His famous father, Ali 

Farka Touré, did not 

want him to become a 

musician but Vieux Farka 

Touré insisted to learn the 

guitar and studied at the 

Bamako Institute of National 

Arts. He has played 

with big cheese Toumani 

Diabaté and his father 

before he passed away 

in 2006. Since then he 

has toured the world and 

collaborated with famous 

artists like Dave Matthews, 

Derek Trucks, John 

Scofield and Ivan Neville 

on his third album. This 

accomplished musician 

is also very committed to 

fighting against malaria in 

his native Mali.

festivals are very important in many ways, 

historically, religiously, socially, economically & 

culturally. this is a great opportunity to witness 

ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

Hogbetsotso 

First Saturday of the month 

Anloga, Volta Region 

Celebrated by the Anlo 

Ewes, an ethnic group on 

the eastern coast of Ghana. 

Legend has it that they 

escaped from the tyrannical 

ruler of Notsie, Ago-Koli, 

by walking backwards. In 

order to commemorate the 

exodus and the bravery of 

their traditional rulers who 

led them on the journey. 

There are many ceremonies 

during this festival including 

a peace-making period 

where all outstanding 

problems are supposed to 

be resolved. There is also 

a purification ceremony 

where villages are swept 

and rubbish is burnt. This 

begins at the Volta Estuary 

and goes on for days until 

it reaches the Mono River 

in Benin. The highlight is 

when the chiefs dress in 

very colorful regalia and sit 

in state. 

Kwafie Festival 

Between November & 

December 

The people of Dormaa 

Ahenkro, Berekum and 

Nsuatre in the Brong Ahafo 

Region 

The Dormaas are reputed 

to have brought fire to 

Ghana and this legend 

is celebrated by, among 

many other activities, the 

burning of a large bonfire. 

This is a period when all the 

descendants of the original 

Dormass come home to 

a grand reunion which 

includes a pageant of the 

royal courts, drumming and 

dancing.

Apoo Festival 

Techiman & Wenchi in the 

Bong Ahafo Region 

This festival aims to purify 

people and to rid them 

of social evil. The word 

“Apoo” comes from the 

root word “po” meaning “to 

reject” therefore “Apoo” 

means the rejection of evil, 

abominations, calamities, 

curses or worries. 

Everybody regardless 

of social status, creed, 

or ethnicity, is allowed 

thirteen days of freedom 

to voice, often in the form 

of proverbs and songs, the 

mistakes and wrong-doings 

of any person, including 

those in high-places like 

the Omahene and his wing 

chiefs. This festival lasts 

one week and includes 

a variety of recreational 

cultural activity. On the last 

day, a Monday, the god Taa- 

Mensa of the community is 

carried through the whole 

town to express gratitude 

to all the people who 

contributed to make the 

festival a success.

Eiok Festival 

Sandema by the Builsas 

This is a war festival which 

re-enacts the ancient 

heroic exploits of the 

Builsas. Amid drumming 

and dancing, the gods are 

invoked for protection and 

for a bountiful harvest.

President John Atta Mills 

Thousands of mourners gathered in August to pay their respects to the late 

President John Atta Mills. The death of Mills, who died at age 68, prompted an 

outpouring of grief. Ghanaians from all walks of life, many dressed in the traditional

possession in 1664. millions 

of slaves were shipped 

to the caribbean and the 

united states through this 

castle before becoming 

the seat of british colonial

elmina Castle 

ten kilometers west of cape 

coast castle, elmina castle 

is the earliest known 



european structure in the 

tropics. built in 1482 by 

the Portuguese during 

early world exploration, 

the castle was taken over 

by the Dutch in 1637, who 

retained control for 274 

years. inside the vast 

fortification is the first 

catholic church in subsahara 

africa. the castle’s 

damp, unlit dungeons 

served as horrific holding 

areas for the human cargo 

of the infamous slave trade.

elmina castle, this fort 

unlike others was not used 

for trading activities but 

provided military protection

Mole is about a 1 hour 

drive from Tamale. Tamale 

is about 600 km from 

Accra (a 13 hour bus ride

the largest of its kind 

in ghana. its savannah 

Woodland and forested 

areas cover a staggering 

space which measures 

just less than 5000 square 

kilometers. you can 

expect to see buffalo, 

antelope, elephants, 

baboons, warthogs, 

hyenas and if you’re very 

lucky, leopard. lions 

have recently been reintroduced 

to the park as 

well. There are also more 

than 250 species of birds 

to enjoy. The park has a 

simple motel with a pool 

located directly above the 

elephants’ bathing pond. 

kakUm national park 

Kakum is about 60 miles 

west of Accra. By road 

the journey takes about 

3 hours 

a dense tropical rain 

forest is home to over 

40 species of larger

250 species living in the

a stroll on the canopy
