San Diego, Here We Come!!
This year our Annual Business Meeting and Educational Conference will be
held in the south, in the beautiful city of San Diego. Mueller College has
graciously opened their doors to us. Our Keynote Speaker will be incoming
AMTA National President, our own Cynthia Ribeiro. The presenter line-up
promises exciting learning options for
earning up to 12 CE credits in two days.
Class size will be limited, providing an
intimate opportunity to meet close-up with
some outstanding educators. This means
you must register early to ensure getting
into the classes you most want (and to get
the Early Bird discount!) The package
includes several meals, up to 12 CE credits
and is definitely a great deal.
Mueller College
San Diego, CA 92108
AMTA-CA’s annual event offers the opportunity to meet and reconnect with
other professionals, find out what is new and exciting in our profession, learn
how massage is growing statewide, and hear how voluntary certification
through the California Massage Therapy Council has been working to bring
portability into reality in California. It is also time to vote for your half of
your Chapter Board of Directors, those who will work throughout the year
for all members statewide, and to vote for the two California Delegates.
These California representatives will join together at the House of Delegates,
meeting with Delegates from the other 49 states to vote and take to the AMTA
National Board of Directors the best recommendations for Position Statements
and By-Law changes, which come forward from you, the members!
Many hotels are available in San Diego’s Hotel Circle.
Internet search show rooms starting at $59 and up.
Workshops Details - Saturday, March 24
Saturday Morning 9 am to noon
Ron Arbel - Rossiter System of Workouts for Fast Pain Relief: Neck & Shoulder (lecture/hands-on)
Learn powerful, two-person connective tissue stretching techniques in a lively, interactive setting. Wow your clients with newfound
and quick ability to prevent and relieve pain in the neck, shoulder, low back, hips, legs, knees. You’ll leave with techniques, new
ideas for marketing your practice and a whole new way of providing pain relief: use your feet instead of your hands to change
tissue, invite clients to remain clothed, and position clients on the floor, not a table. Engage them in the stretching routine, and
results are faster, deeper and truly astounding, even for long-term chronic pain conditions. Really! Try one simple stretch…and
you’ll be hooked! (Saturday:Neck & Shoulder Sunday: Lower Back & Hips)
John Maguire - 5 Ways to Eliminate Pain with Kinesiology (lecture/hands-on, table needed)
Participants will learn techniques from Touch for Health and Energy Kinesiology to perform simple and easy to apply massage and
acupressure techniques to immediately eliminate back pain, neck and shoulder stress, headaches, and muscle cramps. They will
also learn how to quickly clear stressful emotions of fear, anxiety, overwhelm and resentment by activating stress release reflexes.
Teri Rogers - Alarm Points of the Body (lecture/hands-on, table needed)
Alarm Points: The Front Mu and Back Shu points on the torso of the body are a reflection of what is going on with every organ,
system and meridian of the body. This class will show the location and why they are so important. Students will determine how
to identify, palpate and balance these points.
Dr. Ronda Wimmer - Working with Professional and Olympic Athletes - Eastern Philosophy applied with the
Sports Medicine Team (lecture)
This seminar will discuss the breadth and depth of working with a sports medicine team, integration of Eastern diagnostic philosophy
used in treating injuries and performance enhancement, injury mechanisms and assessments, comparative between diagnostic
methods and treatment, and approach, similarities and differences of working with elite athletes and the general population. If time
permits, we will also address advances and dilemmas in research.
Saturday Afternoon 2:30 to 5:30 pm
Oleg Bouimer - Russina Olympic Sports Massage (hands-on, table needed)
This course is based on several decades of scientific studies of the effects of massage on athletic performance in the former USSR.
It offers a blend of scientific facts presented in understandable terms, and their practical application. It covers pre-event, postevent
and training variations of sports massage. The wide range of kneading techniques is explored as the main tool in working
with muscles. Biomechanics of the therapists are addressed. This is a hands-on course with emphasis on working deeper with less
effort.
Meagan Holub - How to Build a Thriving Massage Practice in any Economy (and on a shoestring budget!)
(lecture)
Meagan shares how you and your Massage Practice can thrive in ANY economy.
John Maguire - 5 Ways to Eliminate Pain with Kinesiology (lecture/hands-on, table needed)
(see Sat. am)
Carole Osborne - Side-Lying Positioning: Maximizing Session Outcomes, Client Comfort and Therapist
Efficiency (lecture/hands-on, table + pillows needed)
Are you ready to refresh your MT practice? Would you like more pregnant women, post-surgical patients, and elders in your
practice? Do your ongoing clients return with the same complaints each session? Learn the benefits and possibilities of side lying
positioning. See how to relax and stabilize your client on her side. Practice body mechanics that make side lying work easier on
you. Explore how to improve access to and increase mobilization of the pelvis, pectoral girdle and spine. Hear how therapists &
businesses have opened new markets by featuring side lying positioning options.
