Keeping kids safe
and helping parents
care for their children
for 110 years
Each day as the sun rises
The great Carl Jung, one of the early disciples
of Sigmund Freud, spent much of his life studying the
symbols and rituals of many cultures, traveling to obscure
corners of the world in pursuit of arcane customs and habits.
Visiting one such agrarian community, Jung spied a strange custom that all
of the adult males would do at the beginning of their day. They would spit
into their hands and hold them up to the morning sun, waiting for them to
dry. Jung was intrigued by this ritual! What significance could it have? What
was the deeper meaning behind the custom? He asked several members
of the tribe, but they were stymied. They had always done it, as had their
fathers, and their fathers’
fathers, and great-grandfathers.
But no one had passed on its
significance or meaning.
There may be days when we
ask, “Why am I doing this?
What’s the purpose? What
difference does it make?” When
we perform mind-numbing,
repetitive tasks, jobs that would
be better done by automatons,
we may feel like those adult
males at a village far away
who spat into their hands and
waited for the sun to dry them,
uncertain of the why.
But the answer is in plain sight
all around us, pinned to bulletin
boards, magnetically stuck to
refrigerators, placed in simple
or fancy frames, jammed into mirror clips, adhered to greasy posters in
factories and mechanical shops, and sandwiched in wallets that ride in
purses or back pockets.
We do whatever we have to do for our children, our families, for the people
we love.
We do whatever we do to provide for them and to make our homes, our
neighborhoods, our cities, our communities better and more secure places
for them, for our children, for our
grandchildren, and in turn for the
children and grandchildren of others.
The annual reporting of a nonprofit
organization is an opportunity
to remind ourselves why we do
what we do and what we hope
to accomplish. It is also a time to
recommit ourselves to the mission,
the dreams of our founders, and the
hopes they embraced. For Bethany,
simply stated, it is to protect kids
and help parents raise their children,
making this community a healthy and
supportive place for children to grow
and families to flourish.
The staff members and volunteers of
Bethany for Children & Families have
lived that mission for yet another year. We figuratively have spat into our
hands and rolled up our sleeves, with a clarity of vision and purpose, doing
the deeds that have made our community in this time and this place better
for children and families.
It makes a difference.
It made a difference in 1898 when Gottlieb Germann found an abandoned
infant in a barn on Arsenal Island and with his wife, began their mission to
care for unwanted children.
And it makes a difference in the 21st Century.
Each day that the sun rises, we’re here keeping kids safe and helping parents
care for their children.
Financial Information
Fiscal Year 2008 provided Bethany for Children
& Families numerous opportunities to positively impact
the community and advance our mission of nurturing children and
strengthening families.
Bethany was able to further diversify its revenue sources in the fiscal year
through the addition of new programs. We were able to strengthen an
already sound financial position by growth within existing programs.
Expenses
Revenue
4
Combining this with
prudent spending,
fiscal year 2008 saw
Bethany meet or
exceed many of its
financial goals as
outlined in our multiyear
strategic plan.
Contemplating the
challenges within our
communities that
still need our hands,
your continued
financial support is
greatly needed.
With your help
we will be able to
keep kids safe and
strengthen every
family.
Helping parents
It may strike one strange that a 110
year-old child welfare agency that has faithfully
served this community by offering traditional
orphanage, foster care, and adoption services now offers car loans. But
there is a startling segue from child welfare to auto loans: a national report
has documented that a family of four
with an annual income of $15,000 is 24
times more likely to have an incidence
of child abuse or neglect than a similar
family earning $30,000 a year.
For the working poor, helping them
obtain better, more predictable, and
long-lasting employment, employment
with benefits such as health insurance,
is a sure way to head off neglect or abuse. But how to help them gain better
employment?
Transportation.
Reliable transportation!
And that is what the Ways to Work Program does. It strengthens families.
It strengthens the community. And in turn, both become better places for
children to grow.
What does this look like?
A 22 year-old single mother of three applied for a loan with Bethany
hoping that she would have an opportunity to gain reliable transportation
to better provide for her children. Prior to receiving the loan, she was
unable to pursue additional education that would help her move into a
better employment situation. After purchasing a car through the Ways to
Work Program, she was able to attend college and complete the additional
education needed to help her advance in her position. Within a few months,
she received a 39% pay increase, enabling her to better provide for her
family and, even more importantly, spend more time with her children.
Lifetime Gifts
Our gratitude goes to the community members and organizations who have
supported the agency’s efforts of caring for abandoned and neglected children and
for reaching out to families in need over many years.
Keeping kids safe
Murena had been a foster parent
for the past two years and wanted to make a
difference in the lives of children by taking them
into her home and caring for them.
She was nervous about becoming a
foster parent, but wanted to share
her life with a child in need. Murena
received her first foster placement,
Sophia, in May 2005. Murena made
sure all of Sophia’s needs were met
and gave her the best care possible.
After several months, Sophia was
reunited with her biological mother.
Murena had become very attached
to Sophia and worried for her safety
and well being. Later, Sophia was
returned to foster care.
