason Brooks going 3-for-3 with two doubles,
two runs and an RBI in the 3-0 win. A five-spot in
the first inning — highlighted by a Jim Wren threerun
homer — of game two allowed Dartmouth to
cruise to a 7-4 triumph. Kyle Hendricks nearly
duplicated Young’s feat with 6.2 scoreless innings
before the Bulldogs scored two meaningless runs in
an 8-2 Green win. The final game was the closest as
Dartmouth tied the score in the eighth at two on Joe
Sclafani’s run-scoring single, then won in the 10th
when Chris O’Dowd singled home the winning run.
the overall record vs. Yale
• The two teams have met exactly 200 times on
the diamond with the Bulldogs having a decided
advantage at 115-84-1.
• With last year’s series sweep of Yale — outscoring
the Bulldogs 21-8 in the process — Dartmouth
has won the last seven contests.
• Dartmouth head coach Bob Whalen enters the
series with a 41-37 mark versus the Bulldogs.
• Yale has hosted the Big Green for 85 games since
the steel and concrete structure was built in 1928,
with Dartmouth going 30-54-1 in that time.
• The first game in the series took place 130 years
ago when the Big Green defeated Yale, 6-3.
scouting report on the Bulldogs
• Yale has enjoyed a solid season to date, bridging
March and April with a seven-game win streak,
the last two victories starting Ivy play against
Cornell.
• The bats have produced a .288 average this season,
but an even better .310 thus far in the eight
Ivy games, both marks ranking second in the
league.
• Six Bulldogs are batting over .300 with parttimer
Cam Squires leading the way at .367.
But the most dangerous hitters have been
Trey Rallis (.337/.426/.469) and Andy Megee
(.316/.377/.447), the latter of which leads the team
with nine doubles, 23 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.
Rallis is hitting a league-best .462 in Ivy games.
• The Yale pitching staff ranks in the middle of the
pack in the Ivy League with a 5.19 ERA, but just
4.57 in conference play.
• Left-hander Vinny Lally leads the conference with
53 strikeouts in 47.2 innings, but has also walked
26 batters.
• Yale head coach John Stuper, a former major
league pitcher, will rely mostly upon Cale
Hanson, Kevin Fortunato and Eric Shultz out of
the bullpen. Shultz has pitched in 16 games this
season, more than any other Ivy pitcher.
• Defensively, only the Bulldogs have a better fielding
percentage than Dartmouth at .968 with 33
errors. Jacob Hunter and Gant Elmore make a
strong double-play combination up the middle,
but teams have run a bit on Yale with the opposition
stealing 36-of-47 this year.
Dartmouth BaseBall
Yale — April 16-17
Probable starting Pitchers
• Dartmouth will be sticking to its weekend
rotation, beginning with sophomore LHP Kyle
Hunter (3-1, 2.12). The southpaw is 5-1 in his
career over 14 starts, but has not gotten a decision
in six of his seven regular-season Ivy starts,
including last week despite allowing just one run
over nine innings while striking out a career-high
10 batters. Junior RHP Cole Sulser (3-0, 2.41)
will climb the hill for game two on Saturday. He is
coming off a complete-game victory in which he
struck out a career-best 13 hitters while winning
his 11th straight decision. On Sunday, junior
RHP Kyle Hendricks (2-2, 2.12) gets the call.
Like Hunter, he did not get a decision last week
in a 10-inning win over Princeton, tossing eight
innings and yielding three runs. Closing out the
series will be freshman LHP Mitch Horacek (3-0,
7.30), who had his best start of the season in beating
Princeton last week as he surrendered just one
run over six innings with five strikeouts.
• In the first 24 games this year, Dartmouth has
faced just two left-handed starters. Yale will
change all that by sending three southpaws to
the mound. First up will be LHP Vinny Lally
(3-0, 2.45) who did not allow a run last week to
Penn over nine innings, but could not get a win
as Yale was shut out in a 10-inning loss. The lone
right-hander, Pat Ludwig (2-2, 3.94), will take to
the mound for game two. He has won both of his
conference starts, giving up just two earned runs
in 11 innings. LHP Christopher O’Hare (3-0, 3.63)
goes first on Sunday; he has walked just three batters
in 17.1 innings. Finally, LHP Brook Hart (3-3,
2.75) goes in game four. He got off to a great start,
but is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in his two Ivy starts.
of the Week honor previously, but he could not be
overlooked after winning two games and saving
another during an Ivy weekend on April 9-10.
Against Cornell, he pitched the 10th inning before
the Green rallied for the win in the bottom half.
