SOAR PHOENIX
President’s Corner
Always a team
It has been another rewarding year for our company. The
challenges were great, but our focus and commitment to our
goals got us through the rough seas. This yearend, I would like
to highlight one core value essential to our success: teamwork.
Our successes would not have been possible without our
ability to work together. In our long term successes, teamwork
will still be the foundation. Everyday at Phoenix Petroleum, I
am reminded of the importance of teamwork. Our departments
function as separate units but need the cooperation and help
of each other to get things done. The failure of one affects the
greater team’s ability to deliver. Conversely, each unit’s strengths
and cooperation empowers the team, allowing us to achieve
more together than separately.
Thus teamwork is the embodiment of many qualities. It
means trusting each other’s abilities, respecting opinions and
ideas, recognizing the contributions of each, having the same
values, and working towards a shared vision.
In our big activities such as PNXtreme Sportsfest, Business
Partners’ Appreciation Night, and Annual Christmas Party,
teamwork is of essence. But like most things, teamwork is
revealed in the details, in the small daily work that we do. We
build teamwork too with our daily lunches, First Friday Masses,
and biweekly flag ceremonies.
We call ourselves Team Phoenix to remind ourselves that
we work together and succeed together. As we welcome the
new year, let us all remember that “Together Everyone Achieves
More.”
A prosperous new year to all!
The passion to perform as a team
People. Passion. Performance. TEAM PHOENIX started the year with the commitment
to live out what it believes in. The tremendous task to excel and be the best in the
industry fueled a passion to shine and prove one’s worth. In the process of out-doing
our previous successes, we came to strongly believe in the importance and great role of
TEAMWORK. Yes, PEOPLE had the PASSION to PERFORM as a TEAM.
As ONE TEAM, we performed aggressively to reach our goal, to become Mindanao’s
ONLY choice. And we are not far from that goal. As a people of substance, we had the
humility to bow, acknowledge and learn from each others’ strengths. And as one TEAM
PHOENIX, we shared the victories of our hard earned triumphs. From our various programs
and events such as PHOENIXtremeQuest, Business Partners Appreciation Night, station
openings in Luzon and Mindanao, each member of TEAM PHOENIX worked zealously
to reach its goals.
Our success could not have been achieved without teamwork. And we continue to
uphold the principle of working together to achieve a common goal. TEAM PHOENIX
is akin to a clock whose parts are made up of different pieces of various shapes and sizes.
However, when they are assembled together, they function towards one direction in a
precise movement.
This is one year that we must all be proud of. Despite the challenges and hurdles that we
face as a company, we are confident that we will overcome them. But we must never lose
sight of the vision; never sit back on our achievements. We have just begun.
Thus, Phoenix Petroleum continues to fire ahead in 2009 burning with a common
endeavor for continued realization of our targets and goals.
Together, let us keep this burning desire alive to fuel us to further success. A prosperous
new beginning to all!
Partners’ Appreciation
Night in Davao city,
Dec. 14
In today’s globally
competitive arena,
individuals are expected to
perform their best, but for an
organization to be successful,
collective best performance is
essential.
At Phoenix Petroleum
Philippines, Inc., teamwork
is a core value: “We value
relationships. We achieve our
goals through collaborative
efforts, recognizing the
contribution of team members
and respecting each other’s
opinions and ideas.”
General Manager for
Mindanao Nick Dy says 2008
was a year where teamwork
made growth possible.
“Teamwork is best
exemplified in the operating
and financial performance
of Phoenix in spite of an
extremely difficult industry
situation in 2008,” says Mr. Dy.
“While the industry will see the
major players of the industry
suffer highly significant drops
our Core Values:
Integrity
Excellence
Service
Innovation
Teamwork
Stewardship
in their financial results, and
even be in negative territory,
Phoenix will exhibit increasing
financial results.”
Lani Diaz, Executive
Assistant to the President,
says the last quarter activities
provided great opportunities
for teamwork. For the Business
Partners’ Appreciation Night
and Christmas Party, business
units worked together to
prepare and execute the
program well. Lani also
oversaw the packing of
food and giveaways for the
Christmas Outreach Program,
and was happy to see the
efficiency of the team when it
was most urgent.
“Regular coordination
meetings, company-initiated
seminars like strategic
planning, Sportsfest, and other
team-building activities go a
long way towards developing
the value of teamwork,” says
Lani.
