Choos<strong>in</strong>g Childcare <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>ACT</strong><br />

Choos<strong>in</strong>g childcare<br />

<strong>to</strong> meet your needs<br />

Choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> right childcare<br />

service is an important decision.<br />

When decid<strong>in</strong>g what childcare<br />

option will best meet <strong>the</strong> needs<br />

of you and your child, you should<br />

consider:<br />

■■ The type of care you<br />

require — full-time or<br />

part-time, centre based care,<br />

occasional care, family day<br />

care, or before and after<br />

school care for school-aged<br />

children.<br />

■■ The location of <strong>the</strong><br />

childcare service — is<br />

it close <strong>to</strong> your home,<br />

work or place of study?<br />

■■ The size of <strong>the</strong> childcare<br />

service — would you prefer<br />

a small or large service?<br />

■■ The childcare environment —<br />

what is important for you<br />

and your child when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are <strong>in</strong> care?<br />

■■ When you anticipate you<br />

will require care — it is<br />

important <strong>to</strong> start look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

well <strong>in</strong> advance.<br />

Contact and visit <strong>the</strong> service or<br />

family day care scheme<br />

It is suggested you contact a service <strong>to</strong> arrange a visit <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

centre. This will enable you <strong>to</strong> meet <strong>the</strong> staff, observe <strong>the</strong><br />

children and <strong>the</strong> program, ask questions and check for quality.<br />

Some questions you may want <strong>to</strong> ask are:<br />

■■ What is <strong>the</strong> philosophy or approach of <strong>the</strong> service?<br />

■■ What is <strong>the</strong> educational program provided?<br />

■■ What does <strong>the</strong> service provide, for example, nappies,<br />

lunches, etc?<br />

■■ What is <strong>the</strong> cost?<br />

■■ Is <strong>the</strong> service not-for-proft or private?<br />

■■ What is <strong>the</strong> size of <strong>the</strong> service?<br />

■■ Is <strong>the</strong> service likely <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> offer a place when needed?<br />

■■ Can <strong>the</strong> service provide <strong>in</strong>formation on apply<strong>in</strong>g for Child<br />

Care Beneft?<br />

Some th<strong>in</strong>gs you may look for are:<br />

■■ Are <strong>the</strong> children happy and engaged <strong>in</strong> activities?<br />

■■ Do children have time <strong>to</strong> explore and discover new activities?<br />

■■ Do staff communicate well with each o<strong>the</strong>r?<br />

■■ Are staff actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> children’s play and activities<br />

and responsive <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir needs?<br />

■■ Are <strong>the</strong> relationships between staff and children car<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

warm and consistent?<br />

■■ How does <strong>the</strong> program meet <strong>the</strong> different <strong>in</strong>terests and<br />

needs of children?<br />

Book<strong>in</strong>g childcare and wait<strong>in</strong>g lists<br />

Each childcare service <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>ACT</strong> has its own<br />

system for tak<strong>in</strong>g enrolments and allocat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

places when a vacancy becomes available.<br />

Wait<strong>in</strong>g lists are commonly used by services <strong>to</strong><br />

register <strong>the</strong> details of families seek<strong>in</strong>g places.<br />

Some services do not have a wait<strong>in</strong>g list.<br />

When book<strong>in</strong>g childcare or plac<strong>in</strong>g your name<br />

on a wait<strong>in</strong>g list, it is important <strong>to</strong> fnd out from<br />

<strong>the</strong> service what you need <strong>to</strong> do <strong>to</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />

your book<strong>in</strong>g as policies and procedures vary<br />

across services.<br />

The service may require you <strong>to</strong>:<br />

■■ visit <strong>the</strong> service and complete an application<br />

form<br />

■■ meet with <strong>the</strong> family day care coord<strong>in</strong>a<strong>to</strong>r<br />

■■ pay a fee <strong>to</strong> be on <strong>the</strong>ir wait<strong>in</strong>g list<br />

■■ attend an <strong>in</strong>terview with <strong>the</strong> service manager<br />

■■ ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> regular contact by phone or <strong>in</strong>person.<br />

Families often put <strong>the</strong>mselves on wait<strong>in</strong>g lists<br />

at many different services <strong>to</strong> maximise <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

chances of gett<strong>in</strong>g a place prior <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir return<br />

<strong>to</strong> work. This makes it diffcult for services <strong>to</strong><br />

establish accurately when <strong>the</strong>y can offer places.<br />

Plac<strong>in</strong>g your name on a wait<strong>in</strong>g list doesn’t guarantee you a place when it is required.<br />

Allocat<strong>in</strong>g places<br />

It is not simply a process of allocat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> next<br />

person on <strong>the</strong> wait<strong>in</strong>g list when a vacancy arises.<br />

There are many reasons why a service cannot have<br />

a ‘frst <strong>in</strong>, frst served’ policy for fll<strong>in</strong>g a vacancy.<br />

The service needs <strong>to</strong> consider <strong>the</strong> child’s age along<br />

with <strong>the</strong> family’s preference for days and times and<br />

match <strong>the</strong>se aga<strong>in</strong>st actual vacancies.<br />

Ask <strong>the</strong> service what <strong>the</strong>ir policy is for allocat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

places. For example, is it a workplace childcare<br />

service that gives priority <strong>to</strong> employees of <strong>the</strong><br />

sponsor<strong>in</strong>g agency, or do <strong>the</strong>y give priority <strong>to</strong><br />

families where <strong>the</strong>re is a sibl<strong>in</strong>g already <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir care?<br />

The service is also required <strong>to</strong> frst place children<br />

who meet <strong>the</strong> Australian <strong>Gov</strong>ernment’s Priority<br />

of Access <strong>Guide</strong>l<strong>in</strong>es. For more <strong>in</strong>formation visit:<br />
