Rollingwood completes purchase of wastewater
system from Lower Colorado River Authority
The City of
Rollingwood
completed the
purchase of a
wastewater system
Aug. 1 that
includes seven
lift stations and
gathering lines
from the Lower
Colorado River
Authority.
The purchase
was made possible by the
voter-approved $12.57 million
bond referendum passed in
May to finance the wastewater
system. The bond will mature
over 33 years with an interest
rate of 3.43 percent.
“This was a sound financial
decision that significantly
reduces our costs and places
the ownership and control of
the wastewater system in our
hands where we, as a community,
can control our own
destiny,” Rollingwood Alderman
John Hinton said.
While the annual capital
cost of the system is expected
to be reduced by 13 percent
and the fixed maintenance
City Council defends Lakeway Civic Corporation in parks sale lawsuit
The City of Lakeway is coming to the
defense of the Lakeway Civic Corporation
in a lawsuit that Mayor Dave DeOme called
“outrageous.”
During a July 16 meeting, Lakeway City
Council authorized the city to contribute up
to $8,000 to the LCC’s legal defense. The LCC
and City of Lakeway have been sued by Lakeway
resident George Blume for the potential
sale of parts of Rebel and Sailfish parks.
The lawsuit aims to prevent the city from
and operations expenses
are expected to drop by
32 percent, property taxes
are expected to increase by 8
centers per $100 in valuation.
The rise in property taxes
is expected to be offset with
reductions in user charges.
AWR Services Inc., an
Austin-based company, was
selected by the city to handle
the operations of the system.
“I want to thank our former
mayor and council, and our
current council for their
leadership in negotiating and
closing this transaction,”
Rollingwood Mayor Barry
Bone said.
West Lake Hills bans the use of handheld signs
West Lake Hills City Council voted 3-0, with Councilman
David Moore abstaining, to pass an amendment to Chapter
32 of the city code banning the use of handheld signs in city
limits and in the West Lake Hills extraterritorial jurisdiction at
its July 26 meeting.
While the new amendment bans the use of handheld signs,
the city attorney will retain prosecutorial discretion.
“I’m not going to be prosecuting the Girl Scouts,” said Alan
Bojorquez, West Lake Hills City Attorney.
Travis County
Officials expect county
tax rate to rise
Travis County officials are
predicting that the county’s
tax rate may rise from
48.55 cents to 49.79 cents per
$100 of property valuation.
On July 24, the Travis
County Commissioners Court
received a revision to the third
of five revenue estimates it will
receive before passing its fiscal
year 2013 budget.
In a letter dated July 24,
County Auditor Susan Spataro
wrote that the county is
expecting to collect
$404.87 million in taxes.
That amount is
$17.72 million more than the
fiscal year 2012 forecast and
selling the parks in the future, City Manager
Steve Jones said.
Voters in the May special election rejected
the sale of Rebel Cove and Sailfish Cove.
The portions of Rebel Park and Sailfish
Park that were for sale are often submerged
by Lake Travis and are largely unused by the
greater community, Jones said.
City ordinance requires voter approval for
the sale of any parkland.
$7.5 million more than the
second revenue estimate for
fiscal year 2013.
“In response to the struggles
of the U.S. economy over
the last few years, we have
been very conservative in our
projections of the property tax
collection rate,” Spataro wrote.
The new revenue estimate
does not include recently
passed increases in the over-
65 and disabled property tax
exemption or the county’s
new historic property tax
exemption policy.
County officials expect to
get their fourth revenue estimate
prior to the last week in
August. The fifth estimate is
expected in mid-September.
