travel guide for ghana
Travel in Ghana means many
things to many people, and that is
what makes it such a fascinating
destination. No two people has the
same experience when they come
to visit this incredible place, but
all seem to identify with others
experiences. We laugh at the funny
outcomes of misguided explorers, we
celebrate the unexpected discoveries
we make, and delight at finding
ourselves in new places. This is all
part of the pleasure we get while
roaming the streets of Ghana,
exploring its treasures, and meeting
new people along the way. This is
why Key Ghana Magazine’s innovative
festivals are very important in many ways,
historically, religiously, socially, economically &
culturally. this is a great opportunity to witness
ghana’s rich cultural heritage.
November
Hogbetsotso
First Saturday of the month
Anloga, Volta Region
Celebrated by the Anlo
Ewes, an ethnic group on
the eastern coast of Ghana.
Legend has it that they
escaped from the tyrannical
ruler of Notsie, Ago-Koli,
by walking backwards. In
order to commemorate the
exodus and the bravery of
their traditional rulers who
led them on the journey.
There are many ceremonies
during this festival including
a peace-making period
where all outstanding
problems are supposed to
be resolved. There is also
a purification ceremony
where villages are swept
and rubbish is burnt. This
begins at the Volta Estuary
and goes on for days until
it reaches the Mono River
in Benin. The highlight is
when the chiefs dress in
very colorful regalia and sit
in state.
The Dormaas are reputed
to have brought fire to
Ghana and this legend
is celebrated by, among
many other activities, the
burning of a large bonfire.
This is a period when all the
descendants of the original
Dormass come home to
a grand reunion which
includes a pageant of the
dancing.
events - festivals
Apoo Festival
Techiman & Wenchi in the
Bong Ahafo Region
This festival aims to purify
people and to rid them
of social evil. The word
“Apoo” comes from the
root word “po” meaning “to
reject” therefore “Apoo”
means the rejection of evil,
abominations, calamities,
curses or worries.
Everybody regardless
of social status, creed,
or ethnicity, is allowed
thirteen days of freedom
to voice, often in the form
of proverbs and songs, the
mistakes and wrong-doings
of any person, including
those in high-places like
the Omahene and his wing
chiefs. This festival lasts
one week and includes
a variety of recreational
cultural activity. On the last
day, a Monday, the god Taa-
Mensa of the community is
carried through the whole
town to express gratitude
to all the people who
contributed to make the
festival a success.
This is a war festival which
invoked for protection and
for a bountiful harvest.
President John Atta Mills
Thousands of mourners gathered in August to pay their respects to the late
President John Atta Mills. The death of Mills, who died at age 68, prompted an
outpouring of grief. Ghanaians from all walks of life, many dressed in the traditional
black and red of mourning, thronged Independence Square in Accra to witness
the ceremony, in a show of national unity.
Accra’s evening hot spots light
up. Whether you are looking for a
casual place to kick back or a chic
dance club Accra has it all.
If you are looking for quality live music
spend an evening among locals, expats and
tourists in the outdoor setting of +233 Jazz
Club and Grill Jazz, in North Ridge. Here
you will be exposed to Ghanaian Highlife
where horns and guitar dominate. Food is
offered, but its not the reason to come here.
It’s all about the great jazz and the friendly
atmosphere.
If you’re serious about dancing, a
nightclub is your best bet, like the multilevel
Citizen Kofi. Inside its colorful walls
you will find three floors packed with music,
full bars and different areas with different
vibes, don’t miss the skybar where you get
a bird’s eye view of Accra and the Atlantic
Ocean as you sip on cocktails. Otherwise,
head to the popular Aphrodisiac. Here you
have two great dance floors, two state of the
art bars and a laser show.
People looking for a pint don’t have to look
further than Ryan’s Irish Pub. Inspired by the
cozy pubs of Ireland this intimate pub offers a
vast selection of British beers and pub fare.
Not into the club scene? Champ’s Sports
Bar has plenty of big screen TVs showing
a variety of sports. This is a popular expat
hangout where you can gorge on Western
bar food and or Mexican food and catch
broadcasts of sporting events from around the
world. Order a plate of nachos and a round of
beers and take in the boisterous atmosphere.