Beyond special events,
teamwork to be imbibed must
exhibit clearly in daily work.
“not waiting to be told to do
something. Rather, you do it
because it is your responsibility.
You lend a hand or do your job
not because of your bosses’
orders but out of your own
initiative.”
Cooperation and care are
essential, says Accounting
Assistant Marichel Uy.
“Teamwork is the cooperative
effort by the members of a
group or team to achieve a
common goal. It is the spirit to
care for others in your group,
to help them, support them
and then win together.”
Like all values, teamwork
when practiced, increases. It
starts with a shared vision,
says Mr. Dy. “We can continue
developing teamwork in the
company by making sure that
our people understand the
vision of the company.”
Individuals and leaders
have their own roles. Each
individual must be committed
to a team effort and live the
tenet that “alone we can do so
little; together we can do so
much,” says Mr. Dy. Leaders
must “lead our people by
example in working toward
the common vision.”
Teamwork is the result
of different values at work:
humility, cooperation, and
respect. Mr. Dy shares the
essentials of a united team:
“Teamwork is when ‘the
whole is greater than the sum
of its parts.’ There is no ‘I’ in
teamwork. It is never worrying
who will catch you when you
fall.
‘“As Michael Jordan said,
‘Talent wins games, but
teamwork and intelligence
wins championships.’”
In this competitive industry,
individuals must prioritize the
company’s goals and work as a
team for Phoenix to fly higher.
Coach Dean Smith to Michael Jordan in his freshman year at UNC: Michael, if you can’t pass, you can’t play.
Baltasar Gracion, Spanish Priest: The path to greatness is along with others.
Coach Phil Jackson: The strength of the team is each individual member...the strength of each member
is the team.
Norman Shidle: A group becomes a team when each member is sure enough of himself and his contribution
to praise the skills of the others.
Richard Wellins, William Byham, Jeanne Wilson: Teams are not ends in themselves; they are a means by
which to achieve other organizational goals.
Unknown: Teamwork divides the task and doubles the success.
Phoenix Pride
Passion is her secret
Passion defines Aileen Joy Adora’s work
ethic. Apple, as she is called by the
team, was named the first PHOENIXpride
awardee for September.
Apple started work in PPPI on
February 12, 2007. Previously, she was
data encoder for seven years at the Bureau
of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
Her work as Depot and Logistics
Coordinator in the PPPI Davao depot
involves multi-tasking and experiences
that constantly challenge her, says Apple.
She assists in dispatching deliveries to
customers, documenting and encoding,
and hands-on training on barge receiving
and tank sounding.
“What I really like most with my job
right now is I can be a sales agent for
JetA1 where for 2008 we got the account
of the US Government and DYNCORP
International under the defense energy
support center,” she says.
How the account was bagged counts
as Apple’s most challenging experience yet
at work. That was in July 2008 at the 25th
floor of the Diamond Hotel in Manila,
where she met Larry Robins, DYNCORP
International Fuels Manager, and Michael
Twyman, representative of the US
Government Defense Energy Support
Center - Zamboanga Base, to sell Phoenix
JetA1 fuel. Apple had no experience in
sales and marketing except for trainings
on sales during college.
In that two-hour meeting with the
Americans, Apple handed them the PPPI
Annual Report and introduced to them
Phoenix. “All my English were used up
that day,” she laughs.
Apple kept in mind what her boss,
Manager for Depot Operations and
Logistics-Davao Alex Suan, told her:
“Apple ayusin mo kasi ikaw lang ang
nakapag-travel at your level at ma-meet
ang mga Americans.”
When the Americans challenged her
if Phoenix could refuel in Cotabato right
away, Apple said yes, Phoenix operates
24/7.
“They gave me the approve signal and
said to me, ‘Aileen, we have good business.’
I’m really happy because of what I did for
the company,” she says.
Apple thus considers it a great
responsibility to monitor the application
as a merchant for the multi-service
aviation so that the US government can
JetA1 operations.
“With the support of the Finance
department, it is really a big deal to us
because without the application we may
not able to get the account,” she says.
“For now we are listed in the directory
of defense energy support center as their
supplier and a multi-service aviation
merchant worldwide.”
Apple appreciates being able to share
her ideas at work. “In my previous job I
didn’t experience having a conference
meeting with the big guys but here I can
attend meetings. It challenges and pushes
me to work hard because anytime they
will call you and ask some data and ask
some ideas.”
