Bus Trip – Beaumont on January15 The next bus trip will be to Beaumont where we shall tour the St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, have lunch on your own at the Brazos Cattle Company restaurant, and visit a museum. According to the Beaumont “Visitors Guide” the cathedral, “built over 100 years ago, is one of the most resplendent houses of worship in southwestern United States. In 2006 Pope Benedict XVI elevated the church to an honored title of cathedral basilica, recognizing the historic, artistic and religious significance of the site.” Board the bus at 7:30 am for an 8:00 departure. Please sign up for the trip by January 10 and pre-pay $5.00 to give as a donation to the basilica. Next Trip – February 6 to Danevang Danevang is a Danish community that will include a tour and a lunch with Danish food. The cost of this trip, $25.00, includes both the tour and the lunch. More information will be in the next bulletin. Teacher for Beginning Italian Needed If you would like to teach a group of eager and interested adults who like to have fun while learning, we invite you to teach a class of beginning Italian. In doing so, you would join the many other volunteers who give of their time (l-2 hours a week) teaching various kinds of subjects in the area of Adult Life Ministries. AGENDA FOR THE MEETING The program will include prayer, reflection, discussion, and basic instruction on moral and ethical principles related to end-of-life issues. Al-Anon Al-Anon meets Tuesdays for book study and Thursdays for discussion, at 7pm, room 102, Middle School Bldg. Al-Anon is a hopeful and understanding group for anyone needing help because of alcoholism. Anyone affected by someone else's drinking is welcome. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflicting schedules and commitments, a young man, testing the limits, has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big city. Mary and Joseph search frantically, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and scholars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious center of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gathered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. Still, everyone longed to journey to the temple to participate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obligations of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tradition. There has always been an appreciation in Christianity for the value of pilgrimage—the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life’s journey to God, and a sense of connection to important events in our family history. During the Christmas season, many of us undertake pilgrimages to the family homestead for festival meals, to the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights. There are few better days than this in our calendar for spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Paluch Co. 7 Taizé Night Prayer Sunday Night-Prayer (Compline) of the Roman Church using the beautiful music of the Community of Taizé, in France. Next Sunday, January 6, 7:30 P.M. First Sunday of the Month Here at St. Vincent de Paul Church We will offer Night Prayer (Compline) of the Roman Church, using the beautiful music of the Community of Taizé in France. Lasting just over a half-hour, it is a beautifully peaceful prayer experience with which to conclude one’s Sunday night in contemplative song. Night Prayer, as part of the “Divine Office” is part of the daily cycle of prayer, prayed for centuries by Priests, Deacons, Religious Brothers and Sisters (and many lay persons) through out the world. Taizé sung prayer is a contemplative service of song and scripture using the chants of Taizé. At St. Vincent we have taken the actual prayers/texts of “monastic” Night Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours (the Roman Breviary) and fit them with much of the beautiful music of Taizé.
