have developed a new three to five year Strategic Plan with<br />
EDVP’s vision statement in mind:<br />
<strong>Domestic</strong> violence is a human rights issue. <strong>Eastside</strong><br />
<strong>Domestic</strong> <strong>Violence</strong> <strong>Program</strong> envisions a world in<br />
which every person lives in a safe environment, free<br />
from oppression and with the opportunity to thrive.<br />
We will need your help to ensure our important work<br />
continues to meet the needs of our community. EDVP<br />
provides life-saving specialized services to those in need:<br />

EDVP’s goal is to help every person that calls the<br />
24-Hour Crisis Line with innovative solutions to<br />
meet their varied needs.<br />
EDVP helps move families from homelessness to<br />
permanent housing and self-sufficiency with our<br />
continuum of housing services.<br />
EDVP serves marginalized populations with the<br />
assistance of our bilingual staff and through our full<br />
Latina <strong>Program</strong>.<br />
EDVP is proud to partner with the LGBT<br />
Community.<br />
EDVP is one of the only agencies on the West Coast<br />
to provide dual assistance at My Friend’s Place with<br />
both domestic violence and substance abuse services.<br />
EDVP provides mental health counseling and legal<br />
advocacy; women, teen and children’s support groups<br />
and education and training to the community.<br />

We are seeing an increase in the need for our services while<br />
facing decreases in funding due to King County budget<br />
reductions. When resources do not exist for victims to receive<br />
domestic violence services, they are left with the choice of<br />
homelessness or returning to their abuser. We are faced with<br />
the challenge of turning away victims that need our help.<br />
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports:<br />
• 1,200 deaths and two million injuries to women from<br />
intimate partner violence each year.<br />
• On average, three women are murdered by their<br />
husbands or boyfriends each day in this country.<br />
• 15.5 million U.S. children live in families in which<br />
partner violence occurred at least once in the past year,<br />
and seven million children live in families in which<br />
severe partner violence occurred.<br />

Dear Friends<br />
“One size fits all” is not a term<br />
used at <strong>Eastside</strong> <strong>Domestic</strong><br />
<strong>Violence</strong> <strong>Program</strong>. We take great<br />
pride in our commitment to meet<br />
the specific, ever changing needs of<br />
our diverse clientele. We have long<br />
had the vision of providing options<br />
and opportunities to survivors of abuse who feel like they have<br />
no options, no hope. As we grow stronger in our commitment<br />
to diversity and meeting the needs of marginalized populations<br />
we understand the complexities of individual cultures,<br />
communities and genders as they face the challenge of leaving<br />
a violent home and partner. The many barriers are extremely<br />
challenging and become more complex for a person with<br />
special needs as they try to navigate a system not set up with<br />
them in mind. Whether it is a language barrier, cultural barrier<br />
or gender barrier everyone’s cry for help is unique.<br />
EDVP continues to grow and change to meet those needs.<br />
We have committed ourselves in our current strategic plan to<br />
help those that are oppressed and to continue our own internal<br />
growth to address the complexities that surround us. We are<br />
positioned well for that growth. Our emergency shelter My<br />
Sister’s Home (see the enclosed article) is a scattered site facility<br />
that can accommodate those others can’t – we serve large<br />
families, people with special cultural needs, men and members<br />
of the GBLT community. We truly believe it is not enough to<br />