The next day, he doubled as a masterful escape artist
to get the win versus Princeton in the first game,
entering in the 10th with runners on the corners
and nobody out in a tie game, yet keeping the Tigers
off the board to allow Dartmouth to score the
game-winning in the bottom half. Smith recorded
the final two outs of a 5-2 victory over Princeton to
cap his weekend and wrap up the award.
8-run 8th keeps home streak alive
Trailing 10-5 into the bottom of the seventh
against Boston College on April 12, it looked as if
the Big Green’s home winning streak would come
to an end. But Dartmouth chipped away with two
in the seventh before exploding for eight runs in the
fateful eighth frame. Junior Joe Sclafani finished
what he started, hitting a one-out double to begin
the rally before capping it with a two-run triple.
The win extended the home winning streak to 16
games, second only to North Carolina (18), and the
second longest in school history. From 1923-26,
Dartmouth won 32 straight games in Hanover.
offense among nation’s Best
At the end of last weekend, Dartmouth continued
to be ranked among the top 15 in five offensive
statistical categories — triples per game (0.61, 2nd),
doubles per game (2.43, 7th), scoring (8.2, 7th),
batting average (.320, 11th) and slugging percentage
(.473, 13th). Junior Joe Sclafani was fifth
with 1.3 runs scored per game (then scored twice
against BC) and 11th with 0.17 triples per game
(and clubbed another versus BC). Those numbers
only improved after beating Quinnipiac 16-8, but
national stats are released just once a week.
Dartmouth BaseBall
Yale — April 16-17
gab on the green
• The 15-10 win over BC was the first Dartmouth
win over the Eagles since 2002. Boston College
had won the previous eight encounters.
• Senior catcher Brandon Parks hit his first career
home run against BC, hitting a blast off the roof
of Leverone Field House down the right-field line.
• Junior Joe Sclafani is quickly moving up the
Dartmouth career charts. He hit his 13th career
triple in the win over BC, putting him fourth on
the all-time list. And he also scored two more
runs giving him 117 to date, seventh at Dartmouth
with about one and a half seasons to go.
• Finding his stroke at the plate recently has been
junior David Turnbull, who is hitting .417 (10for-24)
over the last six games with three doubles.
• Both sophomore Kyle Hunter and junior Cole
Sulser posted personal-best marks in innings
and strikeouts against Cornell on April 9. Hunter
did not get a decision despite allowing just one
run over nine innings and striking out 10. Sulser
upstaged the southpaw in the second game with
a nine-inning, complete-game victory with 13
strikeouts.
• A big reason why sophomore Ennis Coble is
leading the Ivy League in RBIs is because he is
hitting .511 (24-for-47) with runners on base and
.600 (21-for-35) with runners in scoring position.
• Freshman Mitch Horacek has started an inning
on the mound 25 times, and the opposition has
put the lead-off hitter on base just three times.
• Horacek’s classmate, Mike Dodakian, has been
particularly effective with runners on base, holding
opponents to a .194 average (6-for-31).
• Senior Jeff Onstott ranks among Dartmouth’s top
10 all-time in triples (10, 7th), walks (74, 7th) and
hits (174, 8th), plus is on the verge of moving into
the top 10 in runs (111, 11th), games played (150,
11th) and RBIs (105, 12th).
• Senior Sam Bean stole three bases in the 14-10
loss at Penn, after having swiped just one in his
entire career. The last Big Green base runner to
nab three bags in one game was Damon Wright
’08 against Navy in the third game of 2008.
• The first, third and eighth innings have been
especially good to the Big Green bats this year.
Dartmouth has scored at least 36 runs in each
of those frames, including 46 in the third, with a
combined .403 batting average.
Winning Program
With the five home wins this past week, Dartmouth
has nudged its all-time record (dating back
to its first year of baseball in 1866) to 1,776-1,773-
24. The last time the Big Green began a day above
.500 came more than 20 years ago on March 20,
1991.
Winning coach
Not only is the Big Green baseball program
back in the black, so is head coach Bob Whalen.
The victory over Boston College boosted his career
record to 421-420-1, the first time it had been better
than even since March 18, 1991, when he was
sitting at 23-22.
Dartmouth BaseBall
Yale — April 16-17
senior relievers Big vs. Bc
Seniors Dan Ternowchek and Colin Britton
have been used sparingly thus far this season, but
they really came through when needed against
Boston College on April 12. Ternowchek entered
the game in the fourth with Dartmouth trailing 5-3,
and tossed 2.2 frames while allowing just two hits
and a single run to keep the game close. Britton
then held the Eagles scoreless for 1.2 innings, just
in time for the Big Green to rally for the 15-10 win.
