Letter From The Pastor
Dear Parishioners:
Culture can be a great help or hindrance to us. A culture that does not respect women will cause great harm
not only to the women, but also to those who inflict harm on others. On the other hand, culture can lift up those
who choose to listen. One is able to follow a society of justice to greater respect of others, greater generosity, etc.
When a society chooses to live in a spirit of faith, all will benefit, providing that that faith worships a God who
is just and loving. “We should not impose our beliefs on others!” Well, yes we should when our beliefs are correct.
For example, we believe that all women and men are of equal value before God and others. We ought to impose
that because we cannot coexist with those who do not believe it to be true.
Another example is our teaching that marriage is meant for one man and one woman. Some would have us
change the law to provide for marriage between same sex persons. If two people love each other, why not allow
it? Marriage is about more than love. If we were to change the definition to allow any two people to marry, where
do we stop? — why not three? — why not siblings? — parents and children? Do we truly want marriage to be a
matter only for the state to determine?
We now see some of the consequences of this choice coming to fruition. At least one state has removed the
terms of husband and wife from the marriage licenses. At least one state now allows a birth certificate to include
three parents. I don’t know if four or more are allowed, but why not?
Grounding marriage only in human love will set up only human standards.
God’s plan will be cast aside for a human standard that applies to a very few
people. The consistent findings of surveys indicate 2% to 4% of the population self
identify as same sex attracted. Contrast this to the portrayal on many popular
shows that show a much greater number.
Today God proposes to us the Holy Family. Holy Scripture begins with the
marriage of Adam and Eve and ends with the heavenly marriage of Christ the
Bridegroom and his Bride, we the Church. None of this is by accident or mere
evolutionary forces. The hand of the Divine has guided the human heart and soul
for too long.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has announced a
campaign of prayer and fasting for the “rebuilding of a culture favorable to life and
marriage and for increased protections of religious liberty.” Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco,
chairman of the USCCB Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage writes, “It’s not meant to be
another program but rather part of a movement for life, marriage, and religious liberty, which engages the New
Evangelization and can be incorporated into the Year of Faith.”
The campaign has five components:
• cathedrals and parishes are encouraged to hold a Eucharistic holy hour for life, marriage, and religious
liberty on or near the last Sunday of every month
• individuals and families are encouraged to pray the Rosary daily, “especially for the preservation of life,
marriage, and religious liberty in the nation”
• priests are encouraged to include prayers for life, marriage, and religious liberty among the intentions
during the Prayer of the Faithful at Mass
• “recognizing the importance of spiritual and bodily sacrifice in the life of the Church,” the bishops
encourage fasting and abstinence from meat on all Fridays
• “in light of the August 1, 2013 deadline for religious organizations to comply with the HHS mandate,” a
second Fortnight for Freedom will be held in July
As we celebrate this feast of the Holy family, let us strive to mold our own families to follow the example of
Jesus, Mary and Joseph. They are the truest role model.
• The First Holy Communion Parent meeting will be
FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY
The family is the privileged setting where every person
learns to give and receive love… To enable this, it
receives abundant help from God in the sacrament of
Matrimony, which brings with it a true vocation to
holiness.
… If children see that their parents — and, more
generally, all the adults around them — live life with
joy and enthusiasm, despite all difficulties, they will
themselves develop that profound "joy of life" which
can help them to overcome wisely the inevitable
obstacles and problems which are part of life… To hand
down the faith to children, with the help of individuals
and institutions like the parish, the school or Catholic
associations, is a responsibility which parents cannot
overlook, neglect or completely delegate to others…
The language of faith is learned in homes where this
faith grows and is strengthened through prayer and
Christian practice.
Pope Benedict XVI, taken from the address of the Holy
Father at the Vigil of the 5 th World Meeting of Families
Vacancy by J.K. Rowling - Amazon's summary: When Barry Fairbrother
dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford
is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled
market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty
façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with
their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with
their pupils… Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat
left by Barry on the town’s council soon becomes the catalyst for the
biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election
fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? Blackly
comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy
is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults. (Washington Post:
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Today’s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us
this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflicting schedules
and commitments, a young man, testing the limits,
has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big city.
Mary and Joseph search frantically, only to find the child
Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and scholars
of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom.
In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious
center of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gathered
in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer
and study. Still, everyone longed to journey to the temple
to participate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obligations
of the law that could only be done there. On this feast,
we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing
with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely
grounded in the ways of faith and tradition.
There has always been an appreciation in Christianity
for the value of pilgrimage—the journey to holy
places that is a symbol of our life’s journey to God, and a
sense of connection to important events in our family history.
During the Christmas season, many of us undertake
pilgrimages to the family homestead for festival meals, to
the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps
even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights.
There are few better days than this in our calendar for
spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage
to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one
gets left behind! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Next Sunday, January 6, 7:30 P.M.
First Sunday of the Month
Here at St. Vincent de Paul Church
We will offer Night Prayer (Compline) of the
Roman Church, using the beautiful music of
the Community of Taizé in France. Lasting
just over a half-hour, it is a beautifully peaceful
prayer experience with which to conclude
one’s Sunday night in contemplative song.
Night Prayer, as part of the “Divine Office”
is part of the daily cycle of prayer, prayed for
centuries by Priests, Deacons, Religious
Brothers and Sisters (and many lay persons)
through out the world. Taizé sung prayer is a
contemplative service of song and scripture
using the chants of Taizé. At St. Vincent we
have taken the actual prayers/texts of
“monastic” Night Prayer from the Liturgy of
the Hours (the Roman Breviary) and fit them
with much of the beautiful music of Taizé.