Bruce Schonfeld - Structural -Visceral Integration: Fascial Manipulation for the Liver (lecture/hands-on,
table needed)
As structure and function are inter-related, Structural-Visceral Integration (S-VI) offers a Systems Anatomy perspective regarding
Qi stagnation and physical mobilization of the Liver. Holistic assessment, palpation and the restoration of normal range of motion
to motion restricted anatomy is the focus of this hands-on class. Often the anatomical elephant in the room regarding the therapeutic
equation, the musculo-skeletal system is often in a chronic state of secondary compensation around underlying visceral and
membranous restrictions offsetting alignment and structural integrity.
AMTA-CA Chapter and Unit continuing education courses are approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic
Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) as continuing education Approved Providers. #451819-11
Workshops Details - Sunday, March 25
Sunday Morning 9 am to noon
Val Guin - Facial Massage: 7 Steps to Facial Rejuvenation
(lecture/hands-on, table needed)
Before botox, before plastic surgery, put your face in your own hands!
You will learn Acupressure Face Lift, myo-fascial release for fine lines,
scars and wrinkles, and how to work your entire body by way of the
Micro-systems of the face. Participants will do all of these techniques on
themself and then on a partner.
Meagan Holub - How to Build a Thriving Massage Practice in
any Economy (and on a shoestring budget!) (lecture)
(see Sat pm)
Carole Osborne - Side-Lying Positioning: Maximizing Session
Outcomes, Client Comfort and Therapist Efficiency (lecture/
hands-on, table needed)
(see Sat pm)
Teri Rogers - Jin Shin Chelation (lecture/hands-on, table
needed)
This is an ancient treatment for opening and balancing the energy centers
of the body, grounding the energy, and cross polarizing the client. It is
extremely helpful with hyperactive clients and children; severe and
terminal illnesses; unsettled, nervous or grieving people. Students will
learn techniques that can even be used with people in a coma.
Sunday Afternoon 2:30 to 5:30 pm
Ron Arbel - Rossiter System of Workouts for Fast Pain Relief:
Lower Back & Hips (lecture/hands-on)
(see Sat am)
Val Guin - Body Mechanics for the Massage Therapist
(lecture/hands-on, table needed)
Does this sound familiar to you? “My back and neck are so tired after
I work…” OR “I don’t want to have to ice down my hands and wrists
after each client just to keep going…” OR “I really want the energy and
stamina to have a larger practice…” Val Guin’s Forearm Dance series
is based in Tai Chi, Martial arts, Yoga and Dance. We will use these
principles to address the most common habits and mistakes, which can
make your work less effective and cause you injury. You will be able to
immediately apply these basic body mechanics to the most common tools
and strokes you already use in a Full Body Massage including several
Deep Tissue applications. You will be able to put these techniques into
your practice instantly breaking habits that do not work and creating a
practice that does!
Ariel F. Hubbard - Reflexology the Pain-Free Way (lecture/
hands-on, table needed)
Reflexology is an effective and powerful adjunct modality to massage.
It may be used to help make massage work less difficult, and to help
the client alleviate symptoms of pain and stress in minutes. This session
will cover application of the Egyptian Method, an introduction to zone
theory and the reflex points on the feet, as well as a pain-free Reflexology
protocol.
Remembering
Jeannie Cottingham:
A gracious woman with a spirit
of adventure
by Jan Freibergs, Arlene Estrella, Brenda
Baker, and Karen De Frew Bruning
As a Board member of the Los
Angeles/South Bay Unit for
several years, Jeannie Cottingham
shared her wisdom and guidance
with calm grace. “Service” could
have been her middle name. We
worked together more than just
professionally, but also as a team
who became fast friends. Everyone
could see that Jeannie lived her
spirituality through kindness,
generosity, and integrity. She had
a quietly observant way about her,
and a tactful, thoughtful delivery
of her observations.
After Jeannie resigned from
our Board, we remained friends.
She seemed to be a guiding spirit-
like a warm, caring hug in times
of need. As her illness progressed,
she still wanted to be working
and giving, even though her
capabilities were waning. We all
treasure the times we shared with
this remarkable lady and know
that we have been blessed to have
her in our lives.
Jeannie Cottingham moved on
from her human life on December
27, 2011. She is very much alive,
joyfully, in each of our hearts.
california currents - winter 2012

Government Relations Update by Bernadette Murray
2012 is off to an exciting start for raising the profession of
massage in California. In addition to the Assembly member
Resolution honoring our 50th anniversary as a professional
association by proclaiming January 12, 2012 “California
Massage Therapy Awareness Day,” AMTA-CA is sponsoring
our second annual Legislative Day at the Capitol in
Sacramento on February 28, 2012.
But you do not have to travel to Sacramento to make a
difference legislatively. YOU CAN:
•
•
•
•
Participate in conference calls right in your own
home by joining the Government Relations Task
Force
Visit your Assembly member and State Senator’s
district office so they get to meet YOU, the massage
professional in their district!
Volunteer a hour or two of your time to participate in
upcoming focus groups or take a few minutes to fill
out our online surveys (coming later this year)
Check the State Legislation/Certification tab on the
California Chapter website (www.amta-ca.org) for
current news and links about changes in statewide
certification and more.
Contact Bernadette Murray at 530.661.1950 or at
gr@amta-ca.org for more information.