Murena was contacted to see if she
was interested in caring for Sophia
again. Sophia returned to Murena’s
care and was given love, security,
consistency, and a stable home.
Murena was able to adopt Sophia
and has made it her mission to love
and support this child from our community.
Because of Murena’s dedication to Sophia and her commitment to create a
healthy and supportive environment for this child to grow, Murena Iniguez
was named our Adoptive Family of the Year for 2008.
Becoming responsible Women
One would think that a pregnancy
prevention program is all about classroom
lectures, STDs, contraceptives, and abstinence.
But Wings to Fly, Bethany’s pregnancy prevention program for adolescent
girls, isn’t just that. It is a group that meets bi-weekly throughout the
school year at United Township High School (East Moline) and Edison
Junior High (Rock Island) and provides an opportunity for young women
to discuss issues that they want and need to talk about...things like
contraceptives, abstinence, STDs, as well as dating, boys, disputes with
peers, problems with parents, and bullying and fights in school. And
woven into those conversations are activities
designed to examine their values and the ways
that they make decisions. Why?
Because adolescents frequently act without
thinking about the consequences. It is better if
they make decisions in a “safe place,” so that
they know what is better for them when they
are face-to-face with a decision. Risky sexual
behavior is one of those decisions, as well as:
choosing friends, avoiding drug use, continuing
education, staying safe on the Internet, avoiding
violence in the hallways of school, and dealing
with a culture that encourages the flaunting of
sexuality bereft of any sense of responsibility and consequence.
Wendy Burrows
Skill Development Specialist
Bethany for Children & Families
Wings to Fly creates an environment in which many feel safe, such as the
girl who was self-conscious about her weight and older-appearance who
expressed her hurt when people saw only the surface and not the good
person inside.
Wendy Burrows, Bethany’s facilitator for one of the groups, observed, “I’m
impressed with how quickly young women can form a bond that allows
them to share such personal experiences and to support one another in
their struggles and decision-making. This program helps them decide who
they want to be and gives them the support to pursue it.”
When Saint Ambrose University
refurbished Cosgrove Hall in late
spring 2008, they offered Bethany
the bunk beds that had been used in the dorm for
many years.
Saint Ambrose, like so many in the community,
recognizes that many items that may end up in a
landfill still have years of good use in them.
Furniture, appliances, clothing, and toys that have
been donated to Bethany over the past year are
given to families in the community that have need
for them.
Of the 105 bed frames that Saint Ambrose University
donated to the cause, only a handful remain. Many
families throughout the community no longer
have their children sleeping on the floor thanks to
the generosity of the school and the other in-kind
donors of Bethany.
Maggie’s Fund
Established in 2005, following
the unexpected death of Margaret “Maggie”
Steinhauser (1999–2005), Maggie’s Fund
supports a variety of programs that nurture
children and strengthen families throughout
our community. Bethany for Children &
Families administers Maggie’s Fund.
In her short life, Maggie, with her parents
and brothers, fostered infants released to
Bethany for adoption.
She welcomed and loved each of the
newborns who spent time in her home.
When it came time for the infants to be
placed in their adoptive homes, Maggie
wanted assurance that “her” babies would
be well cared for. It seemed fitting to create a
fund in her name to help vulnerable children
and families.
One parent who received help meeting a
hospital co-pay wrote,
“I am writing to say thank you for helping
me with my surgery. I was not in the financial
shoes to handle this expense. I am so excited
to get this surgery. My children are also happy
knowing that Mom will be a healthier Mom for
them and be alive much longer to live a happy
and healthy life with them. Maggie is someone
I will never forget. She is indeed an angel.”
July 2007 - June 2008
Looking back and peering forward
named Gottlieb Germann discovered a
baby boy left in a barn on Arsenal Island. He and his
wife made it their life’s mission to care for abandoned
and unwanted children. They went so far as to donate
$30 a month to the cause from the $2 a day that he
earned at the Arsenal.
One hundred and ten years later, the concern that
drove the Germanns to create the Union Mission, later
named Bethany Home, and now Bethany for Children
& Families, still lives. It is their legacy, and the legacy
of the neighbors they enlisted and the countless likeminded
community members through the ensuing
eleven decades. It was a willingness to see problems
through to solution, to see a need and respond to it
that was the lasting legacy of these compassionate
Quad Citians.
The journalist Norman Corwin calls it “a contagion of
good.” Good deeds that spawn other good deeds, a
contagion of good deeds make a difference, one child,
one family at a time.
It is no happenstance that this annual report occurs
during this season of thanksgiving. As a community, we
would be remiss if we did not say thank you to all of
those quiet heroes who support the efforts of caring
for abandoned and neglected children, for reaching
out to families in need throughout the year by their
donations, big and small—and to recognize Stanley and
Bernice Harris, Mollie Montgomery, and Mary Thoms,
quiet heroes who passed from this life in the last year.
Yet in their legacy, they made sure our children and
grandchildren and the many generations that follow
them will benefit from the services of Bethany and a
community that values each child and every family.
It was the simple mission of Gottlieb Germann 110
years ago; it continues to be the mission of Bethany for
Children & Families today.