St. Vincent de Paul 2013 Gala and Auction Honorees Kathleen and Howard Lederer
Kathleen and Howard Lederer are native Houstonians. Their parents attended Rice and Texas. Mary Sue Giesberg Blazek and Gene
Howard Lederer served as presidents of the Charity Guild of Catholic Women. Hugh Blazek and Al Lederer worked as engineers in
Houston’s petrochemical industry. Kathleen attended St. Peter’s School, St. Anne’s School and graduated from St. Agnes Academy in 1971.
Howard attended St. Michael’s School and graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1971. The couple met at a St. Thomas sock hop.
The two went on to the University of Texas where Kathleen graduated in three years with a double major and was hired as a teacher by
AISD. The couple married on December 27, 1974. Howard finished his last semester of UT business school and then they moved back
home to Houston. They attended Holy Ghost church in their early marriage years until they bought a home in Linkwood and began
attending St. Vincent de Paul when Msgr. Dexter George was pastor.
Friends Kay and Andy McStay were leaders in the parish at the time and asked the Lederers to get involved in the parish, and that was the
start of their strong commitment in supporting St. Vincent de Paul. Kathleen and Howard had their first child Martha Anne in 1982, next
came Emily Kathleen in 1983 and then Claudia Rose in 1985. All three daughters graduated from St. Vincent de Paul School and St. Agnes
Academy, followed by Texas, Yale and Alabama.
In 1985, Msgr. James Jamail became pastor. At this time money was tight in the parish and the facilities were in poor condition. Howard
recalls, Msgr. Jamail believed in the Power of Christ’s Love-… “Love ruled and Msgr. Jamail was wonderful”. Howard served multiple
years on the finance committee. After an exchange with parish attorney Mike Donohue, the Lederers agreed to serve as campaign co-chairs
if asked. The next day Msgr. Jamail called and the 50 th Anniversary Campaign began. Reminiscent of the enthusiastic parish-wide effort to
found the parish in the 1940’s-1950s, the campaign began with a thorough needs assessment. A master plan was drawn up by our Physical
Plant and Architectural Committee based upon broad input by parishioners, diocesan officials and community entities.
The Lederers have a deep appreciation for the many team captains and volunteers they worked with on the Capital Campaign. Howard says,
“There was great excitement and enthusiasm among our committees and in the church”. The campaign was run out of an office in the old
rectory by Dan Docherty of DDI consultants, with Josie Saul as coordinator. Sister Virginia O’Donnell also played an active role. Kathleen
says, “It was time to rebuild the parish and to get people to know each other”. The campaign team decided they would go into each
parishioner’s home and ask what their needs were while counseling them on their campaign pledge. This is how the church’s ministries and
organizations were invigorated that remain in place today.
The 50 th Anniversary Capital Campaign met and exceeded all of its goals. St. Vincent de Paul was transformed into a parish with a
leadership position in our diocese. Howard recalls, “It was like Camelot. Church attendance was high. People were packed at the back of
the church socializing for twenty minutes after Sunday Mass”. A new middle school and library building, administration building,
maintenance building and scout house were erected, and most parish buildings were renovated by 1992. The parish family center was added
in 1996 under a second campaign phase led by Louise and Bob Parsley. Penny & Paul Layne and Shelly Starr & David Martin also chaired
campaign additions that followed on that original master plan.
In 1992, Kathleen was diagnosed with cancer. During the months she underwent surgery and chemotherapy, the Lederers experienced an
outpouring of love for Kathleen and their family. Her hospital room and their home overflowed with flowers and meals sent by their larger
St. Vincent’s family. After the completion of her treatment in 1994, Kathleen began teaching at our school when their youngest daughter
Claudia entered 3 rd grade. She taught 2 nd grade there for three years with Anne Malone. Some other teachers that were there at that time and
still remain at the school today are Carolyn Sears - Principal, Joey Mann, Jan Berry and Diane Hughes. Kathleen also served as PTO
secretary, on the School Board and was a Girl Scout Leader at SVdP. She was involved in the Mother’s Club while her daughters attended
St. Agnes and Howard served on the University of St. Thomas and SAA boards.
Howard works with varied business interests, but likes to talk about Atec, Inc. in Stafford. Atec manufactures the cryogenic flow control
valves for the final stage rocket engine that puts U.S. satellites in orbit. Atec’s valves are on the moon and in deep space. Atec also fields jet
engine test systems for the U.S. military and its allies, as well as many airlines, helicopter services and MROs.
Kathleen and Howard believe that the greatest gift is doing, before giving. Their dedication and work at the church and school is a
testament to this belief. Howard says, “We can’t all go on a mission in South America or Africa. We have a great chance to mission right
next door and across the street. We can find Christ’s face in our neighbors.” The Lederers are strong believers in parish involvement and
Catholic education. Howard remembers, “Jim Jamail always said ‘charity should begin at your parish’- he was right.” Kathleen feels “It is
truly a gift to have faith instilled into every aspect of a school day.” They currently reside in Southside Place and their family has grown to
include two sons-in-law, Ted Pataki married to Emily, with grandson Stephen, and Eric Saenz recently married to Claudia.
COMPLACE A DIOS
Barron (Word on Fire Ministries).
padre, madre, hijos e hijas.
primos, primas, compadres, comadres, suegros, suegras y
fábricas a trabajar.
esposa. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
