STUDIO 550 ART CENTER
Monica Leap has always dreamed of having her own art center, but never believed it would
happen so soon. Where might this new art center be? You may have noticed the somewhat drab
looking building across from the Verizon Wireless Arena while driving down Elm Street. Soon,
the entire building at 550 will be renovated. The bottom oor will be home to the community
art center, gallery/reception area, residency program and café of some sort while the upper
oors will hold 16 apartment units. The new digs will be named the Studio 550 Art Center.
Monica is a studio potter, and explains that “clay is nothing but potential and this building is the
same way”. Monica found her ‘way’ shortly after getting her graduate degree in City Planning
from the University of North Carolina in 2010. With support from her parents and a creative,
unique vision from Monica, her dream is coming to fruition.
The studio is going to operate as a medium to empower, unify, and create community within
the Manchester area. There will be a heavy focus on clay at the beginning as it is Monica’s
expertise. Maybe you’ll be interested in taking a
class? There will be 3 to 4 artist residents (known as the ‘heart of the art
center’) teaching at the studio.
Monica believes Manchester is educated about the arts, as there is already a
thriving arts & culture community. The art center will be a landing ground for
the community; the center will not be able to survive without the support of
the people. Monica says, “There is so much potential with arts in Manchester,
I’m hoping for it to become the ‘Hip Art Town’ and get on the map!”
Be on the lookout for the Studio 550 Art Center to open in mid-September,
but get a sneak peak of their website for more information & to check out
their on-going art gallery www.550arts.com.
We love “Thursday Night Out”, don’t you? Even though
the work- week isn’t yet over, an evening out before Friday
seems to stretch the weekend. Downtown is particularly
captivating this summer, because there are so many
outdoor cafes lining the sidewalks. Walk everywhere, meet
your friends, and choose what suits your mood - this is
destination dining at its best!
Even a casual downtown observer will agree that outdoor dining has exploded – at last
count, more than two dozen pubs and eateries are providing table service outdoors.
There’s something for everyone, ranging from bright bistro tables with colorful umbrellas
to cocktail-style lounge couches accented by lovely sidewalk planters.
After your dinner al fresco, be sure to stroll down to Veterans Park and take in a free
concert, a traditional mainstay of downtown during the summer. Beautiful Veterans
Park is Manchester’s amphitheater, where locals and their guests are treated to talented
entertainers and emerging artists.
We are proud to announce that TD Bank will be presenting the TD Bank Summer
Concerts this year. In an exclusive agreement, “America’s Most Convenient Bank” will
have naming rights to our popular entertainment series. Additional support from the City
of Manchester’s Community Improvement Program, A Market Natural Foods, WXRV
92.5 The River & Hippo Press will help to keep the tradition of free summer concerts in
Veteran’s Park alive and well. We hope you enjoy our new series, and invite you to spread
the word!
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
HOOKED ON DOWNTOWN QUEEN CITY CUPCAKES
Neville Pereira, owner of Ignite Bar & Grille on Hanover Street, knows
a thing or two about the restaurant business. Spotting a lack of seafood
restaurants in downtown, Neville opened up HOOKED right next door
to Ignite this past February. The scrumptious, fresh seafood has had
customers diving in ever since! Neville is the epitome of the ‘Hanover
Street man’ saying “it’s the trendy, fast & upcoming street; it’s becoming
a dining destination”. Next time your downtown or craving Seafood
Cioppino or Aegan Haddock Piccata (most popular dishes) stop into
Hooked, located at 110 Hanover Street.
Hooked is open Monday thru Friday for lunch and dinner, Saturday for
dinner, and closed on Sunday.
MOE’S IS BACK!
Who says you can’t go back?
Once located near the corner
of Elm & Lowell Streets
many years ago, Moe’s Italian
Sandwiches is back with new
owners in their new location at
796 Elm Street. Whether you
call them a sandwich, sub or
hoagie, Moe’s seems to have
somewhat of a cult following
of folks whose mouths water
for a Moe’s Original. “You need
to try one of Moe’s sandwiches
to understand” says Rebekah
Chernoff, who co-owns
Moe’s with husband Andy.
The Chernoff duo, like many
other savvy business owners,
recognized that Manchester
was a fantastic place to operate
a business and downtown was a perfect community to be a part of.
opening on May 16th, they’ve seen the bene ts of choosing a location
in the pedestrian heavy area of Central Elm Street. The amount of foot
traf c, number of businesses surrounding the sandwich shop and the
always revolving parking spaces right outside all have been huge perks for
Moe’s. Next time you need a quick sandwich and want to give your taste
buds a whirl, head to MOE’s at 796 Elm St!
With cupcake mania consuming the states, Chelsea Stoddard couldn’t
believe there were none here in her hometown! With the help of coowner
& husband John Lemay, Stoddard has opened the rst cupcakery
in downtown near Portland Pie in a highly visible, newly renovated spot.
The best part of downtown to Chelsea (left in photo, next to sister
Amelia Shields) is the foot traf c and “it’s good city life”. About a year
ago, she started to test her cupcake talents and soon perfected the art of
making deliciously sinful cupcakes! With over 10 different avors daily,
she has wowed the community and created a sugar ‘buzz’ in the Queen
City. In fact, they often sell out of these creamy dreamy cake gems daily
so be sure to head down to 790 Elm Street, Tues-Sat. when they open up
at 11:30am. To get more info visit www.qcccupcakes.com
