Supporting Initiatives Designed for the Public Good
The Community Foundation provides a tremendous
vehicle for local philanthropy, helping generous
donors to return more than $850,000 to worthwhile
projects and programs throughout the Upper Ohio
Valley in fiscal 2005. However, the benefit of
having a local community foundation is so much
more than just the money.
The Community Foundation is pleased to provide
fiscal sponsorship services to the Wheeling
Skatepark Committee as they endeavor to enhance
the quality of life in our region by spearheading
construction of the first public concrete skatepark
in the State of West Virginia. Our association with
the Skatepark Committee provides donors with a
vehicle for tax-deductible contributions to the cause
and ensures sound professional management and
oversight of the funds raised.
As of the date of publication of this annual report,
the Wheeling Skatepark Committee was preparing
to put the construction of the skatepark out to bid,
with construction completion targeted for late fall
2006. It’s been a 5-year journey since 12-year old
Nathan Mey, of Wheeling, approached Wheeling
City Council with his request for construction of a
local skatepark. Since that time, nearly $300,000
in grants, contributions and in-kind products and
services have been gathered to make this dream
a reality.
