SUPPORTING THE POOREST AND TAXING THE RICHEST
Bishop Nicholas has chosen a Christian Aid-sponsored project in Guatemala and a Mothers' Union-sponsored project in Uganda for his Harvest
Appeal this year. Both are designed to help people who are among the poorest to grow more and better food for their families
and communities, in harsh conditions.
He is hoping giving will exceed the record £28,347 sent off from last year's Appeal for water-related projects in Zimbabwe and
Bangladesh. 'Although times are hard here in England, they are much, much harder in many places abroad,' he said. 'Jesus said that it was more
blessed to give than to receive, and I wish the people of our diocese every blessing as they give in response to this year's
Harvest Appeal.'
The new Appeal emerged as the Diocesan World Development Group encouraged support for Christian Aid's campaign to tighten
international law countering international tax abuse by global companies.
'Not only individuals but whole countries can be ripped off by companies which trade on a world-wide basis,' said Group member Rev
Frank Kendall. 'Such companies can declare their profits in any country they wish, and often deliberately declare the whole of them in countries
with low company tax regimes- the so-called “tax havens”.
'This means that the countries where the goods being traded are actually produced are unfairly deprived of tax revenue they badly need
for hospitals, schools and other things vital for their people's welfare.' Internet advice is available at www.christianaid.org.uk/tax The Group is
urging increasing purchase of products carrying the Fair Trade mark, guaranteeing a fair return to producers in poor countries.
So if you are
Many Christians want to be involved in aware of people
get it. It's not about trying to make our cope with church as
services more attractive, or reviewing the it is, or are just not interested, what can you do? Start by listening to
way we do things, or being more those people and loving and serving them. Only then can you really
hospitable. All this should be natural in begin to build community and explore discipleship – this could take
the life of any church.
quite a time because fresh expressions are far from a ‘quick fix’. Church
may then slowly start to take shape but, be warned, it might not look like
In reality a fresh expression of church is a missional form of church
When Archbishop Rowan launched Fresh Expressions in 2004 he
wanted Christians to leave the security of the parish church, make or
strengthen friendships and slowly form church among colleagues,
neighbours or friends. It really is a case of getting out and staying out
and growing new forms of church, not necessarily to increase
attendance at more conventional churches.
There are now at least 1,000 fresh expressions linked to the
Church of England and around 30,000 people attend them monthly
who don't go to traditional regular services. These fresh
