18 | Cuso International Annual Review 2011-12 How we ARe ACCounTABle Cuso international is accountable to many stakeholders: volunteers, donors, partners, the beneficiaries of our work, government agencies and institutional funders. That’s why we are signatory to a number of codes of conduct that govern our practices – commitments to accountability, good governance, financial management, ethical fundraising & communications, transparency and professional management. Cuso International is an affiliate member of the INGO Accountability Charter, a member of several provincial & regional Councils for International Cooperation, and adheres to the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Code of Ethical Principles & Standards. Our Board of Directors has also approved an ‘accountability framework’ that is part of our organization’s day-to-day operations to ensure we adhere to high standards of service delivery and accountability. using donations wisely We know that donors put a lot of faith in our commitment to use their contributions wisely. We deeply appreciate the support and work hard to be fiscally responsible with your donations. Ninety percent of all our funds are spent on direct development programming, with 10% going to administration and fundraising. Fundraising expense as a percentage of all expenditures was just 4%. This means that for every dollar spent, only four cents were spent on fundraising activities, including fundraising salaries. This cost effectiveness of the fundraising program can be attributed in part to the monthly donor program, the generosity of our donors through bequests, new revenue from Run for the World teams in Ottawa, Toronto and kilimanjaro, Tanzania, and through the fundraising efforts of departing and overseas volunteers.