It was Britton’s first victory since April 28, 2009.
Walk-off Winners in extras
Seniors Jason Brooks and Jeff Onstott each
faced exactly the same scenario on consecutive
days, and both came through with a walk-off hit.
On April 9 against Cornell, Brooks stepped to the
dish in the 10th with the score tied and the bases
loaded with one out. With an 0-1 count, he onehopped
the left-field fence for the game-winning
single. Fast forward to the next day with the score
tied against Princeton in the 10th inning. Again the
bases were loaded, again there was one out, but this
time it was Onstott in the batter’s box. On an 0-1
count (again), Onstott dropped the game-winning
single to right. Now that’s déjà vu …
Brooms for Princeton
For the fifth time in the last seven years, Dartmouth
swept a doubleheader from the Tigers, winning
4-3 in 10 innings before taking a 5-2 contest
on April 10. Since Princeton beat the Big Green in
the Ivy Championship Series in 2004, Dartmouth
has gone 12-2 against the Tigers.
Double-Digit strikeout trio
On April 9, both sophomore Kyle Hunter and
junior Cole Sulser joined their teammate, junior
Kyle Hendricks, as Big Green pitchers who have
struck out at least 10 batters in a game this year.
The last time three Dartmouth pitchers accomplished
the feat in the same season was in 1972
— Dave Highmark (4 times), Jim Metzler (4 times)
and Charlie Janes (once with 17 whiffs).
extra Innings, extra good
With the two 10-inning triumphs during the
weekend of April 9-10, Dartmouth has won six
straight extra-inning affairs over the last two
seasons, five coming in Ivy League play. Princeton
has fallen victim twice, while UCF is the only nonconference
school to lose to Dartmouth in extras.
The last team to beat the Green after regulation
was Harvard on April 25, 2009, one of just five
losses for Dartmouth at its home park since it was
refurbished before the 2009 season.
sulser up to 11 straight Wins
With his complete-game victory over Cornell,
junior Cole Sulser extended his winning streak to
11 decisions, dating back to his freshman season. It
is the third-longest winning streak for a pitcher in
the country, behind two hurlers from the University
of Virginia — Danny Hultzen (16) and Will Roberts
(14). A complete list of pitchers with at least eight
straight winning decisions is listed on page 7.
For the fifth time this year already, Dartmouth
put up at least 16 runs against an opponent when
it defeated Quinnipiac on April 6, 16-8. In only two
other years have the Big Green had as many 16-run
games, most recently in 2004, but first occurring in
1899. No, not 1988, but 1899. Captain Pitt Drew’s
team actually topped 20 in four of those 19th-century
games, including 28 against Bowdoin. In 2004,
head coach Bob Whalen’s crew also had 20 or more
in four of those contests, with a high of 23 against
Fairleigh-Dickinson.
sclafani’s shot and slam
Junior Joe Sclafani belted two crucial home
runs at Quinnipiac in the 16-8 victory on April 6.
The first came in the fifth with a man aboard after
Dartmouth had seen its 7-0 lead trimmed to two
runs. The second capped a six-run ninth of what
was a 10-8 lead to leave no doubt as to the outcome
and gave him a career-high six RBIs on the day. It
was Sclafani’s second career two-homer game, the
first coming in the 2010 NCAA Regional at Miami
against the 11th-ranked Hurricanes. The four fourbaggers
in those two games equal his home run
count for the rest of his career to date.

Brooks Bomb Boosts Big green
After giving up a 3-2 lead in the sixth of a
seven-inning game at Columbia, Dartmouth
needed a boost to win its first Ivy game of the year.
Senior Jason Brooks provided that boost with a
one-out, three-run homer to send the Big Green to
a 6-4 victory. His round-tripper was the third of the
day for Dartmouth, joining Joe Sclafani and Chris
O’Dowd, who each hit solo jacks in the first frame.
home-opening Victory
Dartmouth won its fourth straight home
opener and ninth in the last 10 years by defeating
Siena on March 30, 16-11. It was the first game the
Big Green have hosted in Hanover in the month of
March. The final score does not truly indicate that
the outcome was never really in doubt as the Green
built a 12-0 lead through three innings as every
starter had at least one hit and eight of the nine
drove in at least one run.
