2) Buy your tickets: Advance tickets are available online at mobile.25thstreettheatre.org until 9:00 

a.m. the day of the performance. You can also buy them in advance over the phone (974-7007) or at the box 

office (Fringe Central in the Victoria School portable), or at the venue on the day of performance, one hour before 

showtime. 

3) Showtime! Doors open 10 minutes before showtime at each of the four PotashCorp Fringe Festival

powers up the fun

Canada’s biggest little Fringe. Saskatchewan’s largest 

outdoor street festival. 

Both aspects of the PotashCorp Fringe Theatre Festival, 

running from August 2 to 11, will be even better this year, 

says Bob Wyma, festival producer. 

“The PotashCorp Fringe Theatre Festival turned a profit 

last year, the first time it’s done so in a few years,” he reports. 

“We did this because theatre attendance was up 10 per cent 

from 10,000 to 11,000 tickets sold. Our success also came 

because of increased interest from street vendors.” 

He says this year’s Fringe also will be bigger. “Because of 

demand from companies who love being in Saskatoon, we’ve 

added one production. There are 38 productions this year, 

which means that theatre fans young and old will have their 

choice of 228 show times. That’s about 22 shows every day.” 

Productions will run in four venues – the Broadway 

Theatre, Cosmopolitan Seniors’ Centre, Oskayak Gymnasium 

and the Victoria School Upstairs Auditorium. While the 

Broadway is a natural venue, the PotashCorp Fringe Theatre 

Festival converts the other three sites into theatres for the week. 

“Part of the reason for our success last year was our 

efforts to improve visibility with raised stages and light 

towers,” Wyma says. “Audiences told us how much they 

enjoyed that so we’ll do it again this year.” 

He says excitement for the festival is shown by the number 

of companies wanting to take part in Saskatoon’s Fringe. “All 

of our local, national and international slots were filled by 

December and we had waitlists in every category.” 

The 2012 PotashCorp Fringe Theatre Festival sees 

performers coming from Newfoundland to British 

Columbia, New York to San Francisco, and 

England to Australia. There are comedies, 

dramas, musical theatre and children’s shows 

ranging from one man plays to ensemble 

casts. “The Fringe always has brought 

the best in edgy, experimental theatre,” 

Wyma says. “This year’s roster of plays 

will continue that tradition.” 

Drawing 40,000 plus people to 

Broadway Avenue over the 10 day 

festival, Wyma says the street festival 

also will be much improved. “We’ve 

seen a 100 per cent increase in food 

vendors this year. As a result, we’re 

planning a dedicated food market on 

11th Street. To go with that, we’ll have 

a dining tent to increase the enjoyment of 

people who eat at the Fringe.” 

He adds that another major change will improve the 

hugely popular street performer element. “This year we’ve 

created a schedule. People looking for a specific performer or 

a certain type of act can find it in the StarPhoenix guide. If you 

catch an act you really like early in the festival, you’ll know 

exactly when to come back to see them again.” 

Wyma is also pleased to report that the PotashCorp 

Fringe Theatre Festival has a comprehensive green strategy 

this year. “Buttons on the Bus is back, and we have confirmed 

our partnership with Loraas’ All Green Recycling for full on site 

recycling. Bins will be set up to encourage vendors, performers 

and Fringe patrons to recycle. We’ll also continue moving 

forward with our paperless ticketing systems. This allows 

people to purchase tickets online or via their mobile phones 

and then just show up at the venue ahead of time to check in.”

them, how does one decide what to see? Fringe Preview Night is the answer! Stop 

by the historical Broadway Theatre for this one-night-only preview gala showcasing 

two minute snippets from almost all shows in the program. For just $10, you can see 

a little bit of everything and leave feeling ready for more.

The refinery

Tom Bentley-Fisher, Saskatoon Fringe founder and presently artistic director of Tant 

per Tant, is partnering with 25th Street Theatre to present a staged, public reading 

of the English premeire of Lions by Pau Miró, translated by Elisabet Ràfols. 

Tom will direct the play in Los Angeles in early 2013, Pau Miró’s earlier play, 

Buffalos, was premiered by Tant per Tant in Saskatoon in 2011. Lions is a murder 

mystery that takes place in a Barcelona laundromat. 

This event is a joint initiative of 25th Street Theatre and Tant per Tant, a company 

dedicated to the exchange of international plays. Admission is by donation; 

proceeds will be used to further the artistic goals of both companies. 

Tom is very happy to once again be involved on site at the PotashCorp Fringe!

25th Street Theatre, in partnership with Bremner Duthie and Melanie Gall, is 

pleased to present Ne Me Quitte Pas, a one night only concert event, reliving the 

adventure and inspiration of Edith Piaf, and the life and music of Jaques Brel. This 

fundraising opportunity, offered by these two Fringe artists for 25th Street Theatre, 

will be at the Refinery, 607 Dufferin Avenue. Please join us for a fabulous evening 

featuring these two incredible singing talents.

Spoof night is an annual event that puts performers onstage to satirize and parody 

each other’s shows. It’s a (late) night full of raucuous laughter and celebration.

Buy a Button, ride for free 

Can’t find parking in the Broadway Area? Take the bus 

right to the PotashCorp Fringe Theatre Festival. It only 

costs a dollar! Purchase a retro Fringe button from the 

Fringe Box office for just $1. Wear it anytime you ride 

a bus to the Fringe and you won’t pay another cent. At 

the same time you get to look snazzy with your vintage 

keepsake button. This program is made possible by 

Saskatoon Transit. 

Secure bike storage 

Bike traffic at the PotashCorp Fringe is increasing, and 

we couldn’t be happier! As part of our green initiative, 

The Fringe provides a free Bike Valet service in front 

of Victoria School. Last year saw nearly 1000 bikes 

securely parked over the 10-day festival. This service 

is provided by Eco Friendly Saskatoon and Saskatoon 

Cycles.

program that includes recycling and waste reduction. 

Watch for blue bins set up along the street for recycling 

and added garbage bins to keep Broadway looking 

beautiful. This initiative is part of a new partnership 

with All Green Recycling, a division of Loraas Disposal 

Limited.