She is grateful for the support of the
company, especially her boss Alex Suan
and her two kuya at work, Aris Curayag
and Milky Ofilan. “Top management
is very confident and trusts me and my
colleagues in our department in everything
we do.”
Her family, officemates, personal
dreams, and love for work inspire Apple
to work hard.
“This is the work that I have longed for
– multi-tasking and doing my own strategy
for sales as long as I have my boss guiding
me and coaching me the dos and don’ts.
Having good officemates who support me
and a good boss who acts like my father
inspires me to work hard.”
Says Apple, “If you love your job, you
won’t ask for something as long as you
have management who will support you
all the time.” This, she believes, also keeps
staff loyal.
The most valuable lesson Apple has
learned from PPPI is “to be professional
always and to discipline yourself. Doing
different jobs is a process of learning,” she
says. “When you concentrate and manage
your time well, then you can achieve your
goals.”
PHOENIXpride lessons from Apple & chel
1. Be professional and discipline yourself.
2. Focus on your work and manage your time well.
3. Be positive, humble, patient, and calm even when under pressure.
4. Love your work.
5. Be ready and confident to do whatever task is required.
Phoenix Pride
Positive attitude is the key
On December 20, 2008, PPPI recognized
its first PhoenixPride awardees, Aileen
Joy Adora and Marichel Uy. The
PhoenixPride award is given monthly
as part of the Phoenix Employee
Awards or The Phoenix of Performance
– Recognition for Outstanding Service
and Excellence.
This is the first Phoenix Employee
Recognition Program that acknowledges
and rewards deserving Phoenix
employees for their exceptional
performance, work ethics and support
of the Phoenix Vision, Mission and core
Values.
The PHOENIXpride awardees are
recognized for contributing to the
organization superior service, creative
thinking, and/or demonstrating our core
Values. The special award symbolizes the
impact our people make by bringing the
PHOENIX core Values to life.
The Phoenix of Performance &
Service Award Program encourages all
employees to acknowledge performance
and demonstrate behaviors that
support our vision, mission and core
values; provides flexibility, simplicity
and consistency for recognition across
all business units, support groups and
areas of assignments; and gives Phoenix
a platform to applaud its most valuable
assets – its people.
For October PHOENIXpride Awardee
Marichel Uy, a positive attitude gets
any job done.
Marichel has been an Accounting
Assistant under the Accounts Payable unit
since January 19, 2007. Prior to Phoenix,
she worked as an Accounting Personnel at
Nakashin Davao International, Inc.
As PPPI Accounting Assistant, Chel
is responsible for the timely payment
processing of all the company’s bills. She
likes that she has a part in “providing
responsive financial reports and
information for the management. I also
have the opportunity to know all our
counterparts from Luzon and Visayas.”
In her almost two years’ work, Chel
has learned to handle the challenges that
come with the job. The most challenging,
she says, is the constant pressure and
follow-up from different business units to
do all their rush requests.
Chel says she found it
intolerable at first. “But I
realized that in order for
me to love my job and get
through with it, I have to
be able to deal with them
nicely despite the pressures
coming from them,” she
says. “It helped me to
develop a positive attitude
towards my job and my
colleagues. It also helped
me to learn to become
more patient and calm.”
This she considers her daily
challenge.
Chel’s boss, PPPI
Comptroller Chryss Damuy, appreciates
the attitude and quality that Chel brings
to her work. “She is somebody who works
without counting. She is so dedicated and
always adds value to everything that she
does,” he says. “She is able to deal with
different levels of people very effectively.
She is very patient yet assertive.”
Mr. Damuy notes that even with all the
deadlines and loads of work, Chel manages
to finish her work promptly “with all her
patience shown on the expression of her
face.” “She always smiles even with all the
pressure.”
Indeed, humility and patience are
valuable lessons Chel has learned from
work, as well as striving to be better in
everything she does.
PHOENIXpride October awardee Marichel
Uy at work
chel accepts her PHOENIXpride award from President & cEO
Dennis Uy and VP for Human Resources Sandee Elecerio
She takes pride in being part of a
fast-growing and prestigious company
like PPPI. “The company gives a sense of
importance to us as partners. Benefits (life
and health insurance), meal allowance,
supportive heads, approachable and
generous Chairman and President...what
can you ask for?”