Best start in 86 Years
The last time Dartmouth had a better record
after 24 games came in the 1925 season when the
Big Green sported a 19-5 record en route to finishing
the season at 24-5.
staff sizzles in the sunshine
Each of the first 13 games of the 2011 season
were played in the state of Florida, and the pitching
staff really took a shine to the Sunshine State. As
a group, the pitchers posted a 3.45 ERA before
heading back to Hanover. The last Big Green team
to sport an ERA as low for an entire season was the
1975 squad (3.34) anchored by future major leaguer
Jim Beattie. And during the 10-game return trip,
that ERA was a miniscule 2.23.
If there is one thing reliever Ryan Smith knows,
it’s saving. Entering his senior season, he was
already the all-time saves leader in Dartmouth and
Ivy League history, so each win he nails down this
year will simply add to his record total. With two
to add to his total this year, he now has 26 for his
career.
Following a stellar 5-0 week, three Dartmouth
players were chosen for the Ivy League’s three
weekly awards on March 29 — sophomore 3B/
OF Ennis Coble, junior RHP Kyle Hendricks and
freshman 1B/DH Dustin Selzer.
Coble hit .579 (11-for-19) and reached base at
a .680 clip while scoring six times and driving in a
four base runners over eight innings while striking
out 11 in a victory over UMBC to take home the
Pitcher of the Week award. He also is currently
third in the nation in strikeouts per game (12.6).
And Selzer hit .375 (6-for-16) with a pair of threerun
bombs to earn the league’s Rookie of the Week
honor. These are the first selections for Coble and
Selzer, but the fourth in Hendricks’ career.
going Bananas for hits
Dartmouth hitters have shown a penchant for
collecting hits in bunches, with junior Joe Sclafani
recording the first five-hit game of his career in a
17-2 win over UMBC on March 24. The next day,
a trio of Big Green batters — juniors Jake Carlson
and David Turnbull, plus sophomore Ennis
Coble — each had a career-best four knocks versus
Retriever pitchers. All told, Dartmouth has had 58
individual multi-hit games in the first 14 contests.
eleven heaven
Coming off a 3-2 loss in the bottom of the ninth
against Northwestern, the Dartmouth bats wanted
to put some early runs on the board versus UMBC
on March 21. Mission accomplished: the Big Green
sent 17 men to the plate in the first inning and
scored 11 runs, the most ever by a Big Green squad
under head coach Bob Whalen. But it didn’t take
long to duplicate the feat. Dartmouth put an 11spot
on the scoreboard in the 8th inning just three
days later against the Retrievers.
I Don’t know is on third
Actually, I do know, but with rookie Jeff Keller
sidelined with an injury (currently listed as dayto-day),
sophomore Ennis Coble has been playing
third base. That isn’t the interesting thing, however,
for in the late innings against Grinnell, head coach
Bob Whalen employed junior Max Langford,
normally a reliever, at third for defense. He did not
have a chance in the field, but did in the next game
when he entered in the ninth inning. The junior
snared a line drive to help preserve the 16-11 win
over Siena.
nothing earned, Plenty gained
The 3-2 loss to Northwestern was a tough pill to
swallow as the winning run that scored in the bottom
of the ninth was unearned. Dartmouth did not
allow an earned run in the next game, or the next,
then Hendricks tossed his eight shutout innings.
The opposition finally put two earned runs on the
board in the ninth, ending a string of 28.1 straight
innings without one scoring. Granted, the Big
Green did allow seven unearned runs in that span,
but who’s counting?
selzer Fizzes up offense
Freshman Dustin Selzer started six of the last
seven games in Florida and hit safely in each one.
But it was the power display he put on against
UMBC that caught everyone’s attention. With
the Green holding a 5-2 lead in the eighth, Selzer
launched his first career home run, a three-run job,
to double the Dartmouth lead and secure an 8-2
win. The very next day, he drilled another three-run
bomb, turning a 3-0 game into a comfortable lead
in the seventh.
national Player of the Week
Junior RHP Kyle Hendricks absolutely overwhelmed
Army on March 18 in his seven innings
on the hill, striking out a career-best 15 batters in
an 11-2 victory. His performance earned him not
only Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors and
Northeast Region Pitcher of the Week notoriety
from CollegeBaseballInsider.com, but also a spot
among the five players chosen as the Louisville
Slugger National Players of the Week as chosen by
Collegiate Baseball.
The 15 strikeouts were the most by a Dartmouth
hurler since Charlie Janes ’72 fanned 17
against Princeton on April 14, 1972, nearly 39 years
ago. The Big Green record is 20, set by Pete Broberg
’72 against Boston College on May 14, 1971.
