ENL Agribusiness, which constitutes the Group’s foundation
stone, is engaged in sugar-cane cultivation on approximately
5,000 hectares of land, mainly at its domains of Savannah
and Mon Désert-Alma. Both these estates have invested in
preparation of their land for mechanised field operations; the
sugar cane harvested is sent, ready for processing, straight
from the fields to the respective region’s central sugar factory.
ENL Agribusiness has also put in place a diversification
programme and is actively involved in other agro-industrial
production, including:

• flowers and ornamental plants

Activities
Situated on the very fertile soils of the
southern region, Savannah has sugar cane as
one of its main agricultural activities: 2,600
hectares of land are under cane cultivation
in the south of the island. Field operations
have been substantially mechanised and a
harvest of approximately 200,000 tonnes of
sugar cane is reaped annually.
In addition, Savannah has branched into
cattle farming, the cultivation of food crops
as well as tropical flowers and roses for local
and foreign markets.
Mon Desért-Alma has been officially
amalgamated to Savannah on the 30th of
December 2009. This merger has increased
the company’s land under cultivation to
5,600 hectares.
This company is listed on the Stock Exchange
of Mauritius.
The location of the lands of the amalgamated
company are complementary for future
developments. Most of the lands in the
southern region are suitable for agriculture
while a large part of the ones situated in the
centre are prone to property development.
The company will now produce
approximately 380,000 tonnes of sugar
cane, 1.300 tonnes of potatoes, 2,200
tonnes of chicken, and a substantial amount
of vegetables.
Two main nurseries will soon reach their full
potential.
The amalgamated company makes
an optimum use of a common pool of
employees & equipment, has a broader
shareholder base and a stronger balance
sheet.

Activities
Agrex Ltd has been created in 1986
in order to endorse the promotion and
sales of the horticultural products of ENL
agribusiness.
One of the first missions assigned to the
company was to put in place a marketing
and distribution strategy for Anthurium
& Orchids Ltd and Soled Ltd, two
companies which were already engaged
in the production of Anthurium flowers and
Orchids for the last 25 years.
The experience has been very successful
and Agrex has acquired over the years a
worldwide reputation in the Anthurium
fresh cut flower business as a result of
its well thought marketing approach, its
quality and its reliability.
The company owns today an extended
portfolio of customers on both local
and foreign markets. About 300,000
Anthurium stems are sold every year on
the local market and around 1,000,000 are
exported to wholesale distributors based
in 8 different countries (Italy, Japan, Hong
Kong, France, USA, Canada, Dubai and
Reunion Island).
Thanks to its vision and wise investments
in the most exclusive varieties, the team
has been able to develop a competitive
edge and is proud to offer one of the world’s
widest choice of Hybrid Anthuriums’ colors
and shapes with more than 40 different
varieties.
Due to its rich experience in the floriculture
business Agrex is now also promoting on
the local market the roses produced by
Savannah under the brand “Les Roseraies
de Savannah”.
In the same vision of expanding its
offer, Agrex has also advised the other
companies of the Agribusiness cluster
to make additional investments in the
production of other species of exotic
flowers as well as in foliages.
indoor and Outdoor plants
Savannah has put in place plants
nurseries in order to respond mainly to
the requirements of esp landscapers, the
ENL Agribusiness landscaping arm.
Agrex is presently exploring the local
market potential for indoor and outdoor
plants and thus, opportunities for export in
the gulf region will be studied.
Palm tree heart
The management of ENL Agribusiness
strongly believes in the business potential
for fresh palm tree heart.
Also know has “palmito” in some countries,
the fresh palm tree heart is a vegetable
harvested from the inner core and growing
bud of certain palm trees. This is a very
exclusive product because harvesting
the palm heart kills the tree. It is a main
ingredient often used in fine cuisine
restaurants. The most simple dish made
from palmito is a fresh salad also known
as the Millionaires’ salad.
Savannah has already grown 50,000 palm
trees on its land and these trees will arrive
at maturity in a few months. Agrex is getting
prepared and will soon start to market this
delicacy in the restaurants and hotels
around the Island.
