Dear Friends, Our mission is to connect donors who care with causes that matter. To accomplish our mission, we encourage those who have been blessed with material resources to consider the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley as a vehicle to meet the needs of our communities. As a public foundation, we offer advantages over private foundations. These include oversight of investment management, flexibility in making distributions and, at times, tax advantages. Our minimum fund size is just $10,000. What a terrific opportunity to create your own Foundation. This annual report highlights just two donors who recognized needs in our community and were able to establish funds with the Community Foundation. In just five years, we have grown from 82 funds with assets of $16 million to 119 funds with assets of over $23 million. Susie Nelson, our new Executive Director, will provide you with some insights regarding our activities over the past year. We are pleased to have Susie direct our activities and expect that her talent will contribute to meeting our goals. Our board of directors has been very supportive in the past year, and we hope that they will continue to remain dedicated to meeting the needs of our communities. Jerome B. Schmitt President, Board of Trustees Dear Friends, 2008 was a great year for the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley! From our first fund, the FOPA Scholarship Fund, to the new funds established just this year, the foundation continues to be a contributor to the quality of life in the Ohio Valley. The foundation is proud to announce 10 new funds joining this year, for a variety of community benefits including scholarships, recreation, historic preservation, and support for young mothers and new families. Connecting donors who care with the causes that matter is what we continually strive to do each day. One of the perks of this position is being constantly reminded of the generosity of people in the Ohio Valley who choose to give back through the Community Foundation. People choose to give for different reasons. That is one of the great things about a community foundation–the personalization. Remembering a loved one in a special way…designating a charity that is important to you…making scholarships to students who otherwise would be unable to attend college…creating an endowment fund for an organization doing good work…making grants to causes that meet the changing needs of our community. These are all reasons for creating a fund with a community foundation. Through the generosity of our donors, the Community Foundation was able to distribute nearly $70,000 in scholarships this year to more than 90 students. We made $1.2 million in grants to nonprofit organizations that are at the forefront every day, working to make life better for so many people in our community. In closing, I wish to thank the foundation’s board of trustees for giving me the opportunity to have a role in the development and growth of our community. I also sincerely thank each of our donors for putting their confidence and trust in the Community Foundation.