Dartmouth BaseBall
Yale — April 16-17
men of the century
While down in Florida, senior Jeff Onstott and
junior Joe Sclafani both scored their 100th career
run, which put them among the top 20 all-time at
Dartmouth. Onstott also collected his 100th RBI
in the 14-10 at Penn with a solo home run in the
second inning.
combined shutout
Against Long Island on March 20, sophomore
Michael Johnson and freshman Mike Dodakian
shutout the Blackbirds despite letting 15 batters
reach base. Thirteen of those runners died on the
basepaths, another was caught stealing and the
last one was wiped out on a double play. Dodakian
tossed the final four innings for his first collegiate
save and has not allowed a run in seven innings.
offensive explosion
Dartmouth served notice with its bats in the
first game of the spring break trip to Florida, tying
a school record with 26 hits in a 19-2 shellacking
of Akron on March 17. Each starter in the lineup
had at least two hits and scored one run, while
eight of the starting nine had at least one RBI as
well. Senior Jason Brooks drove in five runs and
sophomore Chris O’Dowd matched a career high
by scoring four times. By the way, O’Dowd was
also the only starter not to collect an RBI, for those
keeping track …
First Win goes extras
Dartmouth needed extra innings to secure its
first victory of the season. Jeff Onstott delivered
a two-out double in the ninth to tie the game, and
Joe Sclafani and Sam Bean each provided RBI
singles in the 10th to make a winner out of Michael
Johnson, who tossed a scoreless ninth and 10th.
Welcome to the college game
Coach Bob Whalen got a few freshmen some
time on the field during the opening weekend, most
notably third baseman Jeff Keller and outfielder
Ryan Toimil. Keller started the first two games at
the hot corner and got a hit in each, and Toimil
started the third game, providing two base hits and
a run. On the mound, both Louis Concato and
Mitch Horacek each toed the slab in relief, but
both surrendered six runs in less than auspicious
debuts. No worries, Kyle Hunter allowed five runs
in three innings in his collegiate debut, and he
ended up leading the Big Green in ERA last year.
Dartmouth Picked to repeat
In Baseball America’s college preview, the Big
Green were chosen to successfully defend their Ivy
League crown for a third straight year with seven
players earning preseason All-Ivy recognition —
first baseman Jason Brooks, center fielder Jake
Carlson, starting pitcher Kyle Hunter, catcher
Chris O’Dowd, shortstop Joe Sclafani, reliever
Ryan Smith and pitcher Cole Sulser.
Preseason Player of the Year
For the second straight year, Joe Sclafani was
chosen by Baseball America as the conference’s
preseason Player of the Year. In two seasons at
Dartmouth, the shortstop has hit .332 with 15
doubles, eight triples, five home runs, 85 runs
scored and 58 RBIs while getting on base at a .428
clip. Sclafani was also named the best defensive
infielder and one of the top three pure hitters in
the league in a separate poll of the league’s coaches
conducted by CollegeBaseballInsider.com
strike-seeking Pitches
For each of the last two years, Dartmouth pitchers
have walked fewer batters per nine innings than
any other Division I team. Last year, Green hurlers
issued just 1.95 free passes per nine innings, with
Kyle Hunter ninth among individuals at 1.16. Two
other Dartmouth pitchers ranked among the top
40 — Cole Sulser (1.54, 29th) and Robert Young
(1.64, 39th).
road Warriors
As is custom for Dartmouth, it began the season
on the road for most of March and into April.
The first 13 games — and 18 of the first 19 — were
played away from Hanover. The lone home game in
that stretch was on March 30 against Siena.
saves leader Back for more
Senior right-hander Ryan Smith opens his final
collegiate campaign as the all-time saves leader in
Ivy League history with 24 to his credit, including
a league-record 11 as a sophomore. He also has
pitched in more games in Dartmouth history than
anyone before him.
2010 all-Ivy honors for the green
While Dartmouth won the Ivy Championship
for the second straight year, the team did so
without the benefit of one player being named
to the All-Ivy first team, something that had not
happened for the league champ since Dartmouth
shared the EIBL crown in 1963 with Columbia and
Navy. Still, catcher Chris O’Dowd was chosen as
the conference Co-Rookie of the Year and earned
honorable mention honors along with sophomore
right-hander Kyle Hendricks. Selected to the second
team were junior first baseman Jason Brooks,
sophomore shortstop Joe Sclafani, sophomore
outfielder Jake Carlson and sophomore reliever
Cole Sulser. All six are back on the field in 2011.