Chel is inspired by her family’s love
and support. “They give me strength and
happiness to pursue my dreams and work
harder,” she says. “Above all I am inspired
by God, My Shepherd, who continues to
shower us countless blessings.”
She shares these inspiring words from
American church leader David O. McKay:
“Let us realize that the privilege to work
is a gift, that power to work is a blessing,
that love of work is success.”
A press conference was held with the Davao media at Apo
Discover the 90/10 Principle.
It will change your life (at least the way you react to
situations).
What is this principle? 10% of life is made up of what happens
to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react.
What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of
what happens to us.
We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will
be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver
may cut us off in traffic.
We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different.
You determine the other 90%.
How? By your reaction.
You cannot control a red light. but you can control your
reaction. Don’t let people fool you; YOU can control how you
react.
Let’s use an example.
You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter
knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no
control over what just happened.
What happens next will be determined by how you react.
You curse.
You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over.
She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your
spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge
of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and
change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has
been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school.
She misses the bus.
Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to
the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late,
you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit.
After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away,
you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without
saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you
find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As
it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward
to coming home.
When you arrive home, you find small wedge in your
relationship with your spouse and daughter.
Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning.
Why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?
The answer is “D”.
You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How
you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day.
Here is what could have and should have happened.
Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You
gently say, “Its ok honey, you just need to be more careful next
time”. Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new
shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look
through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She
turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet
Living the 90-10 Principle
the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are
having.
Notice the difference?
Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended
different.
Why?
Because of how you reacted.
You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens.
The other 90% was determined by your reaction.
Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle. If someone
says something negative about you, don’t be a sponge. Let the
attack roll off like water on glass. You don’t have to let the negative
comment affect you!
React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reaction
could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out
etc.
How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic? Do you
lose your temper? Pound on the steering wheel? A friend of mine
had the steering wheel fall off) Do you curse? Does your blood
pressure skyrocket? Do you try and bump them?
Who cares if you arrive ten seconds later at work? Why let the
cars ruin your drive?
Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it.
You are told you lost your job.
Why lose sleep and get irritated? It will work out. Use your
worrying energy and time into finding another job.
The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the
day. Why take outpour frustration on the flight attendant? She
has no control over what is going on.
Use your time to study, get to know the other passenger. Why
get stressed out? It will just make things worse.
Now you know the 90-10 principle. Apply it and you will be
amazed at the results. You will lose nothing if you try it. The 90-10
principle is incredible. Very few know and apply this principle.
The result?
Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials,
problems and heartache. We all must understand and apply the
90/10 principle.
It CAN change your life.
SOAR PHOENIX 21
In 2006, the husband and wife team of
Mico and Mylene Aquino were looking
for a good business opportunity.
They saw it in a Phoenix Petroleum
station being constructed in Diversion
Road, Ma-a, Davao City.
So they called PPPI President Dennis
Uy to express interest in the station. “But
there was already a dealer,” said Ms.
Aquino. “After one month, (PPPI AVP
Sales-Mindanao) Edgar Alerta called for
me to take over.”
The Aquinos became one of the
first of increasing Phoenix dealers in
September 2006. Besides seeing that it
would be a profitable business, “we believe
in the company,” the couple said. In 2006,
Phoenix Petroleum was still a new player
in the oil industry, with only a dozen
stations opened in Southern Mindanao
and Davao that time.
They like that “Phoenix is a growing
company, and dealers are treated as
business partners,” said Ms. Aquino.
The couple’s confidence in the
company paid off. Under their company
Phoenix Motorist Haven*FA, the Aquinos
bested other dealers to receive the PPPI
Award of Excellence in Retail for 2008.
They also placed second in the Sales
Achievement Award. They and other
outstanding dealers were awarded during
the Business Partners’ Appreciation Night
on December 14 in Davao City.
The Phoenix Ma-a station is lucky not
just for the Aquinos. In June, a jeepney
driver dropped his raffle ticket there for
the Phoenix “Tank-Full of Life Multi-
Caravan of Prizes” promo and won the
grand prize of a multicab. Noel Ogdoc
said that Phoenix Ma-a was an accessible
stop in his route.
For now the Aquinos operate one
station, but they are willing to expand
given a good site. Aside from the Phoenix
dealership, they are also engaged in real
estate leasing and hotel business.
The secret to their success is not
really a secret. Ms. Aqunino credits their
achievements to “hard work and handson
management” – proving that in life as
in work, the best rewards come from effort
without short cuts.