<strong>Domestic</strong> violence is pervasive. We work to break the cycle<br />
of violence today and in future generations. The cost to our<br />
community is devastating. Families are destroyed by domestic<br />
violence not only financially and emotionally but the costs<br />
accrue for generations. Nationally, the cost of domestic<br />
violence exceeds $5.8 billion per year in direct health care<br />
expenses, lost productivity and lifetime earnings.<br />
The need for services at EDVP has increased. EDVP’s turn<br />
away rate is 18 to 1 meaning for every one individual sheltered,<br />
18 calls are turned away for that bed.<br />
We have to decide as individuals and as a community, to take<br />
a stand against domestic violence and all forms of violence.<br />
Volunteer your time and donate as you are able to agencies<br />
that work with the most vulnerable in our society. You have the<br />
power to play a vital role in EDVP’s life saving services, change<br />
lives and give hope. Together we can face the challenge.<br />
SAY we serve those communities but we must understand their<br />
unique needs and provide the individual support they need.<br />
Our transitional shelter My Friend’s Place plays a unique role<br />
in our community as well. We provide long term safety and<br />
support for victims of domestic violence who are also fighting<br />
drug or alcohol addiction. Victims often numb themselves<br />
with drugs or alcohol and have very few options to find help.<br />
Through our transitional shelter program we also continue to<br />
grow our permanent housing program. We have been diligent<br />
in our search for funds to support our permanent housing<br />
program and work on a collaborative partnership with three<br />
eastside agencies. The <strong>Eastside</strong> Landlord Liaison <strong>Program</strong> has<br />
given us a step up with permanent housing providers who are<br />
anxious to help those in need searching for a new start.<br />
We also face the challenge of decreased funding in 2010. As<br />
our requests for services have increased our resources have<br />
decreased. Decreased funding for domestic violence agencies<br />
is not just a county problem - it is a national crisis. <strong>Domestic</strong><br />
violence services are not a luxury – they are a moral obligation<br />
of our communities to help those in need – to protect, defend<br />
and ultimately save lives. Let your voice be heard. Please join<br />
us and say “I will work with determination and fortitude to<br />
end domestic violence in our community.”<br />

The Power of Hope<br />
<strong>Eastside</strong> <strong>Domestic</strong> <strong>Violence</strong> <strong>Program</strong> offers life-saving<br />
programs and services and hope to families facing domestic<br />
violence. In 2008 we had 98 children living with their mothers<br />
at our shelter My Sister’s Home (MSH). What do MSH kids<br />
have in common? They all have been born into families dealing<br />
with domestic violence and they are homeless. A parent that is<br />
supposed to love them – has either physically, physiologically<br />
or sexually abused them. They have been deeply harmed by<br />
witnessing abuse.<br />
My Sister’s Home is the <strong>Eastside</strong>’s first emergency shelter for<br />
families in lethal situations facing extreme and potentially<br />
fatal violence. Opened in 1992, EDVP is able to provide a<br />
full continuum of prevention and crisis intervention services.<br />
Several years ago MSH became a unique and innovative<br />
“scattered-site” housing model in a confidential apartment<br />
complex. This unique emergency shelter model makes MSH<br />
exclusively suited to accommodate survivors who may be<br />
challenging for other shelters to house: large families; families<br />
with specific culinary, religious or cultural practices; men and<br />
the GLBT community. These groups have historically been<br />
difficult to house in the communal living shelter model.<br />
In April 2009, MSH was fortunate to be given the opportunity<br />
to move the program to a new apartment complex which offers<br />
a more accommodating facility, larger, updated units as well as<br />
additional advantages and resident amenities that our former<br />
location did not offer - and all with no additional cost! The<br />
property owner is donating a portion of the cost of each unit<br />
in order to make these apartments available to EDVP.<br />
This apartment complex empowers a survivor of abuse to<br />
become self sufficient and independent. Residents, volunteers,<br />

interpreters and visiting funders, have remarked on how<br />
welcoming and comfortable the apartments feel. One mother<br />
and her young daughter were living in their car for two weeks<br />
before space became available. In happy anticipation the little<br />
girl had made a card for the<br />
shelter staff that said, “Thank<br />
you for my new home.” She<br />
proudly presented it to staff as<br />
she walked through the door.<br />
My Sister’s Home is very<br />
excited to have been<br />
chosen by Bright Horizons<br />
Foundation to receive a<br />
“Bright Space.” This children’s<br />
room is designed and set<br />
up by volunteer childcare center directors who donate their<br />
time to the project, furnish the room with toys, games and<br />
furnishings that have been funded by a Bright Horizons<br />
fundraising drive. The room is used for children’s support<br />
groups and promotes positive, social peer interaction and<br />
education.<br />
Families in shelter have been exposed to violence and trauma,<br />
and their lives have been uprooted and filled with uncertainly.<br />
Often something as simple as participating in normal family<br />
activities can go a long way toward restoring a sense of stability<br />
to their daily lives while giving hope for the future. The simple<br />
pleasure of reading quietly to their child, watching a movie to<br />
the end or cooking a favorite meal can rejuvenate and refresh<br />
the soul. EDVP’s job is to help families heal and end the cycle<br />
of domestic violence today and in future generations.
